Times Have Changed

I remember outpouring of support for a girl who had cancer 2 years ago, people flooded the alliance's forums, regardless of political alliance affiliation. She was struggling to live and was only 14 and played CN to keep ongoing.

I remember when Denzin died, even people who weren't that fond of his IC personality still mourned the loss.

For the mentality back then was it didn't matter if you were odds in politics, that RL is RL and there was a boundary.

Yet today, I see some support but it seems people have decided to confuse the boundary and we are no longer the community we once were. Politics change, but the fact that one can be distasteful towards a member of the community, regardless of sides, when RL tragedy strikes makes me wonder what road this place is on.

No, I am not saying be nice to their IC character or treat them differently because of their RL situation. I am saying, leave RL where it belongs and leave politics where they belong.

It does not matter who you are, what political alliance affiliation you are. The fact that anyone would make a joke about someone's RL when tragedy hit, what if the situation was reversed? What if it was you?

That is when the excuse "I am just playing a persona" ends and you cross lines that should not be crossed. Let's learn to remember this again. I am not saying you need to be weepy or sympathetic but snarky remarks involving RL are not needed. That is a road and a path I would rather not see us as an entirety walk.

There is a boundary, find it again.

I agree but keep in mind that those who intend to capitalize on justified anger over an RL issue to make CN gains are just as deplorable if not worse than those at fault for an RL issue in the first place.

The main concern here, I think, is to address folks whipping up IC conflict into justifying RL potshots at folks for concerns. The intent seems more just 'step back and have some sympathy when it happens'--basically, the reverse of what you're talking about.

The other thing is that using RL issues as a reason to attack is already frowned on; that argument's closed, as far as I can tell. This is just reminding folks to respect that barrier going the other way.

I remember her, I really hope she's okay.

There were people on IRC, while I was at work, the day the Egyptian protests kicked off and the government shut down internet hoping I was amidst the rioting in Egypt so they wouldn't have to deal with my postings on here. Why would you wish anyone harm outside the confines of the game? I don't get it. Stuff like that really does make wonder if it's even worth it anymore harming someone's integrity and dignity.

Good blog Mia.

This Legion nation is a memorial, heh.

writing a blog about it won't change anything. I dunno what set off this particular post lamenting the death of a sense of decency that has never existed, but it's part of the game.

That's not to say it should be, but to pretend CN has been a snow white community up until recently is a joke.

Quite a lot of the lack of support is probably because a lot of people don't know what you're talking about. I guess this was one of those IRC only things that most people never saw.
