Okay so...
I have never heard of this problem, anywhere, ever, but its freaking odd....

First off-
My laptop refuses to turn off, hibernate, standby, anything, while it is plugged into the battery.
To do any of the above, I need to take the charger out of the laptop.
Since I'm a lazy fellow, I don't wait for it to turn off to plug it back in, I just leave it unplugged through the night.

I talked to Dell about this, and their n00bs didn't know how to solve my problem.

Second off-
Every morning, at 3 AM on the dot, my laptop turns on.
Since I have to leave it not plugged in through the night, and it has literally a 30 minute battery life ( >< ), when I go to turn it on in the AM, it is dead.

Any suggestions, anyone?
I've already reinstalled, and updated my BIOS. That fixed it for one day...and then it was back...

Press and hold the power button for about 5 seconds. It forces a shutdown.

Edit: After I thought about it... somebody might be controlling your laptop remotely.
Get any data you need out of that computer and reformat.

One of my friends thinks that you have done something to the power settings so that the power button (in windows) no longer shuts off the computer. He also thinks that the 3 AM startup is your computer downloading Windows updates since it isn't actually off.

What operating system are you using, and what's the history of your laptop?

My settings are perfectly fine, and I'm fairly sure no one's remote controlling my computer at 3 AM ;)

Its Windows Vista, and I've had it for a year and half, not many problems.

The power button still turns it off, but only when its not plugged in.
Same with the shut off buttons in the start menu...

When did this problem first happen, and has anyone else had control over your laptop ever

*SIGH*

When he said history he meant "do other people but you ever use this laptop".

Also go to your taskbar and right click on the power icon
click power options
in the left hand side of the window that pops up "choose what power buttons do" click that
make sure the settings are so when the computer is plugged in hitting the buttons will not just make it sleep.
if that does not work do me a favor and screenshot the settings, without being able to see it descriptions are useless.

The computer turning on is either a wake on lan mode trojan/virus or your sleeping computer finishing updates then restarting.

No one but me ever uses this laptop, or ever has.
I live at home (im in highschool)

My power options are all set to make the laptop Sleep, but it doesn't go to sleep either...

As far as my virus scans have told me, my computers clean...and I'm pretty sure it hasn't been doing updates either...

I've been having this problem probably for a good six months, it's never really truly bothered me until my laptop battery started going to hell, and especially now since it's been phantom-turning on on me...

My roommate had this problem, but with the internet. I can ask him for his solution but I doubt it would work, as for awhile simply unplugging it worked.

Also, in before mac-whore comment.

It looks like based on the screenshot that you are putting the computer to sleep and it is updating at 3. If you change the settings in that menu to shut down there will no longer be a problem.

Change the plugged in sleep options to it does not auto load the OS if it is plugged in.

Keep in mind hibernate and sleep are different animals, sleep shuts down the screen and basic things, hibernate actually parks the machine. It seems you want it to hibernate but you are putting it to sleep. I blame the OS for not making this specific.

Hmm...but I've always liked just putting it to sleep, because it gets back up and running so quickly after that...

And, I'm pretty sure it's not just updating at 3, because if it was updating it would have to do a full restart; but upon logon I'm still stuck with the same screen I left when I turned it off...

Starting up at 3am is almost certainly a BIOS setting. Also, is that if it's in sleep or also if it's shut down? If it's just waking from sleep, open a command prompt and type "powercfg -lastwake" (no quotes) in and post what it tells you. My computer had a problem like that a while back where it'd come out of sleep mode at 3am and it turned out to be a Media Center content scanner.. <_<

As for the other problems, back up your data and reformat if you want the easy solution. If it keeps happening, it's a hardware or driver problem. It'd probably be better to try other things first though.

Alright, I'll definitely try that when I get home, or tomorrow morning actually...
Thanks!
