I am not the oldest player in this game, dammit!
But I am one of them. I do not remember WWII, but I got a lot of "first hand" reports on it from my father, Uncles, and their friends. My father landed on Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944. He told me that there was one moment in that war that affected him more than any other: when his troop ship came sailing into New York Harbor in 1946, and he was finally "home". Those who fought and survived that war didn't talk about it much, even among themselves. Over time, however, my Dad would tell short snippets of his experiences in Europe during those terrible days. Those days would haunt him until his death in 1998. I was privileged to travel to Normandy with my Dad as a part of the 50th reunion of the Normandy invasion. For two weeks, we traveled the roads he traveled, went through the hedgerows he fought through, and shared time in those countries he had experienced in days long ago.
It was an amazing historical opportunity for us both. He stopped in the middle of a street in France, looked down, and I saw tears rolling down his face. This would happen time and time again, as he remembered scenes he could not describe, friends he saw dying...again, and he even showed me the very spot where he got a jeep shot out from under him, killing his driver and two other soldiers. That would get him his third Purple Heart.
We visited farm houses, villages, and a few cities in France, Germany, The Netherlands, and England. It was truly a "once in a lifetime" event for me. It was his second time. What I remember about my experience pales in comparison to what he remembered those days. But, for me, the memories I have are among the most terrifying of my entire life. My Dad, the immovable force, shaking like a Quaking Aspen, crying uncontrollably, snot running down his nose as he fought to release, then contain. Himself. The Senator, reduced to complete incomprehensibility as he struggled, trying to understand still, and again. Looking at ghosts he would simply name with rank and serial number, inevitably looking down at some spot on the ground only he could see. In Paris, my Dad said:
"The first time I walked these streets, strangers kissed my boots. Now, they spit on them. What happened?"
When we flew into New York, the pilot did something very special for those veterans on that plane. He circled the Statue of Liberty. Tears rolling, my Dad uttered something I did not understand. I asked him what he had said:
"You can put your lamp down, honey. I'm home." He said that was the statement he made when he had seen the Lady Liberty the first time, in 1946. Then, he looked at me and said:
"Never hate, Son. Never hate a person, a thing, an idea, a nation...just never hate. Will you promise me that?"
    "Yes, Sir. I promise."
"No matter what life deals to you, no matter the circumstance, deal with it in such a way that you increase the positives, and reduce the negatives. Then, your life will matter. There are many who never got that chance."
My Dad and I never got along much, or very well. I have said that, in my life, my Dad told me three things that ever made sense.
I've just told you two of them.
This is a game. Like Monopoly (where I've seen some pretty embarrassing moments of anger, as well, btw!), or Chess, or Candy Land. It's a game. It's not real. Life does not hinge on the outcome.
But your personal construction might well be affected by how you play this game. Remember that the person behind the pixels is not your enemy; they are fictional characters in a game. Don't become too infatuated, or dependent upon them to qualify the worth of your life, or your moment. This game has given me friendships that have lasted longer than real life friendships, and I will honestly tell you that I do cherish them. Some may not particularly care for the characters I have played, or may yet play in this game. But, it is a game.
Keep it IN the game. Using the IC game to even begin to consider OOC confrontations is loving the character, and the game entirely too much. Yet, with many games, and especially those games that are created for the purpose of creating fictional characters, we can tend to throw ourselves into them with such gusto as to go too far for ourselves, for our "Alliance", or for the game. Children play this game. (I can call most of you children, as I am most likely older than your parents, and could fit well into a conversation with your grandparents. So shut up, and give the old man some respect!)
Increase the positives, and reduce the negatives. I was somewhat stunned to hear those words come out of President Bill Clinton's mouth during his
. (If you haven't seen this speech, you really and surely should. I think it's one of his best, and for me, that would put this speech at the top of a pretty long list.) It's generally known as "The Funny Hats" Speech. These are life-changing words. One of the attractions of this game is that our characters can be as good, or as bad as we wish to make them. There are some really great examples of each, and many in between. Likewise, the same could be said of Alliances, or even Blocs. For some, if they couldn't be the ultimate "heel" in this game, they would have more difficulty outside the game. CN is aggression therapy, rage identity, etc. for these players. It's a lot cheaper than coming to someone like me for professional counseling.
There are those players in this game, too, who seek in this world to make their existence through their characters better than the realities life offers them. Here, they are whole, well, and strong. They can be the sex they choose, the age and power they choose. Failure is something the person behind the character may know intimately, but success is elusive. Here, characters get to help define what success is in ways that they may not be able to define outside the game. We can shape it, frame it, and create success as we wish.
I would truly be sad to know that there was a character in this game who hated me, or my character. Transference, it's called. Transference works in both directions, too. We can bring our anger, hurt, and disappointments from RL into our character's performance. The friendships between characters can grow, and become life-strong. They can also be destroyed in an instant. Here, some characters and alliances thrive on the hatred of others. That's how they measure success in the game, after all. Pain felt by a bombing run during battle can actually impact the person behind the character whose infra is being reduced to rubble. Adrenalin kicks in on both parts, and strange things happen.
Behind every character is a person. It is completely irrational to believe that if you think you know a particular character (yours or another) well, you somehow know the person behind the character--or the alliance. The power of an alliance in this game is pretty clearly understood, and I will not address that here. For me, however, the true power behind an alliance is the community which is built around, from, and beyond the log-in to the forums. There is, however, one inviolable law of CN which we must all agree upon. Failure to recognize, and absolutely commit to the keeping of this law creates unnecessary and very real problems, not for the characters, but for the person behind them.
I have known people who have played this game, who have found themselves to become the the target of real life stalking, ostracism, and physical violence. I have known people who, in-game, have bragged about being the perpetrators of such action. Because someone "accidentally", or with the belief in the faith of a friendship within an Alliance, "personally" reveals some fact or reality about their personal, non-character life DOES NOT automatically give you the right to use it against them, or their character. Period. New players sometimes innocently reveal facts of themselves through their characters. Some folks feel this is appropriate intel to use against them, either IC or OOC. It may be their age, their sex, their sexual identity, their political philosophy, their digits...something. You may not like the character, or respect them. Fine. You do not have the right to presume that the character in the game is in any way relevant to the OOC, RL person pressing their characters' buttons.
I don't like some Alliances in this game. I don't like their themes, their structures, their "history", the way they play the game, or the sphere they call home. There are players in this game that take things well beyond any reasonable limit, in my view. But, you see, that is just MY view. The character nor the Alliance is somehow required to conform to my sense of fair play, or rationality in order to be a player in this game. I can disagree with them to the point that I direct my Alliance to roll them, and roll them, and roll them. Some characters, and even some alliances can create their own histories in such a way, and to such a degree that they will become a character with whom I will probably never become close to, or friends with. They may be alliances that I would never join. Their choice. My choice. IC, I can make all those choices I want. I can take all the actions for, or against as I am capable and equipped.
President Clinton said that our world is unequal, unstable, and unsustainable. I do truly wonder if he has a nation here! But, what if he did? Or President Bush, for that matter? Or General Powell? Could you identify them? Would you automatically ascribe their characters in RL to the fictional character they manipulate here? I would bet not. And, why would it be so surprising if they did have a nation? After all, look at me. Look at you. We are real, and very much alive people who come together to pay an online browser game, join community, and somehow make it to the next necessary thing. That's what we are. That's what we do. That may not be why all of us show up here, but it is why we stay here, or come back again, and again.
Keep IC where it belongs. Protect, preserve and radically defend OOC of every player you know, and every player you don't. That's the inviolable rule of CN. We've seen instances where that wall has been breached. Regardless of stated reason or rationality, violation of this one inviolable rule is ALWAYS wrong. You may, from your character's perspective, disagree with me on that. You may, personally, disagree with me on that. But let's look at it for just a moment from the viewpoint of someone I knew for most of my life, my Dad.
    "Never hate!"
"Be sure to increase the positives, and reduce the negatives."
These words did not come from someone without experience, or judgment, or reason. They came from a man who had seen, and lived in a world that was unequal, unstable, and unsustainable. To him, these words were, finally, the only way to make some kind of sense out of that world. He lived his life clinging to them, endorsing them, and growing from them into a person most folks thought and believed to be a pretty good man. It's really okay to bring just a little stability to Planet Bob. CN will not suffer if we, characters in a browser, bring a little equality to our game. Our characters, our alliances, and our world here will be, I think, more positive, and a lot less negative if we will just commit to creating a little sustainability to the game.
That's the way I have played the game. That's the way I have developed the character I play. Now, you know a little bit about why.
    I hope you will, too.

It has been an interesting time for us. Gone from the Cyberverse for very nearly a year, I decided to come back to the game. The major reason was to introduce a few friends to the planet, gently. Being a ruling Monarch can be a bit of a drag on one's social life. Rather than drag myself to the "social", I instead chose to drag the "social" to CN. What does that say about me?
And I have joined a new Alliance begun by some friends, originally protected by other friends (since "graduated"). Today, we discover that we are now Director of Public Affairs (FA) for The Biohazard Corporation. Timing, huh?
Rhemus is rebuilding, slowly. Let us hope we can prepare for a future conflagration effectively. I do appreciate you good folks presenting my return with a global conflict. It just seems good for what ails ya, don't it? LOL
    More as we develop.

Sometimes in life we learn that, in order to help those whom we care most about, we must make terribly difficult decisions. So long as the greater good is maintained, even difficult choices can be somewhat mitigated. We've had to visit that belief of late. It has been difficult. Yet, we know that, in the outcome, the greater good is being served.
Today, Merlinus attained the venerable age of 500 days. For most who would read this writing, that would only be a distant memory. That's fine. For us, however this is the first time our nation has achieved that landmark, and we are happy about it. Merlinus has survived two global wars. Her people are happy, productive, and rebuilding after a nearly 14k infra loss. This time around, the rebuilding holds less drama, and more determination. That's growth for her leader, as well.
CN life causes us to make choices as rulers of our nations. For all 500 of my days, we have proudly flown not only our own standard, but that of our alliance. Today, for reasons that are our own alone, that relationship ended.
The first obligation of any good ruler is to preserve and grow their nation. Our previous alliance not only taught me how to do that, but assisted me with this responsibility more than I could ever have dreamed. From Trade Circles to Tech circles, the people of Merlinus have never been in want. Building aid, and rebuilding aid have consistently flowed to us. Everything a ruler could possibly hope or dream to have, or achieve in the game, and in any good alliance has been fully, and selflessly realized.
But there is also a reality that we learn in levels, and sometimes we "plateau", creating a flat plane where growth should be. We hit it, and worked to pass through it. The plateau didn't end. Surely, many of you have felt this feeling. Stagnation works in a ruler's favor when the people are content and safe. It also brings the interest in Planet Bob down to about 10 minutes per day. That's difficult, after extended hours per day preparing for, prosecuting, or recovering from war.
I need to grow. I feel as if I have grown consistently, and well. There have been some trying times, and some wonderful times, as well. I've learned some important lessons about alliance life, and the communities that a strong alliance can create and maintain. Now, there are more lessons to be learned. There is an opportunity to give back to an amazing community of friends who, transcending the affiliation of an alliance, remain friends still. I have decided to find those next lessons. Hopefully, I can give a little back to the game that I have come to truly appreciate.
AzN, Day 1. Safe travels on your journey. May our paths cross often, and may we never regret it when they do.

Very early morning, atop the castle tower. HRH Merlinus walks slowly, pensively. His Royal Highness, Merlinus, the reigning sovereign to more than 410 million people (May His Light forever shine!) seems lost in thought. It is quiet out here, on the parapet. Crickets softly chirp their messages to one another. A clear and cloudless night, the moon is full. It's rays fall upon His Royal Highness as a spotlight falls upon the player on a stage. Our monarch is clearly troubled. As we know so very well, heavy is the head which wears the Crown. Our beloved King worries for us, his subjects. From my hiding place (I didn't intend to hide here; I came to speak with His Highness about urgent incoming communiques from the Alliance and the war front. I dare not disturb Him. Yet.) I can see his movements, hear his voice as he speaks quietly to himself. From my particular vantage point, it seems there is a shimmering trail on his cheek. Are those tears?
I listen for several moments, and understand. No matter how much I would prefer otherwise at this moment, I must do what my King has required of me in all things, at all times. I must take his wounded heart now, and cause it to shatter into untold numbers of pieces. The task so overwhelms me that I consider the number of parts into which the heart will fall. It will be my first task to make certain each piece is carefully and lovingly re-assembled. I love him as my King. I know him as a man. He is also my boss, and his expectations for those in his service never waiver, nor falter--no matter what. This man, Merlinus is also my closest and dearest friend. That is not unique unto me. His subjects universally revere him, but they also love him deeply. I wish I could comfort him now, as he obviously struggles within himself. I know that the news I bring to him is not merely discouraging news, but devastating news. Looking out over all he rules, Merlinus is in a severe state of agitated sadness. Rarely have I seen him this way. When was it last?
Oh, yes. It was the eve of the Great War of Heroes. I know what lies within these communiques I hold, because it is my responsibility to know. It is my duty to summarize each transmittal from the alliance and, for the past ten days now, battle reports from the current conflagration. All signs point to what will, in all likelihood, be the complete annihilation of the planet. The usually dependable gyroscope of reason has become disengaged, and the entire world is going mad! These are matters of the anguish of my Sovereign this early January morning. But, they are not the sum total of them. I must advance to him, and give him these communiques. They will, in all likelihood, kill him right where he now stands. In less than two short weeks, a fortnight, the entire globe upon which we sit has turned in upon itself. A joke? That is the joke in all of this. If had, at any time, ANY time, calmer heads had simply prevailed, we would be spared this conflagration. Yet, one man's folly, ONE MAN, has brought us to this brink of destruction. The good rulers among us have marshalled their troops and they are dying by the moment. Already, alliances cease to exist. We cannot escape this madness! Shall we launch a rocket to a new home? No.
But, as my good and mighty King has so often said, it is not so difficult to die. Everyone does it once. The difficult thing is understanding why you die. There is no reasonable explanation for such travesty to be laid at the feet of such honorable persons as this! But, even in our earlier conversations this very night, Merlinus said to me that lest a man stand for something, he will fall for anything. To his thinking, our only good course is to try to unite as many as we possibly can, even our adversaries. That one man, one crazed individual will forever hold the responsibility for this action which now threatens us all, is almost unthinkable. That one Kingdom declares unto itself its own utter destruction by a mad lunatic for a leader is almost unthinkable. Has the good of many come from this? Is there a principle, a reason which holds the last glimmer of hope for survival?
HRH Merlinus has said that he believes there is just one such hope. In all the history of our planet, men have lived, fought, and died honorably. Even in the very worst of our history, good shone through, as a beacon of hope to a troubled world. Never before in our history has it been the single, purposeful intent of one man, or one Kingdom, to completely annihilate the entire globe to its utter and final destruction, NEVER! Nor has it ever been true, until this present conflict, that one Kingdom would march into battle without an honorable reason; just for the sake of battle itself. NEVER has the planet community permitted one Kingdom to set out to achieve singular, individual power over every other Kingdom on the sphere. There are rules of common decency! My King believes that is still true, even in this darkest hour. He told me himself, today.
Oh, Admin! What will this do to him, his beliefs? His hopes, and with them the hopes of his Kingdom?
    "Oh, there you are!"
"Yes, Excellency. I bring news." He looks at me with his kindly face, then looks again.
"Oh, no! Please tell me it isn't so!"
I hand him the letters, and walk with him to the doorway. Holding the door open, my King, my friend begins to read. His hands begin to tremble. Tears rush from his eyes. I look at him, feeling his terrible pain. I watch as the news sinks into his breaking heart. He looks down, and away from me. I dare to put my hand upon his shoulder. When again I see his immortal face, there is anger and...something else. Determination?
He stands tall, he does not waver.
    "Order my jet! Immediately!"
    "Yes, Sire."
Robes sailing, HRH Merlinus speeds down the dim passageway. If he is going where I think he is going, it is only because he has found one true believer that he can parlay with, to perhaps turn the tide of this insanity.
"Well, come on! We have to go, NOW!"
    "Yes, Sire"

We are only days into the second year of our reign. The bunting has been removed, the streets cleaned until they sparkle. A happy sigh has been collectively felt by a grateful nation. All the while, our advances in technology have brought tentacles of darkness into our homes, places of work, and yes, even our government offices.

Over the past 48 hours, and especially over the past 24 hours, rumblings of discontent have found their genesis again on digiterra. We have not been remiss in our duties to our subjects, nor have we ignorantly refused to hear the beginning drumbeats--of war. What began as what has been reported as "an innocent joke" between two rulers now has thousands of nations preparing for, and actually engaging in combat. It is not merely the fact of aggression which brings us to the realization that our nation, our lives, and our world are at risk yet again, but rather the speed and intensity of that aggression. Merlinus is, for no reason other than our location on Planet Bob, at risk for the second time in a mere 12 months.

We have learned many harsh and unforgiving lessons in this past year, however. We know that we are a part, an important part of an alliance who seeks first peace, then neutrality, then unyielding faith and loyalty to her allies. Merlinus is proud and quite honored to have remained as a member, no matter how insignificant, of The Order of Light during the recent past days of sadness and turmoil. To her credit, TOOL has recovered quite nicely. We rule our nation; we do not speak for our alliance. It must be said, however that the two are inexorably linked with, and as it should be, fortune and famine. The people of Merlinus will never forget those valiant heroes who gave the ultimate sacrifice in our first conflict. Every citizen will answer the call of their Sovereign should it be again required of them.

We are distressed that such a sophomoric and juvenile act, with every possibility of collusion between two now-warring factions, could bring terror and another "long night of the soul" to a planet already in such deplorable decline. If it needs be so, our streets will run with blood yet again; this time, however, the blood of our martyrs will be much more strongly mixed with the crimson life energy of our adversaries. Yes, Merlinus has learned much. We have learned the hard lessons of war that have not lost their bitterness through this time of peace, a time we only wish to continue. We do not seek war, nor seek out opportunities to prosecute war. However, if it becomes necessary, we will not be the adversary some might well remember from our first experience. We respected the lessons we were forced to learn, and have learned them well. We will do all our alliance asks of us, and remain completely willing to defend ourselves maniacally--to the very last pixel. Our aggression against our adversaries will be ruthless, relentless, and without mercy. Not a dare, but a word of advice and caution is hereby given to anyone believing otherwise. Your aggression against this realm will cost you. Dearly. We have experienced the "long night of the soul" before. We learned, at a very high cost, many lessons from that experience.

The most important lesson learned during that time was that it was survivable. We survived that one. That doubt has been forever removed from our conscience. There is no longer a question as to if we will survive; we will. But, we will also do our very best to insure that you will not. Let there be Peace!
In Peace, we reign. In War, we RULE! As this is most likely the last Peacetime correspondence to our people for some time to come, we hereby initiate the pre-determined war preparation strategy, and call upon every citizen to prepare now, while time is given to us to do so.

This is NOT a drill. Shutter your doors and windows. Collect your crops, your weapons, your ammunition. Collect now your children, and remove yourselves to your safety environments. Check in with your Civil Wardens. Soldiers, prepare. May none of these things be necessary, but may they all be done immediately, with calm hearts and determined spirit. Wives, darn the socks of your family. Kiss your loved ones deeply, for they may have to linger for a long time.

Prepare! Prepare to be called. Prepare to fight! Prepare to Win! Merlinus will not live on in defeat, but in Victory! Admin speed, our children. Fare Well!

    Best Regards, etc.,
    M

We are pleased to announce the passing of our first year as Monarch, ruling Merlinus with a fair, but firm fist of Royal Monarchy. There have been many lessons learned, and many friends made. Sadly, some have passed on. The Great War took several thousands of our dedicated and loyal troopers, but their sacrifice (may they ever be blessed) has resulted in a larger, stronger and much more prosperous nation
For a year, we have been proud to be a member of the premiere White Sphere alliance, The Order of Light (TOOL). Having had the opportunity to learn, grow and share with the many friends of this alliance has been of the greatest personal and national value. Learning through experience, we have served in government, diplomacy, military leadership and editorially with the alliance news organ, The TOOL Times! as well. Academically, we have contributed significantly to the alliance academy and Advanced Studies Institute as staff/mentor. Sadly, we have had to say "Fare Well!" to many of our alliance mates, including the establishment of some two new Lords Captain Commander. GrahamKeatley and Salmia have stepped down from that exalted position, and have helped raise an entirely new and capable government under the adept leadership of TheDakotans. We have seen the return of several former alliance mates, come home to the fold in this year. Some, like our good friend and mentor Jarrko, have released themselves to the needs of The RL. We wish them God Speed, Admin Speed, and the sure and certain knowledge of friendships awaiting.
This first anniversary seems to have passed quietly enough within the realm, which is a blessing to us. That our people are going about the business of the nation, strengthening the economy while building our infrastructure and technological superiority via a very busy trade assembly, Merlinus is very slowly growing into a respectable nation. Our goal is not superiority, as such, but to achieve peacably our highest national potential. The population continues to slowly see growth, our landholdings are slowly improving, and taxes are still high as a result of the war, but more moeny is being kept in our population's purses than ever before. The people of Merlinus are content for the moment, while continuing the rebuilding effort the war requires of us. It is with some satisfaction that we report a moment being required to recall the "Great Sadness". Not by choice, but rather by necessity, we march forward into the new dawn.
We are looking to increase our efficiency in all national areas, while doing all we possibly can to increase our value to our beloved alliance. Our goals remain focused, and we will continue diplomatic relations with our trusted friends and allies. We do remain vigilant, for that is the cost of freedom. All in all, it has been a good year. We hope this coming year will be better. The struggle continues.
    Best Regards, etc.,
    M

OOC: At midnight last nite, I completed my 90th day as a member of a CN alliance. It is upon that milestone that I now wish to reflect.
Ninety days ago, I first applied the "TOOL Applicant" AA to my nation. I was one day old in CN. I responded, as so many players have, to a recruitment message-from Lord Nick (as it happens). The message stood out from the many for several reasons:
    ~ It was simple
~ It was genuine, from the standpoint of a member proud of his alliance
    ~ It was direct
    ~ It was short
It contained statements, not promises, about alliance life; something I had not yet experienced but knew was fundamental to my nation's survival in the game. I liked that. At one day old, survival was the only priority. I could learn how to play the game well. I liked that; I didn't come here to be a mediocre play as "one among the many". I have a strong competitive edge to my person. It has served me well in RL. I figured it may serve me well here.
Without really knowing what it meant, I masked my nation and followed the simple directions contained within the message. I found a Forum activity, and made my application to become a member of an alliance (whatever that means!). It was a first move on the road to inter-galactic superiority. I knew my intentions and ambitions, while no one else did. I had no way of knowing how to accomplish my goals, but I knew that I could align myself with players who had mastered the game, and learn. That was the goal. There was learning to be had. I worked hard, and even participated in a war during the process. At the same time, I began lurking on the alliance channels, observing the interactions among alliance members (and non-members, too) to see how this alliance life played out. I made a few friends that would, in time, come to figure prominently in my definition of the alliance, and the life it offers.
I (after some rather grueling training) was accepted into full alliance membership, and was accepted into a more advanced training program--one that continues to this very day, in fact. Where the initial training dealt with the basic mechanics of the game, this training is much more intense, and focuses on my nation, it's role in the alliance, and how both advance gameplay. It will continue for quite a while because of the goals and requirements for successful conclusion.
I have also found myself wrapped around a community, which has wrapped itself around me. I had heard, through the first training cycle that The Order of Light (TOOL) was one of the most respected Alliances in CN. I have come to understand the truth of that. That is not a universal truth, yet it remains true among those players and alliances of any substance on Planet Bob. My experience these past 90 days has proven that out by practical application. I can't tell you how fortunate I feel that my first decision in the game has turned out to be the very best one I have made.
I cannot recall at this moment which opportunity presented itself first to me, but I have become rather involved with alliance life, alliance activity, and alliance government. I have been trained as a FA Diplomat, Mentor and Academy staff member, military officer, and have even accepted responsibility as Editor of the Alliance Newsletter (it matches my RL activities). Yet, I am still learning every day. I have seen many new members follow my footsteps. It is interesting to know that they are experiencing just what I have experienced, but in their own unique way. The faith that led others to mentor me had led me to mentor others. The community continues and grows. I have seen members leave the Alliance. It has never once been an easy experience for them, and certainly not for me. I know there is an entire world on the Planet with opportunities galore for every single player. Sometimes, it is in the members' best interest to seek out other experiences.
If one thing has spoken to me most clearly, it is the number of those members who had left who have attempted to return to the alliance. Almost without exception, those who left seeking greener pastures have chosen to return to TOOL. Have they not found what they sought? Was it not as they believed it could be? Or, was the place they left really the best option in the first place? I can only go by what they themselves say. They are mostly apologetic for even believing there WAS a better place to participate in the game. That's not what I say. This has had a dramatic effect upon me as an alliance member. TOOL experienced a crushing defeat in a war of no consequence purely because they refused to ignore the pleas of their Treaty partners and other alliance friends. Yet, today, the strength and power of TOOL is unquestioned. Reps, viciously placed have been paid. New protectorates are in place. Membership is returning to pre-war levels, and will significantly surpass those numbers. Government, and governance is secure, strong, and community-driven.
This does not indicate the "return" of TOOL. TOOL didn't go anywhere. TOOL continues, under it's completely capable leadership, to grow through adversity as never before. New members are flooding the doors. Government is, in accordance with a well-developed plan, expanding the possibilities and potential for all the alliance members. Even through this latest conflict, the original designs of the alliance for growth continue. In the days, weeks, and months ahead, the planned implementations for virtually every segment of alliance life will be done.
As TOOL grows, so I grow. I could not be more pleased or grateful. I look forward to many happy moments with the alliance, and most especially it's community of long-time and brand new members. I believe I will be (and so will you) stunned with the continuing development of this superb alliance. I feel a sense of ownership that makes me humble, and very proud. TOOL has given so much more than it has required of me. Yes, I have earned it, but you must understand that it is not the obligation of the alliance to grant me, or any member, anything. That this alliance has recognized my membership in such measure is only a testimony to the community itself.
90 Days ago, I made a choice. On day 91, I can tell you it was the very best choice I could possibly have made. I'm really happy about that. I know, from my own personal experience, that what you get from this particular community is proportional to what you put into it. I hope you can say that about your alliance, and your community. If you do not yet have an alliance home, I most strongly recommend TOOL to you. If you have an alliance home, I sincerely hope you are as satisfied there as I am here. Every alliance, and every sphere operates differently. For me, the democratic free enterprise of TOOL is a perfect fit. I hope you have the opportunity to participate in your community as I do in mine. Learn, share, and grow is sometimes much more than just words. Living it out is a real thrill for me.
I hope that I will be able to share such reports with you for a very long time to come. I am proud to be a TOOLie. I hope now you know just a little bit better, why.
    Forever for the Light!!

Our beloved people of Merlinus continue to remove themselves from, and re-prove themselves through the recent War of the Reset. The funeral pyres have burned out, and the rubble mostly removed from our streets and country lanes. Essential services have been restored, thanks in no small part to the largesse of our fellow Alliance members who, even in their own struggles, have reached out to our fledgling nation with food, medical supplies, fuel, and (Most importantly) manpower. Dollars and technological assistance are flowing again, and there seems to have been some curious, yet silent announcement that it is once again time to grow in our fair land.
Schools, hospitals, airports and highways are nearly all colored yellow just from the construction cones around them. All who can are working to revitalize the electrical grid, the information channels, and even some few mainstream media outlets are re-commencing programming for our citizens. We have not yet recovered, but we are recovering. It brings pride to our heart, and a tear towards an eye as we look upon our valiant subjects doing what Merlinus has very quickly become known for throughout the region. We proceed forward. Yes, it is true that we have been forced to survive a few backward steps, but we march boldly forward, singing our national songs with much purpose and power. It is high Spring in our land, and the city and countrysides are awash in fresh color as nearly every lawn even the size of a postage stamp displays their victory gardens, trellises or even porch boxes.
This is the indomitable spirit of Merlinus. As our country, and her peoples recover from their recent wounds, it is not without notice that birds still sing, the mountains have not yet moved, and the Sun stays her course in the sky. This presents a pleasant, yet unseeming powerful statement that speeches, fine words and political stumping could never speak. To understand Merlinus, the nation must be seen in action. Refugees continue to spill over our borders, as in many other recently inundated lands, yet it is pleasing to note that nearly every new refugee picks up a shovel, a trowel, or a hammer as they enter our land. They ask only to help, to earn their citizenship. In the first days following the war, there was no one at the borders to greet them (Or deny them) as they sought a new land to call their home. Now, it is most often their fellow countrymen and women they see as they step gently across that invisible, but all-important border to freedom and new opportunity. They do not complain, nor ask. Simply, they do. There is no one to ask, for everyone of our people is busily repairing, or -re-creating what was even as our government assaults the future with those things that will be.
Our population is increasing, our people are happier than in a long time, and production is nearing it's pre-war hectic pace. There is a difference in the land, however; everyone feels it, senses it. We are a better people, better off than many of our neighbors and even our bordering nations. Our alliance has provided us with the necessary umbrella of safety as we begin the rebuilding. More will be required as we find permanence for immigrants nearly equal to our pre-war population. Every hand is on the plow. There is no grumbling or complaining, no stilted speechifying in the courtyards of Merlinus today. There is nothing which needs to be said. Our people know much better than we what must be done, and they are doing it.
We stand in the ramparts, watching all these things and more, and we marvel at just what it is that we have been given. Somehow, all we really want is to give more. We are learning, you see, that it is in giving that we receive. What we receive is so much more than we could ask, or expect of our subjects. There is sure to come a time, much sooner than later, when we will realize, as a nation, that we are "beyond" this past war. We also know that there may well be other conflicts which require our sacrifice, duty, loyalty, and fidelity. But from this vantage point, we need not fear or call into question the response should that time again visit itself upon us without invitation. These are not the sad days of loss, nor the fearful days of reflection for our land. These are the active days of rebuilding, re-bonding neighbor with neighbor. It may seem rather mundane or ordinary, even pedestrian. It is not. This is the birth of a newer, stronger Merlinus. We are neither her Father nor her Mother; we are both. We are her King, and no ruler could ever hope to be more proud of such a good and faithful child.
Plans were made. Now they are being faithfully executed at every level of governance. For their Monarch, yet busy, there is not much to do. We watch, learn, and rejoice in these doldrum days of governance. May we have many, many more.
    Best Wishes, etc.,
    M

From: The Order Of Light World Headquarters
We have been received with much fanfare to the TOOL Headquarters. An appropriate welcome State Dinner was held, where TOOL Lord Captain Commander GrahamKeatley, along with his alliance staff officially welcomed the kingdom of Merlinus into the TOOL alliance community. It was surely a gala evening, with excellent dinner, music, and festivities that made us realize that, though perhaps a new nation to the alliance, the long history of Merlinus had begun well.
We have visited several important departments within the alliance, and have made long-term friendships with most of the current perma/elected government leaders. These beginnings bode well for a long and lasting relationship between the people of Merlinus and the TOOL alliance. We have discussed issues of importance with the Hand of War, the Hand of Internal Affairs, The Hand of Commerce, the Hand of External Affairs, and many others. We have listened to the plans of the alliance for recovery from the recent conflict, and have pledged our fullest possible support to the rebuilding and growth of the alliance in the near future. The Hand of Foreign Affairs has made a singular impression upon us, and we have dedicated by our oath ourselves to be a diplomat of the Alliance to any foreign nation, or Planet Bob alliance in which TOOL seeks our expertise for such purposes as the Foreign Affairs Department may require.
We have met with the inquisitors of the alliance, and have had fruitful meetings regarding the prosecution of future wars, esepecially where our nation is concerned. We spoke of some troublesome difficulties we experienced during the recent conflict, and also committed our military might to any future conflicts the alliance might encounter. We gave our complete thanks and gratitudes to this able agency for the immediate and unending assistance, support, aid and encouragement of the Department of War to our people in the recent times of grief. The support in the rebuilding of our nation has been constant and unlimited. Because of their aid, Merlinus is beginning the long recovery process with much less difficult circumstances than we would otherwise endure.
We have met with environmental specialists, who have given us their word for continuing assistance until such time as the people of Merlinus can feel safe in breathing the air, and drinking the water of our nation. In a communique from home today, it has been reported to me that the environmental numbers are reflecting a better condition already, even as this assistance begins. Our concerns have been heard, and help hasw been promised--and quite obviously already delivered. This is a good, hopeful and promising outlook for our people. Medical and food aid are currently in sufficient quantities to meet the mid-term needs of the people of Merlinus. We will be petitioning the alliance during this visit for significant rebuilding aid, so that our nation can return to it's former greatness, and begin the process of nation-growth in the short term. We were even given an opportunity to contribute to the official alliance communique of "The Tool Times", and given great discretion by its Editor-In-Chief.
Overall, we are greatly pleased, and highly encouraged with the reception we have received at alliance headquarters. What we found from a distance is even more strongly impressed upon us in person. Over the next few days, we will have further interactions in our attempts to best establish good and lasting relationships between our nation and The Order of Light. What they can do, they do. What they cannot do, they have no pause in their explanations of why a thing cannot be done. These frank and open discussions are most beneficial for the long-term relationship between our nation and TOOL. No question has been ignored; no request so far has gone without discussion. TOOL seems positively disposed toward our nation. We sincerely hope that is a condition which lasts a very long time indeed.
    M
PS: We were gratified to receive a very special gift from the good folks at TOOL upon our arrival. In return of our gift of the royal seal of Merlinus I to be prominently displayed within the TOOL headquarters, we were pleased to find this gift awaiting us: a new royal emblem:

  10. Merlinus
    From the Throneroom
    General Discussions with Councillors
We are pleased to see some semblance of normalcy returning to our beloved nation. The heroes have been honored, and those who can are manning the shovels, spades, and using their bare hands to remove the rubble from the streets of Salerno, our Capital. Numerous reports from the countryside indicate that similar scenarios are being played out in our large metropolitan areas, small towns, hamlets and villages throughout Merlinus. Although much of the government is still inoperable at the moment, we are finding our Ministers fast and hard at the tasks associated with beginning the rebuilding process.
Communications with the Alliance have slowed from the mid-war frenzy of the recent "War of the Reset" (WoR), to a much more routine number of daily dispatches; leaving the rulers to transform their nations once again to a peaceful stance. Communications between nations and TOOL are secure, and we are discussing aid with the Alliance for many of our most urgent needs. National re-building is the first priority, with our technological and infrastructural needs being met as fast as is humanly possible. While we see the damage and hardship of our people, we are grateful to the Alliance for correctly assisting those with much more urgent and severe needs than our own. As the people of Merlinus have performed above and beyond the call, so has the Alliance. Rather quickly, diplomacy is being re-commenced at the Alliance level: first with it's own nations, then with the demands of reparations, and even renewing contact with our Treaty partners. A sense of usualness permeates the upper levels of our Alliance. We are trying to create a like posture here in the kingdom's headquarters. when the subjects see us calm, they presume calm is called for--and are calm.
Meanwhile, we are re-tasking ourselves with the examination and learning of our own governance. Councils are being formed between nation leaders of the Alliance to assist one another with the realities of an after-war world. Newspapers, schools, hospitals, and our business/commercial centers are slowly returning to activity. It will take a very long time to resume normal operations. We are working together to provide one member's weaknesses with another member's strength. We have made plans to travel to Alliance Headquarters as the Commander-In-Chief of Merlinus to discuss and debrief the Alliance Military Commanders on our experiences during the WoR. We anticipate seeing the Alliance leadership, sharing and learning, and growing together. We hope to get updates and, if possible, final numbers on the latest conflict. We will be inspecting Alliance troops, and creating trade and diplomatic missions while there. This will be our first official Alliance visit as Head-of-State, so meetings with all TOOL Hands will be more abbreviated than perhaps will be possible in the future. Still, we do intend to bring matters to the Hands of Commerce, Foreign Affairs, War, and Internal Affairs on this important visit. We hope these heroes do not believe any less of us, as we expect full exposure and accountability from them. We will focus on the future, yet we will not forget the honor of those who made the ultimate sacrifice as if only yesterday.
We will look expectantly forward. The longer we can engage our friends, the less the likelihood we will have to engage our adversaries. We grow, and TOOL grows into the future.
    So let it be done.

  11. Merlinus
Today stands as a singular moment in my CN growth. It is upon the occasion of my acceptance as a full member into The Order of Light that I wish to make a few remarks.
I have seen long-standing members of this Alliance remove themselves from it's ranks over the past few days. Some have done so during hostilities, without the convenience of being PoW's. Some have done so because of their strong allegiance to other confederations. Some have done so because of personal disputes, or philosophical disputes with others in this Alliance. I feel relatively confident that TOOL is not the only Alliance to see this.

I am 54 days into my CN life. I am 54 days into my TOOL life, as well. For those of you who have multiple years as CN players, you may well think I have nothing of value to offer. I beg to differ.

Some say the community has changed. It has.
CN stands in a state of diminishing players. In my view, CN is not marketing itself as the growing and dynamic game it is today. Balance and "leveling" have done the game a great justice, as the innovations have consistently continued. The IT team has done a remarkable job not only bringing new innovations to the playing field, but also of listening to it's members. CN has given it's membership more of what they want than just saying "No!". They understand that the members make the game. At least, members make the game last.

Some say the community has changed. It has.
From multi-nation wars to multi-Alliance wars, CN has developed over these past years into a form not recognizable from its beginnings. To the largest degree, I submit it is because of the players that this is true. Being a single nation in CN is now considered a bad thing. I'm not so sure I agree with that. But, it cannot be argued that the dynamics of Alliance life has certainly brought many new dimensions or fun AND reality to the game. Some of those who were original nations of CN have been off, in the RL, gaining education and life experiences. This is a good thing. However, one of the truly awesome aspects of CN as a game is that it is very easily multi-generational. Adult players bring much to the game. Youth brings its own legendary part to play, as well. Some of us are of such tooth-length that we bring a lifetime of experience to the new game. Some of us are retired military commanders, for instance. We have something to offer this game from a real world perspective that those not yet of voting age cannot possibly hope to bring. Many of our players are, as we look at this page, on a real life fighting front, defending their nation's hopes and glories with resources up to and including their own blood. They should not be ignored. Youngsters are playing this game at an amazing rate. The reasons are many. Friends bring them to the game. They have a direct interest in the political, economic and other proportions of the game. Some feel that playing CN is the only real way of making sense out of a world that, to them, just doesn't make any sense whatsoever.

Within Alliances, the community has changed. Of course it has.
Some go, some grow, and some stay, even as some of us begin our Alliance life. Continuity is a mark of extreme success within an online gaming community, especially one that requires no fee. If you make donations to the cause: Thank you. If more member nations did, I believe we would see more in the way of requested features being put into an already full pipeline. As many have mentioned, $25.00/month is not so much to pay for all you get in play. These folks work tirelessly to bring the very best game it is possible for them to create, every day. Having been a programmer for more years than many would believe possible, I am well aware of the requirements. The entire Alliance concept is (for the most part) player driven. No single player can create, maintain, and grow an Alliance. In my Alliance (TOOL), there are well over 200 member nations. As a professional musician and conductor, I can tell you (without knowing our Alliance Lord Commander at all) much of what his daily life must entail, as he attempts to herd cats of such a bulky clutch. In the end, we must each and all finally agree that, of all the possible ways of doing a particular thing, his is the one that is best. Authority and responsibility may be delegated, but it is to the leader alone for the final accountability of the success or failure of the Alliance. This leader has done so with honor, respect, and vision; not because I say so, but because of what so many others say, or have said of his leadership.

His choice, of the many available to him, has been consistently (from all I have read or learned) to strengthen his community. When it was neither the easiest or most agreed-upon strategy, it was his determination alone which won out. This is, more than anything else, a proof of his leadership quality. In the intervening months between wars, TOOL has consistently out-performed other Alliances in qualities that few see. Recruitment, for example. Instruction of applicants has been of the very first order.
Members who don't know me from Adam have welcomed me, followed me, helped me, aided me, counselled me, and generally befriended me in ways that simply amaze me. Not merely in quantity, but in quality. As just one example, I asked for specific help one time, and had twelve members of this Alliance offer their personal assistance within one hour. They didn't know anything about me, other than I was an applicant to their Alliance.  When I was too ignorant to even know the questions to ask, I got counselling from members both old and new.
I can tell you how many applicants are in my class (27), what their nations' names are, and how they have fared in the latest hostilities. We have been encouraged, and assisted, in our communications together. I have brought a few new member nations into the game since my signing up now 54 days ago. Every one of those members got no "Alliance Baiting" from me, yet all of them have become part of my Applicants class--of their own accord. They, too got the humpti-gazillion recruitment blizzard notices, a shock to all of us. Yet, from the many, they chose the one. It happened to be the same one I did. I know why I made the choice I made. You would have to ask them why they made the choice for themselves. I can tell you this, however. They feel part of a significant and dedicated community that is willing to do whatever it requires for them to succeed as member nations in the game, and to be strong and believing community members within this Alliance.

I am personally horrified and ashamed of my terrible beginnings in this war. I let my Alliance down because of my ignorance. Yet, my Alliance only thanks me for my willingness to participate. Does this send a message to me? Yes. Does that message matter to me? Yes.
As Tiberius said of Spartacus: "I may well end this war as a dead Spartan, but I will forever be a Spartan!" I may well be the worst TOOLie on Planet Bob (and I don't think anyone would disagree with me!), but I will forever be a TOOL on Planet Bob. There is no condition in my mind where I would EVER be anything else. Why? Because the community of TOOL is, in both victory and defeat, honorable. It is, as an Alliance, loyal. It requires nothing, makes available everything (and more) an Applicant could ever hope to want or need to succeed within CN, and within the Alliance.
I cannot express my deepest thanks and grateful heart as a new member nation to each and every member of TOOL for creating THE Alliance that it is at this moment. When, in RL, I find hope a difficult thing to discover, it is so nice to find it here. I've been around a bit, and this ain't my first rodeo. It is so good to see the overpowering determination of some 200 individuals to do good, and BE good as to make me pause. Most of all, it gives me hope that I can master this game, and the rigorous requirements of that Alliance that made it possible.

When in war, your enemies count their merit in the number of battles they have had, and lost to this Alliance, it says something significant about that Alliance. When, in war, other Alliances go far out of their way to even consider entering hostilities with your Alliance because of what the Alliance stands for, war says something about your Alliance. When, in war, the idea of taking your Alliance's flag is considered not only impossible, but the worst of all possible acts, heinous to the znth degree--universally, that says something for that Alliance. When the newest Applicant to that Alliance is given a target into a war, and is immediately targeted by no less than eight nations of the opposite Alliance, that says something about your Alliance. That every one of the nations targeting you is significantly lower in any definable degree than you really says something about you as a member of said Alliance. When your targeted enemies start counselling you on how to actually conduct your battles against them, because of the Alliance you have applied to, that says something about the respect your enemy has towards you AND your Alliance.

When the purpose of your Alliance entering the war is to honor a Treaty, that says a lot about your Alliance. When your being IN the war positively affects your Treaty Alliance (even if only deflection defense), that says TONS about your Alliance. When your Alliance comes into war knowing defeat is the only possible  outcome for your Alliance, yet the honor of your Alliance to its Treaty partners requires it, that says much about your Alliance. When your Alliance starts dusting those targeting it, in defense of your Alliance partner, that says a lot about your Alliance. When, in order to save your Alliance, you surrender to fantastically outrageous terms, so that your Treaty partners won't have to, I think that says something about your Alliance. When you formally accept those terms, and get more than 300 posts congratulating you for your performance in War, while only six (6) comments have anything negative to say about your prosecution of that War, I think that says tons about your Alliance. When the negative comments say only that they think you having to pay reps at all is a bad thing, doesn't THAT say something about your Alliance?

They say that nothing spoils a good war like an outbreak of Peace.

What will my Alliance show in Peace? What will I be able to contribute to the Alliance that I have come to know in these past 54 days? How will the Alliance, and the community that supports it, change in the future?

I honestly cannot tell you. Based upon what I have experienced first hand, only as a reader of those who would know much better than I, I believe I can know of what I should expect, however.
You cannot create, maintain and grow an Alliance that lasts more than three years as one of the most (if not THE most) respected Alliances on CN by mere whimsy, luck, or happenstance. The community that has been built in this Alliance has been built with sweat equity from it's leadership team and it's member nations. Tears have created a bond that no amount of talk could ever form. Honor, equity, and a willing heart towards it's members is what I expect to see in Peace. Our reparations will be paid, on time. We will rebuild, and yes, we will re-arm. We will grow member nations that conscribe to the core principles of TOOL. If you do not, by this point, fully know and understand what those core concepts are, then you are either illiterate, or dead.

In conclusion, it is my belief that war does not create community, war proves community. Nor does Peace, for that matter. Peace continues community.  Alliances do not last if they are not first honorable to the task. Alliances must treat their member nations, and their fellow Alliances with the respect they would wish to have visited upon them. Those who do not will perish. But, those who do? Well, those Alliances last forever. They build strong and lasting community.
I would rather be the lowest, worst, most ill-respected member of TOOL than the hero of any other Alliance on Planet Bob. I'm going to work very, very hard to be worthy as a total TOOL. Not because my Alliance requires it. Because my Alliance permits it, encourages it, supports and endorses it. They expect it of me, and are willing to show me the way to achieve that goal.
I wouldn't want it any other way.

Live Forever In The Light of TOOL!

Carnage abounds. Many have said this is either:

    1) The most damage-inflicting war in the history of Planet Bob, or
    2) The most expensive war in the history of Planet Bob.

I can review the Wikis, and observe the writings of others who would certainly be more dependable than I. I can ask, and get opinions.

What I do know is that this war has brought Merlinus to its knees, but for the aid and assistance of our Alliance. The missiles are not raining down upon us at the moment. Foreign invaders have repaired to their shores for the time being. Our air raid sirens are silent as I write this. (These are not complaints, mind you.)

For the nations who felt compelled to strike against us, even as we were compelled to strike another nation at the behest of the Alliance who now streams aid, food, medicine, and temporary housing into our nation for the benefit of a bereft people, it is good that we have established this uneasy peace. I presume that, as we tend to our injured, wounded, and many thousands of dead, so do they.

It is an interesting notion that we have had to rent land from other nations for nothing more than the purpose of creating cemeteries. Several times more than the population of our land have fallen in battle. We are not a "renter" nation, nor is it our intention to be one. We are a sovereign nation, with a vision and a purpose larger than ourselves. We are accounting our losses, struggling to somehow create a remnant of our infrastructure while putting those who can back to work--for the moment.

We do sincerely hope this aggression is over. We believe our Alliance made this request of ultimate sacrifice from genuine and sincere need. We have been pleased, and very proud to answer that call, as we will whenever asked. We do not seek, nor do we wish to experience the vulgarities of war. Let that not confuse anyone. When required, Merlinus has shown her willingness to face obliteration rather than to let tyranny take hold. We would rather die free than live under bondage to any nation.

Many have paid that ultimate sacrifice, and are the newest heroes of Merlinus. Many more may be called to that honorable end. We see sunlight for the first time in many days. There is an eeriness, a pall fallen over our land. People walk among the ruins, yet they look up with a smile to the Sun. They have, at least for this moment, survived.

Much must be done, soon. As their Monarch, it falls to our leadership to lead now, from the front. As we bury our dead, tend our wounded, and survey the damage that makes for the costs of war, so must we use every hand to rebuild, restore, and if necessary re-arm. This may well have been our first taste of battle, but we are by no means deluded into thinking it will be our last. Yes, we must become much better prepared, especially defensively for the next time someone collaborates with their affiliates against us. Yes, we must build, as soon as possible, an effective fighting force. We will do both. We must also rebuild our national identity, infrastructure and technological foundations. We will do that, too.

That is, after all, the one true reason to look out into the light of day. Tomorrow will come, once this day has passed. Merlinus still stands, sovereign and free. For just today, that is enough. We wish no ill-will to anyone, and hope there is none towards our nation. To those nations who have felt the full wrath of Merlinus, we wish you well. Perhaps, in the days to come, we can again be friends. Nevertheless, know that it is our national will and deepest desire that Peace reign. Perhaps on Planet Bob, that is just too much to wish for. If we do not at least try, the future is already known. If we choose to seek, deliver, and sustain Peace, we can have it. As one wise sage has said, "An eye for an eye makes nothing more than two blind people."

My people can see the daylight. Can you?

Private: Communique from HRH Merlinus - For Your Eyes Only
    Salerno Palace
    February 7th, 2010
Does anyone happen to know what I and Fred Flintstone have in common?
We both can look through our living room window and see nothing but rubble.
We have been attacked twice today.
By four different countries. 8 separate attacks. We still stand, as it were.
Our poor subjects are nearly, but not quite defeated. The People's Government is still in operation, if that is an appropriate term. Our technology has, umm, taken a decided step backwards. Our global defense network is now two Dixie Cups and a string. There is nobody on the other cup. Our shining testimony of architectural superiority, our Military Headquarters, is now running on a campfire and sticks. Without the presence of our exalted defense forces, the people have gone into Anarchy.
We would find words to say, but there are nearly no ears, other than our own to hear them. Blood and broken bodies are strewn in streets that are flowing red. Yet, those few who survive are standing watch with whatever weapons they can find or create. This is a very dark hour in the very short history of Merlinus. While my heart is laden with the heaviness of loss, I am so very proud of what my people are doing in this greatest hour of our short nation's history. They refuse to relent. Old men, women and even children man the guard. Tattered and wounded are standing watch to defend our country from the aggressors of SPARTA. We have been aided by our Alliance in whatever ways we have requested, to whatever degree they have been able. We find no fault with our friends in TOOL.
Were there radios, we would attempt communications with our Alliance. Were there so much as a bicycle remaining serviceable, any surviving subject of this nation would volunteer to risk death to carry our urgent plea to our Alliance leadership. Even our Treasury has been plundered by the invaders, leaving us with only one marble, a postage stamp, and (strangely enough) a ball of lint. Even in my humble working place, there was left nothing standing save a roll of toilet tissue and a light bulb on my desk. With them was a note. It said:
"When you screw this in and see what's left of your sorry nation, you're gonna need the other." It took me a moment to understand the meaning of this cryptic missive.
They were correct. My tears for my nation flow without ceasing. In the only reasonable move possible, I am attempting to call up our few reserves for homeland protection. Our forces are positioned as well as they can be, given the mood and temperment of our people. I fear they will set upon their own defenders in pure outrage at the raping, looting and pillaging the invaders have perpetrated upon our people and lands. (Heavy on the pillage!) I sit here on a broken toilet with no running water, constipating my next move.
I am their leader, and my people have responded each and every time I have asked anything of them. If we can defend, we can rebuild. If not, we are lost.
    Hiya, Barney.

The War rages on. We get, from our personal perspective at least, no sense of cessations being imminent. Our people are struggling, yet have seemingly found a resolve that has impressed us deeply. They simply refuse to die, or lay down and become a willing victim to the carnage around them. Even as Aid is waning because of the excessive costs of war to everyone, we hold. We hold not because of military might or awesome defenses. But, our meager defenses have significantly helped our cause. We can do very little in aggressive offense, but we are doing what we can. Our enemies have learned an important lesson about this nation. You may eventually win, but it will not be without a cost that you probably are not willing to pay. Winning for Merlinus is now measured by the watchword of our people: "Survive until dawn!" The cry rings out across the land, taken up as a clarion call to purpose and resolve by every citizen, from Hamlet to metropolis. As the people begin to believe, so does their ruler.
Even though we may be a fledgling nation, the people have somehow decided that, to the last man, woman and child they will fight with stones and sticks if need be, but they will fight. Surprised, but intensely proud, it is the people of Merlinus that have taught us a lesson. When you aren't certain about your future, take things one day at a time. Military might is a necessary and moral imperative for any nation, but that is not the sum total of it's strength. Strength comes through the being of this nation from the relentless will of her people. The might of an Alliance is of no less measure. The Order of Light (TOOL) has never failed to respond to our need where and how it could. One request, and other member nations have come running. Equipment, soldiers and money are among the treasure others have sacrificed from their own battles to come to our assistance. Those who found us as easy pickings in Merlinus may have well misjudged one of our greatest strengths: WE ARE TOOL!
I hope we can survive intact. But I have learned that survival is only worthy when it comes with honor. Our people know honor. It is all that keeps them struggling to light a campfire, or hand-pump petroleum products into damaged and failing remnants of our distinguished armored and air forces. We will survive on our terms alone. This is now a personal battle for our people. Daily they earn the right to determine the future of their nation. We will be a strong enough leader to follow their lead. No one has earned the right more than our people. From wherever they have found this well of will, it is they who are now feeding their Monarch, not the other way around.
For that, we will forever be grateful.

    DATELINE: Salerno
    February 6th, 2010
HRH Merlinus I has released a short statement this morning:
    WAR MEMO 01-001
    "Citizens of Merlinus:
When in the course of human events, it befalls our nation to take arms, it must be for only one of three reasons. We must either be attacked in an unprovoked aggression by a power outside our borders; we must be attacked by an enemy of the State, or finally we must be asked to engage a mutual enemy of this nation's Alliance: The Order of Light (TOOL).
This last reason has come to our shores today. I have just received an urgent communication from the TOOL Lord Captain Commander. He requests our urgent attention to an enemy that has proven to be a bit more than originally bargained for by the Combined Alliance Supreme Council. Only moments ago, I have received the first battle communique from our beloved General Octavius Flavius, who rose from his well-earned retirement to lead our forces into the first-ever battle conflict in this nation's history. He reports that our valiant forces, in a mutual attack with other alliance forces, had an overwhelming victory against the enemy. Ours was a surprise attack, following a combined lead attack by our allies earlier in the evening.
We have suffered casualties in both our land and air forces this morning. Reserves are enroute to the front as we speak. We have seen our first battle outcome to be a complete victory, but it has come at an extreme cost. Over 1,000 of our sons and daughters have given the ultimate sacrifice for their King, their homeland, and the Alliance. But, even as their blood flowed, they watched their enemy die before them. To the mothers and fathers of the fallen heroes, whose names shall forever live in our memories, you may be extremely proud that your loss is shared by your Sovereign, upon whose orders they went eagerly into the fray.
While we are not at liberty to give specific details at this time, we wanted to let you know that the increased military activity around several of our largest cities is for a reason. Marshalling yards have been established. Troops are being deployed around the clock. We must now attend to matters of homeland defense. For so many years, we have trained together for this moment. Do not doubt that the enemy will retaliate against our peaceful nation. Be prepared. Gather your emergency supplies. Help our homeland's defenders prepare for the attack which will most surely come. Do all you can to help those fellow countrymen who have answered the call to arms, both at home and abroad. It is for this reason that we must declare a period of Marshal Law throughout the land, until further notice. We are assured you both understand the need for such drastic measures, and will joyfully comply in the name of loyal unity. Joyously perform your duties by day and night, and preserve our homeland.
We will be broadcasting over the Merlinus National News Network as the situation warrants. Any inquiries should be directed only to the official government sources. Our land is, until further notice, in a state of War. May the joys of Merlinus soon be restored to us all."
    More news as it develops.

We are most pleased to know that there is an alliance-wide communications device called (strangely enough) IRC. We made our inaugural entrance into the communications channel, and found no irksome demeanor whatsoever there. IN fact, two leaders were willing to share privately with us some terribly important news regarding our own nation, and how we might better rule and reign in it. We were most impressed! We are looking forward to future relations with these leaders, and feel once again as if our decision to join TOOL was the best of all possible choices. We posted our first communique home today, reporting on things as we have found them here in Merlinus.
While the current conditions of the country are nearly deplorable, we have found the subjects to be most amenable to hard work. It is a sadness that our taxes have had to be so radically increased, yet we demand that our budget be balanced. We are cautiously building the national infrastructure, keeping a close eye on the international events of the war raging around us. We are trying to learn as much as possible about the world in which we find ourself ruling. There are numerous forms of assistance available to us as members of The Order of Light, but among the very best are the leaders themselves. It does astound us at the willingness and cordiality extended to us as we begin our reign.
The issues of State do take most of our time. The overwhelming nature of the task alone is sufficient to humble one of even minimal mentation. Even as we begin the necessary task of governance, the list of daily responsibilities grows at a staggering rate. Nation building is one thing that requires the first place in my concern, and the first responsibility of good monarchy. Yet, the presence of nation-to-nation building tasks seems to be of particular joy to us. Our subjects will never know that monarchy is a 24 hour job, with very unsubstantial pay. Ours intends to be a full-service government, and every necessity of satisfactory daily life among the subjects is our first concern, after of course national security. Ours is the inherent sovereignty of our people, yet the recent past of reign has been less than satisfactory for our people, as they willingly tell us at every opportunity. The cultural diversity of our people help us bring possible solutions to the many challenges before us
This is an historic moment for Merlinus. Shortly, we will be required to respond in accountability to our people publicly. We have found welcome at every stop on our nation tour, and do look forward to continued relations with our subjects. We do not take lightly the fact that they did not choose their Monarch. Ours is the task to never allow any subject to regret the Monarch they have, or the Monarchy under which they live.
    Let it be so.

We find that our environment is akin to swampland, and nearly unsustainable for life above ground! This latest war has cost so many so much, yet there seems to be no end in sight
We are registered on IRC, but as yet have no auth set sent to us to interact with the other nation's leaders in the TOOL world. This is vexing. The answer to the question is that the war is requiring the time and attention of our fearless leaders. We can accept this, yet it is we feel an affront to our royal selves. It also puts us behind in the Academy, whee Phase III looms in the near future.
But the Academy has been put on hold, as wel. I have completed my first 3x3 tech deal. I did it poorly for me, but chose immediate distribution: again because of the nefarious dealings between what should be peaceful nations. Future tech deals will follow regular guidelines. Another unfortunate cost of was. We have been paid for one tech deal, yet not for the other. We wonder if the nation still exists, and we are afraid to find out. I still have to wait out the disposition of the war, or of the days until the trade deal expires to find out if the tardy buyer will forward their tribute to our realm. The 3x3 formula clearly outlined in the Academy will be followed henceforth, war or no war. This is another cost of the dreaded war.
About all we can do now is to walk amongst our people, trying to keep them happy, safe, and well in the midst of conflict raging around them. We hear the voice of the people, who have no desire to commit thousands of their sons and daughters to the melee in our midst. The sadness over lost loved ones in other nations because of this needless conflict have us stymied. This too is a cost of war. The advisors, members of the elite high council of TOOL, are not very quick or forthcoming with a response to requests for the basics of this realm; namely a simple means of communicating with our people, much less some other nations.
Such costss will not show up on a stat sheet. Yet, the los is every bit as real as the statistical faderol on the alliance page. I know because with all the free time on our hands, we do look. Nevertheless, our brave leader has made a special request for these voluntary measures for the sake of TOOL. We shall gladly do so.
When will this ridiculous war end? Oh, to be Phase III!
So is it said, so is it done.

We do not yet know. It would seem that the confusion is shared amongst others, as well. Patience will win out. Our reign today has been light, and not so terribly difficult. Religion and Government forms were artificially changed for the impressions upon our people. We are continuously concerned about the environment of our nation, with radiation levels becoming nearly unbearable. Thankfully, a war bunker was in place long before our arrival. Yet, necessity requires us to remove to the summer Capitol of Salerno for some days in an attempt to clear the air, as it were. With a skelton staff remaining behind, we have effected our move successfully today.
We now wait for Phase III, and then IAS. I am learning more about the game through the fair auspices of the TOOL Alliance than I could ever have gathered on my own.We are grateful for the help, and proud we have chosen wisely for our alliance. One of the cardinal rules of Monarchy is that flexibility must always be the first key to any plan of governance. And, the second is like unto it: It is the smallest detail that fells rulers and nations. These lessons are being carefully imprinted into our brain now. They will be well-learned. Tomorrow will see a new dawn for Merlinus, as the people are happier with a slightly lower (25%) tax rate than in recent days. We wish to complete the trade circle with Mistress Sara, and begin the arduous task of instigating foreign aid negotiations.
The Order of Light (TOOL) has been a very welcome alliance to us since our arrival. We do look forward to a very long and prosperous affiliation with this powerful group. We are most appreciative for the assistance received thus far, and can only hope that we will someday be of like assistance to those yet to come into the alliance. Today, we have hope.

We are progressing well, but not as fast as we might wish, through the TOOL Academy. Phase I went well, and swiftly passed. Now the Phase II studies are definitely ramping up, and taxing our brain as we struggle with our first trade. The first Trade Agreement has been inked, and is with the nation of Deutch Valkyrie by its Monarch harold1022pc. As HRH has ruled only one day, I find myself in the senior position, yet have been taught by one newer to this role than myself.
The first goal is the successful completion of the TOOL Academy, then immediately followed by TOOL's IAS. I do look forward to both. The subjects are in love with me today, despite the advanced taxation rate I was sadly forced by conditions I found upon my arrival. Yet, with the increased cattle and iron made available through the favorable trade agreement today, I look forward to continued population growth and land acquisitions.
Things are in a flurry here in Merlinus, yet it seems as though progress, though somewhat difficult, are satisfactory. My reign celebrates it's 14-day anniversary today. Despite what that might at first appear to express, I am pleased. One could say that even survival for this short time is a definitive step forward; perhaps even a victory of sorts.
Tomorrow, a full day is required for attending to the kingdom. That is enough.

    Day One of our Reign

We have been graced with many leaders who wish to establish relations and alliances with us. Hardly had our royal furniture been placed in the Palace but we were required to respond to some 44 requests for alliance relations! It seems to be a very nice group of rulers. We did see several offers which, sadly, we had to immediately refuse due to obvious differences in national philosophy and/or ruling differences.
We have, we are pleased to announce, found an alliance that, at least for our purposes, pleases us immensely. The Order of Light (TOOL) has extended to us a most gracious offer to join their alliance, help us with the establishment of rule, and assist us with whatever needs we may discover as we begin the necessary work of Kingdom rule. Subjects have no idea the requirements of their Monarch to keep them safe, well, and happy. But, my life and training at the foot of my father have prepared me well for the task at hand which will, if successful, last a lifetime of most satisfactory service.
Having allied ourselves with TOOL, we are receiving much needed instruction on the current world situation. The one thing we realize is that our learning curve is very steep, and much attention is required. For today, however, having established alliance and getting settled in the palace have been deeply satisfying efforts.
May each day bring us such success.

We have endeavored to succeed in Phase II of the Academy, yet we feel ourself lacking in the understanding of things of the trade variety. This alliance has it's own very strict rules of trade, both for tech and for resources. I need a harbor, an FA, and a bank. I need to establish one more trade circle for my fourth slot. 3 of 4 are active, but that last one eludes us for some reason. Patience. I see where those joining the Alliance after I did are already full in there resource trade slots. Right now, I'm not being particular too much about what to trade, but we are certain to trade only within the alliance, for now. Wars are waged around us, and we know not who is friend or foe. Confusing. We have submitted the Phase II documents, and pray they will be acted upon favorably. I have to begin Foreign Trade as quickly as possible, for TOOL to be mighty! We are very pleased to be with this alliance, and look forward positively to a long a lustrous relationship within the Alliance.
Senate seats are being claimed, yet I am still such a recent regal, I am unsure of world affairs. I cannot even figure out my own subjects at this point. Yes, we are confused. But, we do progress forward at our best rate, with all hopes of bringing glory and honor to the Alliance.

    And, Thus It Begins!

]Upon the recent death of our father, HRH King Aqueous Humour, we have ascended the throne of Merlinus. After some five days' journey, we are finally arrived at our royal abode. If first impressions are of any value, this poor kingdom and her people have been, for quite the lack of another word, neglected. We shall endeavor to right that malodious wrong forthwith. But alas, we have nothing with which to call a "Tool of Monarchy" at this moment.
Until we can receive our necessary matter, there is very little we can do. But, we can do something. After all, we are now King. It promises to be a slow, arduous task to establish this Kingdom without disturbing the already fragile peace amongst our people. Slow steps which immediately benefit and gratify the people of Merlinus will be the best course. Already we are learning important monarchical rules: Kings do not guess, believe, surmise, question, or doubt--ever. We decide, move, declare, pontificate, and cause nations to quiver with but our most simple words of pronouncement. We RULE!
There are many matters of state which must be immediately seen to. Positions must be granted to the royal government. A Senate must be established, and initiated under the monarchical rules. We do greatly covet good counsel. Between the Ministers, the Senators, and our subjects, we will engage the country.
    May the saints help us!
