When the Destiny 1st jumped out of hyperspace at the start of the show and the camera started zooming in the 1st thing I thought was, "That looks like a wraith ship made of metal."
Didn't they specifically state that they WEREN'T in hyperspace, and that the ship was using some faster than light technology that they'd never seen before? It certainly wasn't a wormhole drive (urg... that was really half-assed.. although why WOULDN'T this ship have a wormhole drive?), and didn't seem to show the hyperspace field around it. I do hope they explain it at some point, especially since the Aurora class ships, as well as Atlantis, both used hyperspace.
They're actually gonna have a ton of trouble explaining the discontinuity of the tech with the previous two series, I think. ZPM's wouldn't last 100's of thousands of years, so the ship would have to have some sort of ZPM factory, along with a means of transporting them to wherever they're needed. Which would, essentially, give the crew unlimited power, once they find the raw ZPM materials. So they'll need some other power source, and an explanation behind it. As well as why the ship uses some strange new FTL drive instead of hyperspace or a wormhole drive (I *really* don't know why I can remember all of this sort of stuff, but not anything that would actually be relevant in everyday life. I only watch most of the episodes once...).
I'm not a big fan of the show, although I'll give it a chance to change my mind. It really felt like they were trying to redo the Atlantis pilot, but darker (far from home, can't get back, running out of air, minimal supplies, etc.). It actually makes me wonder how they're going to ruin it and manage to establish relatively easy travel between the Destiny and Earth this time. And the camera work bothers me (I was never a fan of the new BSG, unlike most here). Is it really too much to ask for them to hold the damn thing steady? Worst of all though, it didn't have any of the elements of humour that the rest of the franchise does.
It will be interesting to see if they use the stargate solely as little more than a transporter down to whatever planet they're orbiting at the time, or whether they'll go to several different worlds in each galaxy. Since the map Dr. Rush found only seemed to show a handful of galaxies, that *should* mean one of three things: 1) They'll spend an awful lot of time in each galaxy, making the countdown on each stop fairly (although far from completely) pointless (which would also allow for the establishing of races of bad guys for decently long story arcs), 2) The ship will spend a LOT of time in between galaxies, making the stargate essentially useless, or 3) The ship will dramatically increase its speed, which would cause a considerable drain in their already-lacking power, making that one unlikely.
I really hope they keep the SG-1/Atlantis movies in the old format (and I'd really like to know what extra important secret mission the Odyssey (I think) was on in the Atlantis finale).
