Okay, i'm a Young Leader in a scout group, that's attached to a church (majority of scout units are, it's just to do with age).

Now, today, we had Remembrance Sunday - the idea is that the group turns out for it, we do a bit of flag moving, and hymn singing.

Overall, we have about.. 110 people in our group, of all ages.

We had 5 Beavers, out of 40 beavers

We had 2 Cubs, out of 32 Cubs

We had 0 Scouts out of 36 Scouts

No explorer scouts, as the unit was disbanded, due to some rather.. unsavoury actions by one of the leaders, and the other couldn't hack it after he returned from Afghanistan (Medic, having to see all the terrible stuff in the hospitals over there... not good).

So overall, thats 7, out of 110 people.

Disgusted? I sure as hell am. :(

That is really really bad, next year make it mandatory to show up, it won't get everyone but the numbers will go up (I can guarantee the same would have happened to my squad in Cadets but it was mandatory so only a couple would miss it and they would get talked to at the next meet).

Oh believe me - i would LOVE to make it mandatory. But the Scout Leader is very anti-war, anti-military.

Likely as much, he didn't tell them.

But you know, the poppies, and the ceremony last night would give some clue dont'cha think?

<_<

The Scout Leader sounds like a tool. Nothing wrong with being anti-war but for that to make you anti-remembrance or to use your personal feeling towards the military to stop for reduce participation in the remembrance day parade is just wrong.

I only had half the explorers in my Group (I'm not technically the leader, but as the oldest I tend to get put in charge of stuff). The reason I suspect is only half of us actually own the dress uniform. And one of the guys that turned up had bought the network rather than the explorer uniform.

It wasn't quite a traditional parade unfortunately. Tradition dictates that it should be raining so hard that the song sheet disolves, but you just can't trust the weather these days.

I was happy today, i work at Sainsbury's and when the PA came on saying it was 11am there was instant and complete silence for 2 minutes. The hum of the refrigerators and the inevitable wailing child were the only sounds.

Aye, we had the joy of wailing kids at the back of the church.

And we had it peeing it down with rain, so it kinda matched the mood. And it turns out - the Leader DIDN'T tell them about the Parade.

-sigh-

Apparently overall turnout for parades was higher than in previous years and the Poppy Appeal has raised more money than ever before.

But I thought the anniversary of the Armistice wasn't for another day or so?

I was wondering what all the poppies in London were about. Pretty sad that they wouldn't even remember those who died.

6-8 year olds. Ironically, they had the biggest turn out.

So it appears that Mastab likes little boys. Well, that explains a lot...

And by unsavoury actions, i mean getting drunk, setting fire to damaged tents, and generally being an idiot.

Oh I remember the parades, they were quite fun back when I was in the Marine cadets.

Wait, thats unsavoury? By that account we should have ditched our leaders along time ago. My current explorer leader once set fire to someones hand. One of the Networks who acts as a leader once nearly blew up the unit with water on a chip pan fire. We also didn't dare show our faces for 5 years after the bra in the flag incident. Then there was the time I was nearly killed by a golden syrup can left on a fire, and the time I fell down a cliff (which the leaders encouraged me to climb down) and got what us probably a life long scar on my arm.

Being vauguely stupid is what scoutings about, although the exploding gas canister incident did get one of our leaders removed.
