Yet this gentle one is unlike any which have approached our halls before. He appeared on our doorstep, with neither cap on his head nor coin in his pocket. If a past he has, it has been misplaced. (Though it is written, and fortunately stored in the Order’s own archival athenaeum.) From his own paltry recollection, one would think he had formed from the darkness of nothingness at our gate; pure, untarnished, immaculate. This simple one was met by our Squire Hime Themis with courtesy, as well with the special reverence reserved for his kind. The Good Squire explained where the pilgrim was, who we were, and how he may best make his way to more suitable lodgings.
Yet he would not go.
Fearing his courteous tone had been lost on the foreigner, our Squire employed a more direct method of conversation. He could not stay, we had no place for him, there were no more rooms in the inn, and we were very sorry.
Yet he lingered, and would not go.
Reluctantly, a Page of the Order was instructed to don his simple armor, and escort our wayward friend to other pastures. In our Page’s efforts our visitor gibbered and yelped and called on spirits to avenge his weeping pride. Yet he would not stray, and perhaps those spirits heard him. For as the Order watched this dancing pilgrim again return to our door, he beguiled our sad fancy into smiling, as the poet almost said.
And so I am pleased to state that, by unanimous acclaim, this gentle soul may forgo service in Her Majesty’s Army Blackwater, and the rigors of the supplication trials are hereby waived. We invite you, Toffee, to join us in Her Majesty’s Halls, to present yourself before Sir Neboe, Knight Protector of the Order, who shall bestow upon you the title and rights of Court Jester.
Providence has brought you to us, and we shan’t cast you out, but instead we shall honor the wishes of Fortune to employ you as your talents demand.
Welcome, good Jester Toffee, our favorite fool.
QUOTE
The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But we have promises to keep,
And miles to go before we sleep,
And miles to go before we sleep.
But we have promises to keep,
And miles to go before we sleep,
And miles to go before we sleep.
