Apparently, yesterday several people tried to get an audience with Lord Vetinari, attempting to establish a 'terrorists' guild'. Completely ludicrous, obviously.

These people have been imprisoned due to wanting to destabilize Bavaria, thus amounting to treason. It is expected that they will be executed after standing trial before members of the Judges' guild.

In other news, a National Office for Environmental Protection (or NOEP) has been established. It is hoped that not only will this improve the Bavarian environment, but also, in the long run, make the lives of Bavarian citizens healthier and reduce the upkeep for older structures, such as cathedrals, due to less damaging emissions in the air.

Already, the NOEP has proposed replacing all gas-guzzling vehicles to be replaced with clean, electric variants, due to abundance of electrical energy in Bavaria. Additionally, restrictions on what kinds of filters factories must put onto their chimneys (or other vents through which exhausts or exhaust fumes leave the building) are being planned already. Reportedly, the aim of the NEOP is to make Bavaria not only one of the richest countries, but also the cleanest.

OOC: Built the NEO, have the lowest possible environment without rad cleanup, even without border walls, lols. :awesome:

OOC: Lucky you. Congratulations. :awesome:

Due to recent resurgence of Nordlandism in the Rheinmark, the government has decided to slightly elevate the military's state of alert - approximating to Defcon 4.8 right now. Border guards have been strengthened, and there are reports of tightened security as bavarian citizens appear to put bounties on high-ranking individuals of entities such as the Nordic Union Party or the Norse Religion Association independent from each other.

Lord Vetinari has not commented as of now, though leaders of other guilds may eventually do it for him.

On the topic of the reunification of France, we have but one comment:

Silly frenchmen.

On another topic, there have been demonstrations in a number of cities, people demanding that the Bavarian, Swabian and Franconian people be united under one banner. Some demonstartors have produced maps on which the territory they want united is depicted.

Lord Vetinari has not yet commented on this, though riot-police has been dispatched to the biggest of the demonstrations to keep the peace.

On the topic of the reunification of France, we have but one comment:

Silly frenchmen.

"Yes Indeedly so. The French Rebels didnt put up much a fight, which was a shame. I was expecting a Napolean, but I instead got a Saddam.."

"The Empire also supports my native Bavarian governments stance on the riots and urges all Germans to maintain order and demonstrate peacefully; Violence leads to nothing but anarchy and bloodshed."

*Secret, deep below the Königsbau*

Several generals of the Bavarian Army as well as Vetinari himself were in the room, looking at several large screens that depicted possible movements of Commonwealth forces. Geostationary satellites as well assats in LEO were using whatever means available to supply pictures and videos of activities on the borders, each in such high resoution that single soldiers could be watched in their activities.

Geography was of course both an advantage as well as a drawback; Considerable parts of the southern, slovenian borders were impossible to attack in great numbers, aside from using roads and mountaineers, for any side attacking there. It was decided after some discussion that defensive positions near passes were of high priority, forcing invaders through bottlenecks. Further in the west, there was less favourable terrain and an elastic defense plan would be used to allow bavarian forces to respond to any threat within an as short time as possible.

Such defenses were to be established from Ormoz into the north, along the borders, past Bratislava and then into the east as the border goes, until Gmünd, where hilly and mountainous terrain slowly began once more, making defensive positions easier to establish. From there, defensive lines went into the Bavarian Forest. All hoped that no fighting would be conducted there in the case of war, as the densely forested low mountains were a national reserve. A single fire could potentially burn the entire forest down, a catastrophe of incredible proportions for not only the humans, but especially the animals inhabiting it. Only recently wolved had begun spreading through it again and even three bears were living in it.

From the forest up to the prussian border, the terrain was ragged, but that was the case with the bohemian side, as well. All in all, this little country did have the requirements to beat an army more than twice the size of its own armed forces back, with relative ease. Additionally, there were numerous rivers, streams and the like that could make advanced even harder.

The two single most important rivers for such defense were the Danube and the Inn, protecting the capital of Munich from the northeast, north, northwest, west and southwest.

Preparations were being made near the borders and at important positions and bridges further inland, to make life for any invading enemy quite literally hell. Artillery, rocket artillery, anti-air, just to name a few of the things being brought into position. Everything a modern army and airforce needed.

However, intel reports indicated a build-up of forces at the bavarian-prussian border. this made defensive positons there necessary, as well, though it would thin the entirety of the armed forces only slightly.

None would be let through.

OOC: Requesting a mod to rename this to 'Holy Roman Shens'

IC:

*Classified*

As Europe lied, slandered and claimed that the Empire would invade them, the Emperor merely ordered the borders to be manned as usual, with the majority of the armed forces - 900,000 of them - to be stationed at various locations within the country, where it would be evident that they could not possibly plan an attack on enemies.

Similarly, tank divisions and other such forces were stationed at strategic defensive positions. Nothing to aggrieve the surrounding countries.

The Empire would keep to its promise, and be peaceful.

OOC Note: Don't complain about what I'm writing here. I don't care about your exact casualties, and I'm only doing that so I know what I can rebuild.

It'll be inaccurate, but hey, that's what you get for being a state-controlled news agency in a kingdom.

Also requesting a mod to change this to 'Austrian Shenanigans'. Thank you.

Wien

As the nation is recovering from the short, yet costly war, the King has asked all people of the Kingdom to help in the effort of rebuilding the devastated regions, be it by monetary aid or helping refugees from the assaulted regions, or any other means they can think of.

First, the attack in the North.

Amongst the things that were attacked was the national defense network, an array of anti-air positions, some mobile, others not. It was attacked by both a cyber-attack - which luckily did not much damage, thanks to the latest technology - and a great missile-assault, which heavily damaged several of the stationary AA positions, but largely, the anti-air capabilities of the country were unaffected, more than 70% of AA-assets surviving the initial attack, thanks to their great mobility.

Air-raids were launched afterwards, some deterred by the working AA, others getting through. Especially larger border-cities, such as Hof, Coburg or Würzburg suffered heavy damage in industry and infrastructure, many roads and parts of the highways destroyed. In the initial air-battles, an estimated 25 planes were lost, with an additional 87 during later stages, while our pilots claimed at least an equal number of hostile planes shot down, many of these claims unfortunately unverified.

The Navy suffered damage as well, two destroyers lost and three frigates heavily damaged, while much of the rest of the fleet managed to leave port before the missile-attack on Koper and other coastal cities occured. On sea, no skirmishes occured, though additional missile-attacks damaged a carrier and two cruisers lightly. Damages to the harbours are high, and it will take weeks, if not months to properly repair all.

After all this, the main-attack on the ground followed, with an army of ten divisions (10,000 per division) attacking from the north, though the Theatre North, with a total of thirty divisions, quickly moved to intercept the attack. Estimates say that for every ten Austrian soldiers, thirteen of the enemy fell, though the number could potentially be even higher than that, as the enemy assaulted defensive positions and our troops were dug in at strategic locations, smaller groups of men harassing enemy flanks. Numerous czech tanks and helicopters are claimed to have been shot down, with total casualties running at least in the dozens, perhaps even hundreds, though no number is certain unless verified by the Commonwealth.

Both armies were highly mobile, with the bavarian forces having superior mobility and thus capable of preventing the enemy from attacking any flanks or gaining an advantage by surrounding our forces.

Fighting continued until the declaration of a ceasefire, after which peace was signed. An estimated 9,178 soldiers and 142 tanks and other vehicles were destroyed in the ground fighting.

In the east, the Rheinmark unexpectedly declared war and attacked Liechtenstein and Vorarlberg. Luckily, Theatre Center had forces in the area, a total of roughly 30,000 specially trained Mountaineers defending against the enemies on the ground, supported by 800 tanks and other vehicles as well as 10 air-squadrons. Casualties are much lower here than on any other front, with up to 23 enemy soldiers falling for every ten of ours killed, according to military sources, though a verification from Rheinmark would be needed for this. If it is true, then for the 2,198 dead Austrians, more than 5,000 enemies would've fallen in this theatre. Aerial casualties are uncertain, but as per official reports, less than 15 planes were shot down, while on the ground, a mere 52 vehicles found their end.

Of course, there were many other conflicts, the only direction from which we were not attacked being Italy, many of which we will unfortunately not report on.

All in all, an estimated 58,600 soldiers lost their lives on our side in this short conflict, 18 squadrons of airplanes were lost and 916 vehicles destroyed.

Damages to infrastructure and industry are in the billions, months or even years will be needed until the cities, factories and military bases are repaired.

And despite all this, the King asks the population to not hold a grudge against the invaders, who attacked despite numerous assurances that the fallen Empire would not attack anyone, despite guarantees of independence issued to all european nations.

And we, of the Austrian News Agency ask our readers, heed the King's request and do not hold grudges, for doing so will unmake our country and may lead to this beautiful country being split up by barbaric invaders, unaware of the glorious culture of Bavaria, Austria and Slovenia.

Let us rebuild and keep the peace.

For the Republic of the United Netherlands it has been confirmed that because of relatively limited action that we saw 65 soldiers have been killed, 207 wounded and no hardware was lost. We were very fortunate indeed.

Austria- as well as our Allies in this conflict have our sympathies. The slaughter was immense and it should never happen again.

The Dragon Empire is sympathetic to the people of Austria. We would like to offer to send a fraction of the Salvation Army to help with repairs and distributing humanitarian aid to the civilian population.

"It would be greatly appreciated, though your men should avoid too densely populated areas such as Vienna, Koper or Munich - you participated in the war on the opposite side, and not all may welcome you. People in smaller towns may appreciate the help more."

Austria- as well as our Allies in this conflict have our sympathies. The slaughter was immense and it should never happen again.

"Indeed, it should never happen again.

We will never initiate such senseless war, especially not after the loss of so many young men."

With the civil war being over, the nation rebuilds.

At this very moment, hundreds of thousands of volunteer workers are moving into the devastated regions to rebuild what was destroyed, while the military is receiving so many volunteers that they have to turn down many of them. Currently, plans are to reach pre-war numbers, an expansion of the military not being feasible at the time, according to Chief of Staff Schneiderhan.

The technologies that were announced in the news report shortly after the war are in the works of being distributed in larger scales. Every rebuilt hospital will receive at least two surgery-robots, while the laser-fusion reactors are being constructed in this very moment. The computer-brain interfaces will first be tested for any effects on the brain - by a pure volunteer-group, of course - so that distribution of the technology may take some months, and up to a year or two. The AR contact lenses are finishing the last testing stages and will be available for sale once the first bigger mall is rebuilt and shops moved back into it.

Now, to another topic: Nords, Nordlanders and Martencists.

The civil war united the entire populace against them. Communists and Monarchists, working together? You'd usually only hear that in fantasy stories. But it did, in fact, happen. Here, in Austria, every man, woman and child was working against the Martencist menace that attacked our homeland.

Sentiment against the followers of Martens has risen immensely, with recent polls showing that almost 98% of the population are absolutely against pursuing better relations with Rheinmark, Nordland and Dalmatia, while near 80% are for uniting europe against the Martencists. Close to 30% have expressed that a direct attack and without warning would be the best course of action, despite knowing that it would possibly draw the 'Eurasian Union' into the war.

The 'EU' has been described by many as a tool for the Nords to reconquer europe, even before the civil war, when the Holy Roman Empire announced its peaceful intentions, but was attacked despite this, because of mere claims.

All in all, the trends are quite clear: The people are against everything Martens and everything Nord, though the King has stated he will not initiate any kind of aggressive action against neighbouring countries.

Thank you for watching.

As you surely know, Franz Müntefering is now Chancellor and thus ruler of Austria.

Working together with the KPÖ and Grüne, the SPÖ is planning to improve several key parts of austrian society, such as schools, the banking industry or fairer payment for workers. For example, a construction worker currently is earning far less than for example an electrician, something that apparently is to be changed within the time of the coalition's rule. Currently, they are setting up a government agency to determine the hardships of every job and gauge the minimal amount someone should earn by this. Thus, the minimal wage for a construction worker could soon be similar to that of an electrician, though they would likely still be below what both jobs get paid right now. Still, according to a representative of the SPÖ, it's "a first step towards making our country a better and place, with more fairness for everyone".

Further reforms are planned, as well, for example to the social security system of Austria. The exact changes have not been announced yet, but we will of course keep you updated.

Thank you, and good night.

According to an SPÖ speaker, two of the proposals - focusing on schools and wages - are well on the way to being accepted by the Bundestag and work on implementing them - if going through the Bundestag - would begin at the beginning of the next month. It would be, quote, "Another few steps towards a better country, and towards a social state, where things are more fair, while the companies have only slight disadvantages while the common citizen will enjoy a better life."

In the meantime, the Bundestag has approved the movement of a number of military forces, citing the fact that the country is surrounded from almost all sides by Martencists; the same people who began the civil war and likely supported it for its duration. From what we could gather, the Austrian forces will continue to operate in three major 'theatres', East, North and West. The western theatre will have 40 divisions each of tanks and infantry, with the necessary support vehicles (such as artillery) as well as aerial squadrons. In the eastern theatre, 45 divisions each of tanks and infantry will be stationed with appropriate support, while the most forces will be in the northern theatre, with a total of 40 aerial squadrons, 50 divisions of tanks and infantry each as well as the most support vehicles.

Of note is that only the eastern theatre has naval forces assigned to it, being the only one where any naval battles would be relevant.

According to Chief of Staff Schneiderhan, this is all part of deterring an attack onto Austria, all forces having received orders to do defensive preparations as per various battleplans for each region. According to him, the neighbouring countries do not have to worry, despite demands by more militarist citizens that the Martencist nations be attacked and 'wiped off the map'.

That is all for today. Thank you for watching.

Today, the reconstruction of the Uberstein Family estate has finally been finished, the last parts of the building taking longer than expected due to mistakes with delivering the needed materials.

The villa has been rebuilt to look exactly like it was before it was dismantled by the paranoid Scolar Visari, who had claimed that Baron Uberstein's brother, who had been living in the building, was a spy working for Finland.

The last parts of Greater Germany's wrongdoings that Austria can set right have thus been set right. The King announced that no man and woman should ever suffer again under a militaristic and oppressive regime like the fallen Reich again.

On that note, numerous bunkers containing years-old Martencist equipment from before Greater Germany's fall have been unearthed; These bunkers presumably are where the Martencist rebels got their weapons from to fight against our army and country. According to sources in the government, the equipment will be analyzed and, if useful, reverse-engineered and improved, if needed. Should the weapons prove inferior to current standard equipment of the Austrian Army, they will be used for target-practise.

The emptied bunkers will likely be utilized as nuclear shelters, if possible. Otherwise, they will serve as warehouses, for both military and civilian technology, depending on the location.

Ladies and Gentlemen.

Let me acquaint you with some of the technology that has and is being developed over the last years. Do note that everything is indeed real; Nothing is fake.

Laser-based Fusion power: 'Ignition Facility 01'

th_NIF01building_layout.jpgth_NIF02beamline_diagram.png

Left, the basic layout. The laser pulse is generated in the room just right of center, and is sent into the beamlines (blue) on either side. After several passes through the beamlines the light is sent into the "switchyard" (red) where it is aimed into the target chamber (silver). Three football fields could fit inside the IF.

To the right, a simplified diagram of the beampath of a NIF laser beam, one of 48 similar beamlines. On the left are the amplifiers and optical switch, and on the right is the final spatial filter, switchyard and optical frequency converter.

Right, Exterior view of the upper 1/3rd of the target chamber. The large square beam ports are prominent.

Right: Laser Bay 2

th_NIF06Fusion_microcapsule.jpg

IF's fuel "target", filled with either D-T gas or D-T ice. The capsule is held in the hohlraum using thin plastic webbing.

Despite all these elaborate things, the IF is, in fact, cheaper and more powerful per invested money than any previous kind of fusion power generation. Three more of these plants will be built, the first having been completed days ago.

Nowhere else in the world does a construction exist that uses so many lasers. The IF is unique and the first of its kind.

IF 01 stands in Innsbruck.

Robotic surgeons

th_robosurgery.jpg

Right now, in this very moment, 6 of 6 rebuilt hospitals in Austria have 2 robotic surgeons. Surgeon robots are just what they sound like - a pair of robotic arms equipped with a camera that can conduct surgeries with precision and speed that no human could ever muster. They are overseen by human doctors, but largely independent of these men. The robots achieve success rates between 97 and 99% across the board, in any kind of surgery in which they have been used. This is a higher rate than any that human surgeon can claim.

Brain-Computer interfaces: The NIA

th_NIA.jpg

This is the NIA. The Neural Impulse Actuator.

The era of the brain controlled driving is still very far away, but from this day on, your thoughts will be changed. The NIA is an unprecedented device, usable with just about every PC-application you can think of. Working with the NIA’s calibration program, the Actuator captures a variety of signals, such as facial muscle movement, eye movement, brain Alpha waves and Beta waves to control what is happening on your screen. In a game, you could literally fire a gun by merely thinking of it. In a photo-manipulation program, you could change the picture by imagining the desired changes, and they would happen right there, before your eyes. You could write an entire novel, just by thinking the words, never having to touch the keyboard.

And even now, men with only the future in mind are working on making this device better, so that one day, you may be capable of driving your car with only your thoughts.

Monitors over your eyes: ARCL

th_ARcontacts.jpg

Augmented reality contact lenses (ARCL) are simply computer monitors that go directly on top of your eyes, like contact lenses. As a result, you see computer information overlaid on the world you're looking at around you. You could look down a street and see little pop-ups full of information about local stores - or navigate your way to the nearest public bathroom by watching glowing yellow arrows on the street leading you to a cafe with a toilet. And yes, you could also look up into the beautiful, blue sky and see a million Google ads for sky-related products.

You could also be reading our homepage in your contacts while your boss yells at you, or watching movies online while your parents take you out to dinner to talk about their new kitchen remodel.

They can be used to visualize what a building or a given set of structures will look like on the street. Imagine being able to design a building while standing in the vacant lot where it will eventually stand, matching its walls precisely to the proper angles and observing in real life how the sunlight will hit its windows. These contacts will also make it easier for building inspectors of all types to check that structures are up to code: Just stroll around a factory and compare what you're seeing with a virtual overlay of what's supposed to be there (or not there).

Exosuits: HAL

th_HAL_Exosuit.jpg

Great grandma can soon put aside that powered wheelchair she uses to terrorize the residents at her rest home. The robotics venture Cyberdyne's robot-suit "HAL" (Hybrid Assistive Limb) is now available for rent and is being tested on the streets of Vienna.

HAL, an exoskeleton, is a mind-controlled wearable machine that gives humans enhanced mobility. The HAL exoskeleton helps the wearer to carry out a variety of everyday tasks, including standing up from a chair, walking, climbing up and down stairs, and lifting heavy objects. The suit can operate for almost five hours before it needs recharging.

The HAL exoskeleton has robotic limbs that strap to your arms and legs - providing much fuller mobility than a wheelchair. The suit's backpack contains a battery and computer controller. When a HAL-assisted person attempts to move, nerve signals are sent from the brain to the muscles, and very weak traces of these signals can be detected on the surface of the skin. The HAL exoskeleton identifies these signals using a sensor, and a signal is sent to the suit's power unit telling the suit to move in synch with the wearer's own limbs.

HAL comes in three sizes - small, medium and large and weighs in at 23kg (50.7 lbs). A single leg version rents for 1,570 Mark a month, while a two-leg unit goes for 2,300 Mark a month. However, Cyberdyne has yet to announce when HAL will go on sale to the public or what the price tag will be.

Outwitting Gravity: Levitating Mice

th_Levitated_mouse.jpg

Science has now levitated mice using magnetic fields.

Other researchers have made live frogs and grasshoppers float in mid-air before, but such research with mice, being closer biologically to humans, could help in studies to counteract bone loss due to reduced gravity over long spans of time, as might be expected in deep space missions or on the surfaces of other planets.

Scientists working on behalf of the Fraunhofer Society built a device to simulate variable levels of gravity. It consists of a superconducting magnet that generates a field powerful enough to levitate the water inside living animals, with a space inside warm enough at room temperature and large enough at 6.6 cm wide for tiny creatures to float comfortably in during experiments.

Repeated levitation tests showed the mice, even when not sedated, could quickly acclimate to levitation inside the cage. After three or four hours, the mice acted normally, including eating and drinking. The strong magnetic fields did not seem to have any negative impacts on the mice in the short term, and past studies have shown that rats did not suffer from adverse effects after 10 weeks of strong, non-levitating magnetic fields.

"We're trying to see what kind of physiological impact is due to prolonged microgravity, and also what kind of countermeasures might work against it for astronauts," Indorf, the lead researcher of the project, said. "If we can contribute to the future human exploration of space, that would be very exciting." They are now applying for funding for such research with their levitator.

The researchers also levitated water drops up to 5 cm wide. This suggests the variable gravity simulator could be used to study how liquids behave under reduced gravity, such as how heat is transferred or how bubbles behave.

Flying cars: The Moller M400

th_MollerM400_01.jpgth_MollerM400_02.jpgth_MollerM400_03.jpg

The M400 Skycar is a prototype personal VTOL (vertical take-off and landing) aircraft - a "flying car" - called a "volantor" by its inventor Paul Moller, who has been attempting to develop such vehicles for many years. The design calls for four ducted fans - the propellors being covered which is safer and more efficient at low speeds.

The craft is currently under development. The M400 is purported to ultimately transport four people; single-seat up to six-seat variations are also planned. It is described as a car since it is aimed at being a popular means of transport for anyone who can drive, incorporating automated flight controls. It is proposed that in a model for the general public, the driver may only input direction and speed. Piloting knowledge would be unnecessary.

Its features include approximately 491 km/h cruise speed, 579 km/h maximum speed, a maximum altitude of 7.8 km, an ascend speed of 1.4 km/minute, a maximum payload of 340 kg, a maximum take off weight of 1088 kg, more than 8.5 km/liter (bio)ethanol, eight redundant, low-emission Wankel engines for safety, residential garage size, a parachute for the whole machine and road capability for short distances (to be driven to a vertiport/heliport). The fuel mileage is claimed to be similar to that of a big car, but due to the engines likely higher.

According to Moller, development of the M400 Skycar will end within 2 years, so that in at most 3 years, the first M400s will be available for purchase.

These are all technologies that are unique to Austria. No other nation in the world has, as of this report, similar technology.

We are on the forefront of knowledge and technology.

But really, I probably don't have even a tenth of the cool tech that exists even now. Just go research a bit.
