6.
Late to the discussion. It is in fact called "Belgian Lace" or "Beer Lace" or simply just "Lace" and here's a link: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b2/Beer_Lace.jpg Good show on the review.
Thanks for that I've never understood the connection, other than it could look slightly like lace if you squinted and had aleady had a few drinks
 7. Ahem. I understand that previous IRON beer reviews have been somewhat controversial I hope to avoid any such controversy with this review, and instead we all can focus solely on what makes beer so well-loved throughout the world. Firstly, as this review is of necessity OOC, please indulge me with a few sentences about OOC me. I am English and 44 years old. I began drinking beer regularly aged 15 through the fortunate circumstances of having a school friend who’s elder brother was dating the daughter of the landlord of a local pub. I could therefore drink under-age, as the landlord was willing to turn a ‘blind-eye’ to me and my mate sitting in his pub at school lunch-times learning how to drink pints. From 15 to 21 I drank beer whenever I could. 9 am. Lunch time. A swift one in between two bus journeys. Before sport. After sport. During sport (nah, that would just be silly). And of course, all evening in the pub, until closing time. 7 days a week. I drank ale, pale ale, brown ale, bitter, stout, mild, lager. I drank keg beers, cask beers, bottles beers, canned beers, even home-brewed beers. I travelled throughout England, Wales, Scotland and the Channel Islands drinking beer. Once I reached 18, I travelled throughout Europe drinking beer. At 21 I met the girl who was to become (and still is) my wife, and who, to this day, will happily tell anyone and everyone, that she ‘saved me’ from becoming a lifelong drunk. tl, dr – I love beer. Of all the beers I have tasted, to pick my favourite wasn’t too difficult. Marston’s Pedigree Premium Ale hand-pumped draught brew. (Not bottled. Not canned. Not squirted into your glass via a tap-stream thingy). I can no longer recall my first pint of ‘Pedi’. That evening has long since faded away into the mists of time. I can no longer remember why I chose to try it, other than “Not tried that before”. What I do know is that once I’d tried it, if I was in a pub that sold ‘Pedi’, that’s what I would choose to drink again, and again, and again. Over time, my drinking habits changed from going anywhere that sold any beer, to wanting to only go to pubs that sold ‘Pedi’. So, what do you get for your pint of hand –pumped Marston’s Pedigree? Anticipation Once you’ve tasted it, and you walk into your local hostelry again, your eyes light-up at the sight of the familiar red stripe on a black background of the brand label on the hand pump. You wet your lips, and maybe start to drool a little (OK, that’s just me ). “Pint of Pedigree, please”, you say, and you watch as the barman pumps a steady stream of beer into your glass. Colour Sometimes it may have a little bit of haze from the sediment in the cask, but that won’t spoil the overall colour. What colour you say? Well, the best I can do, is say it looks like tea before you put any milk in. It is almost clear, so that you can see through it. The head is lovely; slightly off-white, but creamy and foamy, and not too deep so that it sticks in your moustache (if you have one). Aroma The aroma is noticeably caramel at first, before a surprising smell of something akin to butterscotch (or is it liquorice?) hits you. There are woody tones, but surprisingly, not of the oak casks in which it is brewed. Complementing this are the distinctive fruity Fuggles hops and bitter and spicy Goldings hops, with just a hint of nuttiness in the background. Taste Thank admin. We’ve looked at our pint, we’ve smelled our pint, and now we get to drink it. If you want to go to a proper tasting session (spit or swallow anyone?), I’m sure you can find one on that interwebznet. Me, I like to drink my beer. The one thing that for me, sets Pedigree aside here is that it is not gassy. Not even in the slightest. It is medium-bodied, and feels soft and smooth in your mouth. It is malty; light, and slightly spicy, with some dryness there too, and it leaves you wanting more. English beers are often made fun of for being served at room temperature. Please do not drink your pint of Pedigree at room temperature. It should be served chilled, and drunk before it gets the chance to warm up. Aftertaste Although, to me, there is no discernable aftertaste, one thing I feel the need to comment on, is the 'lace' that is left in your glass after you have finished. At least 'lace' is what I have always called it. This is the remnants of the head that sticks to the inside of your glass after you've had a few gulps and then set your glass down again. Pedigree always leaves those 'laces', and I have always thought it was a sign of a good pint. (I tried to find a picture but couldn't). Anyways, with no aftertaste to speak of, let me say something about after-effect instead. This is the main reason I love Marston’s Pedigree. Many, many of the beers I have drunk left me feeling hung-over the next day. Not ‘Pedi’. Not even once. One of the great aspirations of many of my friends during my younger days was to drink two gallons of beer in one evening. 16 pints. I have never managed it. I've got pretty close, but never reached 16. But even after (close to 16) pints of Pedigree, I could get up for work the next day, and put in ‘a good shift’ without any problem at all. To anyone who has never had the opportunity to drink a pint of Pedigree. Try it. Now. Finally, thank you to Fark for giving me the opportunity to undertake this review. Naturally I had to go out and down a few, to ensure my memory wasn't playing tricks o/ Beer Please drink responsibly
