I hate you, Anonymous

And I hate your childlike, naive, knee-jerk response to the world around you.

Yesterday, on Wednesday, the Internet stood up as a unified whole to deliver with authority the message that PIPA and SOPA must be stopped. The Internet dealt a strong blow in our favor, towards the defense of free speech. Our voices were heard, our voices shook the earth, and even before the bills have a chance to enter debate, we are already seeing a positive impact of our protest.

The next day, today, the DoJ went and took down Megaupload.

And within hours, legions of Anonymous morons, angry that one of their larger porno sources was knocked out, launched their oh-so-predictable response, and began to DDoS everything in sight.

And this is EXACTLY what the DoJ, RIAA, MPAA, and everyone else who stands opposed to a free Internet wanted.

The takedown of Megaupload isn't just a wild coincidence, it's a timed, precision strike by those enemies of free speech. We are in the midst of a war for our very survival. You can bet your damn ass that these DDoS attacks, which cause no real lasting damage but can easily be drummed up as some sort of hacker threat that endangers the whole country, are going to be used as ammunition in the debates which are just days away.

A bunch of idiotic script kiddies throwing a temper tantrum over the loss of a porn hub has now seriously dampened the volume of our cries against SOPA/PIPA. You gave the RIAA, MPAA, and the DoJ something which they could not give themselves, and you handed it to them on a silver !@#$ing platter.

So thanks a lot. !@#$ing idiots.

Many game modders lost there backups and main way to distribute the stuff. You are like he morons that claim that YouTube is about uploading illegal content while the majority is in fact legal.

Someone sounds angry.

And if you think Megaupload was for only porn, then I'm afraid you've only just searched for porn on the site: there was plenty of music and TV shows on the site (and it's sister website Megavideo) that were quite readily accessible and convenient. It's a mighty shame that this did end up happening.

This blog is not about Megaupload. I am not !@#$ting on Megaupload, because Megaupload did nothing wrong, and they are an innocent victim in a larger fight.

This blog is about Anonymous undermining Wednesday's protest.

Really wish people would bother to read. It's not that difficult. If you're stuck on a word, look it up, ask someone, or use context clues to infer it's meaning.

I think the federal prosecutors shot themselves in the foot my taking down a site the day after the worlds attention was drawn to it.

It shows two things.

1-what can be lost by removing all content from a site, so IP infringing and non-infringing vanishing together

2-Demonstrating that there are already powers in place for law enforcement agencies to act (across half the world, the arrests were in New Zealand), so why do we need new laws?

boo hoo boo hoo.

Some parts of the internet prefer to use peaceful tactics. Other parts prefer to use hostile tactics. Anonymous's attacks use the basic mechanics of the internet and exploit computing ability. Beyond waiting for advances in technology, theres not a damn thing that anybody is going to be able to do about things like this, so people will !@#$%* and moan and try to find those responsible, but more will just take their place.

Your hatred is misdirected and megaupload had a lot more content than just porn like you suggest. Good on anonymous for standing up against it when the government decides to censor the internet, no matter what site it is.

If you really think the protest wed. did much you are blind. The protest didnt not change the minds of politicians, it didnt open minds, no, the congressmen realized they would no longer be able to get away with murder without the people knowing, so they switched sides to save their ass. They'll just slip it into next years National Defense Authorization Act, since people blindly let that pass

The general public isn't going to understand what happened to that site as they don't understand, so the government can't use that in their favor because a lot of people don't understand it.

Unless they say "It was an enemy of America".

Which is what they will say.

The government will say the following:

"Megaupload was a major hub of illegal downloads, hacker tools, computer viruses, and child porn"

"We took down Megaupload to protect America"

"A number of hackers viciously hacked into and disabled government infrastructure in retaliation to us dismantling one of their central sites of organization. These hackers are a threat to the security and lives of all Americans and must be stopped. SOPA and PIPA must be passed."

And the general public, in their infinite idiocy, will believe every word.

PS: SOPA is a distraction and was never intended to pass. Watch PIPA.

I'm... ugh... in agreement with HoT. The LOIC strikes do nothing but stir up opposition and make free-net activists look like children. It's the online equivalent of pissing on the steps of the Capitol while yelling "YEAH, FIGHT DA POWAH" before the police drag you away.

Close yes. Key here is not only do most not understand most dont care. Apathy always wins.

Exactly. My mod development team lost a whole ton of backups and data files, as well as most of our shared templates, due to the seizure of their servers. I highly doubt we will ever see these files again.

We're looking at alternative ways now to transfer files, hopefully mediafire does not go down or we will be down to a single mirror.

While we do have other methods of distributing files, we have a good number of links to fix, remove, and update.

I really, really don't have sympathy for people who lost anything more than a tool of convenience. Make local backups next time.

As much as Megaupload should not have been victimized like this, it's your own fault for not taking better care of your important data.

We had backups, just a pain in the arse to re-mirror all our files is all.

I absolutely hate phrases like "enemies of free speech". Nobody cares about bringing down free speech. It's not designed as a method to silence political opponents, because !@#$ like that backfires in politics (unless your law team is as good as Apple's). It's all about money. Or rather finding excuses to your stockholders on why the industry is shrinking, despite !@#$%^&* like entertainment being a "recession-proof industry". If you appear to be fighting piracy, at least you're doing your job. If senators pass bills on random !@#$ that people don't like, they appear to be doing their job. That's why so many senators flipped sides after the Wikipedia protest.

But, you're right about Anonymous. They're a group of thugs who are used to using their numbers to get what they want. They pull tantrums over little things that challenge their ego. To the general Internet semi-literates who run countries, 4chan is no different than Myspace. I'm a fan of violence (or rather damage of property) as a last resort.. it hurts any chances of solving a problem diplomatically.

Politicians aren't going to be doing the censoring. They're handing that authority over to the giant media corporations. Because the media is putting enough money in their pockets.
