The following speech was given in Nordreich's Volksrepublik on this day, Friday the Fifth of June, Two-Thousand-and-Nine. It is posted here in order to provide members of the international community with an update regarding Nordreich's activities.

Thirty Days Mit Nordreich

Esteemed Triumvirs, Ministers and Deputy Ministers, Officers and Non-Commissioned Officers, Signal Korps volunteers, Members of Nordreich!

It is difficult to know where to begin.

When I returned to Planet Bob on April 18, a Great War loomed on the horizon and Nordreich was but a twinkle in the eyes of its (re)founders.

Thirty days ago this alliance was formally re-founded. With a couple of dozen founders and a combined NS in the thousands (not even tens of thousands!) we boldly declared our determination to reclaim our heritage and our community.

It was a risk. Of this I think there can be no argument.

OUR FOREIGN RELATIONS

On that very first night, no one was more surprised than I when the first alliance to pop by for a friendly visit was the Federation of Armed Nations. Since the 'Overlord Incident' of two years ago, relations between our communities have been strained. And yet we have also gained increasing respect for each other, perhaps because at the end of the day we were abandoned by largely the same set of fair-weather friends. Or, perhaps, it was because we saw in each other a level of determination we found admirable.

FAN 'hunkered in the bunker' for nearly two years, while we went our separate ways but stayed in touch with each other. In both cases, our communities survived intact. Few alliances could manage this, and it speaks to our character.

Our relations with FAN continue to improve. I maintain a permanent presence in their IRC channel -- when I'm online, anyway -- and high-level discussions between our alliances are ongoing.

No, we have not 'signed anything' with them yet, but I hardly think that matters. I don't need a piece of paper to tell me who my friends are.

However, sometimes a piece of paper is a handy thing to have. This is why we signed a business arrangement with our old friends in Nueva Vida. We sell them our tech, they extend their protection. But again, as my conversations with the current and former Emperors of NV confirm, it is only paper. Friendships don't require a signature on the dotted line.

Our relations with our 'traditional adversaries' in the International and the Libertarian Socialist Federation got off to an interesting start almost from the very beginning.

No sooner had we started up than the old accusations began flying from all directions, including ours. I resolved to get to the bottom of it, and the result was last night's announcement on the main forum.

While I am pleased to have partially resolved this matter, I cannot say I am happy about it. Both Nordreich and the International learned that long-time members were traitors. In the case of Nordreich we learned that someone we had loved and trusted for more than two years turned on us for the most petty reasons imaginable. While it is always better to know the truth, I take no pleasure from it. I suspect many in the International are feeling the same way with regard to their member who was involved in all of this.

Make no mistake, though. While we have won this round against those who would try to trick us into war, the fight is not over. Some attitudes are as persistent as $@roaches or herpes. Furthermore, regardless of what we as an alliance do, there will always be those who dislike us simply by virtue of our AA. One cannot reason with these people. They are as intransigent as Scientologists, Objectivists or Mac users.

The best we can do is remain open and honest in our dealings with all alliances and hope that attitudes change over time.

INTERNAL MATTERS

I would now like to turn briefly to the internal workings of this alliance.

I have been extremely pleased at how we've whipped ourselves into shape. We have come together with a minimum of confusion. The level of cooperation between alliance members is simply amazing.

Our military is up and running. Our bank programs have started. An Academy proposal has been accepted and approved.

Exciting times, indeed.

In all 'internal' fields we are doing very well, with the sole exception of recruiting. Our recruiting efforts got off to a poor start, as many of you know. I decided to shut down that activity for the time being, focusing on more critical matters.

The Triumvirs and I are now prepared to re-open that Ministry and are actively looking for a new Minister of Recruitment. Interested persons are invited to apply in our public government areas. I would remind everyone that final approval for any government position rests with the Triumvirate, not me. So, while I'm flattered by all lobbying efforts, they are misdirected.

MY PLANS

Our international position has compelled me to focus on external matters far too much over the past month. There are important internal projects to work on.

One project I am committed to resolving by the end of this month is our Charter.

Don't get me wrong. Our Charter is a wonderful document 'as is'. In reading it over, however, the Triumvirs and I realized that there was potential for a bloated middle level of careerists and bureaucrats. (I'm not pointing fingers, by the way. I'm merely saying the possibility was there.) Our goal is to streamline this government's operations while at the same time distributing greater authority among government members, Ministers and so on.

I would make a poor dictator, as I have no desire to micro-manage this alliance. I trust the people we have in place to do their very best, and I hope they know that they may turn to me for advice and support at any time.

Senior members of this alliance are currently discussing and debating several alternate versions of various Charter Sections. While I am very much involved in this discussion, mine is but one voice among many.

Members who wish to see particular matters addressed in our new Charter are invited to make use of the Volksrepublik and let their government know their opinions. While Nordreich is not a democracy, we nevertheless have an obligaiton to listen to members' legitimate concerns.

Right about now would be the appropriate point to single out individuals who have performed admirably since our reformation. The problem is that doing so would require me to list damn-near evryone in the alliance, so bear with me as I save more specific acknowledgements for a later address to the membership.

CLOSING REMARKS

When active planning for Nordreich's return began, I had no intention or even desire to serve as one of Nordreich's first Triumvirs, as the first Minister of Foreign Affairs or, indeed, as your first Kaiser.

I have approached each position with humility, aware of my own particular skills but at the same time keenly aware of my own limitations. I thank you for the support and encouragement you have given me.

I cannot help but be aware of the tremendous responsibility placed on my shoulders. I appreciate the trust you have placed in me, and I shall do my very best not to let you down.

My friends, the time has flown. The headaches have been relatively few, and our growth has been phenomenal.

We continue to have the eyes of the Cyberverse upon on us. However, I would like to speak for a moment about those whose opinion matters most: the Nordreich 'Diaspora'.

Right now there are literally hundreds of former members of Nordreich, Norden Verein, SoM and other '!@#$%^& children' of this alliance who are anxiously watching events as they unfold with regard to NoR and its future.

Many of them have contacted me, saying they would like to join. However, they are concerned that old patterns will repeat and that Nordreich will once again vanish in a cloud of recriminations, betrayal and destruction.

I can't say I blame them. I would be concerned as well were I in their shoes. But I believe we have the power to ease their concerns so that many of them, at least, will come home again.

These people are our Brothers and Sisters. We belong together and I believe we will unite and surpass Nordreich's former greatness.

Perhaps this seems like a pipe dream to you, but consider for a moment that we have not engaged in any kind of organized recruiting whatsoever since the re-founding of this alliance. And yet, here we are with nearly 100 members and a combined strength of almost 1.5 million NS.

If our lost brothers came home right now, those numbers would easily quadruple.

Our lost comrades want to come home. It is our job to ensure there will be a home to return to.

So for now, let us worry about building this great alliance. Let us focus on the internal matters that need to get done. Let us continue to be willing to extend a hand in friendship to any alliance willing to do the same.

If we can do these things, our future will be bright indeed.

This is the challenge we face.

Let us meet it together.

Hail Nordreich!

Hopefully relations between our two alliances do not escalate to the levels it were before the Great War, you were the most level headed in the NoR and NoV governments alongside einswald, his departure is a loss, whatever alliance he was in.

I didn't think I would say this, good luck ... ??? :awesome:

Today is the day of the green herb. A day stoners in the Xantenian Federation of Communes celebrate by smoking loads and getting well high. I'm high as $%&@.

What a good read. Definitely a concern for former Nordreich members that want to join but do fear a repeat. I wish you all the luck in the world that you guys keep your house in order and that it may open the door for any former members that are still skeptical to join.

By the way, I'd also like to send a big thank you to all of Nueva Vida's allies who supported us when we kicked off our relationship with Nordreich.

To all the naysayers who'd like to still see Nordreich fall... smug.gif
