Government members represent their respective alliances, although sometimes people forget this.

However....

Sometimes people think they're being 'funny', forgetting that things such as tone make sarcasm readily apparent in live conversation and almost impossible to pick up over the Internet.

Everyone is government in CN. Doesn't matter what position you actually hold in a particular alliance, people often take what is said by anyone wearing a certain AA and hold it against that alliance whether it is on IRC or the forums. Is it right? No. But people need a reason to hate something and they'll go to extreme lengths to get those reasons.

And to answer the first part, that honestly depends. If they're just a Minister or below I wouldn't sweat it. However if you pissed off the top leadership then you should begin to take that seriously.

who actually threatens people for not using a tag?

Gov tend to not wear tags. Newer members do because it gives them a sense of inclusion.

Real people don't have tags. But seriously, you all represent your respective alliance, doesn't matter what rank you are. However being a different rank has a profound decision on how the punishment takes place. I.e. if you are Trium you are usually either ZIed and/or banned from your alliance for committing a crime or your alliance goes to war. But if you are a member, you are just ZIed.
