Anyone can attend, so it isn't technically segregation, but it does kinda seem like a step backwards....

EDIT: Sorry, just re-read, and its not official until the vote on Tuesday.

Great, more of the "poor me, I should get free money because my great great great grandfather was a slave" crap that will surely spew from the mouths of the teachers.

Except...yanno...American slave history and reparations have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS.

This isn't going to go well. Soon enough ever minority is going to want their own schools. This is going to cause a ton of money to be spent for very little reason.

Strange, when American cities rearranged their schools ethnicity populations because they were redoing bus routes, and some schools had almost all whites, it was racist. Yet when this happens and schools are black focused, it's accepted. All men are created equal, just some more then others.

Other than the fact their ancestors moved to Canada to escape said slavery (via the Underground Railroad).

Why should Canadians whos ancestors didn't support slavey have to make amends for something the Americans did?

Either way, my above statement will come from somewhere.

I like that book too :)

Far from being segregationist, Wilson said, the school is about making blacks and other marginalized students feel part of the school system.

That's just ridiculous; they assume that the environment for black people is predominantly bad which is already racist.

If they want to be fair, don't place any emphasis on any ethnic group.

That's a good question. Perhaps you should ask it to the person who opened this school.

But they already do. We already have a separate, government funded Catholic school board here in Ontario. I *believe* they let you choose on your taxes which school board you want money to go to.

This could end up being the same sort of thing.

That's not their reasoning. Slavery has nothing to do with this besides SOME of the African-Canadians having their origins in the American slaves.

Really? Shows what I know. Then again, I don't pay taxes. Well, I do. But they give me all the money back, cause I don't make that much.

Why are they going to use symbols of African culture to teach maths? Do they use the skulls of slaves to teach maths in Canada normally?

IIRC, the only reason why it was brought back to public funding in Ontario in the 1980's was because of lobbying and such. But apparently publically funded Catholic schools are guaranteed in the BNA Act or something like that.

I wonder what the students will think when a non-black student makes valedictorian, like the white kid at the black-dominated college did this year.

They aren't making amends to anyone, statistics say that black children aren't doing as well as other children in education so they are seeing if a majority black school would make a difference.

I just sit and laugh at this crap. First there is a fight for integration and now there is the fight for segregation. Just proves that the "human rights" movement is never fully appeased. They always have to have something to complain about.
