Happy 4th Birthday MHA!
By: The DP Team

IT'S OUR BIRTHDAY! :crowngrin: The 9th of September recognises that day, 4 year ago, when this alliance was founded in the spirit of all that is hoopy and froody. To celebrate we have the BEST party in the history of CN over in these forums.

We have games, competitions, stories, idea blitzing and much much more. Head over, grab yourself a Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster from one of our plastic pal waiters and see how much food you can steal from the buffet table without Cable noticing ;)

MHAil!

Our Birthday
By: Andrew Eacorn

In September 9, 2006, a group of people got together to make something wonderful. This is not their story. Their story is long and boring. This story is only one of those adjectives. And it is about how the MHA was created.

As with most important events in history, exactly how the MHA was created is not known. Well, it IS, but we’re not here to read history, are we? What is known is that their founding ideals where life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, democracy, freedom and the pursuit of blood and murder (or good times & fun, I wasn’t really paying attention).
Also, they made a lot of noise about “The Hitchhikers something something” (again, not paying much attention), which in practice meant that you’d have to mention peanuts, towels and the number 42 once in a while, and feel slightly encouraged to read a book, which in fact turned out to be five. What were they thinking? Books? In the 21st century? It’s as if they thought 21 is half of 42! Hey, wait a moment…

Anyway, after four years, a lot of effort (you can’t cheat in CN, can you? Can you...? Please?), companionship (or blatant ass-licking, if you know what I mean) , way too much alcohol (we're like that), some backstabbing (I assume there has been some, after all, they post too little spam to be robots, which means they are humans and will backstab any triumvir today as easily as that lone triumvir was backstabbed I-don’t-know-how-many-times in 44B.C.), so many wars (Have you compared CN statistics to real ones? We’re worse than Hitler! We’re all Kim Jong-Il!!!) and a lot of fun, (if you aren’t having fun with my excessive use of parenthesis or historical references then I don't know what will make you laugh, more booze maybe?) here we are, the greatest alliance in CN, be it in purely mathematical terms or in “We're the hoopiest froods this side of the Crab Nebula” kinda way or in “Our alliance theme is the best, or at least we don't have anything to do with Twilight” way.

Now, before I forget, Pourquoi has told me to insert some links to some Vogon poetry + Alcohol related competitions we're have. Being so cool that you could keep a side of meat in me for a month, I won't lower myself to mindlessly plug poetry and alcohol - particularly given that I drank most the booze already.

Last but not least, I would like to leave you with some inspiring quotes from the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy... I say 'would like to', turns out that copyrighting is a real pain, so we have to make do with a lesser known Science fiction quote instead; 'Keep watching the skies' ... It was the best quote we could get on our budget ok? If that's not your liking then DON'T PANIC! Just wish us a happy birthday and we'll see y'all in another 4 years with bigger and better quotes!

Triumvir Elections
By: Pourquoi

The race for one of the three hotseats in the MHA executive, the Triumvirate, was contested by two former Triums & MoT's this month. Incumbent majorddf chose not to compete for a third term, so the battlefield was left open to Jadoo1989, a former Trium and Mot, and Draden Val.... Draden, another former Trium and Mot.

Despite obvious similarities in their job history, both candidates presneted significantly different views on what they would do as Triumvir. Jadoo set out a plan for goal setting, reinvigoration and direction as leader, whilst Draden focussed on a campaign based on economic changes and emphasis.

Both candidates were exceptionally qualified for the job, but ultimately it was Jadoo1989 who emerged victorious, with 67% of the vote. So congratulations Jadoo our (sort of new) Triumvir. MHAil!

Court Elections
By: Pourquoi

Interest in court elections has been on the up recently, with higher turnouts and far more contested elections for Court Seats. This month though it was no surprise that El Presidente, long term CO and general Court expert, stood unopposed for the position and was confirmed resoundingly.

Congrats El P.

Within the Alliance
Ministry Changes
By: Pourquoi

Well, we have quite a few changes this month.

Aside from the elections, a total of 3 new Ministers were appointed this month;

In the MoH, unpronounced chose to stand down as Minister to focus on rl work. Don't worry though folks he'll still be helping out in the Ministry. This gap in the Ministry was filled by noneother than myself - Pourquoi. As a twice former MoH, I guess I was most qualified or something? They couldn't have picked me for any other reason.

Meanwhile, the MoBF saw Yankeefan step down, also for rl reasons. This position was filled by Queen Hoopdy, one time DP wine reviewer and a Captain in the MoDF. Hoopdy will hopefully bring a fresh perspective and new ideas to the table, so we look forward to seeing what happens in the MoBF over the coming weeks.

Finally, with Jadoo ascending to Triumvir, we had a vacancy at the MoT emerge. This was quickly filled by Jadoo's Triumvirate opponent Draden, who takes up his old job which will allow him to focus on some of those economic reforms.

With my own move to the MoH, there is a vacancy for Speaker of the Hitchhiker's Assembly, which is yet to be filled.

So, after a LOT of changes, the MHA government now looks like this;

Triumvirate: Dynasty, Cable77, Jadoo1989

Minister of Hitchhikers (Members): Pourquoi
Deputy: qldvespanut

Minister of Bad Poetry (Communications): priya91

Minister of Destructor Fleets (War): madspartus

By: The King

Diplomats! Hitchhikers! Everybody else! Come check out the newest addition to the MHA! Last month, the MHA created a totally awesome library! Herein lies all of MHA's treaties, wars, and whatever else anyone ever bothered to create. It's open to all as a public forum too.

Within the library, you will find articles written by the oldest planet Bob veterans, from many different alliances; not to mention our wonderful interviews. Anyone from any alliance and even former CN players are allowed to write articles and obtain interviews. We also have a Don't Panic! archive as well as all of our historical statistics and government.

Later we plan to have articles on the history of both CN and the MHA. Come and check it out.

Our history is broken down by years starting with 2006, when the alliance was formed. There is an index and another sub forum for treaties. Later, we anticipate expanding to other alliance's information. So grab a towel, get a bag of peanuts, put your thumbs up and head on over to The Encyclopedia Galactica!

Gladiator Games
By: Gunther

What started out as a friendly competition between Cody K and Gunther turned into the resurrection of Scytale's Gladiator games. The 4th Fleet hosted two sets of Gladiator rounds using CN Tournament Edition as the playground. All the officers of 4th Fleet were asked and volunteered to participate including Gunther, dead, Cody K, Neptunebyte, nishiyoshi, mohamed and Scorn filling in the 7th spot. As it turned out a second group of seven wanted to or were invited to participate including pudge1975, RaulCastro, Folkminister , The King, FearUnited, benmecha and kewlleo.

The key to these events is having a decent trade ring set up as quick as possible. You get seven days to set one up and we were able to form three groups using Mostly Harmless Destructor Fleet members with the assistance of Dynasty. Some rings were better than others. Once the trade rings are formed, we choose Day seven to collect taxes because it adds a +2 Happiness bonus and effective 12AM server time, the game is on!

Pudge's group started out slow as pudge never declared war on anyone and didn't increase his NS for others to do the same. The group fought well with three participants clearly leading the pack; The King, RaulCastro and benmecha. On day #4 a Raider attacked benmecha, but RaulCastro was already in the lead and The King fell out of competition. The round was called because the Raider interfered and Raul Castro was declared the winner.

With the 4th Fleet Officers, there were two participants who came out on top right from the beginning and remained there throughout; dead and Scorn. The fighting was hairy with Scorn being the #3 nation to have incurred the most casualties in CN:TE since the beginning of the round. We are two days away from ending and Scorn still holds the lead. All competitors will be entitled to display Merit 38 and now Scorn and Raul Castro are authorized to display Merit 69 in their signatures. Thank you to everyone who participated.

ZOMG Free Aid!
By: Rugby

From the world of where promises are born, the land of Recruitment is pleased to announce that we have successfully issued almost 3000 IOU's to new nations for protection, aid, and education for the month of August. Indeed, many happy punters have rushed to our gates to redeem their vouchers over the past 31 days and as such, Planet Bob's Largest People Hoarder has increased our membership base by almost 10%. Frankly we're getting concerned that our Ministry of Hitchhikers staff are simply addicted to meeting new people, or we're secretly holding the world's largest season of The Bachelor. Eitherway, it was a good month.

However, there's always one person who goes above and beyond and from now on, the Recruiting Department will be highlighting their efforts in an obviously-named award, The Recruiter of the Month. (I wanted to name it after my grandfather but apparently somebody else called Golden Globe already has a ceremony named after them. Go figure.) For this month, our recipient is Loki Grim, who sent over 1500 messages and has been a dedicated daily recruiter. In addition, Loki also received the Lord of the Timeclock award, which is not unlike the first prize but only more sexist. Congrats to Loki and to all of our recruiters for their dedication and service.

In future, we're planning more new initiatives and competitions and references to bad reality television, so watch this space for further updates.

The Amazing Sanction Race
By: Pourquoi

Its sometimes difficult to gauge how well the alliance is growing, especially in comparison to other alliances. So, as it's our birthday, I thought now would be a good time to look back and see how far we've come over the last month, six months, year and how far we've come since the first 'Amazing Sanction Race' post on the 2nd of January 2008, over 2 years and 9 months ago.

Today:
1 [683] (+1) Mostly Harmless Alliance : 61.74 --> 61.89 (+0.15)
2 [518] (+1) New Pacific Order : 56.21 --> 56.35 (+0.14)
3 [257] (+0) Green Protection Agency : 45.23 --> 45.17 (-0.06)
We're top of the pack, with a Score lead over NPO in 2nd of more than 5, and 3rd place GPA of more than 15!

A month ago:
1 [651] (+1) Mostly Harmless Alliance : 57.47 --> 57.67 (+0.20)
2 [540] (+2) New Pacific Order : 53.58 --> 53.77 (+0.19)
3 [281] (-1) Green Protection Agency : 44.89 --> 44.91 (+0.02)

So we had a similar lead over both NPO and GPA. Over the month we grew by more than 4 points. Quite impressive, but lets see how far we've come since this time last year.

A year ago:
1 [226] (-1) The Order Of The Paradox : 52.16 --> 52.00 (-0.16)
2 [623] (-13) Sparta : 49.82 --> 49.68 (-0.24)
3 [641] (-4) Mostly Harmless Alliance : 48.53 --> 48.57 (+0.04)
4 [415] (-1) New Polar Order : 45.83 --> 45.94 (+0.11)

How times have changed. TOP were the elite leaders of the scoreboard. Ourselves & Sparta vied for 2nd, NPO were still under sanction requirements... Back then our score of 48.57 wasn't at all bad, and I doubt many back then would have envisaged us here today.

Now lets really plunge back in time; the date is January 2nd 2008. Where was the MHA back then:
8 Global Alliance and Treaty Organization: 19.35 --> 19.38 (+0.03)
9 Sparta: 19.12 --> 19.15 (+0.03)
10 MHA: 18.41--> 18.58 (+0.17)
11 The Phoenix Federation: 18.23 --> 18.52 (+0.29)
12 Atlantis: 18.28 --> 18.41 (+0.13)
Well, quite a long way off today. Our score was more than 42 lower than it is today (42 isnt the most accurate rounding, but I prefer it nonetheless) and we were some 36.5 score away from the leaders GPA on 55.

So there you go. Before I forget, I wish to dedicate this post to the Amazing Sanction Race, from whence all that is above is stolen:

RaulCastro

Though I felt there were many of roughly the same quality this month, Raul's was just slightly unexpected and I found it particularly enjoyable, even if part of me thought The King's 'Ouch' had a certain simple charm to it.

So congrats RaulCastro, to claim your prize just get in contact with Pourquoi to arrange delivery. :)

Below is our next Caption Comp picture. Once again, the best entries will be in the next edition, and the entry judged best overall will win a prize of 3mil. The competition is open to all, including non-MHAers. Indeed, if we get enough people from outside the MHA submitting entries we might introduce a prize for best MHA entry and best non-MHA entry.

The Editor's Drinking...
By: Pourquoi

About ten days ago a friend of mine celebrated their 20th birthday. This naturally led to one night out which none of us will ever forget. We won't forget it because we can't remember it in the first place.

No matter. On said night out we ended up at a bar which specialised in vodka. As they did vodka cocktails at very good prices (between £3.50 & £4.50 a cocktail, which is pretty good value in a bar these days) I opted to drink vodka based cocktails all night - and eventually early morning.
The one I drank most ended up being a vodka sunrise;

Ingredients:
Vodka 50ml
Orange Juice 150ml
Grenadine 25ml
Ice
Orange Peel

The vodka sunrise is essentially a version of the more famous Tequila sunrise with vodka replacing the key alcoholic ingredient. In the end, you get a joyfully sweet and refreshing drink, which, with the right ratios, makes you think you're maybe, not quite, perhaps consuming alcohol, but you couldn't quite tell. If you get me.

The grenadine is the key ingredient really, seperating it from being a plain old vodka & orange juice. If you make one yourself, just slip the grenadine down the side of the glass, and let it settle at the bottom and don't stir. That way the taste of the grenadine becomes stronger the more you drink. It's also what gives the drink it's beautiful, orangey/red glow that lends the name 'sunrise' to the drink.

Anyhoo, a great drink, particularly in good weather, but also of an occasion when you want to impress people with a drink that looks a bit different.

Cheers all.

By: The Editor

In last month's edition, we incorrectly claimed that Court Officer candidate Myth had used a campaign sig during his campaign. He did not in fact use a campaign sig. The DP wishes to apologize for this.

Further, in last month's edition we incorrectly claimed Vacant was the Deputy Minister for Communucations. Mr. Vacant did not contact us personally, but we feel we should offer him an apology nonetheless for our error in this regard.

Finally, we would like to apologise for the incorrect assertion made by our demotivational poster in last month's edition. The Poster claimed that war was the best way to make weather forecasts accurate. However, it has come to the editor's attention that war can actually lead to erratic and previously unseen weather conditions, as the population of my country discovered during the last war, when a nuclear missile detonated over a neighbouring ocean causing fish to rain down from the sky - entirely contrary to the predicted cloudy with sunny spells forecast made by local television that morning.

So another edition of DP goes by and another year of the MHA with it. We've grown a lot in that time and hugely since the alliance's inception. As #1 alliance in CN I think we've earned ourselves some birthday presents and a nice party. We wish the rest of CN a good day as well and look forward to the future, whatever it may bring.

3 [641] (-4) Mostly Harmless Alliance : 48.53 --> 48.57 (+0.04)
4 [415] (-1) New Polar Order : 45.83 --> 45.94 (+0.11)

8 Global Alliance and Treaty Organization: 19.35 --> 19.38 (+0.03)
9 Sparta: 19.12 --> 19.15 (+0.03)
10 MHA: 18.41--> 18.58 (+0.17)
11 The Phoenix Federation: 18.23 --> 18.52 (+0.29)
12 Atlantis: 18.28 --> 18.41 (+0.13)

For more info on the sanction race I highly recommend this articleon the CN wiki. This is what the very first recorded entry of the modern day sanction race looked like:
