An Apology

So, a few days ago, I was editing my nation bio, and noticed that it mentioned an old friend, Kittyquel. So, I decided to stop by her nation and say hi. When I got to her nation, I decided that instead of a boring old PM, I would send her something nice and fun: A spy attack. Nothing malicious, just some friendly little religious propaganda that doesn't do anything because of her Great Monument. The odds of success were 50%, and surprise, surprise, I got caught. Whatever, I thought, it's just a little joke between old friends. Stuff I've done before. So off I go to bed. The next day, I come home from work and find many messages in my inbox. So I go on IRC and attempt to explain that it doesn't mean anything, that Kitti and I go way back. An apology and a pretzel were all that were requested of me.

Now, I can be a considerate, diplomatic person when I believe that it is needed, but as I did not believe it was a major event, I was not on my best behavior. I was not intentionally trying to be rude, but with my charming (Note: sarcasm!) nature and lack of concern, I most likely appeared as such to my superiors. Kitti did not appear to be concerned by my spy attack, and I mistakenly believed that FAN was not, either. So, I wrote a shoddy, informal "apology". As I was writing it, I was messaged by multiple people from the Spartan government. I do not like being harassed to do things I am already doing, and I did not believe that this was being considered a significant event by anyone. So, I decided to send the apology, but not send a copy to the Spartan government (Note: I didn't send a copy to FAN, but only because the IRC nick of the person to whom I was supposed to send the copy did not match his nation or ruler), to give them a hard time for their giving me a hard time. This was an incredibly stupid, disrespectful act. These people work hard at keeping the peace and helping our nations grow. If one or two people arrive late to an event and want to make sure that has not gotten out of hand, the least I could have done was say "Yes, I'm doing it right now." The stress I had inadvertently given these people, did not need to be augmented by deliberate disobedience and disrespect.

To the government of Sparta: For this I am truly sorry. I let my carefree forum identity into said public view, where words must be chosen with care. After my long hiatus from public life, I seem to have lost that skill to choose. Again, I am sorry for being so rude and inconsiderate. So sorry, in fact, that I could not sleep, and had to come to my computer at 1:30 AM, over an hour after I should have been in bed, to type this message. And make1 that graphic.

To the government of FAN: I've never had any dealings with your alliance, and therefore there were no grudges between us. There was no way for you to have known that the attack was not malicious, and an attack from out of the blue always gets people worked up. I should have remembered this from the time long ago when I was in government myself2. But as I said above, I have gotten a bit rusty in my break. I did not treat this event with the seriousness it deserves, and I will try to do better in the future, whether it be in dealing with your alliance or any other. I am sorry for the agitation I must have caused, and that my wake-up3 call had to come at your expense.

To Kitti: If I have grossly misinterpreted our friendship and have offended you, I am deeply sorry. Friendship is what gives this game its value, and I do not want to have wasted it on some stupid joke. Also, here's the pretzel I owe you:

big-pretzel-baked-concession-food.jpg

I've spent about 45 minutes writing and editing, but as it's nearly 2:30 AM, please excuse any grammatical errors or poorly flowing thoughts.

Humor doesn't go well in serious matters. It's down here at the bottom so as not to ruin the mood.

1Go ask Google. I totally made it.

2Believe it or not, it's true!

3Oh the irony! (See end of apology to Sparta)

tl;dr Holy $%&@ I'm a moron. Sorry, guys.

That was a stupid thing to do, but everyone makes mistakes, right?

Its so good you realized your mistake...

i for one, would like to see you back in Sparta, hope you can control this 'habit' of yours in the future, even in the forum... :)

I've already locked myself up and et the key. Although I don't know if I can control making fun of you guys. It's just too tempting.

Also grrr, the image looks like I forgot to cut out the right hole of the pretzel, even though I did.

Friends must be the word most thrown around in CN. We are all in different alliances in a war/political simulation. There are no friends just enemies, allies and potential allies, potential enemies. Even leaders of sanctioned alliances are prone to the friends disease. Lots of people let this friend’s sickness influence their decisions like school yard children. Dont beat yourself up about it many leaders have taken their alliance to war against normal conventions for the childish notion of friendship, the kind of friendship that wasnt worth publicly telling people about in the form of a treaty. Nothing makes me laugh as much as an alliance with multiple treaties going to war for a friend thy didnt want to sign a treaty with. Play the game people. There are no friends outside your own alliance only just enemies, allies and potential allies, potential enemies.

Alterego, i have a question for you, what are we playing this game for then?

Well Im not playing to make "friends". That would be one step away from a mail order bride, having an internet gf or marrying someone on death row. Real friendship takes years to build and is built on real stuff not standing firm together in the onslaught a fake group of nations in an internet game or irc chit chat. It usually means you have met the person at least once. If players really believe people they dont know and perhaps never met are their friends they dont know the meaning of the word or have never had real friends.

To answer your question. Why am I playing? I am playing for the same reason I play any computer game. From streets of rage to grand theft auto. Its a way to have a bit of fun. I like to crap post and blow stuff up others like to organise and lead while some like the stat building process. The problem is people spend so much time immersed in this fake world they become convinced they are friends with people they never met and really dont know. I have alliance comrades they are as real as my AA. I have allies they are as real as my treaty. I have enemies, they can become my allies at the flick of a switch. My most hated enemy can become an ally I respect in the time it takes to post a treaty.

I have friends in the real world. People I have known a long time. People who I have shared real experiences with, who I know understand and respect. In here there are just other players. No amount of irc chat or PMs could make us friends because its not real and any friendship based on a relationship formed in a computer game is suspect IMO.

I didnt play football to make friends, I like football. I didnt do kickboxing, karate, bujinkan, muay thai to make friends I enjoyed the pastimes. I dont play computer games to make friends, its just a bit of fun. I dont work to make friends I work for money. Any friend I have I made along the way. I didnt go looking for them. They are an extension of my family, an adopted brother. Someone I would do anything for no questions asked. It takes more than standing up to [insert alliance] with me and chatting on irc to get there. If people played this as the game it is and stopped being fanatical there would be zero OOC stuff. People would be players and the friends disease would go away and take its OOC cousin with it.

Its a sign of the times. Everything is instant and disposable. Including "friends".

See, this is why my favorite expression when someone challenges me is "suck my left one." (stolen, not original)

Feel free to borrow and use it as appropriate. The best part is that the "one" isn't specified, so it can be used by men and women, boys and girls alike.

Between friends or not, you should have had second thoughts about spying on a FAN member. It just isn't one of those things you do. I don't know if the situation was resolved or not but I hope it was. You'll know better next time, eh? :v:

Well, at least we all learned one thing here today. Alterego has no friends in CN. Shocker.

Wow, you missed the entire point of his post. If you've spent your time playing any multiplayer game it's plainly observable that relationships built on it are ephemeral, it's like trading friendly banter with a person on the streets you'll never see again. His post is actually quite insightful.

His points were OOC and they had merit - I don't say I agree with them but they were definitely not stupid - and you replied with an OOC personal mockery.

Were you someone else I wouldn't have minded, but as I know you're worth respect I thought to write these lines to try help you think about that.

(Sorry for having made it public, I have the bad tendency to be didactic "at large": apologies.)

I have built relationships with multiple people in this game that have extended into the real world, even after the other people have quit the game.
