I am doing a little paper on Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales, I am writing about the Knight and his participation in the Crusades. My question which I had was about Crusader states, and alliances. That is to say, I would like to know (I had heard about it, need solid information though) if Crusader states made alliances or treaties with other Islamic states.

What got me interested was:

Quote

Somtyme with the lord of Palatye
Agayn another hethen in Turkye;
And everemoore he hadde a sovereyn prys.

"the lord of Palatye" according to one footnote, which I could not find a source for that, was a pagan alliance of convenience, which was often made during the Crusades between Christians and pagans. So I am trying to see what sorts of alliances were made, mainly hoping for a crusader state allying with a so called pagan one, and fighting fellow Crusaders.

Much thanks in advance,
Fritz

King Richard and Saladim respected each other highly as formidable and just enemies.

While I can't give you a specific incident as I can't remember, I do believe you are on the right track. During the time period where the Kingdom of Jerusalem was established and at peace with its larger islamic neighbors, there was more meshing between muslims and crusaders then a lot of people think. As the area on both christian and islamic side was very feudalistic in nature, I can say with a lot of confidence that there was probably minor landholders of different religions who worked together. I don't know if a Christian knight ever attacked another christian knight as they were the minority. But, I know there are historic instances of christian knights helping out one minor muslim ruler against another.

I do know that the Crusader States later on, near the end of their days, made alliances with the Mongols throughout the later half of the 13th century. They had good relations with the Mongols and tried to work together to topple the Mamluks and Ayyubids of Egypt, but their campaigns usually ended in failure, and ended in definitely crushing failure when the Mongol Army invading Syria in 1303 was completely wiped out and routed.
