The Mental Attitude in Heiho*

*Ed. Note, the warrior's path

heiho kokoro mochi no koto

The mental attitude in Heiho is no different from that of the everyday attitude. In both peaceful times and in times of battles, it is exactly the same. Be careful to ascertain the truth from a broad viewpoint. Do not become tense and do not let yourself go. Keep you mind on the center and do not waver. Calm your mind, and do not cease in the firmness for even a second. Always maintain a fluid and flexible, free and open mind.

Even when the body is at rest, do not relax your concentration. When you move rapidly, keep a calm, "cool" head. Do not let the mind be dragged along by the body or the body be dragged along by the mind. Pay attention to the mind and ignore the body. Fully inform the mind and do not be diverted by superflouus matters.

Do not be overly concerned by external matters. Strengthen your fundamental spirit and act in such a way as to not reveal the depths of your spirit to others.

Small men must know thoroughly what it is like to be big men, and big men must know what it is like to be small men. It is essential for both big men and small men to be honest and not be hampered by their physical condition.

One must consider things in general with a clear and open mind. It is essential to diligently improve both knowledge and the spirit.

Broaden your knowledge and know the justice and injustice of the world; know the good and the bad of things. Walk the path of various arts and skills. After you can no longer be deveiced by people in general, for the first time, you will attain the essence of the wisdom of Heiho.

*Ed. Note, awesome stuff
