Our Will Is Supreme

It is common in many alliances that the leadership will change hands. Sometimes the cause is RL, other times it's boredom, and often it's just plain old burnout from holding a position that requires constant attendance and responsibility. Such is the case in Zenith.

What is interesting, I've found out, is how myopic, and dare I say, self-important, people become when in those positions for long. Myself included. Not from any personal failings but just due to becoming accustomed to being the ones that hold the alliance together (but only from an administrative perspective, it's easy to forget that it is the membership that actually holds it together). When the leadership decided to step down and dismayed at the initial lack of participation at the charter revisions, we were one step away from crying "the sky is falling."

As it turns out, we were woefully premature in making such a call, as after some great discussion and a poll, the membership responded with a resounding declaration of commitment. Not only that, but out of such collective introspection, we've developed a great new charter, have some new plans in the works, and have redoubled our efforts.

While I'm not a particularly eloquent writer, I tried my hand at rallying the troops:

Once again, Zenith's resolve has been tested. Once again, we have emerged from the dark night of doubt into the light of day- victorious.

Our resolve has been tested, and it remains firm.

We are an alliance of survivors. From its beginnings, Zenith has traveled great distances to be where it is today. From a protectorate to an established alliance, from one color sphere to another, from one set of political affiliations to new friends, through war and betrayal to peace and growth, through shifting administrative structure to clarity of purpose. We are a unique set of intrepid adventurers, fearless in the face of the unknown, eager to taste the rush of risk, and not afraid to try our best. Collectively we are warriors, gamers, poets, scholars, statesmen, goofs, strategists, and all around $@!-kickers.

Things have been tough the last few weeks, of that there's no doubt. But, the people have spoken. No longer shall we tarry, aimless and wandering about, consumed with concern about our future. It's true that RL has reared its head and grabbed a hold on some of our more active members, but that does not mean that's the end of this story. I'm a firm believer that when one door closes, another opens. And this is the opportunity for fresh faces and new voices. Circumstance did hand us a predicament, but in regards to circumstances I'd like to quote Vicente's poignant phrasing:

I cannot accept a surrender to circumstance. Circumstance is what we take in our hands and shape to form our ideals and while circumstances aren't always the kind that we would like, the finest alliances survive the most difficult times.

Now that we have established that we are not going to quit just because of a few bumps in the road, that we are ready to take on any challenges that face us, we must stabilize our operation and begin making gains again.

It's time to get back to the basics.

First of all, it''s important to remember a few key points.

1. It's only a game. While, in my opinion, it's most fun when taken a little seriously, it's still just for fun. On the way to the top, we should remember to enjoy the ride. So hey, take it easy, we'll get there and have a good hearty laugh along the way.

2. Many people play CN for a variety of reasons, and I'm not going to knock some one for playing how ever they wish. But one of the points of the game is to be the best. To get to the top, to have the strongest nations in the best alliance. To be an unstoppable force that none can discount. We need to keep our eyes on the prize.

3. We are invincible. Since no one can be forced to quit the game, as long as we remained determined, we cannot be broken. Defeat starts from within. But so does victory.

4. People are going to come and go. That's the nature of the beast. While we should cherish our members when they are here, we can't hang our success on the presence of a few people. It is a collective effort with collective benefits.

5. Speaking of people, while events have made us pause and calculate our future prospects, things are not as bad as they may seem. To our benefit, many of our friends have returned to us to help where they can. Just to name a few, Vicente is around, SunTzu has come back, both Xaero and Christian have poked their heads in and indicated they may return, and Princess Sole has graced us with her presence again. Furthermore, a lot of the newer nations are around, even if they are quiet. Mike has said he'd be ready to start helping once he's back from vacation. All of the Triumvirate are still here to lend their advice. And, for better or worse, you all are still stuck with me.

Once DK returns the new charter we need to convene to hash out a new strategy. Just like how we've been discussing things out here in the open. Together. I have some suggestions and I'd like to hear yours.

Now, if you want to know my truest thoughts on the future of CN, and they are rather personal, these are it:

In my heart of hearts, in accordance with my deepest convictions, I am going to the top. I'm going to be one of the strongest nations in the game in one of the best alliances. My reputation will sparkle and my name will be known through out the land. I have seen it and know it to be true. I don't care if I'm part of a government or just a regular old dedicated member, I'm going to be the best and the people will know it. This is no mere desire. It is inevitable. It is not based on chance, but on certainty. It is not hope, it is destiny. I'm going to the top, but I am not, and cannot, do it alone.

I don't want just any old alliance.

I want it to be a special alliance, with strength, cunning, righteousness and honor,

I want it to be as I'm surrounded by friends that I like and those whose opinions I trust,

I want it to be that my strength is matched only by my comrade's.

I want it to be Zenith.

Will you come with me?
