Iran says it has launched its first domestically made satellite into orbit.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said the launch had been successful and that with it Iran had "officially achieved a presence in space".

The satellite, carried on a Safir-2 rocket, was meant for telecommunication and research purposes, state TV said.

A US state department official said the launch was of "great concern" and could lead to ballistic missile development. Iran insists its intent is peaceful.

France has also expressed concern, saying the technology used was "very similar" to that used in ballistic missiles.

Gee, no kidding France? Satellite launch tech is similar to ICBM tech? And just how did you and the U.S. of A. learn that, I wonder ..... ?

I'm pretty worried, next thing you know Iran will figure out smelting and welding.

Has there been any confirmation that this thing actually works, beyond the launch footage? For all we know, it could have promptly crashed a few miles down the road. It's not likely, but I'm intrigued.

Two objects from the launch, likely the Omid satellite and part of its booster, are circling Earth in oval-shaped orbits.

The orbits range in altitude from low points of 153 miles to high points of 235 miles and 273 miles. The orbital inclination is 55.5 degrees, according to U.S. military tracking data.

"Iran is the first new space-faring nation since Israel joined the club in 1988."

Irony!

Okay ... more like motive.

Congratulations on launching Sputnik, Iran.

We'll be over here preparing for our return to the moon and first trip to Mars.

No, they're the most recent manned-space program.

This is clearly a threat to the freedom and democracy that we in the West love and adore. It might just be a satellite for now, but when will it stop? "Oh, we're just delivering nuclear power via space in this rocket propelled capsule, that's all!" and other sorts of BS.
How long until they declare Space to be Iranian territory, forcing female astronauts to cover there bodies in clothing and declaring Sharia law? I don't know about you guys, but I'm really concerned. It's like CoD4 all over again, only this time it's RL.

The Soviet Union did a similar thing in the 1950s and 1960s. At first it was a metal ball, then a monkey to steal all of the space bananas.

Where and when will it end? How long until everyone says that we've had enough?

I do have to find it a bit odd that they did this using a modified ballistic missile.

Iran can probably afford their space program though.

We can too. We just need to cut out the other crap that's taking it's funding. The estimated income for the US government in 2009 is 2.7 trillion. NASA's budget is $17.3 billion. Even if you assume that NASA only gets money from the US government, which is false, NASA barely gets .6% of the US budget.

Well sure, we can afford anything if you wave a magic wand and ignore the debt. That's not really the question. Why don't we just give every government department $2T amirite?

A disaster for Freedom though.

And with the firing of Iranian rocket boosters, an idea died.

If we ignored Iran they'd coup their backwards masters in a few years.

I'm pretty sure that the Soviets used dogs, and the US used monkeys.
