Full Version: So, borderlands (the game)

I don't get why everyone loves it so much. It's good. It's fun. But I just don't get why all my friends are enamored with it. I mean, the FPS parts are OK and the leveling-up and loot system are cool (though I find the abundance of guns useless, as you will rarely find a gun so statistically unique that it matters), but I found myself not really caring about anything.

The story is bland, and the side missions are blander. I've never been the type to care about story too much, but it seems here that it didn't take advantage enough of the pure-action oriented elements of the typical FPS and instead inserted ye-olde "this mission is another retread with a different description" element of many RPGs; so it seems to have decided to rely upon the weakest points of both genres.....for some reason.

In the end it is most definitely a coop game. It is certainly more fun to venture out with 3 buddies and explore the wastelands than it is alone (much more), but I just don't see what is so great here.

I guess I'm no loot collector (at least when the "loot" is generally only differentiated by some irrelevant statistical difference), so I don't understand this sort of game. Fun? Yes. Worth the 60 bucks I payed because people assured me it was JUST GREAT! No. sad.gif

For once, Opethian, I agree with your tastes in this sense. I have bought the game, and I'm having quite a bit of fun with it, but it's somewhat hollow compared to other more quality titles, in that while the gameplay is relatively entertaining, most other portions are particularly empty.

I know that if I played this in a single-player only fashion, it would be much less entertaining.

My brother is telling me that I absolutely must play this game because it's awesome and like Fallout. I have...doubts about his appraisal skills.

What is this game most similar to?

Well, I might play it for two hours then.

"Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run Baal Run" isn't exactly good gameplay IMO

It's a mix of Fallout 3 and Diablo, in that it has shooting mechanics with RPG bits. There are four characters to pick from, each with markedly different styles and abilities. They are the Hunter, the Siren, the Soldier, and the Berserker. The first can attack with his bird, the second can turn intangible and move at high speeds (and also make explosions when moving as such), the third can deploy an automatic turret, and the fourth can go into a practically indestructible rage. It's basically the Sniper, Scout, Engineer, and Heavy. The Berserker even screams similar to the HWG >__>

Anyways, it's a fun title, but only if you're playing with pals. The gameplay is relatively entertaining and even somewhat addicting, but not so much that it will keep you hooked for long. It's good, at times even great, but it is by no means amazing.

Edit: Ooh, I hadn't considered the Mad Max bit, Arcturus. Thanks, I'll have to remember that when describing it in the future.

Hm. I wasn't too impressed when I saw it for sale. This only reaffirms my initial impressions.
Colonel Radec
The game was sold out in my town. Barely any came in between two GameStops and a Wal-Mart. Although I've heard essentially the same opinions being relayed here. So I'll pass and save for MW2.
Mustakrakish II
When I saw the gameplay on IGN I wasn't that impressed either. It looks like it was trying to be Fallout but failed. (And it does look a bit like diablo now that you all say that) Not a title I would ever buy
Lord GVChamp
Played a bit of single player today. It was alright, pretty entertaining for a bit.

I think I'll save my money for something else. When was Assassin's Creed 2 coming out again?

As ty said, the twentieth of November.

I am so stoked for Assassin's Creed 2; at first I was reticent, and thought it looked like a skin-deep addition of a few small changes, thinking it would end up more like Assassin's Creed 1.5. But the more I've been seeing it, the more I've come to look forward to it.

I would also recommend getting Dragon Age.

It looks epic.

Dragon Age looks like it could be cool...because it's bioware awesome.gif

Next year? why not get it this year? Are you really that low on cash or do you just not have time to be playing games right now? If it's the latter case then I would like to ask what you are doing on the CN Forums. tongue.gif

In any event Assassin's Creed 2 also looks amazing, I'll definitely be getting it too once I finish Dragon Age.

I was thinking about getting it, but my PSP really doesn't feel like it'll last much longer. I wanted to wait until I got myself a 3000, and I feel ashamed to admit that a Go's starting to look kind of nifty.

There's going to be an entertainment pack (if they're called that) with the 3000, a 2 gig memory card (you specifically need one of those, you sad !@#$%^&) the Bloodlines game, and I think some movie.

Also, what's wrong with my brain for not wanting to buy the 360 version when my 360 is able to crap out at any given moment? And that I want to actually use my gaming computer?

I can't wait for AC2...It was in second place for my buy list behind MW2 until recently. With all the screen shot ans gameplay videos they are coming out with it just looks too amazing to pass up.

I can't wait to stab people.

AC2 is certainly going to be a great game, I'll probably wait to get it though. It comes out late November so I'll just ask for it for Christmas.

I may very well pick up this borderlands though, my friend keeps going on about how we must play it

Meh, Borderlands looks pretty crappy tbh. Although it's theme song is "Ain't No Rest For the Wicked," so I have to give it some props.
