A letter was posted to Dr. Pons, in order to better prepare him for his time in Camberlain.
"I write you, most respectable Doctor, so that you might know the true conditions of the Territories of Camberlain, and the rest of the Federation", wrote the Margravine Liselle. "You will find, upon arriving in our country, that the outer cities, the cities of the coasts, are quite large and well fortified, with the city governments keeping up the local police and national guard forces. The coastal cities are our outward looking people, those dedicated to seeing the world without and both defending us from it and involving us in it. The Lords who rule the area are served by the Mayor's and Governors, who are elected by the people. The City Party(that advocates expansion of the cities and more taxes on the interior) , the Neu-Martencist Party (A softer Martencism more focused on protection of culture and keeping up civic works) and the Pacifican party (that advocates stronger relations with other "Pacificans" and focuses on regional unity) are all in competition here. Political protests are not common; however, there are many speakers squares and shops where anyone can discuss politcal though, diplomatic theory, and whatever other subjects they enjoy.
"In the interior, however, life is much different. Most of the interior is given up to farming, raising cattle, or the great forests. The Ruralist Party (Which advocates taxing the cities more and the country less, as well as more exporting of their goods) the Free Catholic Movement among the Fuyo-Clann (The Fuyo being asians who have adopted our Celtic culture) and the Society Of Friends (farmers and townsfolk who preach the love of God, pacificism, and hard work) hold sway here, as well as some gentler neo-pagans and Free Church Christians. The most notable feature of the interior is the utter freedom a man has, besides paying his taxes which are all payed through either the selling or purchase tax. These taxes are light, however, and money flows freely in all hands. Weapons such as rifles are very common, and some of the best shots in the Camberlain Royal Marines are descended from these country folk.
"I suppose it is hard to square away the free-living country folk with our military image, not to mention our towns which, though are fierce in their independance, are more under our control. For the folk, they obey the commands of my father and his lords because they are fellow Marchar, descended from the ancient wandering clan, and until recently, these families were protected by the Margrave only, as they wandered from place to place seeking a new home. They are also loyal to him because he is their Prince, their Chief...until he passed that title to me, when he took the throne of the Federation. There is also the South to consider, which, despite being peaceful and well run by those temporary governments in place at this time, needs a great deal of work, both to merge the Fuyo-Clann lands with the Nordic ones, and break down the racial barriers that could spring up there. The south is ruled by a mixture of rulers, most of the towns having elected a figure to represent them, or else being run by a local baron. An upcoming vote will decide on the governing system of the south, but for now, the Fuyo-Clann are happy to live in the peaceful southern cities, places of music and art, and the Franzharians and Norns (the old Nordlanders) have settled in the country, sometimes building cities, sometimes becoming farmers. We shall see what will become of them for the future.
"As to our military, it is fierce, and it is active. The harsh training Marines recieve, as well as our Air Corps and "Home Guard" (National Guard) forces, is all for the better protection of our peaceful interior. Although service is mandatory, most young men and women serve in the Home Guard, living most of their days as regular citizens, with regular calendar events and training for military purposes. The Marines are a different breed...but you will see, when you get here!
"I thank you for your positive response to my father's invitation. We eagerly await you in Camberlain.
"Signed, the Margravine Liselle".
