iKrolm
With astronaut training proceeding well and the second parts launch successfully completed last week, the Economic Division has decided to release the landing location. Named the 'Plateau Selenarctos', the future home of 18 astronauts is located approximately 2000 kilometers east of the mouth of Valles Marineris at the coordinates 14° 04' 29.92" South, 11° 10' 20.74" West. This location was chosen for it's proximity to the equator for improved solar panel efficiency and for it's relative flatness while still maintaining close proximity to a number of craters for research and study. Plateau Selenarctos and the landing sight Zoomed out on the landing sight. The landing sight with respect to the rest of Mars.

iKrolm
An estimated 4.5 million Selenarctans and uncounted others across East Asia stared skyward at 10:05PM tonight as a 5 megaton hydrogen bomb detonated on the surface of the moon. To quote Ground Force General Joey Celerio in a press conference earlier today, "I hope this sends a message to the world: Selenarctos has the will and the means to defend herself against any and all threats. But I will not stand watch tonight to revel in the explosive force unleashed, nor will I take pride in the death and destruction we could bring down upon our enemies. Instead, I will stand under the light of a bomb more than 380 thousand kilometers distant in somber silence for the circumstances that led to the need for man to make such a bomb and in the profound hope that such a bomb shall not be turned on a fellow man." Final note to all governments: the bomb's location was carefully surveyed by satellite both 7 days and 12 hours before the blast to ensure the area was clear from all objects belonging to foreign entities. ***Classified instructions to SDI, Inc.:*** Alpha test successful, proceed to install Beta and Gamma warheads in 2O37-bomber compatible short-range missiles. iKrolm
The first 2 of 4 Sirena-class Attack Submarines, the were launched from the Fieres Shipyards today and after preforming a week-long series of tests the SS Sirena and the SS Gilda will undertake their maiden voyage to Singapore, accompanied by the SS Cosico and the SS Roces. After finishing stress checks in Singapore, the 4 ships preform a number of simulated combat missions lasting approximately a month before the SS Sirena and SS Gilda return to Manila leaving the SS Cosico and the SS Roces as the Selenarctan naval presence in Singapore. In other news, the Economic Division approved more than 30,000,000NSC and called for 3,500 more aid and construction workers to rebuild Mandalore. Questioned about the amount of money being spent in the region, Francis Mumar said, "Look, the vast majority of the money going to Selenarctan companies and being spent on Selenarctos-produced goods. The way I see it, this is an additional 30,000,000NSC injected into the Selenarctan economy, and where's the harm in that?"

iKrolm
Suburb Outside of Manila Nicole Alcasid walked in the middle of the street. She hated suburbs, she hated their gently curving streets, their cul'de'sacs and their manicured lawns. Hell, they had more chemicals than an industrial waste plant and yet were the pinnacle of appearances in these 'burbs. As far as Nicole was concerned, you could tell every thing you needed to know about a burb dweller from 3 things: their lawn, their car, and how long since their house had been repainted, and this neighborhood was one of the worst. Row after row of dark green grass with each blade trimmed to the millimeter, freshly waxed cars perfectly parked in the middle of each driveway and not a chip of paint missing anywhere. She could puke. So she walked in the middle of the road. Not on the sidewalk, invitingly lined on both sides by that deep green grass and a single tree in front of each house, an aesthetically pleasing street light in between every other. Throw a little chaos into the works. Someone came along, wanted to drive through? They could wait. They would wait. Something important, some critical middle-of-the-night conference call with a self-assured business man from New England or the Tahoe Republic? The would wait for her, born scum in one of the worst districts of Preh. She'd come a long way since then, but it was all the same really; it's us versus them and you find small victories where you can. Only now she could fight Nicole thought, smiling to herself. When her Ground Force application had been denied citing a 'high likelihood for mental instability', she'd felt betrayed. Here was her chance to escape from Preh, get out and do something. But now that was gone, taken from her by the very people who'd fed the dream with their oh-so-clever recruitment commercials. So when Captain Eugenio Arnaiz had approached her with an offer, to join a special force 'dedicated to the preservation of Selenarctan security', she'd declined. Maybe she'd been too polite when she declined, maybe Captian Arnaiz was getting desperate. Either way, that hadn't been the last of him and eight months later, here she was walking down the middle of a street in the middle of the night in the middle of the Manila suburbs. She had no rank. No insignia. Melchoro Diokno's organization didn't use them. Officially, he was Director Diokno of some obscure and highly-classified branch of the Selenarctan Armed Forces. Nicole didn't know the name, she wasn't cleared to know that. Didn't need to know it. She knew exactly what she needed to know and nothing more. Right now, she knew the house she was supposed to find, the man inside of it and the P229 she was to kill him with. "Make it quick," they'd told her, "but make sure he's dead. And anyone else who sees you in the act, we don't want any witnesses." Well, quick she could do. Dead too. Name of the target? She didn't need to know. So she'd looked it up. Marcos Aguinaldo. £$%&£€& communist too, no less. Not that it mattered to her what he was, she was simply the messenger. Death was the message and she would deliver. 2:01:29AM and she reached the driveway, nice Corolla parked there. Is that a fresh paint job too? She attached the silencer to her P229 and passed the time. 2:03:58AM and the power to her burb and a couple surrounding it went out. 2:04:00AM and she walked up the driveway, scarred the Corolla's paint with her Kris. 2:04:06AM and she knocked on the door. 2:04:26AM and she knocked again. 2:04:32AM and she heard movement inside. 2:04:37AM and Marcos Aguinaldo opened up the door. Four quick shots to the chest. Pop pop pop pop. She stepped back smiled faintly as the body collapsed, blood spilling across the welcome mat. Yes, you're welcome. Two more shots in the head. Frowned. She'd never liked the 9mm armor-piercing round. If you're going to kill someone, do it right. Another shot in the head just to make sure. 2:04:45 and she walked next door, careful not contaminate her shoes on that chemical-laden grass. 2:04:50 and Mrs. Aguinaldo called out, wondered if everything was okay. 2:04:52 and she used the key they'd given her to open the neighbor's car: BMW convertible no less. Somebody had style. Revved out of the driveway and down the street, speed limits be £$%&%€. She hated the burbs anyway. The Manila Times: Obituaries Marcos Aguinaldo, editor in chief of The Modern Communist and outspoken government critic, was murdered on his door step last night at approximately 2:05AM during the power outage. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the crime from seven 9mm bullet wounds: four to the chest and three to the head. A private reception followed by a public funeral is scheduled for this Sunday. Police say they are at a loss for the criminal, who left behind a two meter long score in the Mr. Aguinaldo's car and seven untraceable P229 cases before stealing the Aguinaldo's neighbor's car and fleeing. Anyone with knowledge of the crime is urged to contact the police as soon as possible. Edited November 25, 2009 by iKrolm

iKrolm
Faced with falling enlistment numbers, the Security Council voted today to enact a lottery-style draft into the armed forces. All citizens between the ages of 20 and 26 are automatically entered into the draft pool and, if drawn, are enlisted for 2 years: Six months of training, one year in active duty and six months of reserve duty. Draftees will be paid for the entire two year duration and at any time may extend the term of their enlistment. Advanced training such as heavy weapon and tank operation, etc. (and an associated three month to one year extension of training and active duty) is optional, though highly encouraged, during basic training and comes with a higher pay grade. With this move, the Security Council expects to keep the Ground Force at it's current level of 100,000 active combat personnel and 50,000 reserve personnel. iKrolm
OOC: Place holder post. Bought the air defense network so I'm gradually filling in the details when I have time. Aerial Defense Network of Selenarctos CLASSIFIED Until Further Notice Not to be released or transferred in an unencrypted format under any circumstances. Version 1A PART I:Program Goals The Aerial Defense Network was established to provide long-range, comprehensive protection against aircraft and missiles. PART II: Command Emplacements PART III: Radar Coverage To provide constant coverage, the Selenarctan Air Force maintains a combination of long range OTH and medium range radar emplacements and has access to data from several non-military installations. All military radar stations are heavily shielded from EMP blasts and are linked to the old Command Bunker, Air Force Command and fixed SAM emplacements via satellite uplink and fiber optic. The link to the old Command Bunker will be rerouted to the Strategic Command Bunker once GASP is completed. 3A: Long Range Military Radar Emplacements Primary long range radar coverage is provided by the Selenarctos designed and built Heron-Class Over the Horizon radar. The Heron radar system is able to accurately detect and track planes, helicopters and missiles at ranges from 200km to up to 4,000km. (Maximum range may vary depending on meteorological conditions.) The Air Force maintains 4 Heron stations, one facing to each of the 4 directions: north, east, south and west located near the edges of the Selenarctan landmasses. From north going clockwise: Pagudpud Station on the island of Luzon Can-Avid Station on the island of Leyte T'Boli Station on the island of Mindanao Morong Station on the island of Luzon Map of Heron-Class Radar Emplacements: (click for larger) 3B: Medium Range Military Radar Emplacements Secondary coverage is provided by a combination of 1000km directional radar stations and an omni-directional 850km station. Clockwise from north: Gattaran Station on the island of Luzon supports three directional radar stations pointing west, north and east. T'Boli Station on the island of Mindanao, in addition to a Heron emplacement, supports two directional radar stations pointing south and east. Rizal Station on the island of Palawan supports two directional radar stations pointing west and south. Silay Station on the island of Negros supports the omni-directional station. (click for larger) 3C: Medium Range Non-Military Radar Emplacements PART IV: SAM Emplacements Defensive Measures: Primary Anti-Aircraft: S-500 SAM Secondary Anti-Aircraft: PAC-3 SAM Anti-Ballistic Missile: S-500 SAM Anti-Cruise Missile: PAC-3 SAM At the time of this document's publishing, the Security Division has 2 SAM models in active service: S-500 Long-Range Surface to Air Missile Max Range: 600km Target Engagement: 10 independent targets at speeds of up to 5km/s (Mach 14.7). Launches from: Mobile or fixed platform. PAC-3 Surface to Air Missile Max Range: 160km Target Engagement: Single target at speeds of up to Mach 5. Launches from: Mobile platform. Major fixed SAM emplacements throughout Selenarctos are marked on the following map. Red lines indicate international water boundaries. Yellow dots mark the location of major cities (more information here) while red and cyan dots represent Type V emplacements. -> Red emplacements (12) have minimal aerial camouflage and the location of these is known to the population of the surrounding area though not readily advertised. -> Cyan emplacements (6) are heavily camouflaged against aerial surveillance and their locations are classified. Standard layout for a Type V emplacement: Emplacements are located at varying distances from major roads with a single, gated & guarded road into the compound. Walls, barb wire, or other protective devices (unmarked) surround the base and/or missiles launch clusters. A support area and a Missile Staging/Storage Area of varying sizes are situated along a road providing easy access to all launch sites. Roads from the Missile Staging Area lead to 5 clusters, each of which contain 6 missiles launch sites (black rectangles) of 4 missiles each (24 missiles per cluster, 120 missiles per Type V emplacement). Distances from the clusters to the Missile Staging Area vary in each location but do not exceed 1km. A small command post (located in a concrete bunker hardened against anything up through 155mm conventional artillery shells) located in the support area holds the command staff and dedicated fiber optic links with EMP-proof electronics on both ends to the closest 2 radar stations a third link to the Air Force's satellite receiver array or the Selenarctos Command Bunker, whichever is closer. iKrolm
The Security Division has completed its withdrawal of 2,000 Ground Force infantry from the Singapore Protectorate, cutting the number of troops stationed there in half. Marcelo Bonifacio, First Director of the Security Division, sends his congratulations to the Singapore Bureau of Police, which he says is able to protect most of Singapore. Bonifacio mentioned plans to withdraw an additional 1,000 troops as replacements from Acca Dacca arrive, but he refused to go into details. iKrolm
In an joint press conference today, the Security Division and Selenarctan Strategic Defense Corporation introduced the M41-A general service rifle. The M41-A is in the final stages of testing and, once completed, will become the standard rifle of the Ground Force infantry. The M41-A "Pulse Rifle", the first weapon produced by the Selenarctan Strategic Defense Corporation to make use of electronic pulse firing. As part of the standard configuration, the M41-A also features a 30mm under-barrel grenade launcher. Rifle: Ammunition: 10x24mm Caseless Fire Modes: Single, Automatic Rate of Fire: 900 rounds/min Effective range: 500m Max Range: 1,500m Magazine Capacity: 60 rounds Operation: Rotation Breech, Electric Action, Electronic Pulse Firing Mass: 4.9kg Sight: Holographic, Thermal or Laser-range finding M92A PN Grenade Launcher: Ammunition: 30x71mm Rate of Fire: 15 rounds/min (not including reload time) Effective range: 30m Max Range: 180m Magazine Capacity: 5 rounds Operation: Pump Action, Electronic Pulse Firing 10mm Caseless Round: The M41-A fires both standard and armor piercing 10mm rounds. The ammunition used is caseless i.e. without a cartridge case to contain the propellant. Instead, the projectile is encased in a solid molded block of Nitramine 50 (a nitrocelulose-based compound which is highly inert with a high ignition temperature to prevent cookoff), making it more compact that a full-length rifle round. This allows more ammunition to be carried for the same weight as conventional types, maximizing logistics. Additionally, because the projectile doesn't have to be designed to fit a case (as the propellant telescopes around it), it can be of an aerodynamic shape optimized for its speed, accuracy and penetration. Il Terra Di Agea
Classified: Research is under way to produce a 10x24mm round able to be fired in an oxygen-free environment. Current theory suggests through the addition of two chemicals that react to produce large quantities of oxygen into the propellant it would be possible to fire these shells in a complete vacuum. Progress is currently stalled, however, as the reaction must leave no significant amounts of solid byproducts in the barrel after firing. OOC: Much like Americans with the Space pen, you're going out of your way to throw money at something that there is a very simple solution to. Mainly, guns shoot in space already. All you would need is a heating mechanism (Of some sort, just needs to keep the gunpowder flammable) and some sort of wrist band so the recoil doesn't jettison your gun away when you fire (And even that would require that you barely hold on to your gun at all). The only difficulties would come from firing too well. With no air pressure, no gravity, no nothing to act on the bullet, it would hypothetically never stop (At least until it is acted upon by some outside force). As for everything else, as long as you know the couple of problems with case-less ammunition, cool stuff. (I'll remove this if you wish, for being an all OOC post.) iKrolm
OOC: OOC's no problem. I didn't know bullets already had an oxygen source, guess I'll just delete that section. And I know about the problems of caseless ammunition which is why i just quote the Nitramine 50 section off a website giving the 'stats' for the M41 from the movies and how cookoff was conveniently solved. iKrolm
CLASSIFIED: Construction has begun on the Strategic Command Bunker, designed to provide a more secure location and eventually replace the current Command Bunker underneath the Capital Building. The Strategic Command Bunker is being built 20km east of the Capitol Building, directly underneath Manila Bay. The compound will be 30m below the bottom of the bay: 20m of dirt/silt/sand followed by 10m of reinforced concrete and operate on an independent power grid containing its own nuclear reactor. The exterior shell will be fully shielded against external shock-waves and EPM blasts and a smart-air grid will reduce the danger of fires and the damage done by internal shock-waves from explosive-related pressure waves originating from within the bunker. An electric subway controlled from the the bunker will provide access to the Capitol Building and Air Force Command while 9 hidden high-bandwidth fiber cables provide constant communication to the outside and other important facilities. Also housed within the Strategic Command Bunker will be the Global-Analysis and Strategic Planning super-computer array (GASP) for use by the Security Division. The computer, which makes heavy use of Ersch Electronics' most advanced and still-classified 128-core processor, will have the approximate capacity of 100 greatly-accelerated human minds. Time Frame: Phase 1 of the the Strategic Command Bunker, completion of general construction, waterproofing, air systems and power is scheduled for completion in 2 years. Phase 2, bringing the bunker fully online and replacing the Command Bunker, is scheduled for completion 4 years from now, 2 years after Phase 1 completion. Components of GASP will first come on line within 3 years, 1 year after the completion of Phase 1. GASP will reach full capacity in approximately 5 years, plus or minus 6 months; 1 year after the completion of Phase 2.
iKrolm
The third section of the Mars Rocket II successfully launched today with the launch still on schedule for six months. Assembly, final tests and final crew training now occupy the remainder of the craft's time in orbit before it joins it's sister craft around Mars Orbit. The 18 member crew has been announced with the major difference being the (unexpected) addition of 3 Ground Force personnel to the roster. The soldiers in question, Captain Napoleon Patricio and Private IIs Romeo Abueva and Leandro Santos, are listed as base security and general labor to assist the scientists in their work. CLASSIFIED: An electronically-sealed container open able only by Captain Patricio has been added to the Mars Rocket IIs cargo manifest. Within are 4 M41-A Pulse Rifles, 2 MP7s, 1 P229 DAK and 1 SG 550 sniper rifle with a scope adjusted for martian gravity. Ammunition provides includes 2,400 10mm caseless rounds, 20 30x71mm grenades, 480 4.6x30mm rounds, 100 9x18mm rounds and 100 5.56x45mm rounds. Additional equipment includes 6 incendiary grenades, 24 frag grenades, 12 Zero-O2 plastic explosives of various sizes and 6 Zero-O2 'door-breaching' kits. These are provided for use only in the case of an emergency as determined by Captain Patricio. /CLASSIFIED
iKrolm
CLASSIFIED: With progress on the Massive-Ordnance-Penetrator only slightly behind schedule but initial tests proving successful, the government has asked the Selenarctan Defense Corporation to develop a modified MOP, the MOP-C. The MOP-C, like it's sister bomb, will weight approximately 13,600kg and contain a 2,300kg warhead. It's bomb-bay comparability will be identical to the MOP and the MOP-C will, for all practical purpose, act the same as the MOP until it hits the ground. Once it hits, unlike the MOP which lands directly on top of a bunker and forces it's way down, the MOP-C lands next to the target, drops down and punches through the side of the bunker, thereby avoiding the thickest portions of concrete.
