A while back, I did some hunting around and compiled a list of the longest consecutively serving leaders still in office. It just occurred to me that grahamkeatley was #1 on the list. I thought I'd update it, unfortunately, I can't find the file that I saved it in, so I'll put down what I remember and look up the dates. If you know of someone I've forgotten or someone who would roughly be next down on the list, let me know. It'll be a lot easier if I just ask everybody since there are some long-
This wasn't a doorstopper in length so I finished it fairly quickly.
The set up focuses on an up and coming agent in Hollywood. After closing a multimillion dollar deal for one of his clients, he is called up to the office of the CEO, a legend in the entertainment industry. There, he is introduced to a blobby alien whose native language consists of rather terrible smells. After having watched several decades of television broadcast into space, and considering their appearance, the aliens decid
No, this isn't about CN going the way of the dodo. I've decided to write entries for the books I read as I finish them and I just completed Alastair Reynolds' latest book. Spoilers may sometimes ensue but I'll attempt to avoid anything big or especially plot relevant and mark the more egregious examples. Now on to the book.
For those who don't know don't know, Alastair Reynolds is an incredible author of space opera trending hard towards, well, hard science fiction. I highly recommend his Revel
Well, I didn't have as much time to post event-by-event updates this past weekend as I thought I might, so I'll just do an overall recap of the events of yesterday and today a year ago.
April 19th, 2009 was a Sunday. I'd been up pretty much continuously since Thursday by that point, and I was rnning on raw adrenaline. The weekend had been taken up with activity that revolved pretty much exclusively around the goal of keeping us from getting crushed. A good deal of time was spent discussing dipl
Right now, I'm posting up the announcement of our cancellation with TORN.
That OP was actually the end product of several hours of careful thought and a lot of waiting. As it says in the OP and in my last blog, I actually gave notice about six hours previous in private. At the time, there was very little information information released regarding what the CB was and most of it was fairly contradictory. That fact, extensive talks with OV at the time, the repeated rebuffing of offers of mediation
After quite a bit of work this morning attempting to find out what is going on, and a quick nap around 10 am, all I know is that TORN says they have a CB against OV the details of which aren't being released to anyone. Furthermore, all talks and attempts to provide mediation have been rebuffed with the statement that talks won't begin until an hour before update. At this point, we all assume that with half a dozen alliances in peace mode and no talks being done, that there's a high probably ther
One year ago at this moment I am frantically attempting to find out why a bunch of alliances like Valhalla and TPF had suddenly started dropping into peace mode around 9 pm. (I was just getting out of Psychology 101 at the time). Sometime in the next couple of hours, I'll find out that TORN claims to have a CB against Ordo Verde, though I won't be able to find out exactly what it is yet.
I think I'll keep updating this weekend as interesting things happen depending on how well my memory holds u
There are two simple rules that we learn very early as schoolchildern. First, everyone is entitled to their opinion. Second, opinions cannot be wrong. Unfortunately, this seems to be understood by many people to mean "Anything that I think is my opinion. This means nothing I say can be contradicted because opinions can't be wrong and any attempt to argue is depriving me of my right to an opinion." In practical terms, that means that many arguments look something like this:
You pronounce the 'g'

I'm transcribing my post here from the monster thread currently raging in Alliance Politics (I still can't called it Alliance Announcements, it's weird).
Sequence of the build up to the war from SF's perspective as presented in a rough amalgamation of faux conversations based on what was said at various points in our discussions:
Step 1:
"Grämlins is going to leave Q"
"What the $%&@ are they doing? Half of Q hates them, they're going to get rolled!"
"What the hell do we do?"
"We should
Probably one of the most publically visible issues in the current political climate is the attitude toward treaties that is held overwhelmingly by leadership in by far the vast majority of alliances. Essentially, current treaties are worthless in that it's very easy to get out of fulfilling them, and done intelligently, without even bringing down any particularly considerable sum of criticism. In point of fact, the only reason to have a treaty is to avoid being criticized for helping your friend
I have been playing this game for well over two and a half years. In that time, I have learned a considerable amount about leadership. The most surprising revelation for me personally is that I seem to have a knack for assessing people and their motives. I was never what you'd readily call an asocial outcast, but neither was I one to jump at the chance to socialize, so this particular talent pretty much hit me out of the blue. It's also proven remarkably helpful in playing what is primarily a so
Most people complain about the state of the current treaty web. For those of you living under a rock (although I don't know how you found this blog if you are) the current web could best be described as less of a web and more of a giant wad of twine. Essentially everyone with aspirations of political relevance is connected to it and most people are so tangled they can't seem to move. It has been charged for some time that this political landscape, such as it is, is stifling the game. I'm not goi
The following logs are based on True Events. This is entertainment speak for something that never actually happened, but doesn't break any known laws of physics and would sell better as a form of media if it had. Plus, it'd be totally awesome if it was real, so everyone should be able to pretend it is.

I've decided to make a weekly post relating my history in the game. It should be noted that weekly has been redefined to mean "whenever I feel like it." As a general disclaimer, I'm not bound by the laws of time and space, so if at any point the details of my story don't seem to mesh with your recollection of the order or details of events, it's because I altered history to fit what I remember, and you are now wrong.
I joined CN in the last week of July, just as the Great War was coming to a cl
You know what? $%&@ being politic. I put a great deal of consideration into how I should write this and what I should or shouldn't say. In the end though, this is my blog, so I'll express my opinion. If you don't like it, feel free to let the door hit you on the way out. I'll even give it a little shove to help you along. No sense in not being neighborly.
In Christianity, the creation myth states that God spoke and the world came into existence. Now, if it's true that mankind was created in
