Marijuana Legalized!Sarajevo: In a sudden and shcoking move today, the Savezna Skupština has overwhelmingly voted in favor of a bill (also known as Y240)that would make purchase, sale and consumption of marijuana no longer a criminal offense as well as the legalization of the cultivation of any cannabis species (except those with excessively high levels of THC) in Yugoslavan territory. Skupština members justified the approval of Y240 as a response to the persistently high criminality level in major cities such as Sarajevo, Beogard and Zagreb, where drug-related crimes steadily climbed while other sorts of violations decreased - effectively causing little change to criminal incidents.
"Obviously, the fact that the (by far the) most popular recreational drug (marijuana) in all Yugoslavan nations is linked to most of the crimes indicate that its illicit status is fueling the crimes... a few grams can go for as many as 300 dinars thanks to the huge demand and little availability. Kids beating up or killing others for a bit of the drug yields monetary gains. Control of marijuana supply is a goldmine for any criminal organization. A lot of people that are just doing their thing and not bothering anyone ends up locked up and overcrowding our prisons with non-violent offenders. Well, no more.", said Željka Antunović, Skupština member (representing a district in Virovitica).
The interior of the first"coffee shop" in Beogard, Yugoslavia. However, the decision was not met without widespread popular criticism. Various protests across Yugoslavia took place while Y240 was being discussed, and several riots erupted after it was made into law - rioters' main target were federal buildings. Several federal offices were heavily vandalized as well. More conservative municipalities have already passed ordinances banning the establishment of coffee shops in their jurisdictions.
"This is a shame to our country and society!", said a Slovenian protester, with whose sentiments much of the dissenters agree with "Drugs are NOT good and the federal government allowing weed to roam freely means that it endorses its consumption. Not to mention many more of our kids will end up as "blazeheads". We don't want that. Oh, and they didn't even consult the population before putting that moral failure of a bill forward. They know it'd get rejected. What the hell are they thinking?"
"I know the Skupština will get a lot of backlash for this.", stated a policeman from Zagreb "But it's a relief for us! We won't need to ram down doors just because a bunch of kids or hippies just want to have a good time - and soon enough, with gangsters that shoot to kill. Now, that'll be the real relief."
On somewhat related news, 5,000 JNA personnel plus several armored cars were dispatched to the municipality of Shkoder in neighboring Albania as the country's mafia almost certainly supplies the majority of the illicit cocaine, heroine and crystal meth that circulates around Yugoslavia (and particularly Serbia, Macedonia and Montenegro). Because of the apparent failure of Albania to put down the criminals or to even hear to Yugoslavan concerns, the country has decided to take matters into its own hands.
JNA bulks up and goes on the move"It feels nice to see so many fresh faces willing to defend their homeland!", enthusiastically stated Army General Konstantin Popov. "Let's just hope we don't ever have to use them."
Popov's enthusiasm was a result of the Jugoslovenska Narodna Armija (Yugoslav's People Army) expanding to 300,000 personnel - still half as much of what the SFYR had before the collapse of Socialist Yugoslavia, but it is still an impressive number - particularly considering that each soldier is being equipped with the latest arsenal available and trained by veterans, many of whom have seen action multiple times (such as the Yugoslavan Civil Wars), ensuring that the plenitude of experience of the Yugoslavs is passed on to the newer ranks. On the meanwhile, factories rolled out more 500 Black Panthers K2 were produced, as well as a total of 100 more fifth generation fighters and bombers.
The next personnel milestone to be broken is old JNA's 620,000 number - expected to be reached within two months.
