The Problem with Global Despots

You know the problem with Global Despots these days is they have no style. They lack that certain element that makes them worthy of giving them any of my attention. Case in point: That Trotskie fellow of the ENNPEEOOO is probably one of the dullest global despots around. The best that fellow has is some lame brain thread about a rip off of Toy R' Us with a crappy looking flag. Share it around a bit and examine the leaders of most major alliances. They are just flat out boring. Say what you

To suggest or to not suggest...

Hello dear readers, this one will be a quick one - but with a request, a serious request. Over the last weeks and months I have noticed more and more people contacting me (via IRC, PM or even ingame) and sending me suggestions, concepts and idas. And then they asked me if I could not go suggesting them for them, because they felt that I somehow have magical influence on the admin, or that stuff just "looks better" just because I post it. That is not the case. Please stop doing it. At first:

Treaties and You: Don't let the treaty define the relationship

Treaties, the lifeblood of CN. Yet too many alliances let the treaty form dictate the relationship instead of dictating the relationship to the treaty. Huh? Here's what I mean: It appears that, for the most part, there are the following basic forms of treaties that I would say 90% of alliances use in pretty much the same basic format: PIAT ODP oMDoAP MDP MDoAP MDAP So what's wrong with the above? In my opinion, it tends to lead most alliances into basing their relationship with

The Codex

This week has seen an announcement which is both monumental and irrelevant: the public airing of the Grämlins Codex. It's irrelevant because it is nothing but a codification and publication of our principles – we have been living by these or something very close to them since at least the inauguration of Seria's government as members back in early 2007, and probably since foundation. We have demonstrated that in our disinclination to join many offensive operations – GW3, the Unjust War, and NPO

The Pres plays with the big red button

"Damn it McMasters! You've foiled me for the last time," shouts President Firestorm of Boomtown! "Oh please, your pumped up little pip squeak of a nation couldn't hope to even put a dent in the side of one of my school buses let alone conduct an armed war against us," returns Prime Minister Mulroney in a snide tone of voice. Firestorm quickly organizes his thoughts as he considers his options. He looks around the room as he examines the tense faces of his advisers. Here and there beads of swea

Intelligence? Is there a place for it in CN?

It seems every time I log onto the forums and check the OWF I see stupidity. And before I say anything else, it is coming from pretty much every place imaginable. People just new to the game, people who have been playing for years, and people who really just want attention all seem to act stupid on the forums. Whether it be some random post where the only thing you can say is 'Private Channels FTW', or some long 'essay' where some idiot attempts to act intelligent by putting large words together

Joined Zenith

Officially. They are awesome. I initially was going to travel to different alliances, stay with them for 2 weeks (don't worry, I wasn't going to scheme them out from their financial aid), learn how about the pros and cons of their systems, and move on. I was looking for a journalism experience. I had already stopped by the UPN, and had just registered on the Zenith forums with my proposal. I was accepted in...and blown away by their organization. Zenith is probably everything that I've w

Just some preliminary stuff

I've been toying around with an idea of writing my memoirs for quite awhile. Not that anyone would be interested in such a thing, but I thought it would be a fun closure to my time in government. I'll admit that at least IC, I've been a controversial character so perhaps someone would get a kick out of them or at least give them more anti-TPF/anti-Slayer flamebait. Of course, I'm sure some of you will regard someone's memoirs as self-indulgent pap and I couldn't begrudge you that sentimen

Cars are difficult

I'll explain that title a bit. I've been driving for a few months now. I'm able to drive my instructors Citroen C3 fairly well, and feeling confident went out for a drive with my dad in his Skoda Octavia, with its 1.9l TDI. Lets just say it didn't go to well. I must have stalled the stupid thing 10 times in the three miles. I spent most of the time struggling to come to terms with the way it accelerated harder without the accelerator pedal down than the C3 does with a fair amount of pressure

A PhD in CN?

I recently used CN as an example for my Games Studies course at University (yes, we played video games for credit!) that centered around Viral Marketing and the Experience Economy. Below is an edited extract with references removed. (Yes, my tutor, who has a PhD in gaming, actually read this.) Viral Marketing can be one of the most effective tools in creating brand awareness and sales for games. Viral Marketing can be a vital component and ideal “commodity” in an era of non-industrial productio

Day ?

I haven't been able to write for several days. A couple days back I got my wish, and we were deployed as security for the drones workers harvesting the oatmeal cream pie. Ant, it was beautiful. Anyway, there was word that the reds were in the area, and spiders, I was excited and scared. The pheromones from the workers and the soldiers was thick. One small spider tried to cross our path, but he was pushed back quiet easily. But then it all went horribly wrong. First it was like the night w

modliness is goodlinesss this season!

Happy Saturday, Cybernators! If you were to hazard a guess, which moderators would you think most active in any given specialty? Game modding, forum modding, signature & avatar maintenance, forum administration requests, answering questions, handling complaints & appeals in moderation, participating in policy discussions? And most importantly, just generally smacking down the bad guyz and helping to maintain a pleasant and safe environment for the rest of us angelic souls? I just c

The Wonder Discussion

Hello again, since there is a lot of discussion in the SuggestionBox going on regarding wonders, forced disbandment during war (peace terms) and the 30days-clock, here are some thoughts and a possible solution. At first: The current system is (imho) horrible. It is even a DETERRENT for new players to create nations here or keep playing the game. The same goes for people who have been forced to destroy wonders. Why that? Because right now the old nations have not only an advantage in size (that is j

New CN User-Interface (UI)

A big problem that Cybernations has is it's unappealing look. I showed the game to a teacher of mine and she commented on how overly official and bland it was -- the game came across as more of a business than an actual game. The fact is, as much as we pride ourselves as thinking there is serious business in Cybernations it still remains a game. Therefore I have come up with some ideas for a new format for the game. These changes improve the aesthetics as well as the functionality of the game.

Two for One: Meadows of Heaven (Pen), Morey 2k7 (VE)

Helping the Emperor move out of his palace into Ghostlin into a new palace, I thought I had my interviews pretty set up and ready to go. Oh f--k. He broke the china. Idiot. I made a mad phone call to my interviews, hoping we could do lunch and dinner in a nice restaurant in Ghostlin that specializes in Italian cuisine, then I charged the tickets and the bill to the emperor's exp--personal credit card, of course. My first interview was with a government member of a recently created confederation

Tiles in Cybernations

This idea is partially inspired by SimCity. The basic notion of this idea is that your nation is organized by tiles. 1 Tile "cost" 10 infrastructure and 20 units of land, in the initial idea, it will most likely change. For every 10 levels of infrastructure and 20 miles of land you unlock 1 Tile. Tiles are used to designate zones and buildings. There are industrial zones, agrarian zones, commercial zones, and residential zones. Zones are initially free. Agrarian zones reduce infrastructure co

My Rant on Charters

The bad news: Some people don't know how to write a good charter. The good news: CN is virtually a free-market for alliances, so the incompetent leaders will get weeded out. Charters, at their core, are rulebooks. They should describe how the alliance is run. They don't need to be fancy. They don't need to as dry as a desert (few people take this extreme. I'm one of them). However, there is some very basic stuff that should be included in a charter. How the alliance is run. Leaders?

Introduction to me.

Greetings CyberNations! Many of you may know me from this thread during my nooby days. Since then I have grown up, I recently refounded the UA but then I went through an attempted coup on me, of which they failed, but my 'reputation' was scarred. I am 15 years old and live and attend school in Enlgand in the UK. As for my CN life, I shall sum it up below: Recruited straight into HotU at the start of the game Declared war as soon as I could on a guy called sts900 Ended up somehow making an a
