Papal Audience I

As is the custom, the doors opened at 7:00am this morning in the Vatican City, to admit a diplomatic car from the nation of Carthage, of whom a percentage of the faithful resided in. The Pope had granted an audience to the interim governor of Carthage in an effort to broaden what is perceived as a fundamental lack of foreign policy for the Roman Catholic Church insomuch as it's ability to provide for it's followers.

The diplomatic vehicle pulled to a stop outside the Apostolic Palace, where a trio of Swiss Guardsmen escorted Mr. Frederic Manuzzi to the Palace where he was greeted by Cardinal Lustro.

"Please, Mr. Manuzzi, His Holiness is expecting you" the Cardinal said as he showed Frederic through a door where the Pope awaited him eagerly.

The Pope.

Frederic Manuzzi was a smart man. He was not particularly strong and had always been lampooned in the comedy routines for his wimpish looks, but he was as brilliant behind the scenes as he was on a battlefield years ago. His views on religion were strong and his faith even stronger. Despite the official Carthaginian policy of non-sanctioned religion and a general dislike of those who expressed their religious views in public, he was one of the few public figures who was respected for his faith and his ability to keep it clean. He, of course, then nearly fainted when he was in Rome and given an invite to meet and discuss with the new Pope Benedict.

His duties were numerous but he took this seriously. He lowered his head respectfully to Cardinal Lustro as he spoke, then walked quickly through the door. He was overtaken by awe.

"Your Holiness.."

OOC: Apologies for the late reply. //

"My child, welcome to Rome. I pray that you are well in these troublesome times." Benedict said as he sat in the white chair afforded to him in the Papal Office. Around them flashed news and TV cameras of all sorts as they continued with smiling and small talk. This continued for a few moments as the photographers were ushered out of the room, and the real talks began in earnest.

"Tell me of your nation's spiritual situation, insomuch as it pertains to the Church. Is there anything that the Vatican can do for Carthage spiritually? " Benedict said.

"As the entire world knows, Carthage has been.. almost literally fractured into three pieces. The Spanish, the nuclear cities and the fallout-ridden countryside. In the latter two, I fear that my people are losing their faith. Each day I hear of those who forsake God, those who cry out that God is dead with their loved ones. In the past month we have yet to even pierce the outskirts of the two ruined cities. The largest concentration of the faithful were in the two cities of Gibraltar and Carthage. That those two cities were targeted by nuclear blasts has shaken the core of our entire country - our government, our economy, our faith in God." Frederic stopped speaking for a moment as he collected his thoughts again.

"Carthaginians have always supported the Church. Our faith has been strong until now. Religious figures of all kinds are absent from the destruction that is Carthage. There is no representation, there is nobody to keep the faithful together and united. I fear it will continue to spiral down without direct assistance."

Such a horrid state of affairs. God be with us! Benedict thought sadly as he listened to the grim reports of the conditions of the Catholic Church in Carthage. The resources of the Catholic Church at present, were meager at best. Most of the staff, cardinals, clergy and various other personnel were still en route to the Vatican. It would take a few days before the Church was able to function as an integral whole in Italy, let alone Carthage. Yet...something had to be done.

"God is with you, my child. He has not forsaken his beloved church, or his people. In their deepest woes, their hearts still know God. Despite their inequities, God will deliver them through his Holy church. I will send word to the Secretariat to make plans for a Synod of the Bishops in Carthage. Among the people that will come will be Vatican Aid Relief workers, food and medicines. " Benedict said.

"As a city state, our resources are meager. As a church, and the Body of Christ, our resources are limitless to aide and tend to the spiritual needs of the sheep of his flock. As in the days of St. Peter, I too am tasked with the care and maintenance of His church. I will make sure that aide is sent as soon as possible." Benedict finished. He waited for a response.

A Synod?

Frederic was speechless for a moment. While hundreds of millions of dollars in relief had poured in, none of it could be used. There was no person with authority to use any of the money, there was no official body to oversee the process of carrying out any orders and in any case there was sure to be massive fraud. Direct aid in the form of workers, food, medicine was a scarcity and completely unexpected. To have a Synod of the Bishops in Carthage, though..

"Holy Father, I am humbled."

"There is much work to be done, and the Church has a sacred and spiritual responsibility to care for the Faithful. We are all in Christ, and Christ is within us. We must all do our part to take care of one another." Benedict said. He stood, and the doors to the Office were opened, signaling the end of the Papal Audience.

"The aid and relief workers should arrive by the end of the week, and I will convene the Synod sometime at the end of this month. A papal decree will announce it sometime this evening with the details for your Bishops. Please make sure that they are followed and that the Cardinal in charge of the Relief effort, is given wide latitude to distribute aid. " Benedict said, clasping the man's hand.

"May the Peace of The Lord Be With You." Pope Benedict said.

Frederic was almost startled by the touch of Pope Benedict. The man opened his mouth twice to reply his thanks but words would not come out. "Thank you," he finally managed, as he held back tears of gratitude. He nodded at the open doors to the Office and let go of Pope Benedict. He took a moment to gather himself then proceeded out the doors, his body shaking.
