  2. So this has been something I've done before. Its a pool to see who can predict on what day the last front of the war is closed. The way this works is that you pick a day when the last alliances declare peace, that no one has taken yet. If you get the right day, you'll get your choice of 3 mill or 50 tech.   3. Its a tough choice for sure. I'd say my vote is going between TLR, GOONS, Umbrella, and ODN, but I haven't made up my mind yet. Some one convince me. Edit: Also I just used MK's list of treaty partners as a starting point. There could be an argument made for alliances that are not on the treaty list to be used, so if you have a good argument for some one not allied to MK, but still acting like their in MK's pocket, I'm willing to add them.

[size="7"] The Big Four Treaty Web [/size] [url="http://forums.cybernations.net/index.php?showtopic=102558"]The Myth Of Supergrievances[/url] thread seamed to lead into this question and also I'm [ooc]bored[/ooc] and so this thread is happening. How strong are the ties between SF, CnG, PB, and XX, and what are the future of the relationships between these blocs. When I look at the above web I created to show the treaties between the blocs, to me they look completely inseparable. But what do you all think? PS. My apologies if i missed a treaty, or an alliance. PPS. It appears there is at least two mistakes in the web. The International's treaties with RnR and FOK are both MDoAPs.

One question I have is this; When the Initiative, League, Q and other large blocs were formed from scratch, did they get leaked as quickly and as widespread as this bloc has been? I am a newer player so I wasn't around for such things. * This thread may be a result of boredom.
  8. [size="7"] [font="Impact"]The Policy Corner[/font] [/size] [size="5"]The Importance of Models[/size] No one in CN can possibly know every aspect of planet bob. There are too many players, too many alliances for us to know every detail that could help us predict events inside or outside an alliance. For this reason we have to conceptualize and generalize how the various actors in CN relate to one another. This many times must take the form of some kind of model. A model cannot take in to account every intricacy, but it helps us think of complex issues in terms that we can handle according to the limits of our knowledge, time, expertise and ability to analyze the circumstances we are trying to interpret. [size="5"]The Value Of A Treaty Partner[/size] Today I am going to attemptto model the military value that an alliance gives to its treaty partners. Now the first thing that many people take into account is Nation Strength. If you've spent much time in CN you've probably experienced a newer player suggest that your alliance treaty the #1 or #2 alliances according to their NS. While that's not a good way for alliances to go about treatying others, the nation strength of an alliance does increase in ability to help its treaty partners. This is of course assuming that NS = fighting ability, which we all know isn't always true, but this is a model, and not exact. The next biggest factor is the number of treaties said alliance has. The more treaties an alliance has, the less valuable it is to its allies. Why is this? Well lets look at an alliance of 1 million NS and with 10 treaty partners. A major war breaks out and all 10 treaty partners go to war. If this alliance defends just one of those alliances, each alliance has a on in ten chance of being defended by this first alliance. Therefore this alliance is worth 100K ns to each of its partners. (1,000,000NS/1 alliance * 1/10 = 100,000 NS per alliance) Now if this first alliance defends all its partners. The ten treaty partners will all get help that will average out to 100K NS per alliance. Now if the first alliance defends 5 alliances, they have have a one in two chance of being defended by 200K NS, and so 1/5 * 1,000,000NS/5 alliances = 100K NS per alliance. So for kicks and giggles lets rank the top forty alliances by their nation strength divided by their number of MDP and stronger treaties. I won't use PIAT and or ODP treaties because defense is not required in these treaties and so MDP is the simplest cut off. Again this is a model. So what would it look like if I ranked the top forty alliances by their NS per MDP+ treaties? Well here are the top forty, excluding independents, and FAN, for obvious reasons. Now there are a few weaknesses in this model. Here are a few I came up with. 1. As I noted earlier, NS can sometimes be very disconnected from military ability. For example Umbrella outperformed what their NS would leave you to believe they were capable of. They generated a great many offensive wars in the Bi-Polar war, and so really helped their allies out. NS is a very rough way to predict fighting ability, but for now its about the best we have. One day I would love to see better quantifiable way to measure the military preparedness of an alliance. 2. IF an alliance has its treaties all over the treaty web it can easily find itself in a position where it can't take a side and ignores all its treaties. ADI in the TPF war would be a good example of this. Their treaties were all over the place, and therefore they found themselves unable to participate and defend any of their treaty partners. 3. If two treaty partners have an exceptionally good relationship their treaty is more likely to be activated than others. The activation of the NpO STA treaty in the Karma war would be a good example of this.

[size="7"]MCXA Tournament Edition Gains Sanction[/size] By Jrkee MCXA TE team is proud to see that in Tournament edition round 11 we are among the top alliances. We are currently a sanctioned TE alliance. We have been around for a couple of TE rounds. We started out small, around 10 members, and now in this round we have almost 40 members and we are the 11th strongest alliance in TE. We have now seen members apply from outside MCXA standard edition to join our tournament edition alliance. We are looking forward to a strong round for MCXA TE and to keep on our path of growing until we are tops in Planet Steve. MCXA especially encourages its newer members to join tournament edition so they can introduce themselves to the mechanics of war in Cyber Nations. [size="7"]Beer Review: Miller High Life[/size] by Bryn 1030 Cost - At the local liquor store you can pick up a 24 case for around 17 dollars. Prices are cheap but so is the beer. Appearance - Typical adjunct lager golden color. The can design (although having nothing to do with the beer itself) looks dated and unattractive. Smell - Decently strong smell for it's category upon cracking the can open. Too bad it's of fillers, as well as the metallic tinge from the can. Taste - First sip exemplifies what smells come from, although it still isn't a *good* flavor. Watery corn comes to mind. For best taste serve COLD, any warmer then 40F and its drinkablity drops significantly. Mouthfeel - Very carbonated. Too much so for my taste, but then what would The Champagne of Beers be without a little inspiration from the bubbly. Drinkablity - It's definitly drinkable, but it isn't refreshing or drinkable enough to drink through a hot August day if that's what your looking for. Overall, not something I would buy or recommend, unless I am looking for a cheap night of drinking. However, at the same time I can't say much that's bad about it for it's category, and that's why I hate it. It's just so boring and down-the-middle. There are no exciting flavors here. Nothing differentiates it from any other beer. No character. Serving type: 24 case 12oz cans, Rating 4/10 [size="7"]Alliance and Player of April[/size] By SuperCoolYellow Player of the Month Do you think it would be fun to negotiate peace between two major coalitions at war? Trust me it isn't. I've heard from many people that it takes a tooooon of time and is a thankless job. It can be stressful and can make it hard to keep your cool. For the tifdit coalition most of its members handled their own peace agreements individually. CnG and friends however, were lead by one SirWilliam, who spend weeks working on the final product of the Easter Peace agreement. I have talked to some of the people who negotiated for Tifdit Alliances, and they tellme that SirWilliam handled himself well through out. There was a bump at the end with Gramlins, and I'm thankful that SirWilliam and the rest of CnG and Co. didn't feel the need to keep the war going on behalf of their more militant friends. Congratulations to SirWilliam on being the player of the month. Alliance of the Month In discussions about who should get alliance of the month, the first suggestion was a snide one about Gramlins. I also considered Viridian Entente for treatying Fok and Umbrella, which is like picking up your favorite chainsaw, and a batch of grenades in a zombie shooter. However it became clear that one alliance clearly stood out, first for the best April Fools prank, and then Earning Sanction. Few alliances have impacted CN as much as the Mushroom Kingdom, and they surely deserve sanction. Congratulations to the Mushroom Kingdom, on sanction, forums pips, and being the alliance of the month. *MK members pls be advised that posting just a :smug: smiley is considered a spam post, please make sure you have three words in any replies.
  11. [size="7"]The Policy Corner[/size] Freddie Mercury queried me, quite some time ago, asking if the next policy corner could be about alliances that purge inactive members. I decided to go with the theme but expand it to what an alliance can do to increase activity. Activity is one of the most important, and many times elusive, aspects of an alliance, and unless you are Paradoxian, or smug you are likely trying to increase the activity of your alliance. I would argue that activity is the catalyst of stats because alliance growth is the sum of the collective energy an alliance puts forward to better itself. There are other variables such as skill in leadership,experience, reputation, but in my mind all of these are less influential as the activity of an alliance, and activity can also lead to increases in many of these other areas. Gauging alliance activity can also be a tricky thing, by my count there are three areas of activity. First there is forum activity, and it is by far the least public forms activity, but also the most useful in getting things done. Most of the important functions of the alliance happen in the forums, from creating trading circles, to new member education. Next is IRC activity, while not as much business is done here for most alliances it is important for interacting with other alliances, and making smaller, or more time sensitive decisions. The least important form of activity is OWF activity, and ironically it is by far the most public form activity. For example to the newer and uninformed player one might think that NSO is more active than FARK. [color="#0000FF"]A short plug for MCXA:[/color] Many people think MCXA is inactive which is untrue, our forum activity is probably above average and our IRC activity is right on par, what causes people to think we are inactive is that we have only two-three members who regularly post on the OWF. Also there are two ways to define average activity. The most popular way to gauge activity is the average activity of alliance members. The other way is to judge the over all activity of an alliance. Take for example the New Polar Order and the Corporation, if we judge the alliance based on average activity the Corporation is likely to be more active. If we judge based on total activity NpO is easily more active. I tend to judge alliance on overall activity because on any given day NpO is able to do more than the Corporation. The first thing that an alliance can do to promote activity is in its admissions policies. Here are some options that an alliance can have. 1. Only admit experienced players. This is likely to be a sure fire way to make sure every member of the alliance is active, and it has worked for alliances like Paradoxia and *gasp* Gramlins. My problem with this is that only a very few number of alliances can pull this off. When I see a new alliance try to do this, or a less well respected one I assume that they will not be able to grow, and will have a short lived stay on planet Bob. 2. In forum interviews Many alliances do this in some form. TOP, MK, and most of all NPO does this. When you recruit a new nation a great many of players will just leave the game the next day and never think of it again. If a player has to go through a day or three of interviewing, they will have made it over that initial hump. Also alliances can use the interview to create friendships, and introduce applicants to the culture of the alliance. The question that NPO uses in its interviews is a good example of this. Overall I think this is such a good idea every alliance should be doing it. I've been pushing for it at MCXA, and it has been implemented at a level, but I would love to see it taken farther. 3. IRC interviews IRC activity should be a goal for every alliance. Some alliances achieve almost perfect IRC activity through requiring applicants to get on IRC before they are accepted. This can be very effective and makes it a lot easier to get new members to be active. Many new players find IRC daunting and overwhelming and this can give them the push they need to try it. The drawbacks are that many new members can applicants can be chased away by this. Also I have encountered many alliance members who have done a great deal of service for their alliance without every using IRC. After Admissions, alliances will many times have to tackle the hard task of getting existing members to be more active. Here are the things I've seen done to try to achieve this. 4. In game mass PMs. The idea behind this is that if you send PMs to your members linking them to important things going on in the alliance forums, that they will get on and read the posts. I used to swear by these when I was in charge of the Big Top Order. What I have now decided is that alliance members actually use this as an excuse not to read the forums. If anything important happens they will receive PMs about it and no longer feel the need to read the forums every day. 5. Activity Rewards Some alliances have tried to pay members to be active. Most frequently by paying people by the post. This has also been done by paying people who serve as things like recruiters, or to the smaller nations who attack ghosts. Largely I think this can use up a lot of aid slots to have an impact, but I do think there is a way to do this. If an alliance offers aid to new members to achieve certain activity goals they can hopefully create a pattern of activity that will last them after they receive their aide. MCXA has done this both and it has gone a long way to increase activity and recruiting. 6. Purging Inactive Members I've heard a lot of great things about this recently. Ragnarok has embraced it quite publicly recently. For those alliances that view activity by its average and not its collective sum, they would be more likely to pick this route. Londo Mollari has told me that it can still increase the sum activity as well. Apparently Athens has tried purging and when members have been told they will be kicked out, they get back to being active and taking part in the alliance. I think this policy is much harder for democratic alliances where an elected government may find its self out of office if they remove inactive people from the alliance. The completely inactive won't vote regardless, but those who are sometimes inactive will have a large problem with their government. I see a few problems with purging. First many players are active and inactive based on the time they have and what is going on in RL. the player who is inactive today may tomorrow be active. Also it no secret that many players might not be around until war comes, and then they come when they are needed and still contribute to the alliance. Also if a larger member is not active enough to buy tech, they can many times be used to give money to alliance aid programs because they aren't using their aid slots for anything else. At MCXA this has helped us achieve quite large aid funds even post war, as some members who aren't quite that active given generously when asked. After these things an alliance can do several things to engage their members. Here are a few that I've seen. 7. Interesting posts For members to get on the forums there has to be stuff that they can read an enjoy. This can take many forms. Every alliance does spam games, but to be honest I'm not a fan because they seem rather pointless. At MCXA we love to gamble, we gamble on what will be the peak radiation level during the war, and even when certain members will have their baby. When its in game tech we're gambling with I see no moral problems with it. Other fun things that have can be done are youtube video threads, pictures threads, you mom joke threads, the list goes on an on. 8. IRC trivia For many smaller alliances a member can get on IRC and find nothing to do, having IRC trivia can help this pretty decently and generate discussions, especially in the public channels. The only trick is getting bot to do this. 9. Opening up the private channel Another thing a new and smaller alliance can do is open up their private channel to a few friends outside the alliance. This helps the smaller alliance create new friends and make sure there is always somone to talk to on IRC, and help out new members who use IRC for the first time. For larger alliances this isn't needed and can mess with opsec. 10. Giving out positions If encouraging members to take up positions is done with the right person it can be the push they need to become truly involved. Getting that newer member to be a diplomat may mean that one day they will be the future MOFA of your alliance. Once a member has a role they should feel obligated to be faithful in their duties. However if you push the wrong member who isn't already active, they can just abandon their duties and important functions can remain undone. For this reason I have a hard time trusting important roles to less active members. 11. Transparency If the government of an alliance makes all the decisions behind closed doors, the membership will feel disjointed from alliance club. By involving members in alliance decisions the government can engage them, give members something to talk about, and help members learn how the alliance runs to train some to be future leaders in the alliance [color="#FF0000"]My questions for you are... What has been your experience with these methods and their success and drawbacks? What else have you seen tried to encourage activity? What on this list does your alliance currently do? [/color]
  12. I noticed all the war time World Affairs posts were slowing down, so I thought it was time to bring back the policy corner. Today's topic is more a leadership question, then just downright policy. Every alliance has loose cannons. They're usually the most active player, and many times have tons of knowledge about the game. Tons of passion also can mean tons of potential, but they're really divisive. My question to all of you, how are loose cannons are best dealt with, within an alliance? I know at MCXA we have been a bit infamous for having one of the greatest loose cannons ever, Francesca. Her and some other people like herself are part of the reason for the TSO split. Needless to say how an alliance and its leaders deal with loose cannons is very important thing. Personally I don't have all the answers, but I do have a few rules I follow. [ooc] As a Christian of the few values I bring to the game from my faith is how to deal with conflict. If I have a personal problem with someone I try to go to them personally, and not bring that problem out into the public, or in CN, the forums. [/ooc] I find this avoids stirring the pot or personally offending anyone. I also think allowing freedom of speech and respecting people opinions no matter how hard you disagree with them helps as well. What are some success stories that you know about of some one who had trouble getting along with other people, but eventually turn out to be of great value to their alliance. There are two alliances I am very interested in. Athens and NSO both seem to be alliances that have, and attract a lot of the loose cannons types.   13. Explanation It has been bothering me for some weeks about how the CoC was run. I have also been at both times bored and burnt out with CN and this is my way of doing something about that. I could just PM my complaints to the involved players, and save face, but that wouldn't be as much fun. This is formatted like Martin Luther's Ninety-Fife Theses. This does not include examples/evidence because no one would like me to mention them by saying "so and so is angry about this." If you wish to provide examples that confirm or are to the contrary of these points that is your own prerogative. This is also not a rant about not being at the table myself. I know my place as a leader of small, but quickly growing, alliance , and my place was no where near the planning channels. The Theses 1. In the planning of CoC many major alliances were shut out of the planning process 2. The planning of CoC was instead done by a only a few players who did not adaqeutly involve or inform other alliances. 3. If CoC was going to succeed in a large scale war, it would have had to have much better communication with its member alliances. 4. Many member alliances in CoC were not informed of who was leading CoC days after the TPF war began. 5. Many member alliances of CoC were not given a chance to give feedback on CoC peace mode strategy. 6. The peace mode strategy while on paper made sense was naive, and failed in execution, in that it expected alliances to be able to get all their member nations under 85K NS into peace mode within a day. 7. The peace mode strategy was poorly executed in that it was not even used the day that nations were sent into peace mode, and it was easily spotted within hours of the transition. 8. the leadership of CoC failed coordinate and share information with member alliances that prevented them from defending TPF until 6 days after the war began. 9. A nation ruler who has real life obligations that would prevent a large coalition from defending its allies for 6 days, should have the humility to not take leadership of a large coalition. 10. The mistakes of CoC were the result of the character, judgement, or policies or any other facet of its members alliances, their members, or their leadership but instead were the mistakes of those few involved in the planning for CoC. 11. Many members of the CoC share my same frustrations. In Conclusion If you were a member of a CoC alliance and are frustrated with some of the decisions that were made,that frustration should not be with your alliance but the highest leaders of CoC. If you were outside of CoC and thought some of the decisions that were made were foolish please know that these decisions were made by only a select few people. If you were one of the top leaders in CoC please learn from your mistakes and don't repeat them. Especially if you ever find yourself leading a coalition that BTO is a member of.
