OOC: Something I hashed together as a teaser for later lore on the NoN, also something i made for one of Sumeragis threads that i thought was awesome

The Executive Minister, holder of said title title and current ruler of the Nation of Nod

Not much can be said about the man known only by his title - no accurate accounts of his past and history before his rise to power can be found.

All that is known is that he has steered the NoN away from Kane's fanatical teachings - surprising, considering that he was a former member of Kane's Inner Circle - perhaps he was privy to information disturbing enough to cause his departure from Kane's flock?

It is rumoured that The EM was a former member of the military - although approximately 80 percent of the NoN's male population enlist in some standard combat or non combat roles in the military, most people in an executive position have descended from Elite Cadre training (highly specialized) only available to the most proficient in combat - hardly the shape any politician could reach and maintain.

Further more, the EM wears a standard Heavy Infantry Helm and faceplate, not the coveted ElCad Cranical Protection Suite (CPS).

Also, it is odd that the EM never shows his face, and has never disclosed a real name (which is odd for a sole ruler of a dictatorship...most relish power and have their visage displayed for all their nation to see).

More radical speculation suggests the identity of the EM to be either cyborg, Kane himself, or a mulitude of people - the latter two holding the most clout within the conspirators since the EM has 'lived' and held a positon longer and with more stability than any one General or Warlord of the Brotherhood of Nod.

Whatever the case is, the EM is devoutly followed, as he has guided the NoN to increased economic, social and military stability.

OOC: I like it...but I do have to tell you, you're not the first to use a leader who hides behind a mask. I was first... :P

Haaaa i applaud you for not accusing me of ripping you and failing or not being original, its like the simpsons, lol someones already done it...

On the other hand, what does your leader look like? See, i guess a problem I have is that i dont really look at other peoples RP's so what i think is original may not be

OOC: I have no problem. If you didn't possess the knowledge I'd done it, then it was original to you, and that's what matters. Mine simply hides behind a Bowler hat, a pair of sunglasses, and a simple black cloth tied over his face.

Though I've done a number of character Rp's with his secret identity, so at least the reader audience knows who he is. :)

OOC: Ok finally i will continue with John Michaelson's epic - a story that stretches from the NoN's pre-split-with-the-BoN days to the defining battle of Addis ababa.

This comes after long hours staring at my monitor, waiting for the writers block to end.

IC:

...It had been several months after my one man coup attempt on Sgt. Konig. He had surprisingly made me Cell Leader which basically meant I was his right hand man when it came to this group of militant recruits.

I hated being Cell Leader. Not only did it prevent me from the normal, down to earth life that i wanted, free of favourable treatment, but I was also doing what my father wanted me to - leading Nod - in some way. I always tried my best to be one of the guys...

"Today we will be seperating the boys from the men!" Sgt. Konig said one day at the front of the troop, "We will begin what we like to call... Personnel Evaluation and Training or PET. All of you will from now on be trainees, or PETs!". None of us knew what this bizarre announcement held in store for us, but we later learned the Brotherhood's cruel strategy - The more a trainee is desensitized to violence, pain, killing and death, the more a trainee is humiliated, punished and scorned by his superiors, the more his very humanity is called into question - often bizarrely and using the aforementioned, the better...

The objective of the PET was to suppress the individual's humanity and compassion - however strong a character he may have possessed - and to fashion each of us into a soldier that fit the standards of a Nod Militant - an individual with nothing to lose, and everything to gain - cold, calculated murderer while simultaneously regaining a sense of morals.

Two fundamental questions followed however; One, what stops a PET graduate from suddenly turning on his superiors? Two, what causes the graduate to not descend into madness and uncontrollable disregard for his and others safety?

The first was simple - make commanding officers seem like 'one of the guys', build a sense of 'its us versus the world' between the group leader and the men under his direct control. The Nation of Nod started early in differing from other Brotherhood Chapters by solving the one problem other BoN militias had.

The second was intrinsically more complicated to remedy. First, the NoN tried a system that is still in place today - the 'Combat Performance Compensation Program' where militants are rewarded for kills and other combat duties, be it with money, women, or extra provisions for the militant's families. It was encouraged for militants to choose the later compensation, but most, if not all militants at that time developed a sense of disdain for families being a sign of weakness - others hating them for forcing them to enlist in the first place!

The NoN finally came with a solution - each militant was allowed to have one beacon of hope amidst all the hardships of combat service - their loved ones. Thus, throughout the course of training, militants would be able to be in touch with loved ones via telecommunicatons, strengthening frayed bonds and giving trainee's and militants hope - many service men 'held on' in spite of the gruelling suffering they encounted, if only to see their loved ones again - My 'beacon' ended up being Ashley, and it worked...damn those higher ups for their cruel manipulations...

In the end the trainee would become the NoN's favored warhorse, Heavy Infantry militant, Heavy denoting armour, not armament, and if deemed worthy would enter Elite Cadre training. In any case, the individual emerged with a pent up fury and almost fervent desire to see combat, for there he can begin to work off his anger on his own subordinates, or better still on the enemies of the NoN...

The ability to rise through the ranks through military service was a stop gap measure - in case a recruit was not born into a fortunate family or did not display any outstanding merit in the education facilities but was still willing and able to survive ElCad training, he would first undergo basic training to become fully combat certified, with all the tactics, doctrines, a basic PET, marksmanship and weapons familiarity to gain Light Infantry status (again, comparatively the armour). This was where most recruits ended up, and as such, the Light Infantry were the faithful workhorse of the NoN, although not as favoured as the 'Higher' classes of Nod Militancy.

He would then forgo his Light Infantry status if wished and commence advanced combat training, where he was subject to intense and brutal conditioning which included both physical and mental punishment (the advanced PET we were taking), be given the advanced Nod Combat Armour-Carapace system, a head to toe package that, while based on the standard infantry plating, was superior to it in every way, as well as the Heavy Infantry Helm and faceplate, a highly sophisticated combat suite rolled up into a highly bullet resistant package. He would again forgo his Heavy Infantry status if desired and go on to Elite Cadre where he would rightfully belong - apparently it was this gap that allowed my father to advance in rankings and become a General...

...Today we had to do physical training, a long, non stop trek through the Ethiopian wilderness at night. The ones who made it would be lavished by extra accomodations, while those who fell behind were punished or left out in the wild.

"Ok you dogs, go out and run!" Sgt Konig barked "I want to see everyone at the rendez-vouz in oh ten-hundred! Weakness will NOT be tolerated!" With that, each cell started their trek, the clanking of boots and metal plates sounded throughout our training facility, drowning out various shouts and noises from other enlistees in the facility, most below our level of training, as newer recruits had joined our troop a couple months earlier.

I glazed nostalgic over the fact that about a year earlier I was one of those trainees when I remembered where I was and what I was supposed to be doing..."Everyone to me! To me! We stay as one and no one gets left behind!" I cried out, trying to be a beacon of sanity amidst all the reckless abandonment other cell leaders had for their subordinates, but only my cell mates stayed with me, other members of other cells and their leaders started to run at a fast pace, leaving the slower members behind...

It was several hours into our march - the landscape was a blasted hellhole of a battlefield - the remains of many small tribal wars and skirmishes with the Brotherhood and its enemies were evident in the hills and surrounding areas - when we came across a couple recruits from other cells, passed out due to the sheer weight of their equipment, and the long trek.

"Hey what should we do?" Kevin came up beside me at the head of the pack, "I don't think they can last out here, and some of the bigger game will start being active soon".

I thought to myself... we can't just leave them here! But I also did not want the men under my command to be punished for my decision, as our large, safe, coordinated group was also a slow and cumbersome one.

"Ok here's what we do: we take off all their heavy equipment and distribute it evenly amongst the cell to carry, then I will carry one of these men... I need one volunteer".

Everyone looked at each other, obviously not wanting the added weight of a trooper on him. I repeated myself "Come on! I need one volunteer! If no one man's up I'm going to order someone to do it! We are not leaving these guys out here to rot!"

A tall armour-clad trooper stood forward. It was Oshibutu, a native Ethiopian enlistee. He was always quiet, and seemed to always avoid unneeded slaughter and other revelry the Brotherhood encouraged.

"I will carry him" was the only thing he said, and with that him and I performed a fireman's lift-and-carry on each of our respected burdens and soon my cell marched on...

We marched on picking up several others as we went by. Eventually the supposed time of our arrival was drawing near and we were still an hour or so behind.

"I wonder whats going to happen to us now..." a couple recruits worried, "I hear they still have lashings..." - "what, isn't it 10 for failures or something?"

"If any one will be taking anything, it will be me" I said, overhearing them "I was the one who ordered you guys to do this, so i am responsible". Of course, I didn't truly know this, but I said it anyways to keep morale up in my cell mates and the others who we brought with us. I was absolutely terrified of public lashings, as I had the displeasure of watching several in the past...

[...]

We were several hours late, but we finally made it back to the rendez-vouz site, loaded with our gear and the people we took with us. All of the surviving trainees who made it before the designated time looked already fed, bathed and smug at their success. Several of my men looked like they were beginning to pass out, many more were panting and we all smelled of sweat, smoke and dirt.

Konig looked over from the table he was sitting at, a piece of cheese cake still on his plate; I looked at it and the empty dishes all around the tables and noticed that I was starving, my feet hurt and I couldn't feel my shoulder. Konig got up after looking me up and down, and at the unconscious recruits several of my men had on their shoulders then looked back at me. Without our gazes breaking, he got up and walked over to us...

"Sgt Konig sir! Reporting for duty sir!" I said, and snapped to, giving an awkward salute at the front of my group, with the trooper still on my other shoulder. The other cell mates did the same, some having to drop their men on the floor, like a sick offering to Konig for clemency.

"You people are 2 HOURS LATE!!! DISGUSTING!", he spat on the floor and started pacing back and forth in front of my group. "What's this? You carried others with you?! What an utter disgrace!!!! You are people are weak! Compassion is for the weak, your enemy deserves no mercy! Those men were your enemies! Vying for YOUR prize!!!"

"YOU!" he said, turning around and pointing at me, "Who's idea was this? Why did you allow such discord amongst your ranks?!?".

I instantly felt a million eyes piercing my back...

"Sir! It was my decision sir! Its my belief that the Brotherhood needs all the fighting men it can get, Sir!" I said, trying to hide the terror in my voice.

"Well then you will get the 10 lashes all on your own then!" Konig roared. "I have half a mind to make it 20, 10 for allowing this insubordination to occur, and another 10 for your stupid idea! You're lucky that we'll be doing advanced conditioning tomorrow, and no one in your cell is fit for command!"

I felt instantly grateful that I would be recieving only 10 lashes, but still wondered about my men... "Sir, thank you sir! But what of my men sir?"

"Your men will be fed and bathed, while you will be forced to watch!" the words stung me, but I decided not to object, "You are incredibly lucky they are still yours! And as for thanking me...you won't be in a couple of hours!"

At this several of my men stepped forwards, followed briefly by some stunned stares from the others, then the rest stepped around me, "Please sir! Michaelson kept us in formation the entire time! It was because of him that we survived!"

"I DID NOT SAY AT EASE YOU MONGRELS! GET BACK TO THOSE SALUTES OR I WILL PERSONALLY HAVE YOUR GONADS ROASTING ON SPITS OVER A FIRE!!!", Konig bellowed.

Everyone jumped back to attention, and Konig turned to me, I never budged... "You think you're Soldiers huh? Think your smart eh?" he said, jutting his chin out as he stepped infront of me.

Nose to nose, he continued, "Look at you, you're just a bunch of kids. Nothing but a bunch of Lost Boys."

"Because of your obvious failure to keep your cell in line, you will recieve an additional 5 lashes! As for the rest of you, get to the observation decks at once! You will be going to bed hungry for your insubordination!"

[...]

I was led to the center of the main combat platform, where we usually trained our hand-to-hand skills on 'living training aids' - captured enemy militants or other 'undesirables'. The Brotherhood wanted to give us a taste for blood early - which was evident from all the stains on the floor - our superiors deemed it necessary for live targets to be used, as they are infinitely more realistic than ballistic gel dummies or sparring partners...

I was led to an arch at one end of the platform and ordered at gun point to raise my arms above my head...

My mind began to race; Was I about to die? Perhaps they reconsidered my punishment and sentenced me to an execution. I raised my head and hands defiantly, looking up into the observation decks where I saw all the other recruits throughout the facility gathered with their instructors to witness my punishment - I thought I saw my old combat history teacher up there.

"Lashing is a method of punishment well suited to our needs!" Konig announced, "It leaves no permanent physical scars, which would hinder this militant's service to the Brotherhood! Lets hope it turns this failure into something the Brotherhood can use!" With that, Konig and another of my escorts promptly removed my vest and shirt, cuffed my wrists to my arch and then stepped back to stand at attention and face me.

An older man with a thick moustache and Russian accent, came up to me and placed a stilletto between my teeth, it was Romano, the kindly old weapons smith. "Bite", was all he said, then stepped off the platform.

My gaze followed him, I momentarily forgot about what was about to happen to me and started wondering what such a kind man could be doing within the harsh confines of Nod's Militia. This momentary absence of mind was fortunate, as the first lash came down on my back, opening a vicious wound.

My body jerked forward, pain shooting throughout my torso - the whip had been dipped in NX-27, a fast acting and non lethal neuro-toxin that amplified the feeling of pain while fortifying the nervous system. The result was a person who could feel an amplified pain due to increased sensitivity, and not be subject to merciful loss of consciousness from it.

As lash after lash came down, I looked up into the white hot light that was illuminating the darkened room and the platform...I could feel blood dripping down my back, satiating the platforms hunger for additional stains. My mind turned to Ashley and I pictured her face in the light, "I'm going to need more than princess band-aids after this Ash..." I said to myself. It gave me a sense of ironic comfort, like an anchor in a violent sea....

OOC: I wanted to start RPing some of the NoN's military hardware for two reasons, one I was getting bored writing John Michaelson's Epic, and two I have a severe case of writers block :S

Here ill start to RP one of many military articles, An introduction to the NoN's Mechanized forces

IC:

An excerpt from "The Great Divide: The Differences Between BoN and NoN Armour and Military Doctrines"

Since the dawn of the 19th Century, Mechanized Forces have played a great part in a nation's abilities to successfully defend itself from a threat or impose its will on the battlefield. It has been shown in the past that a nation that can successfully out-produce and field a greater number of mechanized units will eventually prevail.

Here, in the XXth Century, not much has changed...Nations still field large amounts of armoured forces, with only the makes, models, and features changing - a normal aspect of our ever changing technolocial prowess.

...however, a significant change to armoured warfare is the tactics employed by tanks and their commanders - there has been a steady decline in battles where huge open fields are filled with billowing smoke, blasting cannons and rolling battle lines, with whole regiments of tracked fighting vehicles fighting one another over the remains of their fallen bretheren...

...it is increasing proven that in order to succeed in a military conflict a mutually supported combined arms (armor backed by mechanized infantry) tactical element is required achieve objectives while keeping casualties to a minimum.

...previously the Brotherhood of Nod was a mix of masses of poorly trained militiamen that fought beside and were led by highly trained, heavily-armed and armoured, sophisticated and disciplined technology-backed guerrilla fighters. Huge waves of men brandishing AK 47's, obsolete armour vests, RPG 7s and other 'crude' war materiel were often at the beck-and-call of the elite super-soldiers of Nod.

...indeed, this was even reflected in the Brotherhood's mechanized forces...hordes of Bradley M2's outfitted with ad-hoc 75mm APDS cannons rolled into battle; and while their up-armoured chassis and cannons were indeed outclassed by heavier enemy MBTs, they were cheaper to produce, quicker to field and even faster during combat, which served the Brotherhood's tactics of the time.

These 'meat-shields' would often try flanking the enemy, as they would fair badly against a face-to-face confrontation with enemy tanks. If this was not successful, then they would be backed by more advanced vehicles; Older Russian-made heavy tanks, and strange technologically advanced war-machines that provided the real firepower, while the Bradleys would provide little more than a distraction...

250px-Light_Tanks.jpg

Brave Bradley operators often rushed in formation like this, only to have their faithful war cries silenced by enemy cannon fire...

...here was one of the many places the Nation of Nod differed from its parent...like a rebellious teenager, the NoN relied on tactics that shunned such heavy losses as 'unacceptable' and quickly made a name for itself within the war rooms of Nod.

The NoN relied on advanced tactics and equipment being supplied to ALL of its forces, not just a limited few...this was justified by its ruler with the obvious fewer number of military personnel and citizens available to the NoN, compared to the vast war-torn nations and cities the Brotherhood recruited their fodder from. The NoN could not afford to throw away lives and equipment so readily, as there was not as much that could be brought to replace them...

OOC: Here is the specs and background on the NoN Light Tank/IFV

IC:

An excerpt from "The Great Divide: The Differences Between BoN and NoN Armour and Military Doctrines"

...as large scale tank battles took a less frequent and significant role in armed conflict, the Brotherhood and the NoN took an increased interest in CQC and Urban warfare...

...It was in these unique battlefields, where fighting resulted in a rapidly decentralized battle front; Light and Heavy Infantry forces would be subjected to hostile fire - often from sources difficult to locate amidst the chaos... Even if these often carefully hidden and sometimes well protected positions were located, only the heaviest crew served weapons - often the first targets of enemy fire - would be a sufficient counter. Attempts to evade or take cover in these built up hotspots often led to difficulties in identifying friend from foe, militant or civilian. In these highly charged situations the danger of fratricide became more and more apparent...

...however, the NoN hoped to counter these inferiorities by designing a highly specialized tank - one that was small enough to traverse city streets and alleys, fast enough to evade heavy enemy fire and maneuver through the many obstacles present in urban combat, equipped with structure silencing weapons...

Normal Heavy Tanks were unsuitable for this, since they would easily become vulnerable to urban combat's lack of a 'frontline'...often shots came at their sides from narrow alleys, or above from the rooftops or a city's many windows...

It was in this quagmire that the NDII Chaperone was born.

LighttankmkI203mmhow.jpg

The NDII Chaperone was a compact, fast and heavily armed Light Tank/IFV that excelled in Urban Warfare, shown here with 203mm Howitzer

The Chaperone was fast, compact and boasted a huge firepower for its small size...the standard layout was a 203 mm howitzer, no longer used to fire an artillery barrage, this ad hoc behemoth fired devastating HESH rounds at structures and surprisingly effective HEPP rounds at tanks...

The philosophy behind the HESH rounds was that the 'High Explosive Squash Head' of the round would impact the structure inside or outside, releasing a potent explosive on the surface, which would be squashed against it. A millisecond later the payload would be detonated, causing enormous structural integrity loss, explosive concussion-blast wave, shrapnel and fragmentation within the building, and overall failure of enemy bunkers.

The HEPP (High Explosive Penetrator Package) rounds on the other hand contained a normal Anti-tank Explosive Penetrator located in the front of the head of a modified HESH round. The Explosive from the HESH would spread over the penetrator as the round impacted, explode to activate any ERA, and propel the penetrator through the enemy armour where it would detonate.

These rounds coupled with a phenomenal turret traverse and elevation speed meant a lot of hurt could be brought to bear on an enemy in short notice.

The only draw back of the 203 mm gun was the huge drop in altitude over straight distances - the gun was short range. However other methods employed by the Brotherhood expanded the Chaperone's duties outside of its Urban warfare roots...

Compact120mmgunsystem.jpg

The NDII Compact 120mm Gun System, Long Ranged Armament of the Chaperone

The C120GS was a standard 120mm Cannon, seen on numerous enemy MBTs, miniturized on a phenomenal level... It was capable of accepting all standard 120 mm rounds, while weighing and taking as much room as a 105 mm system! The C120GS had low vehicle response (felt recoil on crew) due to a muzzle break and extended recoiling barrel.

NoNLightTankw120mmcannon.jpg

The NDII Chaperone just outside of Lideta Army Complex seen with the C120GS

The Chaperone still had drawbacks however - crew complaints of confined and almost claustrophobic quarters are a prevalent concern even today.

The Chaperone was given a 120 mm gun to defend itself at long range from enemy MBTs but it was still a light tank - a direct hit from a dedicated anti tank cannon round or an advanced anti tank shoulder launched round would often disable Chaperones.

In spite of these unavoidable flaws, the Chaperone continues to roll down streets, smash enemy positions and support its heavier bretheren...it has earned its place as a well equipped and designed combatant in the Nation of Nod's mechanized divisions...

OOC: A look at the standard weapon of the infantry forces of the NoN the NMI Ripper 7.62 Automatic Battle Rifle, a domestically produced and maintained weapon. Don't let its appearances or cartridge dimensions fools you, this is not a Squad Automatic Weapon...think of it as the love child of the AK47 and FN P90...

IC:

Excerpt from "The Technology of Peace: Nod Military Industries (NMI)"

...While common weapons like the M-16 and AKM series (most notably the AK-103) have served the Brotherhood and its militias well for years as the standard service rifle, the Ethiopian branch of the Brotherhood has put its faith in us, Nod Military Industries (NMI) to develop a newer, standardized workhorse for the Nation of Nod...

...qualities such as short-to-medium range stopping power, rate of fire, modular design and durability have been emphasised in this project and NMI has complied with the NMI Ripper Automatic Rifle.

29822.jpg

The 'Ripper' is an aptly named AR designed to unleash a lethal deluge of 7.62 x 54 rounds

...The Ripper focuses on raw power - able to unleash 840 7.62 x 54 rounds per minute - this AR is designed to allow an individual soldier to fire controlled bursts of dozens of rounds at medium-ranged targets, perforate individuals up close with its armour piercing capabilities and provide covering fire for advancing Nod troops.

The Ripper uses 7.62x54mm Armor Piercing, Full Metal Jacket Rounds, usually jacketed in materials such as tungsten, steel, titanium or some other carbide to accentuate the round's armour penetration. NMI supports integration with neighbouring allies and thus, the Ripper can accept any and all standard and non-standard rounds currently in the 7.62 x 54 mm cartridge size. The Ripper can also be modified to fire the common 7.62 x 51 mm rounds as well.

...certain units like the Elite Cadre and Heavy Infantry can opt for increased magnesium counts in each individual bullet for intimidation purposes - greater magnesium equals an extremely large muzzle flash when firing. Each individual round is extremely likely to overpenetrate the target, which is intended...this lethal mix of high calibre bullets and an equally high rate of fire gives the Ripper its name. Soldiers report feeling 'like Death itself', watching their enemies' bodies come apart under a hail of fire from their Rippers. This weapon unquestioningly allows Nod Militants to easily counter opposing infantry and, with the right ammunition, light vehicles!

...the modular design concept of the Ripper allows for the attachments of accessories up to and including Picatinny Rails, ambidextrous operation tools, suppressors, silencers, reflex sights, laser designators and various hardpoints for bayonet attachments.

The Ripper also allows for an underslung 40 mm Grenade Launcher (a Brotherhood standard). Stock features include a detachable muzzle break/flash amplifier for recoil reduction and intimidation purposes, integrated barrel shroud containing a liquid nitrogen helix for the vast amounts of cooling required by the weapon's cycle speed, ironsights and Digital Ammunition Display (DAD) - The Ripper houses an on board electronics suite, showing ammo capacity, a compass and other information without the use of a HUD, although upcoming developments at NMI will definitely use the 'backdoors' left by developers for future development and the inherent abilities of the current Nod Combat Armour-Carapace system to create a fully integrated, militia-wide battle net...

...due to the its impact resistant design, the Ripper can be used as a crude-yet-effective bludgeoning tool in emergencies, its fully sealed external shrouding protects it from water, sand and blood which allows the weapon to be used in a variety of environments - the cold desolate wastelands of the polar regions, the dry deserts of its native NoN (area formerly known as Ethiopia), and wet jungle climates - indeed the Ripper can be used as an improvised defoliator (operator discretion is advised)...

...the Ripper unfortunately has its drawbacks, however. The high rate of fire and 7.62 rounds had to be compensated with a 5.5 kg loaded weight (The weight of the integrated DAD's various shroudings, redundancy systems and solar/battery power actually intended) which is comparable to contemporary Squad Automatic weapons! This weight and the standard muzzle break seem to control recoil, but forces an average operator to use the Ripper at hip level for the duration of fully automatic fire, often spraying the weapon side-to-side.

The rotating bolt, gas-operated firing system is based on the legendary Kalashnikov, already familiar with the Brotherhood for its unfailing reliability. Although the shock-absorbing effects of the compressing recoil spring and gas operation system of the Kalashnikov actively reduce the impact of recoil when firing the weapon, it also causes some unusual quirks, such as reliable semi-automatic fire, but inaccurate burst-fire - it is actually encouraged to use fully automatic bursts to engage targets and suppress the enemy, followed by semi-automatic fire on the stragglers. This can be attributed to the rate of fire of the Ripper - multiple shots are not percieved individually and then only after firing are the cumulative impacts actually felt - firing the weapon from the hip allows automatic fire to be effective and controlled.

...all in all, the NMI Ripper is a lethal addition to the Brotherhood's forces - able to provide a compact, albeit somewhat crude and heavy source of high-speed, medium range stopping power - a weapon that has earned its grisly name and strikes fear into the hearts of the Brotherhood's enemies...

OOC: Ok here's the NDII's 'Defender' Heavy Tank, my most favourite mechanized armoured unit i've thought up of so far.

IC:

Excerpt from "The Great Divide: The Differences Between BoN and NoN Armour and Military Doctrines"

...advances in tank arms and armour can be treated as an arms race between the two - whenever a tank design has an improved feature, such as an advanced main gun, the enemy will often times develop a more effective armour. In order for this new armour to be penetrated, one will have to advance main gun technology further. Thus, the cycle goes on....

...such 'leap-frogging' of technology has invariably caused another consequence - as more and more powerful and heavy armour and weaponry is put into place, modern MBT's gain more and more size and weight. This has led to issues of the mundane such as logistics (more powerful and thus fuel consuming engines are required to move MBTs' massive weights), problems with infrastructure (roads and bridges become damaged when traversed by these armoured behemoths) and the more pressing such as maintenance problems due to system intricacy, speed, and maneuverability issues.

...National Defence Industry Inc. has tried to solve the leap frogging system with an unconventional philosophy - instead of developing newer, more powerful, bulky and heavy arms and armours for tanks - use existing technologies to make the combat environment itself aid the tank in combat.

...It is with this new idea that the NDII has developed the Nation of Nod's Newest MBT incarnation - the 'Defender'.

NDIIDefenderMediumTank.jpg

The NDII Defender is a fearsome tank, armed with Dual tandem-fired C125GS 125 mm cannon systems, a gunner mounted 'Torrent' machine gun with underslung anti-tank rocket launcher, 30 mm autocannon and the NDII Rotary Obstacle Removal System II (RORS II) an advanced defensive tool and in the hands of a sadistic tank commander, gruesome weapon against infantry

The 'Defender' forgoes the 'leap-frogging' of technology and NDII claims that it uses existing technologies to their fullest potential. The tank shuns overly large-calibre guns, using the readily available 'Compact 125 mm Gun System' used in tandem to defeat existing ERA and other advanced armours - the first shell will strike the enemy tank, simultaneously activating and thus wasting one-use anti penetrator defences, while also helping the gunner lead the second shot straight into the breach.

The tank's chassis is built on a fully modular, high powered and low profile (it is said the Defender's chassis was built on a now defunct stealth heavy tank concept) system. Two hinged, main-body-compartments make the tank's 'scorpion carapace body', with each hull segment housing an engine and its two powered treads. The treads can also move independently, giving the Defender an unparalleled flexibility and improved shock absorbancy - the individual segments can contour to uneven ground and complement the tanks standard suspension.

The entire autoloading system is held within the tank's 'scorpion tail', a unique turret and gun housing design in that, while it can turn its turret base like a normal tank's, it also can individually move the turret's 'head segment' as well as its 'sting' gun housing, side-to-side and up-and-down, allowing for an incredibly flexible movement and fine adjustments of the gun's aim and virtually eliminates the tank's 'dead-zone' or area where it cannot aim the gun, usually located closely adjacent to its chassis.

...this turret coupled with the Defender's unique chassis has given the NDII 'Defender' the wicked nickname, 'The Desert Scorpion'

For defence, the 'Defender' is armed with two high torque and power-to-weight ratio engines, standard Nod Heavy Tank Armour (Kevlar lining, ceramic titanium plates sandwiched between Nod's top secret armour composition material, NBC protection and the housing for ERA bricks.

However, the Defender also utilizes the Rotary Obstacle Removal System II - a specially machined spiked 'gouging-drum'. This drum can be spun at phenomenal rates controlled by the driver of the tank and powered by one of the tank's engines, although it negates a bit of the tanks speed when spun at full power. The drum can also be lifted and dropped on command allowing the Defender to perform the highly effective 'Active Hull-down Maneuver' or AH-DM...

'Hull-down' is a tactic used extensively in modern mechanized warfare. It is a positon taken up by a vehicle where the hull of the tank is behind a crest, raised ground or other hard-defensive-obstacle that an enemy tank cannot penetrate with its weapons. The turret of a tank in hull-down position however, is exposed and able to sight and fire at the enemy. This position is vital in that a well entrenched tank can effectively fire on the enemy with impunity - tasking the environment to its defence against Anti-tank rounds, rockets and missiles making it practically invulnerable, while it can fire back without the need for survival maneuvers.

Unfortunately, such positions are hard to come by and may not be where the tank needs to be in order to successfully defend an objective. This is where the AH-DM comes in, it allows the defender to set up a hull-down position anywhere he chooses - tungsten carbide tipped grinder-teeth allow the Defender to burrow into sand, dirt, snow, and even high-grade asphalt, giving the tank unparalleled defence at almost no cost (only about a couple minutes to set up).

An animated depiction of the hull-down maneuver

The RORS II is driven into the ground at top speed, kicking up furious mounds of earth infront of the tank, while in this positon, the tank drives forward, making a depression its first set of treads can enter. While still underground and spinning, the RORS is lifted to be in line with the tank's body, the tank is then able to traverse deeper underground, until the operator sees fit to raise the RORS to be parallel to the surface, allowing the tank's hull to go under the debris mound created, as well as the surface of the earth. This combination of debris and ground easily absorb enemy anti-tank weapons - in the highly impossible chance any weapons do penetrate the earth, the Defender's own defences should be enough to compensate, with the majority of armour being at the tanks front glacis, top of the chassis and the turret.

More bloodthirsty and vengeful tank commanders have been documented to use the RORS II system in an anti infantry role, which has given the system the gruesome nickname of 'meat grinder' by the infantry corps.

The RORS II has also been documented to deflect incoming enemy rounds away from the tank when spun at high enough RPM's giving the drum an ad hoc task of defence on the surface, although this is discouraged and only used in emergencies where the Defender has found itself in a close encounter with an enemy tank. Extensive use of this ability will often result in system failure when the Defender needs the AH-DM.

...however, such a phenomenal defensive weapon has its drawbacks. As the drum is spun its creates a distinctively loud roaring sound, alerting the enemy to its presence and giving enemy infantry advance warning to take cover or be mulched. The drum also draws power from one of the tanks engine, affecting the tank's speed at high RPMs.

Defenders are obviously rendered immobile while in AH-DM stance - while the debris mound will protect against tanks coming from the front and to a lesser extent, the sides, the turret can traverse a full 360 degrees and the 'sting' housing can sufficiently depress to fire at the tank's rear - if any enemy tanks can flank and get behind an unsuspecting or unsupported emplaced Defender it will usually spell the end of the tank.

Although the majority of the Defender's chassis is underground and safe, it is still slightly vulnerable to enemy helicopter gunships that it is unable to shoot down, a few well-placed anti-tank munitions can disable the tank, again in the rear. To this end a policy of 'shoot 'n scoot' is encouraged - after the Defender has scored a few kills, it must displace at once - lest the enemy bring support aircraft equipped with bunker-busting bombs, which are the arch nemesis of the Defender....

...other cases have reported Defenders being turned into permanent defensive guns, as the ground has deteriorated while the tank was in AH-DM stance, effectively trapping the tank until dedicated recovery vehicles can save the tank and its crew. Such is also the case in urban scenarios - rarely, the RORS system will become lodged in underground piping, electrical lines, and in some unfortunate cases, gas lines!

...the tank's dual-tandem system means the Defender ensures more kills, but at the cost of increased ammunition consumption, this has been remedied by a built in ammo receiver housed in the back of the turret (OOC: the back plate you can knock off in Halo) to allow for speedy rearmament even while in AH-DM mode, however this has created another glaring weakness - if enemy commandos can get behind the tank while its loading hatch is open and place charges, the tank's weaponry is doomed, and the entire tank can be subject to catastrophic structural loss, resulting in an explosive demise...

All in all, the Defender is aptly named...able to simultaneously strike fear into the enemy while strengthening its own troop's resolve, advance to an enemy position, take and hold the objective, while being able (in most cases) to extract itself from the area when need be. While designed to supplant the NDII 'Super Heavy Devastator Tank', it has instead complemented the behemoth greatly, and has proven itself in the Battle of Addis Ababa.

OOC: Also guys, just to make things clear, all of the stuff in the table i made on the first post has already 'happened', its just that I havent told you about it yet (ie, my nation has kept to itself about its military findings, and is now coming into the spotlight)...when i post a post regarding 'the latest from NMI or NDII'! I mean that that info is canonically an archived announcement...this is just to clear things up when I RP, the arrangement between me and mykep, however is canonical, since the RORS II system was used in my historical battle, just not anywhere else outside of my national boundaries - thats why you guys haven't seen it yet.
