So, here's my issue. We're going on vacation and staying at our family's vacation home. As most of the people who stay here are over, say 50 and not big computer users, there is no wireless network. (Gasp!) However, my Dad is bringing is Dell XPS M1530 laptop. It has built in Wi-Fi. If I was to plug in an ethernet cable, could I set up a WiFi network so I could use my laptop?
Thanks

If you plug into a cord into your laptop, it's wired internet. What would you need wireless for anyways?
If you need wireless regardless (why, if you have wired...?), you need a wireless router to send out the signal. If it has an antenna, it's probably capable of wireless internet, screw with it from there.

I am a little confused on your question...are you asking if you could use your dad's laptop on the wired internet, and then connect to your dad's laptop in order to get on the internet?
No, I should have been clearer. My dad has a laptop, and I have a laptop. I want to plug the wire into the laptop, and use it as a router, so I can connect my laptop to it's network.

Well, a laptop is a laptop and a router is a router, two different things unless your Laptop specifically states that its network adaptor doubles as router, which is something I've never heard of.
Actually, I figured it out. I can use it to set up an ad-hoc network. Plenty of computers can do it. My mac desktop can do it, but we're not bringing that.

It looks like your question has been answered already, but I think you can piggyback an internet connection off of a computer with internet.
