Many times people don't learn to appreciate things until they are gone and for Mei this was one of those things. Mealstrom would go to her and tell her that he planned on leaving the world for a time and leave control of Druk Yul to her for the time being. In the time leading up to that day she knew he was sick and needed help but she also understood they he had his own way of doing things and now he was leaving the leadership of Druk Yul to her until he was better.

 

While this was not her first time being the leader of a modern nations a lot has changed since she stepped down as Empress of Shanghai and since she was now the leader of Druk Yul for the time being she knew things were going to have to change whether she wanted them to or not.

 

As per Maelstrom's last wishes before he left King Wangchuck would crown Mei as the new Empress of Druk Yul to a huge appalause from the crowd that had gathered for the ceremony. She was no stranger to most of the world's leaders since she used to be the Empress of Shanghai and knew that many in the world may see it as Shanghai maybe trying to take control of all of Asia but in truth that is not what she wanted and she would let the world know it.  "The Emperor of Shanghai may be my son but that does not mean we will be uniting into one nation unless the people really want it that way. Druk Yul is still one of/if not the Major Power here on mainland Asia and we shall continue to protect those we are allied with while still making sure our own borders are secure against any and all foreign agressors should they try to attack us. Just because I am now the Empress of Druk Yul does not mean things will change drastically unless it is what the people want."

 

There was a loud cheer from the crowd as she finished her speech and while it looked like the people would continue to support her she knew this was only the beginning as once again it was now up to her to keep one of the strongest nations in the world in one piece while their enemies continued to approach them from all directions.

Rear Admiral T.C. Jardim d'Olival de Mendonça led the small flotilla of ships heading north in the Indian Ocean. Born in Funchal, one of the principle marine cities of the Northlands, he had spent his entire life on the sea and had recently been promoted to his first admiralship. This assignment seemed benign at first glance; he was tasked with directing Taskforce Sleeping Dragon to provide reinforcements to the Northlands vanguard that had been airlifted to several of the islands in the Indian Ocean. It was the standard operating procedure of the state to airlift several thousand marines to secure main, strategic locations in a protectorate area and assist with the landing of reinforcements, which he was providing.

 

Jardim d'Olival de Mendonça questioned the necessity of having 15,000 soldiers stationed on these islands. Why such an arbitrary number was needed to administer a protectorate had been decided by High Command and was well above his pay grade, though, so he would proceed at top speed as the more normal route between the Prince Edward Islands and Pacific Realm lay further behind. Trading posts KSH and BSH would be close by, and a secondary mission would be to make ports of call at these locations in the wake of the collapse of the Maltese state. 

 

The last reports from Northlands intelligence and the Office for Foreign Affairs had indicated the complete collapse of Druk Yul, which had led to the claims of protectorate over the Indian Ocean islands. With the security of the portion of the Atlantic Fleet he now commanded and the peoples of the protectorate in mind, he would send several reconnaissance aircraft to further scout out the islands and would reach out to attempt communications with Sri Lanka and the Maldives to assess the extent of local activity in these regions.

Mei was still adjusting to being the new leader of Druk Yul and what many of the other nations didn't seem to know is that although they were recently attacked by the Dark Claws (OOC: more on that in the Prophecies and Destinies thread) there was no real collapse of the Druk Yul government and Mei was still in control. She kept much of King Wangchuck's staff as well including Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay and Foreign Minister Yun Li who had now become one of her closest friends and advisors. "Empress there are reports of Northland forces landing on the islands in the Indian Ocean near Sri Lanka."

 

"Last time I was down there was with Maelstrom and Emperor Jesse. We used the resort on the Island as a staging ground for our plan to bring down Henry's forces in the area before he attacked Shanghai. The strategic importance of those islands is great so it is no surprise that others are looking to claim them however what they have failed to see is that the Dark Claw attacks on us have not really hurt us that much."

 

"Empress do you believe that the Northlands are working with the Dark Claw terrorists so they could take the islands themselves?"

 

"It is possible but I highly doubt it. The other nations of the world do know about the recent Dark Claw attacks and I guess they thought they had taken out our government when we were out of contact with them for a while."

 

"What do you think their thoughts are on the whole Dragon thing since the Mandarin and the Dark Claws tried to reveal the truth to the world."

 

"I dont know Li and honestly at this point I don't care. They can choose whether to believe it or not but it does not change anything to me. If they think that we are weak enough for them to just come in and try taking our territory than they have another thing coming."

 

A message would be sent to the Northlands Office of Foreign Affairs from Druk Yul Empress Mei asking why the Northlands were trying to declare protectorites over the islands which were already a part of Druk Yul territory.

The Imperium's radar would notice the transport aircraft and their traveled path. Europeans landing in the Maldives and the Lakshadweeps, yet more attempts to encroach into Asia by foreigners. The movement was noted but a reply was not decided upon until the Northlandic fleet was spotted by Imperium MQ-4C トリトン on regular patrols within the central Indian. The 1st fleet, based in Socotra would depart to meet them north of Diego Garcia. Satellite Intelligence assets would begin to scan the Maldives and Lakshadweeps for points of landing and potential camps or bases being set up for strikes if deemed required.

 

The 1st fleet would maintain radio silence and communicate only using satellites and laser based communications, when AWACS picked up the Northlandic fleet, Growlers would be sent up to begin radar and electronic jamming, which would give them a general direction of the Imperium's fleet, but not the makeup.

The Office for Foreign Affairs was quite surprised to receive a message from this Empress Mei. The Northlands had long held relations with King Wangchuck and Maelstrom, and their reported disappearance is what had precipitated any venture into the region in the first place. A conservative message would be sent back in reply.

 

Greetings Empress Mei,

 

The Northlands is unaware of any formal government in the wake of the collapse of Maelstrom Vortex's Druk Yul and we have been under the impression that these lands are currently governed by the local population, as is common throughout much of the world.

 

We assure you that these actions are not meant to be aggressive and we have not, nor intend to, be involved with the Indian mainland nor the greater region. While many of these islands you mentioned are uninhabited or only lightly populated, we would be willing to renegotiate the status of Northlandic forces in the region, especially in the more populous Sri Lanka.

Frankly, the Office was unsure if this was a prank or some crazy lady was pretending to be a leader, as forces on the ground indicated no such central government currently existed. The Northlandic troops were on sparsely populated islands which prevented the Northlands from discrediting the transmission entirely, and instead would seek to talk more with Mei and learn about the developing situation. 

 

In addition to this response, the Office would notify Jardim d'Olival de Mendonça of the communications and the Office for Security would provide updated orders. The fleet would organize into a heightened alert formation as they continued on their voyage, which would include some spreading out to prevent clustering. CAP and AWACS would be increased to provide additional information, and several satellites would be repositioned to focus on the north Indian Ocean.

"So either their government is truely stupid and are asking for a war against us and the East Asian Imperium or whatever agents they supposedly have here are totally stupid and cant tell the difference between a government collapse or a slight government change! Whichever it may be it is clear they have not thought all the way through about the situation here before trying to take those islands for themselves. It needs to be clear that we will not take their movements lightly and that they have once chance to help resolve this situation peacefully before it results in all out war!" There has been much happening here since Maelstrom left and his final act before leaving was making me the Empress in his place. King Wangchuck was also a supporter of this and although we were attacked by terrorists a little while after the coronation but there has been no government collapse as you believe. In fact most of the government is still more or less the same as it was with Maelstrom and I don't intend to change it at all unless it needs to be changed.

 

As for the islands Sri Lanka holds one of our major bases of operation in the region and as far as I know we still have a garrison stationed there. (OOC: See this thread for details on what Maelstrom did there) From our point of view those islands are still a part of Druk Yul territory so to me it almost looks like you are invading. We have an agreement with the East Asian Imperium to protect each other should we be attacked by foreign nations and its likely they are observing your forces as we speak. Like us they will do everything they can to protect Asia from foreign agressors and I believe it is in both of our best interests to find a peaceful solution to this before you give them a reason to "protect Asia from foreign invaders at all costs."

Empress Mei, 

 

Reliable reports from our forces in Sri Lanka have confirmed the lack of any soldiers or other military presence from Druk Yul or another state at the time of our arrival. Indeed, this has been the case at all current locations, reinforcing the notion of the complete collapse of the Druk Yul state. The Northlands does not 'invade' other sovereign states, and our actions were based on the most accurate and up-to-date information available. 

 

That being said, we realize that realities can change and we are willing to negotiate for a peaceful resolution to this situation. We do not take kindly to threats and we will ensure the security and well-being of our state and people, but we recognize that the need for conflict is not necessary and we would prefer to have more friends in the world than enemies, should there be that choice like here. Because we are all reasonable actors, the Northlands proposes the following:

 

1) The Northlands will recognize the sovereignty of Empress Mei over the successor Druk Yul state.

2) The Northlands will remove its forces from Sri Lanka. 

3) Druk Yul and any associated states will recognize the sovereignty of the Northlands over the Maldives, which have never been part of the Druk Yul. 

5) The Northlands and Druk Yul and any associated states will maintain a non-aggression pact and trade treaty as a sign of peace and friendly relations for the future.

Those terms are agreeable. We also recognize the need for friends over enemies and hope the we can live in peace with each other. If you would wish for us to meet in person to confirm these terms and sign documents either here in Druk Yul or there in the Northlands than please let me know which you would prefer. Otherwise you can consider those terms agreed upon and ready to implement as soon as possible.

 

 

The terms Lord Timmermans sent to Mei were definately agreeable and fair as long as both nations actually went along with them. The Maldives were never a part of Druk Yul but Sri Lanka was so as long as they did keep their word and remove their forces from Sri Lanka than there would be no problems at all. However she still felt the need to meet with Lord Timmermans in person just to make sure those were the real terms both nations were agreeing to and that there were no sinister things going on. "You can understand why I need to meet with him on this Jesse. Ever since the attack by the Mandarin's forces the world thought they had destroyed us. We need to find a better way to let the world know that we are not dead because so far a big speech doesn't seem to be enough."

 

"A big speech is never enough. Displays of force are usually enough to show the world that a nation is not dead however with how delicate the state of the world is right now that would only make things worse. You are now the main leader of the New Dragon Empire (OOC: just use that as the official name of the Druk Yul / Shanghai merge) and as such you don't need to come to me about every major decision that comes to you. I trust you enough to do what you feel is right and as long as you don't make any huge threats like what happened with Russia last time than everything should be better this time. The world needs to learn that Druk Yul and Shanghai are no longer 2 seperate nations. Now we are united once more and if we do this right the Dragon Empre will become even better than all the great Chinese Empires of the past!"
