Congratulations, Sparta

The NPO war and political machine no longer holds the position of #1 alliance in the Cyberverse. It essentially held that title, more or less consistently for the period of nearly 3 years, easily dominating the history of Planet Bob. Instead of looking back to figure out how we got to this point (which has been talked about ad nausea), I think it would be far more interesting to instead look on the future, and start figuring out what will happen.

To start this article, we have to note two important aspects:

  1. Conflict is inevitable in Planet Bob
  2. Nearly every major conflict on Planet Bob has centered around the NPO in some way

So the first question to be answered is whether or not the NPO will be playing as major of a role as it used to. I have no doubt that it will still hold a significant amount of political capital, but without the center stage as CN's #1 (and with the current direction of the war), their influence will no doubt tumble. In fact, given how close many of the point ratings are, and that no other alliance has held the center position for any notable length of time, it may be a long time before any clear leader again emerges as the center of CN politics. Hence, for some period of time after the end of the war (and the inevitable dissolution of the Karma coalition), there will be some political chaos, without any clear direction. However, the end will always be the same.

Eventually, I think there will again be two factions. One side is quite clear - MK, Superfriends, Gramlins and a few other alliances tend to hold very similar values and have been through similar experiences in CN history. They tend to hold themselves to ideals that they have forged for themselves, and stick to those ideals even if costs them significant amounts of infrastructure. As such, they seem to be the main parties advocating for white peace amongst the Karma coalition (although I cannot speak for all of those represented). They will attract some similar minded alliances to form a new general direction - blocs and associated alliances in what I think of as the political "left" of CN.

The political "right" of CN is much more fuzzy, at this point. I have thought of the "right" as being dominated by the NPO, IRON and other similar alliances. Their idea of playing the game is a bit different, but not wrong either. However, with their downfall of political standing, there will be some sort of vacuum to fill this void of the opposition. There are some alliances associated with the Karma coalition who don't carry the same spirit as some of their leaders - such alliances and members may rise to the top of the opposition. However, what I think is more likely is that the members of the "Hegemony" will again rise up to take positions as the opposition. The organization of the opposition will probably be different, and there might be some new faces, but the conflict will probably be the same.

The only problem with this analysis is that it is very hard to distinguish what is the "right" and what is the "left" of CN beyond political affiliations. It is my contention, however, that the "left" tends to be characterized by valuing ideals, even if they serve no practical purpose. The "right" tends to be characterized by a more pragmatic point of view, doing what is practical and sensible, even if it tends to piss off other people.

Ferrous,

I have also found myself labeling alliances and rulers "right" and "left." The words don't really seem to fit well, but it is still useful to have a label of some sort to delineate the various philosophies.

In addition, I think some of Karma's behavior will sow the seeds of a future opposition. For one, Superfriends have the same negotiation skills as a bull in a china shop. They will use their new found prominence for bullying and retribution. It will not take long for many to get sick of that.
