Samantha watched Evan McDowell's inauguration speech on the television with limited interest. She had decided that her brother did not have the oratorical skills to make the speech that was needed, so she had set out to do it. Her brother's name may have carried more weight, but Samantha still thought he was an idiot.

When the President concluded, Samantha gave herself a once-over in the mirror. She needed to look as regal as possible for this address. A loud countdown began to sound throughout her residence. She stood slowly on her heels, and walked towards the door. Her aides had alerted the press that there would be a major announcement, but she had no idea how many reporters may attend.

The door was opened for her and she walked through, carefully calculating her steps to arrive at the podium with an even amount of steps. Her husband was at the podium to introduce her, "Ladies and Gentlemen, Samantha, Countess of Lanier!"

The crowd erupted into polite applause as the group then took their seats. Samantha maintained a pleasant smile, "Thank you," she smiled. "I come before you today to inform you of a great injustice against our people. My grandfather, and our King, Josef I, passed in 2028. The Queen, Stephanie ascended to the throne in four years later in 2032, pointing to a [url="http://forums.cybernations.net/index.php?showtopic=1100&st=100#entry1188880"]news article[/url] from 2009 that claimed the Commune had passed the Equal Primogeniture Act of 2009."

"The only records of the passage of this act appear in this newspaper clipping. The Commune has no records of the passage of this act. Now, it is possible that the archives may have been lost or damaged during the countless rising and falling of the Maritime Republic, but doesn't it seem odd that it took four years for the Queen to 'remember' that this act was passed? Why did she not attempt to claim the throne earlier?" The reporters in the audience were writing in their notepads furiously.

"Using my powers as head of the judiciary in the County of Lanier, I declare that the Equal Primogenture Act of 2009 is invalid without further records of its proof." A fire burned in Samantha's eyes as her voice became increasingly intense, "The County of Lanier withdraws its recognition from Stephanie as the Soverign of J Andres, and recognizes Richard, son of Josef I, as the true heir and King of J Andres!"

She stepped back momentarily to take a breath before returning to the microphone, "Thank you," she said quickly. She gave the crowd another smile and wave, and then turned about-face and returned to the door from which she came.

After the conclusion of Samantha's speech, her brother Benjamin would give a similar speech in Mercton Cuidad, and then her father in Providence. Samantha watched all the speeches unfold on her television. Everything was beginning to fall into place.

[b]MERCTON[/b] -- [url="http://cybernations.wikia.com/wiki/Benjamin_Mercton"]Earl Benjamin[/url] has announced that the [url="http://cybernations.wikia.com/wiki/Anchor_Security"]Kommissazul[/url] would be dispatched to the Counties of Providence, Mercton, and Lanier to establish order. The Kommissazul was purchased by [url="http://cybernations.wikia.com/wiki/Anchor_Security"]Richard the Pretender[/url] in 2017. The Kommissazul was used extensively during the second and third Maritime Republics to extend the power of the executive branch when Richard Mercton was the President. Richard remains the owner of the Kommissazul, technically, Anchor Security. The Kommissazul are easily identified by their brilliant blue armbands.

There has been no official response from the J Andres government over the deployment of the Kommissazul, or even on the speeches made yesterday by the Mercton family. The Royal family has also not issued a comment on the claim of Richard to the throne.

The Anchor Times legal team has been attempting to determine what legal ground the Earls and Countesses have to declare "royal law," and it currently appears there is no legal ground for the move.

However, instead of the J Andres military, [url="http://cybernations.wikia.com/wiki/Ares_Security"]Ares Security[/url] has been dispatched to the Duchy borders. It is still unknown what this endorsement means as it is coming from the executive branch vice the royal judiciary as with the other three declarations.

"Richard is actually doing this then?" the [url="http://cybernations.wikia.com/wiki/Stephanie_Mercton"]Queen[/url] asked as she paced the castle's floors. Her daughter, [url="http://cybernations.wikia.com/wiki/Katherine_Al_Kaled"]Princess Katherine[/url] watched her with worry from the comfort of a chair. "Why now?" the Queen asked, "He is nearly as old as I am."

The princess rose from the chair and walked to her mother's side, "I think it may have less to do with Richard and more to do with his children. [url="http://cybernations.wikia.com/wiki/Samantha_Mercton"]Samantha[/url] has never liked me much, and there must be a reason for her having so many children."

Queen Stephanie walked over to the balcony overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, "I've never much liked this position you know. This whole monarch business. Your grandfather was a fool to create it, but that's how men are. Of course, I thought I could do some good with it in the 30's, but we all know how the Fourth Republic ended."

"We could fight back. No doubt there are men who would stand to fight in our name!"

"Katherine, I can not ask of others what I would not ask of my own kin. This crown is foolish, and I have no desire to protect it. However, my brother is a menace, and he would likely attempt to restore 'J Andres to its former glory,' and declare war on all of North America if he could." She paused as she observed some seagulls in the distance, "Richard cannot have this crown, for he would do more damage to the nation with it than without it."

"Well, if Richard is attempting to use the powers of the judiciary against us, let's turn them on him as well! Declare him and the others enemies of the states and issue arrest warrants. If it's not within our authority, who cares? They are far out stepping their own."

The Queen smiled as she quickly turned around, "Alert the press, I'll be making an announcement momentarily."

The reporters had been camping out on the front lawn of the castle for nearly two days awaiting the official royal response. So it didn't take long for them to gather, but the Queen wanted to mentally prepare herself for the speech.
"Good morning," she began. "This week has been a bit tumultuous, and I know the men and women behind the cameras have been freezing out here in the cold January wind to bring you this news, so for their sake, I'll keep this short."

"My brother Richard's claim to this throne is false and his intentions for the throne are ill. Now, while I admit that my attempt at a Fourth Republic did not succeed, it's failure was not entirely due to my own actions. My brother on the other hand, was President for both the Second and Third Republics. He has had two chances with this nation and he has run it into the ground twice."

"Now my brother and his children have declared 'Royal Law' over their counties, although it appears no such provisions exist in our laws. This is a man who is willing to put the laws aside so he can claim the one title he has never had."

"As the chief justice of the Principal Court, I have issued arrest warrants for the immediate arrest of Richard the Pretender, Earl Benjamin, and Countess Samantha. As Queen of J Andres, I declare and end to the royal law in place in the Counties of Lanier, Mercton, and Providence. Members of Anchor Security and Ares Security are reminded to heed the laws and regulations of J Andres and any violations of said laws will result in charges of treason. J Andres is and always will be a democratic nation. God Bless."

The government is still located in the nation's capital of Endor Cuidad. The troops of Richard the Pretender have not yet moved into the capital, but it is surrounded. The government has been granted protection within the Grand Duchy of Boston, but this has not yet occurred. The J Andres Government controls about half of the military's fighting force, as about half has deserted and followed General Cross (as discussed below). The Official Government continues its support for Queen Stephanie.

Deals with the House of Kensington-Annan have placed the military equipment of Annan Enterprises at their disposal, giving the House of Mercton much of the military power in the conflict.

The Duchy of Boston is the nation's most populous region and many of the military members who did not agree with the leadership of General Cross returned home to defend their home region. Former President, and Duke Ben Richards is the region's leader and he has opened the region to refuges from the surrounding areas and has offered protection to both the royal family and the government of J Andres. Ben Richard desires for the nation to return to it's prior state; however, in the mean time, he is concerned with the protection of the Grand Duchy of Boston and is confident that the conflict between Stephanie and Richard will work out in the end.

The People's Maritime Republic (PMR) is comprised of the westernmost, and the most communist regions. The J Andres military was withdrawn from much of the region to protect the capital from the forces of hte House of Mercton. As such Governor Phillip Gordon established the PMR Defense Force to protect the interest of the west in a similar manner to what Ben Richards did with the Grand Duchy. Control over Lanier is disputed with the House of Mercton as many of the people are communist and support the PMR, but the countess is Samantha Mercton. Many of the Communist Senators have withdrawn from the J Andres Commune and are focused on running the affairs of the PMR. This has put Dimitri Egorov at odds with his son Nicholas, the current Premier, who is committed to keeping the nation together. The PMR has established that the monarchy and system of peerages must be abolished. Have offered asylum to the Duchess of Rossingol and the rest of the Annan (but not Kensington-Annan) for their continued support of the communist cause and in memory of former President Adrik Annan.

"It's nicer than what you had when you were with the Army!" [url="http://cybernations.wikia.com/wiki/William_Hahn"]William Hahn[/url] shouted over the humming of the rotors. "We will have Endor Cuidad in a matter of hours. With the Albatrosses in the air we likely won't even need to fire a single missile."

General Cross agreed with the first part of Hahn's statement, the military arms provided by Annan Enterprises far exceeded the military's capabilities when he was commander of the J Andres forces. However, Hahn was a politician who didn't know the first thing about combat, but as the head of Ares Security, Cross was stuck with him.

Cross joined up with Richard Mercton's crew because he was sick of the ineffective leadership of President McDowell. It would only be a matter of time before there was another Providence, another attack that J Andres would not be ready for. Cross had seen his home destroyed in 2033 after the nuclear attack, and vowed to never let something like that happen again. Richard Mercton may be a self-center egotistical maniac, but the leadership that he preaches is efficient and effective. It always helped too that Cross was promised riches, fame, and the whole nine yards for bringing himself and all the troops he could muster to the Mercton side.

The helicopters landed and Prince Richard stepped out of one of them and began walking towards a brick building. He scanned the crowd for a moment and then waved his hand at Cross and Hahn. The two men walked briskly to meet the prince.

Attention All.
The J Andres Government has strong intelligence supporting an attack on Endor Cuidad sometime after nightfall tonight.

Although the embassies of Embassy Circle and Bethesda Way are not anticipated to be targets, it is recommended that all diplomatic staff evacuate the embassies immediately. The Department of Foreign Affairs will be providing shuttle transport within the hour to accommodate all embassy staff. The shuttles will travel to the Grand Duchy of Boston, a safe location. Diplomats that wish to return to their home territories can be routed to an airport after arrival in Boston.

For the Residents of Endor Cuidad, refrain from traveling after dark. Gather food and supplies and prepare to shelter in place for the duration of the attack. Public transportation systems have had all fares lifted until 4PM if you desire to leave the city. The public transit system will be shutting down immediately at 4PM.

The President and members of Commune are being evacuated to Boston, which shall serve as the temporary capital.

Georgian diplomatic staff and security will not be evacuating Endor Cuidad. Any attack on the Georgian embassy or personnel will be considered a declaration of war and acted upon as such with the full might of the Revolutionary People's Army of Georgia. Those serving in the embassy will be ordered to wait for identification from possible unfriendlies before opening fire, but will not hesitate to use lethal force if deemed necessary.

We in Tbilisi hope that your soldiers will properly identify themselves and wait for Georgian security personnel to do the same. If it is necessary, we can forward the radio frequencies security personnel in the embassy are using to avoid possible casualties.

[url="http://cybernations.wikia.com/wiki/Evan_McDowell"]President Evan McDowell[/url] gave the city one last glance before he boarded the transport bus headed towards Boston.

"This is crazy s***, is it not?" [url="http://cybernations.wikia.com/wiki/Nicholas_Egorov"]Premier Egorov[/url] asked the President as he stepped on board. Many of the other Communist senators had abandoned the city days ago, headed to their homes in the People's Maritime Republic; McDowell was appreciative of Egorov's company.

The President nodded, "Yes, it sure is." He stared out the window as the buildings of the government buildings faded into the apartment buildings of the city's outskirts. "I just don't get it. Richard has led the nation before and failed miserably before. I don't understand how people choose to follow him into disaster yet again."

The young Premier turned to face the President, "He has the one thing which you lack." The President inched a little closer in his seat. Egorov continued, "He has a name. The people of this country would follow a man to the end of the earth if his name was Mercton. And this is the supreme disadvantage that the children of the Queen find themselves in. No one will dispute that Princess Katherine is easy on the eyes, but imagining the crown falling to someone without the Mercton name is a little tougher to imagine."

The Premier paused for a moment, "Of course there are others who say that you lack the balls to make real decisions and take action and as we can clearly see, even in his old age, it appears Richard's are working just fine."

The President scowled, and Egorov rebutted, "But as I said, those are the opinions of others."

The sounds of explosions could be heard in the distance.

Egorov turned around to try to see out the back of the bus. "I hope you like Boston, Mr. President. I have a feeling we might be there for a while."

The President turned to face the back of the bus as well. The convoy stretched out behind the bus. There was a troop transport vehicle (TTV) behind the bus, followed by another bus carrying other government personnel and then three additional TTVs. The President saw the worry in Egorov's eyes as he looked towards the city, "Don't worry Nick, we have enough men with us, we should be able to make the Grand Duchy safely."

The humming of helicopter blades silenced everyone on the bus. McDowell quickly yelled, "Everyone down on the floor, faces away from the windows." He threw himself on the seat himself, "They know its a government convoy, but it's best if they don't know who is on each bus."

The President forced himself to recall countless briefings from Minister Rasmussen on the capabilities of Thames Rotorcraft helicopters. "If Richard is getting his birds from the Annan's, then they must be the CH-06. They are meant to move troops and cargo, not to shoot up buses. I think they've only got machine guns, no rockets or anything." McDowell looked for some sort of confirmation from the others on the bus.

Instead, the TTV behind the bus burst into flames as it was struck with a rocket. Nicholas Egorov turned to the President, "I think you may have gotten your species of birds mixed up."

The President stared out the back window as the other government bus attempted to swerve to avoid the flaming TTV. The bus skimmed a telephone pole and crashed into a parked car.

Kommissazul jeeps quickly arrived and began ushering their new prisoners off the government bus and into the jeeps. There was little McDowell or Egorov could do but watch as the accident scene slowly drifted into the distance as their bus sped towards the Grand Duchy of Boston.

Rumors have stated that Princess Katherine and her children had fled the castle for the Grand Duchy; however, there was no word on the whereabouts of the Queen herself.

Richard looked out at the ocean and wondered if the outlines in the distance were warships, likely from the American Commonwealth. It would be impossible to tell from this distance. Apparently, Benjamin saw them too, "This no-fly zone is ridiculous. We would have been here yesterday if our helicopters weren't grounded, and we wouldn't have lost so many men on the bridge either."

Richard shook his head, "In time Benjamin. The new helicopters were an advantage, but we still have the technological edge. We can't risk the Commonwealth meddling in our affairs yet either. Combined, the Grand Duchy and the People's Maritime Republic outnumber us, and the Commonwealth's military is stronger than all of three groups put together. Once we establish order within our borders, the Commonwealth can be appeased diplomatically, we don't need to--"

"SIR!" on of the Kommissazul soldiers shouted from the steps of the castle. The three Mercton's turned towards the steps to see the Queen, with her hands bound, led by the soldiers.

"Lady Maria only wants the seat of the Grand Duchy! She would not overthrow her Emperor!" Richard shouted.

The sound of a gunshot silenced the Queen and the others. The Queen fell to her knees as she clutched at her chest.

Samantha returned her pistol to the holster on the inside of her leg, "I never liked her much."

Richard ran to the Queen's side. His face was still in disbelief.

The Queen looked deep into Richard's eyes, "I hope." She struggled to complete her sentences, "I hope you're happy, brother."

A single tear slid down Richard's face. For years he had dreamed of stealing the throne from his older sister, but he never imagined her dead. He turned to his daughter, "Why did you kill her?"

Samantha put on a display of surprise, "Really Dad, what else did you expect to do? Did you really think she would just hand over the crown and she could live happily ever after in the castle with us?" Samantha shook her head in disgust. "I imagine you will want her buried properly, in the royal cemetery then?"

Richard nodded.

Samantha turned to her brother, "Ben, give me a hand. Let's move [i]her Majesty[/i] inside for now." She motioned to one of the soldiers, "You come along too. Need someone to hold the doors open."

Benjamin, Samantha, and one soldier disappeared into the castle. Richard faced the ocean. The January breeze was still frigid.

The sound of gunshots rang out through the castle walls. Richard ran as fast as his age would allow him into the castle to see the commotion.

Richard arrived at the scene to see Samantha sitting on the floor, out of breath, leaning up against the wall, with her pistol on her lap. Benjamin lay in a pool of his own blood and the soldier had his finger on the trigger of his gun and a bullet wound through his forehead.

Richard knelt down next to his son and felt for a pulse--he was already gone. He turned to his daughter, "What the hell happened?"

Samantha pointed a blood-covered finger at the dead soldier and in between rushed breaths she said, "Loyalist...to...Queen."

Her father turned back to the soldier and Samantha's face revealed a smile. She collected herself quickly, "What do you say we put that crown on your head, Dad?"

It appears that Lady Maria is concerned about the security of Annan Enterprises assets in Rossingol. An attack last night left the Annan Arms facility in ruins, with about three-quarters of manufacturing equipment destroyed or requiring major repairs.

Yesterday, the American Commonwealth declared their support of the Boston Government, and announced that they may step into the conflict if they deem it necessary. No official response from either Emperor Richard or President McDowell has been received at this time, but both are expected to make speeches later in the day.

Fear is now high in the Grand Duchy, a territory thought to be safe from the horrors of the rebellion. "Although the battle in Attleboro was disappointing today, the republic is far from finished," President McDowell said in a statement released from Boston this afternoon. There have been reports of troop movements in the north, likely foretelling the Grand Duchy's next move.

Jacob Cross could look out over the bay and see the armies of the People's Maritime Republic and Grand Duchy of Boston on the banks, awaiting further orders. The Imperial forces had been retreating for months, ever since the retreat of Annan Enterprises. Men had been deserting the Imperial army as it became clear that the Empire would not stand. Even now, the Imperial Army controlled only the provinces of Newport and Providence. The elected government had returned to Endor Cuidad last week.

Jacob Cross was angry at himself for picking the losing side, but the war was not lost yet. The Emperor had plans tomorrow, Jacob only hoped that they were good ones.

NEWPORT

 

The explosions of the incoming bombs resonated throughout the castle. [url=http://cybernations.wikia.com/wiki/Samantha_Mercton]Samantha[/url] found herself at a crossroad and would soon need to decide whether she would flee the castle or stand by her father.

 

Her father refused to leave, much as his pathetic sister had done before Samantha killed her, and remaining in the castle was a likely death sentence. Richard stood near the windows, watching the proceedings on the lawn below.

 

"I am afraid that our time with the throne has come to an end, Samantha," he said, removing the crown from his head as if to cherish it for the last time.

 

"It doesn't need to be this way father. Come with me, we shall flee. There are still many who are friendly to us. Take it slow and make our way to Mexico or something. It's warm all year there," she pleaded.

 

"I have spent too many years of my life trying to wear this crown," he said, as he placed it back on his head, "for me to give it up so easily. If the children of Canguru want it, they will need to pry it from my cold, dead hands!" Richard looked into his daughter's eyes and saw a little flicker of hope become extinguished as he talked. "You, however, should go!"

 

Samantha didn't need to be told twice. She gave her father a hug, reaching her hand up to let her fingers touch the golden crown which she longed to wear herself, and then she descended to the lower levels of the castle. There were numerous tunnels and she would find a way out that didn't lead to death at the hands of the Andrean Army.

NEWPORT

 

 

Lieutenant Thomas Malvern led his group through the vast hallways of Castle Real.

 

"And I thought this place looked big on the outside!" one of his men chirped from the rear.

 

"Shut it," he commanded. Lieutenant Malvern was not pleased that his group was assigned to sweep the castle. Everyone knew that if the Emperor had any brain cells he would have fled the castle. Instead, the Lieutenant now lead a group of 20 men on a guided tour through J Andres most expensive residence. Orders were to ensure that the castle was not looted, but the Lieutenant didn't expect to be able to control his men from that.

 

"Throne room is up these stairs," shouted another man, now leading the way. Malvern nodded and the group followed the soldier. The group formed up at the top of the stairs and moved through the door in the proper formation.

 

As Malvern spotted the Emperor in the throne, his jaw dropped.

 

"Well, Josef be damned!" one of the men exclaimed.

 

The group exchanged glances with Malvern, awaiting his command. The Lieutenant reached into his pocket and pulled out a few cable ties, "Looks like we will be leaving here with something after all." One of his men raised their gun, but Malvern motioned with his hand, "Alive."

CONSTITUTIONAL LIMITS ON MONARCHY IMPOSED

 

ENDOR CUIDAD -- The J Andres Commune and the President have successfully prevented another royal rebellion such as the one that occurred earlier in the year. The Monarchy has been removed from the judicial branch of government and will be restricted to only serving as the head of state. Nicholas Egorov, Premier of the Commune was overjoyed, "The west has been asking for limits to the royal power for years. I am pleased to see these changes enacted."

 

President McDowell also appointed Dimitri Egorov, father of Nicholas as the Minister of Domestic Affairs. "When we reformed the nation in 2053, we thought that the Commune could handle the responsibilities of the Domestic Affairs Department. It turns out that this is not the case and it will be best with a dedicated department for this once again." Many analysts see this as the President's attempt to appease the western regions that formed the People's Maritime Republic.

 

With the constitutional amendment passed, it is anticipated that the coronation of Princess Katherine will occur in the coming weeks.

QUEEN CROWNED AT CORONATION CEREMONY

 

Her Majesty, The Queen Katherine

 

NEWPORT -- The former Princess of Puerto Pacis has ascended to the throne of J Andres. Queen Katherine is the daughter of Queen Stephanie, and the granddaughter of King Josef I.

 

With the recent constitutional amendments, Katherine will be the first monarch with limited authority. Her Majesty's royal duties will include serving as the Head of State of J Andres. The citizens of J Andres are pleased that the nearly year-long conflict has ended and the monarchy has been restored. It is expected that Richard Mercton and Jacob Cross will soon face trial for charges of treason. It is unknown if others will be charged.

FORMER EMPEROR FOUND NOT GUILTY IN MURDER OF QUEEN SISTER

 

Former Emperor Richard remained quiet for much of the court proceedings

 

ENDOR CUIDAD -- Attorneys representing the former Emperor have succeeded in convincing a jury that there is not enough evidence to charge Richard Mercton with murder charges related to the death of his sister, the former Queen Stephanie.

 

Richard's daughter, Samantha, Countess of Lanier testified that the Queen was murdered by her brother, Benjamin. Benjamin was similarly killed the same day. Richard and Samantha are the only living witnesses to the Queen's death, leaving very little evidence for the prosecution to present in trial.

 

Richard, and former General Jacob Cross, will face treason charges after the new year.
