Reuters- Boomtown to String Up Smugglers!

Earlier today President Firestorm of Boomtown released a short statement addressing the capture of three smugglers of opiates. Just last week three smugglers were captured at Boomtown International Airport by security officers and found to have in their possession nearly a kilo of herion divided among the three. President Firestorm stated, "Smugglers will not be tolerated and the full force of the law will be brought into play. Elements of this particular case are proving troubling due to the young age of two of the captured smugglers."

The three smugglers are a family of three who stated they were approached by two men during a lay over outside of the country and offered a large sum of money to hand carry three small packages through Boomtown's customs. The father, 43 years old, quickly agreed and placed two of the packages in his 12 year old son and 10 year old daughter's bags. With the new legislation already signed by President Firestorm he now faces dealing with the moral implications.

In his statement Firestorm stated, "These three citizens of The Republic broke the law. The law will be enforced and whatever sentences the court deems fit to impose will be carried out. However, given the young age of the children and their lack of understanding and knowledge of their actions being crimes I'm going to request that the charges be dismissed and I will be cautioning the Prosecutor's Office against such excessive zeal in the future." While the children go free the father isn't so fortunate. By his on statement the father implicates himself in the crimes of attempting to smuggle opiates into Boomtown.

President Firestorm commented on this by saying, "It pains me to break up a family in such a manner. However, justice must be done, but I fear a greater injustice be perpetuated. I plan to seek the counsel of Sargun of The Republic in this matter prior to formally deciding the fate of the father."

Esteemed Sir,

Last week three of your Citzens were captured attempting to smuggle opiates into my country. Full biographic details and scans of their passports are attached. You'll note that two of the captured are 10 years old and 12 years old and that they are the children of the 43 year old man who they were traveling with.

First let me assure you that both children are not being detained in our prison system. While yes some members of my security service displayed a bit to much zeal in having them transported in shackles they are not being held as prisoners at this time. Right now they are staying as guests in the home of General Kim Park and his wife Delores Park. Both are very loving people and both speak Nordic, hence the reason why they asked to have the children stay with them until this situation is sorted out.

While our laws call for the execution of opiate smugglers the children will not be charged with any crimes and are free to return to The Republic as soon as this can be expedited. I'm not keen on dumping them at your border unannounced. I'm hoping they have family who can take them in during this trying time. While I've determined that the children are to be returned as soon as possible the same can not be said of the father.

According to his own statement the father willingly agreed to accept a large cash payment to smuggle what he knew to be heroin into my country. I'm caught between my desire to not destroy a family and my desire to see justice be done. I'd like to hear your thoughts on this matter before making my final decision.

With Regards,
President Firestorm.

The USB condemns this action, saying "that any family should never be broken up, especially with child at this age. We ask that you let the father go under strict monitoring else there may be severe consequences..."

Press Conference:

Samuel Samuels of the Times Herald asks,"Any comment on the statement released by the USB?"

President Firestorm replies, "The internal policy of Boomtown is the concern of Boomtown. In this incident the young age of both the children, and not child, has prompted us to consult the home government of the three by attempting to open communications with Sargun of the Republic. It must be pointed out that the father confessed, of his own free will, to secreting a large quantity of heroin in his son and daughter's bags in exchange for the promise of a large sum of money. Despite this act of parental negligence, and despite the fact that all passengers on aircraft flying into Boomtown are warned of Boomtown's policy on the smuggling of opiates, the father choose to go ahead with his plan." Firestorm stops and takes a drink of water before continuing,"Any attempt at dictating the internal policy of Boomtown will not be regarded as a friendly act and will be treated accordingly."

My dear man,

It pains me to hear of this decision. I apologize for my delayed response - it is almost easier to gain information on non-citizens than it is on our own people. Johnathan Withers, age fourty-three, is not employed. He has a long record of drug-related convictions, dating back to age eighteen. I am saddened to say that he also has no home, no wife and no family. Johnathan would be a nobody if it were not for the children.

These biographical details that you gave us were falsified - not by you, by Johnathan. The address he provided was the house of a wealthy businessman who had six adopted children; his wife is dead. I cannot say how much pain it causes me to say that he will not be missed in the Republic. The large cash payment, I believe, was to help his children and the address provided was to give his children a better home - his death would ensure he would never have to face the pain of abandoning his children again.

I cannot say no to the laws of another nation. However, the children, Jack and Jamie, were not willing participants. They also have no home, no money and no family to go to. I have a request of General Kim Park and Delores Park - please take the children in. They have a life, they have a future, and they have a home.

Thank you,
King Sargun.

Esteemed Sir,

The entire situation saddens me to the extreme. Given the new information about this gentleman is it possible that the children were not even his to begin with?

With Regards,
Firestorm

"A good drug smuggler is a dead one. Try legalizing the softer drugs and making government monopoly on them: We made good money and drug usage dropped drastically within a few years."

My dear man,

The children are his. There is no doubt about it - every male citizen of the Republic serves three years in the military at age eighteen. He is required, at ages twenty, thirty and fourty to register his immediate family in case he is called to service again and we need to contact family. Along with that, a proof was sent. We know he registered because without registration his family is ineligible for any social security benefits - and he did this for his children.

I have no regrets sending this career criminal to death - but I do regret the loss of a future for these children. The Republic has a huge population and our foster system is in shambles, they would be much better off in Boomtown.

Thank you,
King Sargun.

OOC: The softer drugs are legalized, I dunno about a government monopoly on them though.

Press Conference:

Sara Iwannafunt of the New Republic asks, "What is your reply to Kaiser Marteen's statement?"

"The good Kaiser is more than welcome to wander by Boomtown, should he feel the urge, and partake in our already legal cannabis and hallucinogenics. I do myself on occasion."

He grins. "Oh, I don't do any drugs...other than my beloved alcohol. Though, on a second thought, I believe Women should be categorized as drugs as well. Maybe after the current war I'll drop by for some beers."

I will speak to General Park Kim myself regarding this matter. I do not think he will object to fostering the children as his wife has already been hounding my office for food and toys the children might be more comfortable with. I will extend citizenship, by Executive order, with the stipulation that their Republic citizenship remain legal as we normally do not recognize dual citizenship. When they come of age they can either avail themselves to the educational systems of Boomtown or return with our kindest regards and affection to the Republic to seek their fortunes.

The father's fate will be decided by myself shortly.

At anytime please feel free to call upon the services of my office should you need them.

Greatest Thanks,
President Firestorm

A week later

A delivery van pulls up to the residence of Kaiser Marten's and the driver says, "I've got a delivery of several cases of soju and this letter."

Please accept this small gift from my native land of Korea. This heady drink is best drank by the shot and works well for solving difficult diplomatic crises over soju shots and sam sup ghal (Korean style BBQ). This particular vintage comes from my personal estates and has won several awards for its fine quality.

Enjoy!
President Firestorm.

I won't be replying to the letter anytime soon, I'm thinking of something scandalous.
