Quote

An eight-year-old boy has sparked an unlikely outcry in Sweden after failing to invite two of his classmates to his birthday party.

The boy's school says he has violated the children's rights and has complained to the Swedish Parliament.

The school, in Lund, southern Sweden, argues that if invitations are handed out on school premises then it must ensure there is no discrimination.

The boy's father has lodged a complaint with the parliamentary ombudsman.

He says the two children were left out because one did not invite his son to his own party and he had fallen out with the other one.

The boy handed out his birthday invitations during class-time and when the teacher spotted that two children had not received one the invitations were confiscated.

"My son has taken it pretty hard," the boy's father told the newspaper Sydsvenskan.

"No one has the right to confiscate someone's property in this way, it's like taking someone's post," he added.

A verdict on the matter is likely to be reached in September, in time for the next school year.

Who gave anyone the Right To Be Invited To Your Classmates' Birthday Party, when, and WHY?

Seriously, I'm worried for Sweden if those PC idiots are being put into teaching rolls over there. Are we honestly to start beleiving not inviting your whole class to a birthday party is now discrimination?

Where do these Politically Correct nuts come from? :((

He didn't like the kids, so he didn't invite them.

I do not see the problem, not at all.

I actually like Swedish society, they are very progressive.

Yeah, this is pretty weird. Scarily enough, almost half of the people who have voted on Swedens largest news site agree with it. People are pretty afraid of discrimination here, but this is just surreal. The story has been moved to the archives there though and it's pretty much impossible to find anything from there.

Most European countries are progressive (at least compared to the US) but this is just ridiculous. Maybe if he said he didn't want to invite them because their Norwegian or German or something I'd understand but thats just stupid. To discriminate you have to have something to discriminate someone about. Plus , you invite whoever you want and don't want to the party!

as reported, this seems like a really weird decision. I think I'd have to see what the background is before making a judgment on it. At the moment it seems like one of those half-invented stories the tabloid press throws up so they can scream about "political correctness gone mad"

I lol'd. That's rich. But I can't really see that this makes perfect sense. Was the kid like flaunting the invitation at the other kids (and if he was, why the hell would the government need to be involved? Wouldn't the school principal suffice?)

As you say, it's his party! If someone had a party and didn't invite any black or muslim people, or gay people, or women that's their choice (and probably reflective of their social circle).

For instance, my stag party last year was attended by 13 men. Should I be taken to court for not inviting any women? No.

Ridiculous. I thought the UK was PC gone mad (one of the major reasons I left the country) until I read this.

I have also been ostracized from social gatherings in Sweden due to the fact I live outside of their country. We should file a class-action lawsuit for this gross display of xenophobia.

I'm in. I better put a suit on though, the bikini would not look good in court. Plus the old man would not appreciate it. When we win though, the compensation could go on a beach party in Cornwall, no Swedes allowed! :P

You're right. P.C. was the trend, and now Anti-P.C. seems to be in. I'd also like to see the background info, but as it appears now, I'd nuke Sweden if I could.
