GOON Tears: The story of salithus

Sardonic

I never trusted salithus.

Of course, coming from the person wronged, that kind of statement can oftentimes be a lie, that the person saying it had no idea it was coming.

This was not the case.

salithus and I had a very troubled history. I knew that one day something like this would happen. When this finally went down, I was well prepared. Or at least as well-prepared as I could be, given the circumstances. I spent many days in the office where I work running through the various scenarios in my mind. I thought about it constantly, I was obsessed. It kept me up at night. I knew the rubber was going to hit the road, and soon.

This log is from a few days before the incident:

[21:41] <salithus> you're afraid to push the envelope

[21:41] <salithus> but my boss's boss does the same thing

[21:41] <salithus> too many years spent in a position where you couldn't without being fired (or losing infra)

[21:41] <Sardonic> What do you mean by pushing the envelope on the macro level?

[21:42] <salithus> to take any sort of risk

[21:42] <salithus> you always default to playing it safe

[21:42] <salithus> never aggressive

[21:42] <Sardonic> Well I wouldn't say always

[21:44] <Sardonic> So what kinds of things would you like to me to do differntly?

[21:45] <salithus> nothing in the role of Pilot

[21:45] <salithus> but I'm contemplating (for that reorg I mentioned) splitting out the Secretariat role

[21:45] <salithus> into areas that focus on:

[21:45] <salithus> 1) Creating new relationships.

[21:46] <salithus> 2) Handling treaties (negotiating/writing/periodic review/incident handling)

[21:46] <salithus> 3) Incident handling for non-treaty incidents.

[21:46] <salithus> you'd head up #1

[21:46] <Sardonic> ah

[21:47] <salithus> doesn't mean everyone you talk to we'd have to treaty with

salithus never respected me. He overreached his authority constantly because he knew that the boards were his. The above was during a time when he decided he didn't like the way government was organized, so he started a reorganization. Of course, as Stategos he did not have the power to reorganize government, but that didn't really matter to him. He wanted me out of Pilot, and into a position with exactly 1/3 the power of secretariat. If he had done this without anyone's approval, and remasked himself as Pilot, that would be my signal to rehost the forums elsewhere and declare him a traitor.

That is how I expected this to go down, that is what I had prepared all my forums posts/mass messages/etc for.

That is not what happened.

During the 'reorg' he removed everybody's admin rights to the forum but his, only restoring a few bits, but not the whole. Fortunately I saved my database copy before he did this. The other point at which I knew a coup was imminent would be if he refused to give me back my admin rights, which he had been extremely slow at. There is no excuse, it was the checking of a box, and I should have been the first person's access he fixed. I was going to set a deadline yesterday that if he passed I would declare him in dereliction of his duty and start the moving process, but that didn't happen either.

Instead, my good friend the co-pilot gave me the admin rights back and apparently got into an argument with salithus which hurt salithus' feelings so much, he took his ball and went home.

As far as I'm concerned there was no good reason for him to do this. Regardless of how it happened we are stronger for it. His cancerous presence in the alliance had been a thorn in my side for a long time, even from before CN. He was never satisfied with my decisions, and started fights for the pure fun of it in IRC.

And now we are rid of him, we are finally free.

Edit: Mentioning other games is bad. - Revan

goonbase is gone. You can thank your amazing leadership in the Pilot and CoPilot positions. Short version is I'm not going to spend my free time listening to cheap shots taken at my wife and getting accused of trying to stage a coup for not getting things done in a browser game fast enough for them. Hasta.

Forum admins (especially those with root access) don't get the "right" to kill a forum simply because they are pissed off enough to quit. First rule of forum administration: "do not harm" (rule 1a - if you broke it, fix it ASAP, anything else just took a backseat). So I will not excuse salithus' behavior in that regard.

However, clearly there is more to story than someone maybe plotting a coup. Perhaps one day we'll hear it.

FYI for those who never played Lunar Wars: GOONS leadership there, particularly in Round 2, changed hands pretty regularly, but I don't recall any coups, at least none that were made public. So in light of that, the IRC snippet above doesn't sound all that damning to me, since presumably there would be conversations between government members regarding government reorganization and changes of leadership on a routine basis.

But hey, salithus got at least one thing right...it is just a browser-based game. Perspective FTW.

*Mr. O squats down, adjusting his explorer hat and preparing the specimen cup, speaking ever so softly into the microphone*

"Ah, yes, the ever elusive, and quite rare, GOON tear. This marvelous find is really quite the highlight of our trip here. They say it can only be harvested from GOONs who have consumed over 100,000 regular tears, a pure concentrated extraction. One drop is 1000x sweeter than moonsugar. One taste will make a strong man capable of throwing a bus, and a weak man, on a single taste, crap his spine straight into his trousers. Careful now, even a sniff will cause a woman to shred her clothes in a demonic lustfest, and it'll turn children into wild fruitbeasts of the night. Yes, yes, the museum will appreciate this find."

*Mr. O screws the lid back onto the specimen cup, beckons the cameraman to follow him, and makes his way deeper into the jungles of CN*.

Jokes aside, that sucks. Thankfully you had the keen presence of mind to prepare for such treachery. Good luck moving forward.

Haha....well done, Kzopp.

Mr. Damsky, there was no reason not to trust him. For that reason, I traded my Strategos position for his Secretariat position. I've taken Strategos back again.

I wouldn't take Salithus for his word on that, Uralica. Usually when someone is beaten they will look for any excuse that they can find, fabricate or exaggerate to attempt to help them dig themselves out of the tight spot they fell into. (i.e: TBB)

However I don't know anymore than you and the rest of the bystanders on the OWF so I can't be certain. But I can be sure of it.

And then again.. maybe not.

The more you guys try to cover it up and say, "don't look into it, it's not a big deal" the more it looks like you folks are hiding something. I'll reserve judgment, though I'm fairly certain mine doesn't mean anything, but I ask everyone else to wait until more of the story is divulged. So quickly we've written things off as certainties only for it to come back and bite us.

If you want to don your tinfoil hats, go ahead. I'm pretty sure GOONS doesn't care. The fact that they've even bothered to waste their time explaining their internal politics to outsiders at all, even the most minute details, is nothing short of courtesy. They didn't have to say anything at all, but in an attempt to do so I suppose they felt they could curb some of these hair-brained accusations like what you hint at in your comment, even if they couldn't prevent it.

If speculating is what you enjoy doing the most, then perhaps you ought to speculate how much less stupid you would sound if you never said anything at all.

Actually, GOONS did touch on this somewhat on OWF in response to my post there. I have to wonder if sal will try posting a rebuttal to that in the thread. Either way, it really wasn't much of an excuse for taking the forum down. But, this is CN. I've seen forums DDoSed for less. (Ionizer did this to Macedonia because they cut him loose after he attacked my then-alliance mate Giant Jellyfish in CCC after I had just started playing. Imagine housing two alliances on one forum :P)

And please, call me Jarkko. :)

So if you feel they didn't have to say anything and it was done out of courtesy then why divulge the information? There had to be some motive behind it. To say we have to take everything at face value from people who associate with people such as yourself is laughable. How do we know what was said to salithus? We don't, we only have one side of the story to base this off of. If it really is hurt feelings than okay, but perhaps there's something more to it. It's not like this story is going to come from GOONS nor do I expect it to. So I'll sit and wait to see if salithus actually speaks up.

Remember the incident with the Earth Directorate and how quickly everyone wrote them off? There are two sides to every story. Just because you close your mind so quickly to one story doesn't mean it doesn't contain truth behind it.

We explained the situation so some halfwit wouldn't arbitrarily happen upon cn.goonbase.com, see Salithus' lovely message, and come back here and go OH MY GOD GOONS HAVE BEEN HIT BECAUSE THEY INSULTED SOMEONE HAHA THEY SUCK SO BAD. Instead, we did the right thing (or rather, our higher ups did; I, myself, had nothing to do with it).

We moved to a different forum site. We uploaded our back up data. And then we came here to head off any speculations by explaining the situation to the best of our ability.

Even if we had insulted Salithus (which we did not, I'm just saying this hypothetically), is it likely we would come here and say "We were jerks and got what was coming to us"? No, of course not, who would EVER do that? That'd just be weirdly honest. But truthfully, do you honestly believe we could possibly piss someone off (A higher up no less, and even someone whom the majority of us didn't know he HAD a wife, let alone what her size was, etc.) so much that shutting down our entire forums permanately ("taking their ball and going home) could even KIND OF be seen as a mature solution? Because, sir, if you honestly do think that, then you are the proud owner of a VERY stretched definition of equal retaliation.

I never once justified his actions, did I? I said maybe you did say something about his wife that really upset him. You admitted yourself you're not privy to any information so how do you know? How do I know? We don't. I'm saying maybe there is something not being said or is being hid or has yet to be told or said. That's all. Of course you and Emperor Marx got so upset over it you couldn't even prepare a coherent argument.

Btw I like your avatar :P

Hey guys, y'know I'm just sayin, but none of us were actually there for the moon landing, so how do we know that's actually what happened? I mean, that's what we were told happened, but there might be more to that story. It obviously won't come from NASA though.

For the record, I don't totally believe in the moon landing :P. I'm not a conspiracy theorist, mind - that extra crap like THEY KILLED PEOPLE TO SHUT THEM UP is just retarded. I just think it would've been a major problem if we HADN'T landed on the moon by 1970; cold war could've gone much differently.

That said, I also don't really care either way, so I don't waste time pursuing this knowledge lol.
