its like solving a difficult puzzle, and exercises thinking outside the box something i enjoy doing. plus its fun to have the power to be honest, knowing that at any moment you could bring down a site, even if you dont it feels just as good knowing you could. i would bet the guy doing this has felt wronged and its his way of letting off some steam. instead of shunning him why not ask him why hes doing it, in fact if your reading this coder to coder, why are you doing this? im seriously listening cause i understand. its obvious he's decent, its obvious countermeasures arent working so instead of fighting a battle you cannot win(and trust me 99 percent of you cant) why not try and reason with him? cause if he decides to go nuclear who knows if cn could recover and that would suck. and to answer your question i played around a lil and some people over reacted/had piss poor attitudes, etc. and i thought for a good couple of days of just taking them out, websites, nations, etc. etc. did i feel wronged in the situation yes, did i do some things that were wrong, perhaps? did i harm a thing, no did i help anything, yes. have i got anything but bad attitudes and grief for the help, no. so yea i can see why someone may do this i seriously considered it for days myself.

i respect his skills and i can understand why someone would want to do this, i've considered it myself to be honest.

numbers letters symbols can be easily cracked, ascii is your best protection. now being that this situation is close to my heart, can you name 1 nation who has been taken over that can be confirmed? because the person that i know that got any information from any forums/servers never did a single damned thing with them. and if you think that forums are the only vulnerability then lol at that, what about your php version, your db version, your server op system, on and on, updating isnt just making sure your numbers of your forum match the biggest available it means making your entire system up to date. if you think that just because your forum is up to date there may be big gaping holes in your db's that allow anyone decent to dump your entire db in a small matter of time. I'd venture to say that if anyone wanted to turn this game on its ear they could.

thanks but i don't have a forum for cn, i was meaning what areas do i need help in from jack's comment. but yea everyone should be running the latest patches it only takes a few mins and makes you much less vulnerable. but i will also say anyone visiting any site is susceptible to xss attacks and information is very interchangeable on alot of these forums you all are using.

i havent seen us actually deny anyone since i joined up lol but thats only 134 days, i think the fact that we have a separate aa for our lower ns members is what makes the average so much higher. btw how does this thread turn into a flame fest? reminds me of our boards flame off peeps flame off

salted hashes make a password hash MORE secure. the average password can be cracked in under 3 mins(even salted). imagine if you had over 3gigs of dic files and just ran combined dictionary runs. using those types of runs even passwords such as lsdfnwe(&$$ can be found fairly easily. or perhaps some decent rainbow files. even completely random passwords can be bruted under 10 characters in less than 2 weeks with the proper applications and settings using 1 machine. add a vpn and you'll have access to alot of machines and can greatly decrease that time to even a matter of minutes based on your number of zombies. wanna know how to minimize your risk, don't be a lazy $@! and not update your softwares to the latest version. as an admin of a site you have a responsibility to your members to secure their sensitive data and not leave your pants dropped. and i simply lol at most of you asserting your thoughts when you have no idea of table structures, hashes and salts, etc. to the guy who thinks you can only fetch data from a table if it has a particular name, i guess no one could modify their queries or anything right? i'll even throw this out here to help the community because i find exercises like this fun, if you are serious about security and want someone to go through and find your holes i'll offer my help and solutions to make you more secure. ps. smf is far from invulnerable; also why not pay for a good forum such as vbulletin especially if your forums are hosted on the same server that a game is when someone can simply insert code, pop a box and gain root accesses within a matter of a few minutes?
