We compliment you on your scientific accomplishment (if a little late), this is a great step forward in finally beating Death. However we can not condone your actions against the natural circle of life and the damage you have already done to it. We implore you to make sure this technology is destroyed immediately, all records or research destroyed also, if this technology was to become available to the masses think of the damage it could do. Please do not make any rash actions in this matter, debate and think of what is best for your people and the world.

"This technology requires resources that normal people do not have. This was a multi-billion dollar project, requiring not only research to fully understand the human brain, but also the construction of computers that have never before been seen in the world, as well as numerous other scientific breakthroughs that would only have occured years or decades later on their own.

And even if this technology was cheap enough for normal people, it would not be released into the public. If everyone turned into a human-turned-AI, no work would be done.

But just as it will not be released, none of the research will be destroyed. This is but the first step to Mankind reaching a higher level of conscience, and there's no way in Hell that I'll destroy it just because it's against the "natural circle of life". Humans are part of life. Things that humans do are part of life.

Thus, computers, artificial as they may be, are part of the natural cycle, because we made them part of it, by building them.

What is your religion?"

"What kind of crazy project do you have for me today, Leclerc?"

"Tanks on legs."

"Tanks on-...Wait, what?"

"Walkers."

"Walkers?"

"Yes. And perhaps mechs."

"Uh, won't those fail horribly when shot at?"

"Well, we don't have to build them two-legged, to we? There's designs for multilegged walkers, though two-legged ones could serve as a kind of support tank. Vehicle. You know what I mean."

"And you think it's worth trying to build these things?"

"Well, we won't know unless we try. There could be some interesting strategies and applications to be used with walkers supporting conventional forces."

"They'd probably be more movile than tanks, at least. Slower, though."

"There may be good use for various kinds in urban, mountainous or jungle environments."

"Do we have jungle? Also, the research and building them will be goddamned expensive. Just look at that huge robot under the Palace of the Republic, 'Sword of the Crown'-"

"Which we still have to rename."

"I know. And it cost the previous government about as much as a goddamned aircraft carrier or two. How would we power these walkers, anyways?"

"We'd need powerful batteries and good Wankel engines, but it's doable. There's already hexapods that fell trees, we'd essentially just need to upsize them a bit, give them armour and slap weapons on them."

"Those would be quite a bit more resilient than 'normal' walkers, I assume?"

"Thanks to their many legs, yes. They'd possibly be less impressive, though."

"So you want to make them more part of the 'awe' aspect?"

"Yes. If we can't build good combat units, they should at least look good. Don't you think so?"

"I guess. They could probably provide decent support for APCs and whatnot. But whatever. It's worth trying it, at least. Go make a prototype or something."

"What do you expect?"

"What I expect? Nothing but failure, at least when using less than four legs."

"But they could be god for morale and-"

"I know that quite well, Leclerc. I've run all the necessary calculations already. It would cost almost 8 billion to build a mere ten functioning prototypes. That doesn't count preliminary tests and prototypes, which will need extensive research et cetera."

"Couldn't you just do everything yourself?"

"Could I? Yes. Will I? No, ecause I want my scientists to work normally. I don't want you to rely on my capabilities."

"I...see. Wel, okay. I'll go and get everything moving, then, I guess."

"Do that."

With that Leclerc left, walking towards secntion M of the complex, which housed most research on military matters.

"Gentlemen, we have work to do. Lots of it, in fact."

"Uh, what exactly?"

"We are to build walkers of various kinds. Most won't be a real problem, I imagine."

"Two legs, too?"

"Yes. With arms, if possible, otherwise without. It'll require all our skill, prowess and technological knowledge to make them work right."

"It's also goddamn crazy. Are we seriously going to build a piloted robot?"

"Big, bulky, can move somewhat like a human. Sounds like from those apanese Anime."

"Only nowhere as advanced."

"I'm quite sure we'll be able to build something that works well."

"Of course. Private entrepeneurs have built numerous kinds of walkers, both with and without arms. If they can do this, I see no reason why we can't do it better."

"We'll need to start from zero, in my opinion. There may be plenty of material for just copying and whatnot, but unless we make everything ourselves, we won't find out every nuance of them."

"That sounds silly."

"Kind of learning by doing, I guess? It does aply to building things that are rather rare, though. And I'd rather do it myself and know every weakness than just copypaste designs and not know all weaknesses and strengths."

"True."

"So, when will we start?"

"Now. Right now."

"What?"

"You heard him. Let's get to work."

"It has been several months since the unexpected fall of the Bund.

Since then, no government has emerged, and the people of Switzerland have taken no steps to becoming independent from the GDR.

In fact, there have been several demonstrations for joining the GDR for good, though there is an obvious need of a protectorate-wide vote for this.

The government has announced that such a poll is being prepared right now, and that the people of the former Bund will have a say in what will happen with the protectorate."

"So, what first?"

"The legs. Real simple, just some hydraulic joints. We'll go from there. After that, the chassis. Or torso, if you want to call it that. If we can get it to be stable and useful, then we'll experiment with just putting guns on, and with arms."

"And if neither works?"

"Neither normal guns nor arms?"

"Yeah."

"Then we give it more legs. We start with two. If we're sure we can make something useful with two legs, we move on to four, six and eight."

"The more legs, the more stable, of course."

"Yes. Artillery and heavy weapons are easy on multilegged walkers. Morelegs and it can cope with the firing more easily."

"What about recoilless guns?"

"Those'd be relatively small...And I'm not sure that would work with ETC guns. Those are standard, as you know."

"True."

"Well, there's work to do."

"Indeed. Let's do this."

"And...go."

The scientists were in a sizable room, easily a hundred meters in length and several dozen in width, while the ceiling was roughly 15 meters above them. At one end, there was a relatively simple construct, having two legs that were connected with each other. The legs were hydraulic and connected to a computer.

The left leg rose, moved forward a few centimeters in the progress and "fell" onto the ground again. The right leg did the same. The only reason why the contraption didn't - couldn't - lose its balance was because the movement of the hydraulics was fast enough so that inertia and physics didn't notice they had work to do.

There was of course also the fact that each leg was lifted only for five centimeters above the ground when the hydraulics did their work, and the entire thing wasn't taller than half a meter of so.

"Well, it works. That's unexpected."

"Not really. That's one of the simplest constructions possible in robotics."

"Mhm, true."

"We still need to make it capable of walking somewhat normally, gentlemen."

"Yes, yes. But that's only a matter of improving the hydraulics, right?"

"No. Hydraulics go only so far. We need nanotubes and electronic measures for perfection, as well as enabling it to actually keep its balance properly."

"The balance part may be hard."

"Maybe. It's mostly not letting gravity do its work and using inertia to achieve that."

"Still a lot to do."

"Indeed. But it'll work over time, no worries."

"Easily said, but not done as easily."

"Of course. But we just have to keep working until it works."

"That'll be expensive."

"So? We have an insane budget for this project. Billions can be spent."

"Where the hell is that money coming from?"

"Mostly, it's just savings from over the years. The nation had a positive balance for most of its existence, mostly because the military never used all funds allocated to it."

"That's good. I guess."

"Let's just keep doing our work."

"Okay."

"Further information from switzerland has reached us. Roughly 74% of the population that is allowed to vote did do so, with 69% voting for becoming a part of the GDR. 15% voted against joining, 2% of the ballots were invalid. The other 14% voted for joiningwith Ital and France, most of these votes were in the western and southern regions of the protectorate.

Thus, the protectorate of switzerland will be incorporated into the GDR, all people within receiving the same benefits as every other citizen of the GDR.

Should anything else interesting happen, we will of course bring those news to you."

"Legs are weird."

"Only when you think about how they work."

"Well, we're doing that right now, aren't we?"

"True."

"Still strange analyzing them like that and whatnot."

"You mean the swaying mechanism or what?"

"Partially, yes. But also the legs walking without a body, just looks a bit unsettling."

"We'll make a body soon enough, no worries."

"I know."

He nodded and they went back to their work, analyzing walking patterns of various animals.

Several scientists were standing around, talking.

"Are there any designs for the walkers yet?"

"You mean what we hope to make?"

"Yes."

"Oh. Sure, but it's possible we won't be able to make those at all."

"Yet."

"Well, yeah. but it's always just a matter of time until something gets done. Just look at the PHASR. It's a light-based weapon, essentially a laser."

"Or our SDI. Electrolasers, using the laser-part to ionize air around it just enough to a powerful electric current can travel through this 'tube' of plasma and fry whatever's on the other end."

"Take the ETC guns we use. Lightyears ahead of normal tankguns, yet cheaper and much more viable than railguns."

"Which we use on our ships, anyways, making battleships useful once again."

"Too bad we're having problems with batteries and power sources, otherwise we could miniaturize railguns for tanks and even infantry."

"Also power armour and so on. We need to find better batteries, then everything else is as good as done."

"Making infantry-sized energy weapons, at least, and the corresponding heavy armour."

"So it's all just batteries..?"

"Ways to store power better and more efficiently, in fact."

"YYes. And only those prevent us from turning from a powerful nation with high-tech equipment into a nigh-unbeatable potential system-wide power with futuristic and incredible weaponry."

"Damned physics. We must beat them!"

"Quantum physics eats normal physics, at least on its scale. We need micro-batteries."

"You think that'd work?"

"it's worth a try. And if it doesn't work, we at least know that it doesn't work. And that's gotta be worth something."

"I guess. But what if we find things that change our understanding of the universe? Would we selfishly keep this knowledge for ourselves?"

"That would be up to Sarkara. He controls the flow of information into and out of the nation. He decides what makes its way out of our borders and what doesn't."

"Mhm. So we could potentially be the only ones to develop certain technologies?"

"Well, from what I know we already have some tech others don't have. Did you ever see Rebel Army or Viniland build more than their initial fusion power plants.?"

"Uh, they did announce building more, didn't they?"

"Announcing isn't necessasrily doing. Some people talk a lot but don't actually do anything."

"True."

"It's similar in Deutschland. They talk a lot about doing things but then they don't do so much."

"Also, their elections. Did you see those?"

"Completely stupid. Of course, all a ploy from another Martens to gain power in a country that doesn't know anything but having a single, authoritarian leader."

"Any real democracy would've gone and made their goovernment with the six or what parties from the first half of the elections."

"There was no need for the second part, but they did it, anyways."

"Silly people, silly Martens."

"Well, can't change that now."

"Unfortunately. but I'm sure that the Chairman will be watching their every move. He'll want to ensure the Rationals in Germans get as much power as the normal government."

"Like that'll ever happen."

"He can at least try."

"Well, yeah...Anyways, let's get back to work."

Several heads nodded, and they finally moved to get back to their work.

"Nanobatteries."

"Excuse me?"

"Nanobatteries."

"Don't you mean nanotubes?"

"No. Batteries."

"Huh. Elaborate."

The two were in the middle of a corridor, on their way to the M-section of the bunker to help with testing the walkers.

"Well, normal batteries discharge over time and can be recharged only very slowly."

"Yes?"

"So I just thought, nano-materials could maybe stop these reactions that do that."

"Well, sounds interesting. It's worth a try, I guess. But how exactly would we do that?"

"I thought about using a kind of nano-lacing so unwanted reactions are suppressed while making it easier to get the juice from the battery. Maybe it'll even enable us to re-load the batteries more easily."

"That would be a great advance, if doable."

"I'll go initiate a project later."

"Good idea."

Since the Rheinmark - and later the Deutscher Bund - were annexed, the borders in the west had changed considerably. The old border defenses were outdated, no longer being on the border. It was thus decided to remove them and restore these regions to their original state. All mines, concrete buildings, et cetera would be removed over the next months.

Further west, at the new border, mere fences with some light towers would be built, roughly one tower every 500 meters. Approximately 150,000 soldiers would be stationed at the German-French border. In the north, the border had expanded, though despite this, troop-numbers were lowered to about 100,000 on the entire border. Towards Italy in the south, only 8 divisions would protect the mountains, while the coast would be protected by 4 divisions due to its importance.

The eastern border was very long and thus 230,000 men would be stationed there, despite friendlier relations with Dalmatia, simply because of the length. Thus 600,000 men were stationed at all borders in total.

Approximately one million soldiers were "left", and they'd be stationed throughout the country in and near strategic cities and other important locations. Most notable were the 10 divisions stationed near Vienna, 100,000 men. Other locations were classified, but anyone with good enough satellites could obviously watch.

Additionally, every division of infantry was supported by a tank-division, 100 vehicles. This of course didn't include APCs, artillery and all the other support that was available.

"So you actually managed to make the legs work?"

"Yeah. They work, at the 'hips',a bit like human hips. We also gave them very heavy feet for stability and made the knee-joints work properly."

"But it's still all hydraulic?"

"Yes. We need to replace those somehow. Hydraulics are too vulnerable to even light guns or pistols."

"Electro-mechanical joints?"

"Yes, at least we hope we can do that successfully. It'll be more expensive."

"But a lot more reliable, yes?"

"Yes, though it may wear down more quickly if we don't to it right."

"Hm. Do you think a hybrid of those two methods is possible?"

"Not sure. We'll have to try that out. If it works, it'll either be incredibly awesome and solve all out problems there, or it's such a !@#$%^& child that it won't work at all, or only badly."

"Mhm..How much did it cost until now?"

"Just the legs? Almost 150 million. With the body and possibly even arms, and a proper 'head', a single of these walkers could exceed 500 million in cost, before mass-production at least."

"Jesus. That's a lot of money."

"Yeah. And we have to test them."

"Field tests? Oh lord, that'll be a massacre."

"Luckily, it's a long time before we have to do that."

"Then again, it's only a matter of time until we're ready to do them. And we can't delay anything because it would get noticed."

"Gee. I guess we can already say goodbye to those millions of research budget."

"Billions if we build three or more of these things before a mass-production facility can be built."

"Just insane how much they're willing to put into this project."

"True. But it's not our money. Our job is just to make it work. Somehow."

"And report to them if it doesn't work...Hooray.."

"Mhm."

*All classified, of course*

Subject: PHASR Rifle
Status: Research ongoing
Description: Effective in distracting enemies and temporatily blinding them. Research has resulted in more potent blinding, permanent by now. Plans are to turn it into an effective infantry-carried laser weapon. More powerful batteries are required, as well as more efficient focusing. An effective range of less than 600 meters is expected.

Subject: OTH Radar
Status: Completed
Description: Has a range 5,000 kilometers, with a sensitivity where even the smallest planes and missiles can be detected. Has anti-stealth capabilities, counters are being developed.

Subject: EMP proofing
Status: Ongoing
Description: Simple, efficient defense against EMP strikes. Expensive initially, but worth it in the long run. Roughly 90% completed.

Subject: Carbon nanotubes
Status: Ongoing
Description: Implementation into every possible application still ongoing. Infantry armour uses it as standard. Layers are being included in tank and ship armour to increase strength against attacks, even if the effect seems to be only marginally, it serves partially to make them stealthier. Is also used to vastly strengthen Railguns, making them much more efficient.

Subject: Stealth in Airplanes
Status: Ongoing
Description: Measures to improve stealth even more while preventing the 'empty hole' effect have been researched and are being installed in the appropriate planes. Doesn't work perfectly, but the result still is much more efficient stealthing of all such planes. Plasma stealth discarded as useless due to extreme heat-signature.

Subject: Leopard 3A-L
Status: Ongoing
Description: The design has some problems, but will potentially be capable of fielding a laser with up to 8 kilometers effective range, using both chemical reactions and powerful Wankel engines to supply energy. It will require up to three times the power output of the current Leopard 3A1. Use of carbon nanotubes to help focusing the lasers better somehow proved to be successful, by implementing them into the mechanism.
Research indicates 18% completion of the project.

th_T-172.jpg

Subject: Sonic tank
Status: Ongoing
Description: Unlikely to be of great use other than irritating the enemy. Sound waves are not potent enough in air, though they can be of use under water, possibly for anti-submarine warfare. Some will be built anyways, because they will likely raise morale. One prototype has been finished. Usefulness to be determined.

th_1219420002000.jpg

th_121948234389.jpg

Subject: Railguns
Status: Finished
Description: Numerous problems have been taken care of, such as friction and powering issues. Fusion power results in much more energy able to be supplied, tests for larger 'calibres' have been done. 8 kg slugs can be propelled at 4,500 m/s, up to 1,200 kilometers far, with accuracy rapidly dropping after 700 kilometers. Further improvements in energy supply are currently not feasible. It is suggested that the range be restricted to 650 or so kilometers due to concerns for accuracy. We do not want to hit a hospital when 50 meters away there are enemy tanks.

Subject: Microwave "guns"
Status: Finished
Description: 35 GHz weapons with a wave length of around a millimeter, range of up to 10 kilometers. Delivers incredible EMP radiation, frying any electronics, even with EMP hardening. It just burns through. Purely ballistic weaponry and dumb weapons will have to be utilized as counters, should an enemy develop these. Potential of frying enemy soldiers is there, but likely more suitable to just killing planes and missiles.
They are used on ships, for AA and the SDI.

Subject: Super/Quantum computers
Status: Finished
Description: One model has been finished. Two more are close to finishing, one in each mountain fortress. They will serve as backup-locations for the Chairman in case the Großglockner bunker is compromised.
Nuclear warheads in case of enemies gaining access to the supercomputer are installed and will be detonated on command by the Chairman.

Subject: Genetic Manipulation
Status: Ongoing
Description: 325 test subjects. 149 with noticable mutations. 53 dead. 187 diagnosed with cancer or another lethal disease. 9 fully healthy. 114 mentally retarded. Research ongoing, no end in sight. Will replace normal recruits in Amber Guard once possible.

Subject: Space Shuttles
Status: Finished
Description: 8 Endeavour shuttles in service, 3 Pegasus shuttles. No problems in sight.

th_The_Next_Endeavour_by_JamieTakahash.jpg

th_Pegasus_by_bagera3005.png

Subject: Space Station
Status: Ongoing
Description: Construction has started. Central dock is completed, everything else to be done. Slow progress, may require help from other nations to be finished more quickly. 9% completion, will go on much faster once the LaunchLoop is done.

th_spacestation5.jpg

Subject: Sol Exploration Vessel (SEV)
Status: Ongoing
Description: Almost everything done. Only needs to be built, construction will begin once the Space Station is finished. Not that on the current design, there still are old flags and names. Will be renamed to reflect new nationality.

"Greetings, Ladies and Gentlemen.

It is my pleasure to announce to you that construction on a German Democratic space station has begun.

th_spacestation5.jpg

Currently, only the central dock is completed, due to most of the Space Program's resources going to build the launch loop in South America. According to the government, construction will go at a much faster pace once the loop is finished, up to 10 times as fast, depending on how much of the capacity is used solely for building the station, which is in a near-geosynchronous orbit.

According to internal sources, there are no plans at the time to send a mission to the Moon or to another planet in the solar system, though there have been hints that such an expedition may be done within the next years, following nations such as Viniland.

We will of course keep you updated on anything else happening.

Thank you and good night."

*Classified, deep in the underground bunker*

"How do you feel?"

". . ."

"You do hear me, yes?"

A nod.

"Then why don't you reply?"

". . ."

"You should know that I know that you do have the ability to speak."

". . . . . . so?"

"What, 'so'? Why don't you answer if you can talk?"

"Maybe I don't want to." It was a monotone voice, all emotion gone, ripped out of her mind and replaced violently with something...strange, artificial.

"What you want and don't want is not relevant, miss. You're property. Nobody's going to look for you."

"I know."

"Then answer the questions." He sounded agitated.

"But I'm only going to answer new ones. You ask the same questions every day."

"Only at the beginning of each session. You know that very well."

"Do I? You say I have a problem remembering things."

"No, no, no! Do I have to explain that every single time?"

"Yes."

"Urgh. No, I don't. You do what I say." His voice rose.

"Why should I?" Hers was still completely monotone.

"Because it won't end well for you if you don't."

Unfortunately for the doctor, she wasn't restrained in any way. Thus, as he had turned his back to her, ranting some more about what would happen, he did not notice how she got up from the couch without any sound. Because she wore socks but no shoes, he did not her her walking up to him, either.

However, the security camera caught that on tape.

The doctor did not notice how she rose her arms. What he did notice was a right arm wrapping around his neck with inhuman speed. He did notice the rising pressure on his windpipe and how he couldn't breathe anymore.

She looked frail in the sterile light of the room, yet overwhelmed the man with unexpected ease. He struggled and wanted to scream, feeling the pressure on trachea slowly beginning to crush it. He wanted to escape, somehow, ram his fist with a satisfying crunch into her emotionless face. But he weakened, his strength lessened. As his vision faded and he begun to fall unconscious, his last thoughts were that she still hadn't answered any of his questions in the last weeks and months.

When he finally was limp, she jerked his head around and a sickening crunch filled the room just moments after the door had opened and while several Amber Guard ran in, some flinching at the sound, knowing quite well what it meant.

She didn't resist as they took her away. Nobody would scold her, and the man would simply be cremated. He would never be missed and nobody would come looking for him. His wants did not matter anymore. He now was property. They were equal.

A casualty of the Ultor complex. One of many.

OOC: Ok...

I loved the above post. It illustrates perfectly the dark (as well as mildly bureaucratic :P) nature of the research that goes on in that facility.
