Far From The Tree

Her father campaigned in 2004 on a largely culturally conservative platform. Seven years later, Barbara Bush, daughter of former president George W. Bush, has joined the likes of Meghan McCain, daughter of Arizona Senator (and two-time presidential candidate) John McCain. Both ladies are daughters of high profile social conservatives who have seen past the homophobia of their fathers to come out publicly in favour of marriage equality.

In a video posted on YouTube by the Human Rights Campaign, she stated, "I am Barbara Bush, and I am a New Yorker for marriage equality...New York is about fairness and equality. And everyone should have the right to marry the person that they love."

I think that both incidents, both Barbara Bush and Meghan McCain, really goes to show how much this whole homophobia thing is generational. If these two ladies can be raised by those two men and still be fair-minded, then maybe there is some hope after all.

If you ask me, marriage equality is inevitable.

But maybe I'm just an optimist.

There are a few things that seem this way (e.g. legalization of Marijuana, same-sex marriages)

I just hope the inevitable happens sooner rather than later.

Gay marriage will lead to gay divorce. I am opposed to any relationship status that has to be recognised by a government. All marriage should be consigned to history where it belongs. The idea you need the law or the government approve your relationship or break up is not something that belongs in a free and open modern society. Adults can decide who they pair off with, they don’t need the law and for how long, the government or a religious organisations approval.

so, alterego, what do you do about situations such as immigration and whether someone can bring their loved one into the country? Or, for that matter, what do you do about making a delinquent parent support their abandoned partner and child?

There's also the issue of when one of the two gets into a major accident, Alterego. Only relatives are allowed in some of those situations. To have your wife/husband not allowed because civil marriage registrations don't exist anymore would be one of the large downsides of your proposal.

Lamuella and Andy P. pretty much hit the nail on the head.

I heard a story where one partner was literally on her deathbed and the other partner was not allowed to be with her. Even though with this particular situation, hospitals have been instructed to not do this sort of thing there are a lot of rights at the federal level (over 1,000) that go along with a government sanctioned marriage. They are largely what the whole marriage equality fight is about.

Marriage solves this because? Last time I checked unmarried Fathers/mothers have to pay to bring up their child just like married ones. If a country wants to let someone live there and they want to bring their partner they can decide to let them in or decide not to let them in. Its no different to finding out if its a sham marriage/relationship. eg: are they living together, how long, joint bank accounts, holidays together, photos over the years etc its easy enough to verifiy.

How many vegas weddings are there every year between almost total strangers?

Average number of Vegas weddings per day 315 Im sure all loving couples in long term relationships.

Get rid of marriage and you get rid of stupid rules about who can and cant see you after an accident.

I.C.E like on your mobile phone. In Case of Emergency - you can appoint your own next of kin. I have I.C.E on my mobile. If I get into an accident thats who they (police)call. He/she doesnt have to be a family member, common sense is used. Plenty of families hate one another its silly they can see you but your partner cant. Its red tape gone stupid.

I'm an incurable self confessed pessimist and I share the viewpoint :v

Equality, as such, is more or less synonymous with progress. A society held back by irrational prejudices and inequalities supported by the state has no ability to move forward; it can only devolve.
