Agora: Litany of Mistakes

DISCLAIMER: In no way am I connected to Agora any longer. TSO is not a member of Agora. These are only the author's thoughts.

As Agora muddles through its final days, I have taken a few moments to reflect on what we accomplished and did not accomplish. So, with that, I give you a woulda, coulda, shoulda.

If I had my druthers, and could do it over again, I would have done a few things differently.

  1. Independents Only. One of the major problems that Agora had was the fact that several signatories had other blocs that consumed more of their time and resources. 1V and Q were older and more prestigious blocs. Having signatories that were also members of these power blocs worked to our disadvantage since we were basically a second tier concern. Part of the reason we were a second tier concern was because we were only an ODP/Econ bloc. However, it was the alliances from 1V and Q that wanted it to be ODP. In other words, from the very beginning we were chopped liver. Instead, I would probably have pushed to limit the signatories to independent alliances like TFD, NADC, etc. The independent alliances were the most active and reliable.
  2. MDP Instead. While I think we were right in focusing on economics, we should have made it a MDP bloc. With the sordid nature of the Web, all signatories were much more loyal to non-Agora relationships. This created an imbalance. NADC's closest allies were all in Agora, so the dedication was strong. However, this was not so for other signatories. The imbalance was too much and apathy reigned. A unity bloc needs dedication.
  3. Blue Only. This hardly needs to be elucidated. We should have restricted signatories to the blue sphere.

Here's to good intentions!

What about:

4. Don't exclude greater than half of the sphere from the initial talks and then claim to be all about unity later on.

Your bloc failed/is failing because you started off by deeply insulting the majority of the alliances on the blue sphere and then pretended that it never happened for 6 months. Your PR was never very good to begin with, but you made a lot of mistakes in that area as well. Also, being this close to attacking Genesis for a ridiculous reason didn't help you win any points with the rest of your sphere.

Well I'm glad to see common sense got through to you in the end ... interesting that if someone had posted exactly this in one of the Agora threads you'd have got out the clown posting.

Realistically, Agora wasn't really that big of a deal. It was a cross-color economic bloc, not the main foreign policy goal of any involved alliances (I hope). An MDP bloc with only Blue alliances that make the bloc their main foreign policy goal? You're thinking of BLEU, my friend, and comparing Agora to BLEU is like apples and oranges.

I'm torn here, 'cause I like both apples and oranges. I guess if you pushed me, I'd say apples are better. But it is close. Wait. Why were we comparing those again?

Well now, if I said, "This orange is good, but it would be better were it red, had a core, was much harder and contained less citric acid," then should I not have eaten an apple?

Now you say, "Agora is cool, but it would be better if it actually mattered, was exclusive to the Blue sphere, and had an MDP treaty instead of ODP," then yu're no longer talking about Agora; you're alking about BLEU.

So, if Agora had been a MDP bloc, then we could compare it to BLEU apples to apples, right?

Nope. It would also have to be exclusive to blue alliances and the main foreign policy directive of the involved alliances, as you stated in the OP.

-The initial talks started well before the NpO war, when BLEU was still huge and powerful. I assume none of you would have joined the negotiations anyway.

-The attack on Genesis, wasn't a BLEU operation but a MCXA one. We never planned to attack them. We announced that on our Forums, with a spy catcher, and Vox did a good job freaking out, telling it to everyone, which made the negotiations easy. If we wanted war, we would have gotten it.

-I agree we could have tried harder to get a better PR.
