Mara Lithaen
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma - The former Oklahoma State Capitol has completed its renovation as the new Capitol of the Plains Federation, with much of the old, now-useless equipment moved out and the wiring runs and electrical appliances repaired or replaced. State lawmakers have been moved down the road to a new Legislatural building, opening the State Senate and House of Representatives areas for national use. The first elections are expected to occur within the year. Edited January 19, 2015 by Mara Lithaen

Mara Lithaen
Sea-Launch Platform Horizon, Houston, TX - The Plains Federation makes its first tentative steps back into space with the launch of the RX-1 test rocket in Houston Harbor. The rocket reached the mission specification of 2 miles altitude before the liquid-fueled engine cut out and the rocket returned to the sea via parachute, where it was later picked up by the Navy ship LCS-2 Decatur. Further launches are expected to occur in the next several months as the RX-1's designers refine their designs and test rocket's overall performance as much as they possibly can. PresidentDavid
Anthony Sparks Sworn in as Governor of Texas Amarillo Republican becomes the first head of state for the State of Texas. Governor's Mansion in Austin. Balloons filled the skies like bluebonnets fill the fields of the State Sparks now leads. Republicans celebrated gaining another governorship in the Federation and Texans would finally be able to claim a someone as their own regional leader. After winning sixty-five percent of the Texas vote, Sparks addressed a group of his supporters outside of his home in Amarillo where he expressed his gratitude for being elected governor. He also added that he intends to take funding for public education and updating public infrastructure head on. "The Lone Star State is a big Republic," Sparks said. "We can afford to give our children stellar education and keep our structures standing tall and proud. I look forward to working with the congress to achieve these goals for our great State." Then Governor-Elect Sparks got on a plane and flew to Austin with an escort from the Air National Guard. This morning he was sworn in and is reportedly "catching up on some shut eye" according to his campaign manager. The governor is expected to meet with congressional leaders, however he may put that off until the Lieutenant Governor is elected. The election was close, between two conservatives who nearly split Harris County right down the middle. Three recounts have been called in three different counties but official results are expected to come later this afternoon. The position is Lieutenant Governor is vital to the Texas legislative system. The LG is the President of the Texas Senate and has an ample amount of power in regards to what bills are put up to vote and who may debate. Depending on who wins, it will surely make a big difference in what the Governor will be able to accomplish legislatively. The Governor's Office released a press report stating that the Governor would be forming his cabinet over the next few days but was "looking forward" to the election results of the Lieutenant Governor and the opening of Congress. Mara Lithaen
BREAKING: Bandit Raids Prompt Army Retribution Wichita, KS: After the fiasco two months ago involving corrupt National Guard leaders being bribed to turn a blind eye to a large bandit force operating in southern Missouri lead to the sacking of Wichita, a massive investigation was launched by the Army's CID to determine those responsible for the mishandling of the bandit raid. Their investigation turned up links between the bandit force and National Guard Colonel Eugene Sullivan and his staff, who were taking kickbacks in valuable metals salvaged from sacked towns across the border in exchange for allowing bandits to use Guard fuel and ammunition stores to replenish their fuels and exhaustible munitions. In response, the National Guard has arrested Sullivan on charges of high treason. Twelve hours ago, however, a botched bandit raid made by the same group was aimed at the west side of Wichita, in an attempt to finish the job the group began two months before. This time, however, Brigadier General Jeannette Simpson and the 12th Mechanized Infantry Brigade were in the area. In the ensuing firefight, the Army repulsed the bandits with only light casualties while inflicting heavy losses on the enemy. The 12th then left a regiment in the city of Wichita while the remainder of the force chased the bandits into the ruins of Kansas City, MO. There the 12th destroyed the remnants of the band, killing them to the last man. "It needed to be done. If we didn't get rid of these pests now, they would come back to attack our homes and our families again and again. We need to send a clear message that the Federation will not stand or tolerate the existence of bandits within or outside of our borders." General Simpson said in a release from her command track when our reporters caught up with her. "The 12th will remain here in Kansas City until our reinforcements arrive from the Federation, and then we'll continue our hunt throughout Missouri, following the leads that CID and our other intelligence sources bring to us. There will be nowhere for these rats to hide." Edited June 1, 2014 by Mara Lithaen
PresidentDavid
Governor Sparks Mobilizes National Guard Troops sent to FOBs in Amarillo, Dallas, Wichita Falls and Lubbock. Texas National Guardsmen leaving San Antonio to be deployed to Dallas. Governor Sparks deployed 6,000 Texas Army National Guardsmen into north Texas cities after rebels sacked Wichita, Kansas. A short press release from the Governor's Office specifically stated that the 1st Regiment of the National Guard was deployed to a Forward Operating Base (FOB) north of the Fort Worth/Dallas metropolitan area; the 1st Battalion of the 2nd Regiment was deployed to a FOB north of Amarillo; the 2nd Battalion of the 2nd Regiment was deployed to a FOB close to the Red River outside of Wichita Falls and the 3rd Battalion of the 2nd Regiment was deployed to Lubbock. "These alleged acts of treason, if proven to be true, in the National Guard are a disgrace to the armed forces and traitors to their country - God have mercy on their souls," said Sparks in a speech he gave outside of the Governor's Mansion this morning. "The Texas government will be acting in full cooperation with the Federal Government and the State governments of Oklahoma and Louisiana to ensure that civilians remain safe and that our borders are secure. I activated two regiments of the Texas Army National Guard and deployed them to forward operation bases in the north as a precaution." Also, according to unconfirmed reports, two F-16s were scrambled over Amarillo after a civilian aircraft began to have an "erratic" and "unusual" flight pattern as one air traffic controller put it, however the aircraft reportedly later made an emergency landing due to engine trouble. Meanwhile in Austin, Governor Sparks met with the Chief of The Texas Rangers to begin a formal investigation into the Texas National Guard to "ensure that there are no illegal backdoor deals" occurring that could lead to another disaster like the sack of Wichita. Sparks also plans to double the size of the Texas Rangers from 150 to over 300 Rangers within the next few months. The budget which he plans to present to the Senate when they come into session includes a tripling of the budget for the Texas Rangers with a specification that the force should be doubled within "the next four months". The Governor reaffirmed his support for the Kansas Government and his faith that the Federal Government would be able to handle the situation. Mara Lithaen
Tornado Outbreak Strikes Metro Area Four tornadoes wreak havoc across OKC area; dozens injured, ten confirmed dead Oklahoma City, OK: Hundreds of homes lie in ruin this afternoon after tornadic storms ravaged central Oklahoma and the OKC metro. News 9 meteorologist Ken Olson says, "Today's conditions were perfect for tornado formation. A cold front and a warm front clashed in the middle of the state, causing storms to form and the atmosphere to be extremely volatile. My only surprise is that there weren't more tornadoes than we saw; but I'm grateful for that." Thousands of volunteers have already turned out in a typical display of Oklahoman compassion to dig their friends and neighbors out of the rubble of their homes, and the Red Cross is setting up aid stations throughout the affected area. PresidentDavid
Governor Sparks's 'New Deal' Passes Congress Sparks hopes to "jump-start" the Texas economy with massive public works projects. In light of the recent economic stagnation suffered by Texas, Governor Sparks ran on a platform that involved "jump starting" the Texas economy and "having it be the centerpiece of the North American economic system," as he stated in one of his campaign speeches. The conservative governor is taking a unique approach at fixing the economy. Some right wing Republicans in congress, including Representative Perez of Houston, claims that Sparks's New Deal is "socialist and unTexan". The Representative lead a small coalition of fifteen other representatives who tried to block the bill from passing in the House but were promptly defeated. The centerpiece of the bill is the allocation of $10-billion to build massive public work projects around the State of Texas which will also help fulfill Sparks's promise to update Texas infrastructure. Some of the projects include a $300,000,000 bridge from Galveston island to Bolivar peninsula, three new sky scrapers in Houston, two new skyscrapers in Dallas, three-thousand miles of railroads between major cities that will be used for transportation, a train system running between Houston and Galveston, and the reconstruction of the oil refineries in Texas City which will once again be the biggest refineries in the world. Also, the assembly manufacturing of hundreds of thousands of firearms for State Military, police use and possibly even sale to the Federal Government will be in full production within one month and will be the first program to be in full swing. Hundreds of thousands of rounds of ammunition, government vehicles, firearms and uniforms are just some of the things that will be built by civilians who are without work. If successful, the projects together are estimated to generate between 150,000 - 210,000 jobs with pay ranging from $7.25 an hour to $50 an hour for upper management positions that are not already filled by government contractors. Within one week of applications opening for the countless number of jobs, 33,000 people have already registered and applied. Governor Sparks says he is optimistic for the projects and believes Texas will hit the ground running because of them. Mara Lithaen
Combat rages in Missouri, Arkansas The 12th Mechanized Brigade continues to eliminate bandit bands on Federation borders. Two weeks after the 12th Mechanized left Federation territory to pursue the bandit bands lurking abroad in nearby territories, the fighting still rages with ever-growing intensity as the bands are hunted down and destroyed. Casualties thus far have been light on the Federation side - only 60 confirmed dead as of this date, with 236 wounded. The latest confirmed count of enemy dead is over four thousand. A statement from Federation officials earlier today praised Brigadier General Simpson's conduct and command of the action thus far. The current estimate is that the fighting can take no more than another two weeks in the Missouri and Arkansas combat zones.

PresidentDavid
Missouri and Arkansas Join Union President Reese approves new States into Federation. Missourians gather in Missouri capitol rotunda on Monday just before the Missouri government votes to join the Union. With the unanimous approval of the Senate and a near perfect vote from the House of Representatives, Missouri and Arkansas were admitted into the Federation. "I am very optimistic for the Federation's future," President Reese said. "The addition of Missouri and Arkansas into our Union is a joyous occasion." The President also explained that the formation of the new State governments "will be swift and organized". In order to ensure regional stability, Federation troops would remain in the two new States until the State governments are formed and raise their own State National Guards. Military observers appointed by the President would also act as observers for the constitutional conventions and new government activities that would end in the creation of the new governments. The admittance of the new States comes shortly after rebels in the two regions rained terror onto the Federation and sacked the city of Wichita, Kansas. Texas Governor Anthony Sparks went as far as to mobilize the Texas National Guard and send them to northern cities if reinforcements would be needed in the other States. Thanks to Brigadier General Simpson, only sixty casualties were suffered by the federation while over four-thousand rebels are reported to have been killed in action, captured or seriously injured. The General is expected to be recognized for her exceptional work in Oklahoma City after her job in the field is complete. Millions of Unionists have gotten their wish to become part of the Federation. Political scientists are divided on whether the new States will upset the political balance that the Federation currently has. What is certain is that elections on all levels - from Governor down to State representatives - will be held within the next week and only then will the country know how the political atmosphere has changed. Oklahoma City, Oklahoma - Today marked the return of the army's 12th Mechanized Brigade from counter-bandit ops in the badlands to the east. More than ten thousand troops were deployed to combat the bandit gangs that sacked Wichita, KS, and menaced the newly integrated territories of Missouri and Arkansas. All over the Federation, groups of soldiers returned to their hometowns amid fanfare and ecstatic family and friends, happy to see their loved ones returned safely home. Teary-eyed couples embraced, fathers and mothers held their children tight, and friends lauded their soldiers' safe return. "It's not something I'd care to make a habit of, this 'going to war' thing," said PFC Daniel Leary, of Wellington, KS, as he held the child he and his wife had been expecting when he got the call-up from the Army but had never met until now, "but it's nice to know that we've got so much support and love from our loved ones and the country as a whole when we do." PresidentDavid
Plains Federation Goes to War With Nation of Hawaii to Defend Citizens Soldiers sent across the Pacific to assist the Federation's closest ally Tikal in obtaining islands of the Pacific. The Congress declared a State of War on the nation of Hawaii shortly before the unconfirmed collapse of the SOVSOC government which the world had been paying so much attention to the past weeks. With Tikal spearheading the front to the islands, the government believes that the Plains Federation will only need to take a minimal role in protecting the islands. Meanwhile, actual territorial control of the islands, governance of the Hawaiian people and all other basic functions of administration would fall onto the government of Tikal. Federation soldiers are expected to hold a more secondary role in patrolling streets, setting up forward operating bases and distributing aid. The Federal Government has only confirmed the deployment of the 1st Division of the Texas National Guard along with naval assets that have yet to be confirmed. The military will be travelling through Tikal waters and territory to and along side the Tikal armed forces to get to the islands in Hawaii and other Pacific holdings. Governor Sparks has stood by with the congress and stated he supports Tikal is deescalating the situation and returning peace to the Pacific. "Too much war has happened already these past few months," Governor Anthony Sparks said on Saturday. "I look forward to seeing our soldiers and the military of Tikal protecting the people of the Pacific and ensure the international security that they do not fall into imperialist hands." The governor also said he believed the Texas National Guardsmen would serve bravely in the Pacific and that the risk to their lives was minimal. "This is more of a police action," said the governor. "We believe that if there is any conflict, it should be minimal. The Federation is here to support our ally." A state-wide day of prayer was declared by Cardinal Lewis of the Galveston-Houston Archdiocese. PresidentDavid
National State of Emergency Declared: Who is Winning the War? Hundreds of thousands of troops swarm for the north as thousands of civilians hear the call of duty. Federation Marines making ground through a cornfield in northern Kansas. Northern militants dubbed "Cornhuskers" have taken over parts of Kansas and Colorado. Hundreds of thousands of Federation soldiers and National Guardsmen have entered the field of combat in what one Senator called "the deadliest conflict in North America since the American civil war." Thousands of soldiers and civilians alike on both sides are dead. Estimates range dead Federation military anywhere from 1,500 to 3,000 and civilian deaths between 1,000 to 5,000. The Texas National Guard sent the initial bulk of forces now in the region after Governor Anthony Sparks mobilized all of his State's military forces and ordered over one-third of them into the field. States like Kansas and Colorado which have a much smaller population, budget and thus military forces are not so fortunate to be able to move such a large number of troops. Unconfirmed reports from the field state that the Kansas Air National Guard has been crippled and depending on neighboring States and the Federation Air Force for air cover. Governor Anthony Sparks called an emergency special session of the Texas Congress to address the situation in the north as tens of thousands of young Texans are heading to the border. This is all after the Federation Congress declared a National State of Emergency in their emergency session which President Reese requested. The Houston Ship Channel had maritime security tripled by a swift move of the State congress and the entire Texas fleet was deployed into the Gulf of Mexico. "My mates and I here out on the high seas are performing drills and such, nothing more," stated Admiral Edward Teach of the Texas Maritime National Guard. The Octagon made it clear that there is no expected attack to come on the south however "every precaution is being taken." The border with Nebraska, however, is not safe. Conhusker militant forces have built forward operating bases (FOWs) and have dug themselves into a hardened position. The Federation military has prevented further incursion by the Conhuskers but has yet to make a major offensive to reclaim northern Kansas or push into enemy territory. The Cornhuskers did suffer significant losses in the air during their initial attack but now they seem to be sitting back according to military officials. The Octagon and the President's Office have not commented if a major offensive will be taken but "they cannot wait forever" according to the mayor of Austin. For now, the war is at a stalemate but that has not deterred over twenty-thousand young people from visiting recruitment offices and signing up to defend their country. PresidentDavid
Texas Elections Conclude: Nationalist Party Loses Seats The number of Texans who support session from the Federation drops approximately thirty-percent. The first normally scheduled elections for the Texas legislature have concluded with surprising results. The big winners are the Federalist and Republican parties who took seats from the Democratic and Nationalist parties. Texas House of Representatives Speaker of The House: Republican 67 Republicans 34 Democrats 31 Federalists 18 Nationalists Texas Senate Lieutenant Governor (President of The Senate): Republican 14 Republicans 8 Democrats 6 Federalists 3 Nationalists The Nationalist Party, known for having a less structured party platform that includes the desire to secede from the Federation, suffered significant losses including twelve seats which went red for the Republicans. This leaves the Nationalists with only eighteen seats in the Texas House of Representatives and makes them the smallest party in the Texas Government. The Nationalists Party has been labeled as Texas's "right-wing" party and in some places, especially West Texas, that has not gone down well when it comes to voters. The Republicans on the other hand managed to pick up most of the former Nationalists seats and score a few from the Democrats as well. Political analysts connect this to Governor's Sparks successful economic policies which have drastically changed unemployment and the Texas economy for the better. The Federalists and the Democrats meanwhile continue to battle for seats in South Texas and East Texas. The Democrats are considered to be on the left more than any other party and the Federalists are typically depicted as a moderate, right-leaning party and alternative to the Democrats. The Federalists in many ways oppose the Nationalist Party, specifically when it comes to session. The Federalist Party are the ones along with a Republican-Democrat coalition which lead to Texas joining the Plains Federation in the first place. Secessionists have seen their numbers drop significantly in the West, South and somewhat in the North. The Republicans do not control the House or Senate but have been witness to many victories which bring them to a very large minority in both the House and the Senate. Legislation is expected to have a much smoother track to follow in the upcoming months because of the shifting numbers in the Texas legislature, however only time will tell if the Republicans can maintain the large numbers which they currently have. Muskets in a "Minute Man" armory near Thunder Bay. The Councils of Dark and Light passed a measure which effectively bans the owning and operation of automatic weapons or parts of them. Unlike other States in the Federation, this is not a very controversial move within Sleepy Hollow itself because automatic weapons are practically unknown in the State. The Sleepy Hollow "National Guard", which is really consisted of Sleepy Hollow's military branches, does not use automatic weapons or explosives. A military spokesperson stated that Sleepy Hollow's military could only maintain its current and historical weapons and practices if the souls of the Hollow did the same. The Forest Guard will be working closely with other States and bordering territories to ensure that other weapons are not brought into Sleepy Hollow. This is on top of a move that Baron Dusk made which is a very serious attempt to keep Sleepy Hollow isolated even from most of the Federation except for governing purposes. The souls of Sleepy Hollow have not expressed in any major voice objection to this new law. Meanwhile, the military and many local leaders have celebrated the law as "a strong way to preserve our culture and ways of life," as the mayor of Thunder Bay put it. PresidentDavid
Texas Nationalists Hold Rally in San Antonio Nationalist Party holds a peaceful independence rally, 1,000 demonstrators strong. After suffering huge losses in the midterm elections, the Nationalist Party funded an "Independence Rally" in San Antonio outside of the Alamo. Over one-thousand supporters showed up for the movement with onlookers coming in the afternoon after national media attention. The Nationalist Party has continued its stance that session ought to be done peacefully and within the law. The more radical leaders who were calling for revolution were voted out at the midterm but remain an outspoken voice in the Texas political sphere. Governor Spark's Office did not support nor condemn the protest; only stating that "All Americans have the right so express themselves peacefully." Mara Lithaen
NMG&E to open Federation's first solar power plant Environmentalists rejoice as clean power takes a step forward in the Federation. Santa Fe, NM - New Mexico Gas and Electric held a press conference today to announce that they have broken ground on the Federation's first solar thermal power plant, located in southern New Mexico. The array, backed by the BP Energy Fund, OG&E, with subsidies from the Department of Energy, will produce a total 392MW of power through 173,500 multi-mirror units. It will generate enough power to energize up to 140,000 homes in New Mexico, and will represent the sum total of solar thermal power in the Federation. With the successful funding and beginning of construction on this plant, two more are expected to be built in Texas and New Mexico, with other potential sites being considered elsewhere. This coincides with the government's "Minimal Energy Footprint" program, which aims to subsidize the purchase and installation of residential solar and wind power units. The aim of the program is to reduce stress on the nation's power network, and, should all things go according to plan, cut residential needs out of the power network altogether, thereby reducing the nation's carbon footprint.
