Question ya'll. Would it take up more space, and have the risk of slowing my computer down, if I used steam to download a game? The prices are the same either way (minus sales tax I think) so I was wondering what any steam users and CD users thought about it.
I prefer discs because you then have a hard copy of the game with you, which is much more secure and reassuring. Also, I think it takes up more space because somethings are run from the disc perhaps. If not the simple fact that you have steam installed.

With steam the disk is virtually useless as soon as you install the game you will never (bar a re-install) put the disk into your drive again so there really is no difference between having the hard copy or downloading it, its just a matter of convenience. If you have a credit card and internet speeds to download it in reasonable time then buying it online is the best choice, otherwise(or if its cheaper) buying it in a shop is the best choice.

You got me there, but my STEAM isn't disappearing for a good, long while.
That's why it's best to have the hard copy, though the Orange Box still needs Steam. Then again, being able to install it at any time anywhere with internet access is better than having to download it. But that brings up another counterpoint, you need internet access for steam.

A large portion of Steam games are multiplayer only.
Counter-Strike.
Team Fortress Classic.
Team Fortress 2.
Left 4 Dead.
Day of Defeat
And their respective Sourcified versions.
It would be pointless to own these games without an internet connection. Besides, a decent internet connection isn't hard to come by.

It is in cottage country, or a small village like I was in in Italy. Suppose I took my laptop with me and wanted to play Half Life? Screwed. Whereas, there are cracks. I dunno if cracks work for steam games, but for something like Mass Effect, works like a charm.

I prefer having the games on my hard drive because you get better performance, you don't have to find a disk to play a game, and it's free.
