"Well at least now it is certain that they'll eventually try to invade again. And at least they have realized that they never were Roman to begin with. I guess we'll really never be left alone."

"You're funny."

What in the world makes you think they'll invade you again? Some communists can be reasonable, why can't these?

In any case, we recognize this change and welcome the GDR back to the world.

"Thank you very much."

Communism is never reasonable.

We will not have any political or economic dealings with this perversion of a nation

"Perhaps you have forgotten Saboria/Canada? You were on rather neutral terms with them, despite their rational communist ideology, which we are using here."

The Kingdom of Cochin recognizes the German Democratic Republic.

"Thank you."

The Rheinmark Expeditionary Force Returns Home!

After their brief welcome home parading in the streets of Frankfurt, the troops were sent to the border as part of the force deployed there who were fortifying and manning the border with the GDR.

Semi-Classified

Border fortification construction is progressing, nearing 50% completion. Evacuated citizens have begun being moved into their new homes. Artillery, AA, Gepards, and all missile defenses are online. Soldiers are ready for defensive action.

*Classified*

Satellites watched the movements of the nations surrounding the GDR, of course.

The borders with Dalmatia and Rheinmark were nowhere as heavily fortified than those with 'Deutschland', but that was not deemed necessary. These nations were simply not powerful enough to challenge the country seriously without getting help from their allies, and thus each of these borders was defended by merely 15 divisions each. The northern border was defenses by 25 divisions, while the harbours and coasts were defenses by five. Near the border with Italy, another three divisions were stationed, but those mostly were there to ais the border police from stopping illegal immigrants of emigrants.

In total, 63 divisions were at the borders of the country, far less than half its armed forces. 15 divisions were on average less than 75 kilometers away from the 'occupational' forces, still tasked with merely observing, and possibly intervening if they got uppity, trying to hurt citizens of the GDR, damage infrastructure or any such things.

Each division had a tank-division as complement, and the necessary AA, artillery, etc. Thus, 300 tanks were at the italian borders, 100 tanks per division, for example.

The other 77 divisions were spread all over the country, in their respective barracks, nearby families and friends. Of course, they continued all training as usual, but at least they could now visit their relatives when off-duty or on weekends.

Somewhere in Austria, in a laboratory complex.

"So you've finally done it, eh? Successful once more."

"And again with you as my leading scientist."

"Only that here, I've been that under the King. In Canada, you got me into service."

"What matters is that we're working together, Leclerc, in a country that was very susceptible to our ideals, surrounded by nations wishing for its downfall."

"Dalmatia, led by Visari's inbred son. Germany, commanded by Tanzband, who seems to have been brainwashed thoroughly. Rheinmark, with complete idiots in the high ranks. At least one of these nations is under Martens' thumb, not to speak of all the other brainwashed EU members."

"Indeed. I wonder what Martens is thinking, with me so close to him. Ha, I'm willing to bet he's soiling his pants!"

"Or Visari, once you make it known that I'm here, too. I'd bet he'll at least throw a tantrum when he finds out the man opposing his father for such a long time at the helm of the ComIntern has returned to haunt him."

"But, unfortunately, we won't see their faces."

"Yes, yes, But it doesn't matter, we'll just let this glorious nation grow, in the name of communism."

"It's been too long that Europe was without a communist nation, a strong one at that. Sure, people don't like us as much, but as long as we're the only ones standing between Visari, Martens and another Nordland, we will have support. The EU can say whatever the hell they want, but if two member nations are Martencist and two others have a history of supporting Nords, then the other EU-members are merely a means to an end."

"Their leaders claim otherwise, of course. Heh. As if anybody with half a brain ever believed them. Anyways, you wanted to check on our advances?"

"Yes. I'd like to know how far you've come to finishing those projects."

"Ah, well...quite far, with some. The genetic manipulation is going very well, while the new LHC progresses just according to schedule. Völkerball, on the other hand, is progressing rather slowly. Replicating the Sword of the Crown's abilities in interfacing with machines is proving harder than originally thought. By the way, shouldn't we rename and re-indoctrinate it?"

"That would be a good idea, yes. It would be a somewhat weird change, but hey, whatever. Propaganda works."

"Yes. Now, about the enhanced people we're trying to make..."

"I'm listening."

"It'll take months, if not years. We're working in an area where I'm the best man on the planet, yes, but changing humans like that, then raising them at an accelerated rate whiole trying to keep up with them is very hard work. It depends on how smart you want them to be."

"They should be capable of working well as soldiers and labourers but not necessarily highly intelligent. Just stronger and a better understanding of tactics and strategy. More agile than the average human, but still compatible with our standard suits."

"Well, that's a lot you're asking for, Lynneth. For everything you want, it'll take me some more months to make it reality."

"I know. But I know that you can do it. You're the only man qualified for it; No other nation in the world has as much knowledge about genetic manipulation as we. The only ones coming close to our abilities would be Rebel Army and Viniland. Neither of them have ever conducted such research, however, so we're at the forefront."

"And condemned once it's public information."

"Possible. But sacrifices need to be made. Science and Mankind must progess."

"And thus, we slaughter hundreds in the name of Science, to understand ourselves better."

"Most of those are clones, though."

"I know, I know. Few actually understand anything of what's happening. Ah, well." Leclerc sighed. "Back to work."

"I'll see you in a few days, then."

"Yes, of course."

"You are still removing the free market." -President Uberstin

"Every company will have 40% of its assets stateowned if its headquarters are located in the GDR. Companies from outside will only have their assets within the GDR stateowned like that. If they follow the laws, do that the ideology dictates, et cetera, they will get these assets back over a certain period of time. If they fail, the statecontrol will be continued or even strengthened, up to 80% of their assets if they do it wrong.

They merely have to work hard and properly, just like the citizens of the Republic. It could be seen as a more authoritarian Ubersteinianism, with some important changes, like us striving to be a modern communist society."

These heavy handed laws restrict free enterprise and therefore most Tahoan corporations that previouly traded extensively with the Holy Roman Empire and its predecessor states will be forced to withdraw. Tahoan products will invariably find a way into the market of the GDR anyways through middlemen. It is regretable that one of our largest trading partners in Europe would force this upon us.

Perhaps if a free trade agreement could be reached, relations would dramatically improve as well as assisting both our nations economies

"Trade itself is not restricted; These assets only include direct branches. We must have failed to mention that.

Should you wish so, we will continue the pact that Austria once made with you. It would include tariff-free trade and the like, though we still do expect corporations that wish to establish direct branches to adhere to our laws.

Of note is that while 40% of an enterprise's branch may be owned by the state, we will not interfere in their practises, etc, as long as they follow our laws, as should really be expected of them. If they do that, they shouldn't really feel much of a difference."

th_AMBER_GUARD_Soviet_Poster_by_PaulSi.jpg

The Amber Guard is an organisation of the military that was founded only recently, after the governmental change. It aims to support the military, the police and the state in their endeavours. It consists mostly of volunteers from the military and police, wearing specially made uniforms that are amber-coloured and have full HAL-exosuits included, enabling the wearer to easily lift things that normal people couldn't.

The Amber Guard's armour is similar to that of standard forces, only made to look different. They carry the same weapons and are, all in all, perhaps an 'extension' of the Military and Police.

There are 20,000 Amber Guards in the GDR.

"Sir, could you take a look on this for a moment?"

Leclerc sighed and turned to face his colleague. "What is it, Walther?"

"Please just come for a moment."

"Ugh, fine."

Leclerc followed his fellow (but less experienced) scientist into the tract where project Völkerball was going on.

"Wait, isn't today the first time you're going to test implanting some things directly into the brain?"

"Indeed, we're going to do that. I thought you'd like to watch."

"Why, that would be very interesting. I donn't have a doctorate in neurology, but I'm sure there's something to learn there."

"You always learn, don't you?"

"Of course, life's a cycle of learning, understanding, applying the learned to learn more. Now, who'll be the subject?"

"Laura Sieger, 23 years old. Red hair, considers herself to have a nice body, concious of herself, somehow also rather paranoid. Thinks her ex-friend is out to get her. As will be usual, she was randomly selected and of course has no relatives or other such things keeping her in society. The only person that would care and miss her is the aforementioned ex-friend who recently got hospitalized when he tried beating a soldier up while drunk. Resulted in a heavy concussion, so it may be that he won't even remember her once he gets out."

"Poor boy. Anyways, when'll we start?"

"In a few minutes."

"Excellent."

They continued walking until they arrived in an observation room overseeing an OP with a modern surgery-robot (somewhat modified) as well as a nurse. A girl was strapped onto the operating table, looking a bit dizzy and tired, probably just waking up from anaesthesia.

"You're not going to anaesthesize her?"

"Unfortunately for her, no. We need to analyze her reactions, brainwave patterns, et cetera. It'll be a bit loud in the room, I imagine, but luckily, it's soundproofed."

"And the nruse?"

"She doesn't mind screaming, strangely."

Finally, the girl's senses returned fully, and she opened her eyes completely.

"Wha-...?"

She looked around, somewhat frantically, finally seeing the nurse and looking directly at her.

"Hey, where am I? What happened, and what is this place?"

Several seconds passed and the nurse's expression, a wide smile, didn't change. Laura realized she wouldn't get an answer from that person. The tried to restrain her panic and fear, fighting against the restraints holding her in place.

She started shouting into the room, "Hey! What're you doing with me? Let me go!"

She also shouted expletives.

But then, finally, a voice sounded through the room, from a speaker.

"Hello there, young lady. You have been chosen at random to participate in this experiment. It will most likely result in your death, but the results we'll get from this will benefit the nation and perhaps even the world in the end. For you, as person, it is unfortunate, but look at it this way: You'll contribute greatly to the advance of science and understanding the human brain."

By then, fear and panic had overtaken her mind. She tried to flail, but was bound to well.

When the surgery robot activated, she began screaming. The nurse simply stood at the side, ever smiling.

Deutsche Demokratische Nachrichtenagentur (ddna; German Democratic News Agency)

Wien

Some time ago, the HRE begun a project to go into space.

Today, we are proud to announce that the first spaceshuttle has taken off from a spaceport near Innsbruck. Currently, it is circling the planet and will come back down within the next hours. After a few more such missions, the first mission to the moon will be started, after which a massive project will be begun.

th_spacestation5.jpg

A space station! Already, several components are being prepared and built, though most of the station will of course be assembled in space. It will be powered by a fusion reactor near the central habitat. A total of 50 people will be capable of living and working within it for several months at a time. The station will also be utilized as refueling station for deep-space missions, to Mars and possibly even manned missions beyond the fourth planet of the solar system.

th_Pegasus_by_bagera3005.png

Possible only through the Pegasus shuttle. Two are scheduled to be built and fit with fusion reactors as well as so-called 'fusion-torches', fusion-powered drives that can accelerate the ship for much longer periods than any rocket-fuel.

On another topic, the Hindenburg class battleships have been recalled to Koper Harbour, as apparently there seems to be miscalculations with their weaponry, most notably the railguns, apparently being somehow underpowered. They will also receive new power plants as it seems, fusion to be exact. Similarly, all other nuclear-powered ships of the Navy will be upgraded in this way, enabling them to supply more power to the guns.

Experts claim that with guided shells, the railguns will eventually be capable of hitting a target almost a thousand kilometers away, which we find rather insane, to be honest. The math works, however, say experts, especially if the guns are properly powered. The guns will also be made smaller to allow for smaller, yet more powerful projectiles, as less weight will enable them to move faster. The difference will be several hundred meters per second, if not more, say engineers.

There also will be a replacement of all gatling-CIWS weapons. Allegedly, they will be replaced by 'microwave' guns that fire a powerful, localized EMP blast to shut any electronics of a target down that's clower than 10 kilometers.

In the meantime, the economy is going up and up, growing like crazy. Compared to last year, the GDP has risen by almost 40%, to more than 5.2 trillion. Suprisingly, inflation has staid relatively low, though economic experts have no idea why. Some claim it's Rational Communism at work, others say it's pure luck that there wasn't a massive depression yet.

In Mattersburg, members of the Amber Guard have successfully raided and destroyed an NS-Martencist ring which also dealt heavily with drugs. The members will be imprisoned until their cases can be reviewed. It is likely that they will be found guilty, as the Amber Guard has confiscated more than enough material to imprison each of these men for a hundred years or so. They will most probably work in labour-camps.

Thank you for listening.

"How'd it go?" Leclerc had to leave shortly after the operation started, saying he had a meeting. Nobody said it, but they all new even Leclerc couldn't really stomach watching a person's skull opened to that machines could be jammed in.

"Well, she actually survived the procedure, but obviously she's traumatized by it. We got all the info we wanted and then some, but we'll need to rehabilitate her. The brain generally doesn't like being tampered with unless anaesthesized. And we didn't do that, so you can guess how she's feeling."

"Poor girl. When will you do the next test?"

"Tomorrow."

"Nice. by the way, who's that nurse?"

"Her name's Nurse Verity. She's, well...Kind of a sadist. She loves hearing people scream, so we figured she'd be less dangerous if we gave her some of what she wants."

"By letting her listen to things like that operation?"

"Yes, and letting her watch and whatnot. It stops her from trying to go all crazy on us at least."

"Why'd you employ her, anyways?"

"She's crazy, but she's one of the best nurses I've ever seen. There's doctors who'd love to have skills like that."

"Gee. But, well, okay. If you say she's an important asset, then she'll stay."

"She is important. Did you know she can to a brain-surgery all on her own?"

"Are you serious? That woman must have ten arms or something."

"She doesn't, but damn is she fast. And she does it well! Unbelievable until you've seen it."

"I can imagine."

"Anyways. We already have some people for the next four such tests, then we'll look at the data and see what we can get from it. Shouldn't take more than a week."

"And then?"

"Then we'll try reproducing the most optimal results. Afterwards, it's time to test the actual interfaces, and we'll work our way up until we can connect the first person to a computer, reliably that is."

"And then you're going to try and transfer consciousness into computers?"

"A bit later, but precisely that. Overall, it'll take at least a year, if not more."

"You do know that Lynneth may be dead by then?"

"Yes, but I can't help it. I'd need so many more resources to do it more quickly and even then I can't guarantee anything. There's too many unknown variables right now, we're basically just at the beginning of this."

"But you can guarantee me you will be able to do it eventually?"

"Within this decade, I guarantee it, Fjodor. I can also guarantee that these interfaces will be superior to any pure machine-AI, more reliable, learn more easily and controlled more easily. But I do not know when."

"Well, I hope it'll be soon enough. I don't really want to take over if he dies."

"I can understand that, but I'm no magician, just a scientist."

"I know, I know. As am I. Now get back to your work."

"Will do. See you, Leclerc."

"Later."

Accepted. We will send enough construction crews to build 5 plants per 6 months. They're quite simple, really and your technological capabilities should help in speeding the construction to this speed. The only things that will need to be produced in the HRE are the reactor's components, which are incredibly simple on their own, despite their complexity once put together

Very well, with this transmission you will find a schedule of proposed locations as decided by the Imperial Department of Internal Affairs, Division Energy, Section Future technologies, Subsection International Cooperation. The plans also include proposed location for crews to stay, local resources and power use.

We thank you and the money has been confirmed by our banks to have been send.

As new foreign minister, I approve of this plan. Engineering crews have been notified and they will arrive within the week in the Phoenix Empire, by plane. They'll have most of the things they need with them, even plans for construction of plants that will build the reactors so that you can keep them running by yourself for most of the time. It'll still require a 6-monthly visit by our engineers to make sure everything's up to standards.
The detonation of a fusion power plant can be nasty.
