He just died. I can't find an article for it, but word of mouth and wikipedia support the idea. Very sad. I might not have agreed with a lot of his views, but he did so some good work and had good intentions. Not much to debate; just a world event.

I seem to recall a tradition in some legislatures that if one member of a house is ill, a member of an opposing party will abstain during important votes out of respect for the other member.
Do they do that in US?
Do they do that in US?

I doubt it
Edit: Even though I disagreed with him on a lot of stuff, it's sad to see a public servant die.

Well, from a practical standpoint, the Senate is now down one senator for at least the next 145 days. He was a big proponent of universal healthcare, so this is especially bad news on that front.
RIP Ted Kennedy, he was an asskicker and nametaker.

Depends, when can they have a special election? He wasn't present at the senate for a while anyways, so he was actually not helping as much as he would have if he was healthy, if they get someone new in quick, it would actually help them.

the last of three brothers: one a president, one a presidential candidate assassinated before his time, the last the lion of the senate.
He served long and tirelessly, and will be missed by the legislature he served for so long.
Let's hope that neither side are tacky enough to use his death for political capital or cheap namecalling. I have no faith in this, though, so I'm starting a stopwatch until I see the first Chappaquiddick related cartoon.

Check out Free Republic (if you don't value your sanity). I hope that stopwatch has a "reverse" setting
