Fun fact: the average gain over this past year was +26.91%, which is astronomically high considering we've been at war for the past two months.  I guess it helps that we were at war this time last year, but there's a remarkably small amount of alliances who actually lost score this year.

Best Year
- DOOMBIRD DOOMCAVE - 2014 was the year of the Doombird, and the stats show it.  They've added nearly 70% in score to not only jump from the bottom of the second tier into a sanctioned position, but have also become seemingly-untouchable and one of the centres of the political world.  Never since 1962 have so many Americans been scared of Cuba.
- Viridian Entente - After falling more than 40% in 2013, Viridia is back with style.  Not only did they have the largest nation gain of the year, but they also added 70% to their score and jumped from the bottom of tier two to return to a sanctioned position.  Some might say that the war took down some of their competition, but with the kind of growth they've been seeing, it was only a matter of time.
- Umbrella - This decision was *very* difficult (they're the third alliance to occupy this bronze medal spot before posting, provided I don't change my mind again).  A year ago, when this alliance sat in 13th place overall and half a point outside of sanction, no one would have been surprised to hear that they'd be once again sanctioned at the end of 2014.  Rising up to fifth place, however, through a very competitive part of the rankings while posting a 55% score gain is something that deserves some extra recognition.
 
Honourable Mention
HM - Valhalla - Very close to a bronze medal, after reforming during 2013 and starting this year in the middle of tier two, they've managed to post a very impressive score gain for the ensuing year, and move into a sanctioned position to boot.  With other alliances rebuilding after the war, it will be interesting to see how long they can hold onto this spot.
HM - Siberian Tiger Alliance - With a nearly 70% score jump and a move to the top of tier three from just outside of the main rankings, these guys popped back onto the radar for anyone who was paying attention.  Looking forward to see what you can do in the upcoming year.
 
Disclaimers
Competition this year was the stiffest I've ever seen, and there are a lot of alliances who did amazingly for themselves that I just don't have the space to give proper tribute to.  I've changed my mind on the above awards so many times, and I only have so many to go around.  NATO and Nusantara Elite Warriors had amazing years, posting 55% score gains to end at the top of tier two, but they just weren't able to push into a sanctioned spot.  Non Grata did very well for themselves as well by moving up a pile of spots, while Nordreich and New Sith Order both jumped up by a couple of tiers, though the former was due to a merger.  Missing out on a medal this year (or even an honourable mention) is certainly nothing to be ashamed of.

Worst Year
- Supernova-X - A four-alliance merger that started out with a great deal of potential, this briefly-sanctioned alliance saw controversy and discord from the get-go, as elements from two of its founding alliances rejected the merger and reformed their former alliances.  Add to that their central position in our current global war (and the 6m in damage they've taken from it), and this alliance finds itself with half the score its constituent alliances started 2014 with.  Certainly not the result they wanted.
- Pax Corvus - They won the silver medal for best year in 2013, and now they've won the silver medal for worst year in 2014.  After jumping 29 spots to grab a very secure sanction spot last year, their suffered after their twenty-day war against Doombird and never managed to recover.  Their slight score gain can be little consolation when everyone else did so well.
- United Purple Nations - Many alliances fell out of the main rankings this year, but this alliance definitely had the largest tumble.  After having an amazing year last year, and starting 2014 in the middle of third tier and rising, you've dropped half your membership and half your score to end up just about where you were two years ago.  Not exactly what an alliance wants to hear after doing so well for the first half of that timespan.
 
Dishonourable Mention
DM - Mostly Harmless Alliance & Fark - These two aqua alliances share very similar stories for 2014; both holding onto the bottom edge of a sanction a year ago, neither one did horribly if you look at them in isolation.  In comparison to everyone else, however, dropping 10+ rankings must be a bitter pill to swallow.  Their only saving grace from having a medal of their own is that our silver medal winner had farther to fall.
