iPad - What is it good for?

So after my last entry here, which dealt with getting a new phone (I ended up getting a Droid), I am now thinking about getting an iPad.

But is this thing really worth buying? What can I do on it that I can't do on my phone? Is it just another useless toy? It would be larger/better for, say, reading...but other than that?

If you already have a Droid, then I would recommend an Android tablet, as you might be used to the interface. (But you'll have to wait till 2011 to get the really decent ones)

Or just get a touch screen computer, like Ironfist said.

The iPad is something I view as completely useless if you already have a laptop and/or smartphone. It's a fanboi badge.

If it's your money, bank it. Ask yourself what you're going to be doing with it.

It's good for

. :v:

But seriously, it's a big iPod; if you like an iPod, you'll like the iPad, if you don't, you won't. It's for content consumption, not content creation, so if you plan for it to be useful for more than reading and gaming, don't buy it.

My family has two iPads with a few specialist apps to help my autistic brothers with communication.

From my own use of them, I don't think they're worth buying unless you can think of a specific reason for using it that can't be filled by something better. The main reason that springs to mind is travelling a lot and not wanting to bring along laptops.

It's very personalised though, I don't think you can use blanket advice from other people on whether to buy it or not.

Sounds a lot like people aren't too excited about the iPad. At any rate I think it might be a good idea to wait for a nice Android Tablet then.

I do quite a lot of traveling. But I've never had any problems bringing my laptop with me.

This is indeed a fair point.

From what I hear, the Nook makes for a good tablet once rooted.

I've had one that work bought for me, for about 5 or 6 months. I use it for Netflix and fantasy football.

That's it. I use my laptop for everything else still. Not worth the money if you have to buy it yourself.

I got one for Christmas and am currently setting it up. I'll let you know what I think.

As i said, do not buy it. Having one gifted to you however is alright specially so if you cant control what someone gifts you.

So I am using an iPad right now and just got it for Christmas. in my opinion it is pretty useful to have lying next to you if you want to check something or keep your reading material on it. It also doubles as an mp 3 player. it's web browsing is better than the iPhone but it's harder to type than on a laptop. So at the end of the day it's really about if you have the extra cash and want a cool toy/ e reader.

Interesting. Do you have the 3G version? Curious about how well that works on it.

I've had a Netbook for over a year now. I installed Linux on it (Ubuntu Netbook version) and use it exclusively for Web surfing, reading e-books, and writing various documents like articles, reviews, etc. My Netbook has an 8GB SSD, which probably doesn't seem like much. However, it's fine for my purposes. I also have two 8GB flash drives.

It's small, it's light, it's handy to have at airports and other places with free WiFi....and it cost me a whopping $199. Can't go wrong there.
