Do want, do want, do want. I forget the guy's name but there was a forum member who was a big Tropico fan and had a Tropico avatar. Now the game is back, and it looks good. ph34r.gif

Tropico's back? awesome.gif

The demo was fantastic, though I never played the first two.
Hyperbad
I played that demo for 5 hours, both of the maps repeatedly when it came out. I pre-ordered the game at the soonest possible date. I don't think I've ever really enjoyed a demo before of course I've only given about five or so demos a chance.

The first two days of the Steam release (2 weeks early a release plus extra content) I got through much of the game already - love it! ^^
Darth Andrew
There's a demo? ph34r.gif I'll try it out, as I've never played any of the games before, though I've heard good things.
Colonel Radec
What is this game exactly?. Leading a tropical nation or something?. Looks like Republic.

It's a city builder game with a degree of internal politics and miniscule yet still important amount of foreign policy management. Build homes, factories, etc. There's also a small number of edicts you can issue and sending El Presidente out there to places actually has an impact so it's useful.
Darth Andrew
So I've been watching some videos of it, and the graphics look pretty good. Do you need a higher-end computer to play?

What kind of computer do you have?

I use a laptop with a 2.4 ghz dual core processor, 2gb ram and a geforce 8700m video card. It runs smoothly with little slow down yet with settings at medium to high. The only thing I noticed is when you continue past the original game dates into the 2000s there have been some problems quite a bit from the end date but I didn't anticipate them paying particular attention. Mostly slow down issues.

Yeah, my laptop runs Command and Conquer Generals on low settings, so I'll have to try the demo as low as possible. sad.gif

I greatly enjoyed being a super-agricultural/Soviet Ally/KGB Run nation in the first game, hopefully the third will allow my eco-tyranny to continue.

You can't win against the farmers.
Ever.
Furthermore, I think we can all agree that arresting/banishing all members of the theist faction is jolly good fun.

What exactly is Tropico?

You have an island and oppress people on it. Or you could play the game wrong and create a tourist economy or something.

Yup, you're El Presidente of some island nation that looks like the Bahamas cluster. You establish its economy however you wish whether it's a banana republic, industrialized or centered on tourism. You can move El Presidente around, give speeches and run for re-election or set up a police state with virtually no civil liberties. Just be careful, if you allow relations with either the Soviets or the Americans drop too low and aren't allied with the other then they might invade your island. Oh yeah, your character can get assassinated and coups be attempted. I like putting money into my Swiss bank account personally, just a shame there isn't anything to really do with it.

Thus far I've always played a nice President, in favor of the people and increasing all faction respect up as high as I can. Soon I'll do the same but then turn it into a brutal dictatorship.

Gamersgate actually.

After a couple rounds I can safely say it is a very addicting game and just as fun as the original (I have killed off 2 political rivals with secret police so far, scared off the Americans by allying USSR, and slaughtered a rebel attack)
Ivan V
Oh, hell yeah, finally! It's back! The original was great and the third looks like a big improvement (yay roads and cars = better logistics and less bottlenecks for food and goods production)

Downloading the demo now! biggrin.gif

You will come to hate the construction temas again, they are still the biggest problem in Tropico, they slack off so badly it isn't funny.

Notes I have found:
crops - my god these bring in money, I was making 50K a boatload on crops and the manufactured product at the end.
construction - set the priorities to high on buildings if you find they are not doing anything, that will fix it
army - get one, rebels are a pain in the $@!
roads - life savers when a garage is nearby, they can get goods across an island and make it so only one port is needed
money - keep an eye on at all time, I have gone from 120K to 4K without noticing.

Well, at least they can get to a build site across the island on time with vehicles...

They could if they would get in the bloody vehicle in the first place, I had 3 construction buildings and 1 building under construction, of a possible ~30 workers I had 1 or 2 at all times. This one project actually lasted from the start of my construction boom to well after the end (the boom last ~45 minutes RL while on the fastest speed), only reason to boom stopped was I had no clue what to try and build next.
Ivan V
I bet they'll probably have to patch that then.

Does the CTRL+rapido cheat work still? tongue.gif

You sure there was a proper road connection? If not that can cause such problems.

I had buildings just down the street go unnoticed until I put them on the high notice even though the crews were just standing around.

Sounds groovy. I'll go get it this weekend.

Wanted this game for ages! Just gotta wait til 6th November before it's released in the UK sad.gif The demo rocked. Such an improvement.

Tropico = Awesome
Tropico 2 = Meh
Tropico 3 Demo = So awesome the full game has to be so awesome my head will probably explode.

"Presidente, I believe your people will be calling for an election next year..."
Emperor Brutus
I got this game release date. Its great smile.gif
King Alexander IV
Have it, Awesome game... I seem to get invaded by the USSR on the amnesia mission every time, 4th time trying to pass it.

Best nation management game i've ever played, it's like CN but more in-depth and more fun.
CBray
And with less nukes! tongue.gif

I'm playing the "Banana" demo mission where you have to export crops, and every time a ship leaves port, it leaves without any of my exports. Do I have to do that manually, or do my farms do it automatically?
CBray
Provided you have teamsters and you're making an excess you should be automatically exporting.
SoxNation
download is done, will install when i get home from work!

It also takes a long time before the money starts coming in, crops take a while to start bringing in money. One thing I want to see is an option for anti-rebel warfare where your troops go out and try to wipe them out.

oh, cigars bring in loads of cash usually.

Hmm, either my people are stupid idiots, or they changed the mechanic of rent and income; I have a rent of 2 for houses, with income being 6, and people are building shacks and there's no unemployment

The first thing I do when I start a game is scout the terrain for types of resources of all. What ever type of farm would be the most profitable around where my initial set-up is I build 4-6. You'll go bankrupt from it ($-10,000) where it says you can't spend any more but it won't go much lower then that and soon it'll shoot up to where you're making a nice profit for so early. I do this with the idea in mind of very quickly building the garage after and then after that the factory. Usually 6 of any farm allows for 2 factories of the same type and you'll make a killing.

I want to be able to give my troops basic commands as well like use caution, etc. I also dislike the stand there and shoot at each other like it's 1700 again. Oh and I want at least one infantry combat vehicle.

I did have a lol minute when I had 35 troops and 6 rebels attacked. 10 of my troops plus El Presidente got to the place the rebels were attacking before they got there. I was like, how are you going to be late to your own attack?

I find 1 rent buildings to be very useful for especially immigrants but also those that are in my poorest of jobs. They tend to prioritize their spending a bit differently...
