More Polish Problems

The Maltese would hold their position for the time being. They would scout the battlefield to gather intelligence in the form of documents, equipment, and wounded soldiers. Those who are captured would be taken in for medical care if needed and then put in a small makeshift detention center sans their shoes, jacket, belt, and personal effects. They'd also be blindfolded and left blindfolded for the time being. The A-10 Warthogs would both take fire and though neither of them were shot down, one of them took considerable damage that would take it out of play for the coming days.

In Malta, the 173rd Airborne Brigade was given orders to push a battalion to the scene of the battle. Two more A-10 Warthogs, 2 more F-18 Fighters, 2 F-22 Raptors would be sent to the 555st Belarus. Two B-1 Bombers would be ordered to stay on station at all times, just south of Poland, and would be armed with a considerable array of firepower. Further, two ELINT aircraft would be surged to reinforce the 555th Belarus. While permission was not asked to base them in Belarus, it is hoped they'll be allowed to remain. An Intelligence and Reconnaissance Company capable of flying and supporting Reaper Class Drones would be sent to join the 555th Belarus Detachment for immediate deployment. The Intel officers would have orders to share all collected intelligence with the Belorussians and Hungarians as well. The Medical Surgical Company would find itself hard at work as soon as they arrived and unloaded.

The wounded Maltese soldiers were stabilized, those who could return to duty were allowed to do so. Those who could not were evacuated directly to Malta via medical relief flight. Replacements for the dead and wounded are sent in on the same flight as the incoming battalion of the 173rd Airborne. Replacement Pumas would take a little longer to arrive but they were on their way along with four more 120 mm Mortar Carriers and a battery of 155 mm Self-propelled artillery. The Order of St. George 10th Special Forces Company is also ordered to depart for what is being called Firebase Three Ring Circus as soon as they can board their planes.

Maltese Soldiers were killed and wounded in Poland last night. More details to follow. For now a full media blackout is in effect to allow the Malta Defense Force to make the proper notifications to surviving relatives and the families of those who were wounded. We ask all Maltese to pray for our soldiers and to pray for the Polish. Despite the fact we are now enemies, they are still fellow humans. Pray for them all because in the fury of battle God chooses no sides.

Notification teams for the 38 dead Maltese soldiers and 57 wounded ones would begin their sad by necessary work immediately.

With the Maltese forces holding to their positions, the Polish forces would decide to live to fight another day. They would withdraw from the area before sunrise, leaving only mines and bodies. The Maltese forces would succeed in capturing about a dozen Polish fighters.

The White Army, would, of course, have quite a different take on the battle than that of Malta.

"Friends, countrymen, brothers in arms! Today, we have scored a glorious victory against those who dare to defile our lands. Today, 500 brave Poles marched into battle against the Maltese and their Belorussian cronies. Today, Polish soil has been watered in the blood of her enemies, and it wishes for more. We shall water our fields with the blood of those who have dared to set foot on our homeland.

To the people of Malta and Belarus, I speak directly to you know. Your governments have transgressed against Poland, and they shall Pay for it. You shall never know a day of peace so long as you continue to harbor those who have shed Polish blood. Your cities will burn, and your families with them.

Unfortunately for Malta, Belarus would request that it not station its ELINT aircraft on its territory, mainly due to fears among the military that they would begin collecting Belorussian signals, either by purpose or by accident(Not that they would give that exact reasoning in the message. No need to needlessly offend people). The Belorussian government would, however, offer to share intelligence it gathered through its own aircraft. Edited by Mr Director

It was an understandable fear on the part of Belarus that Maltese sensors would collect their signals. It was fairly difficult for them not to do so. As a compromise, the one offered by the government of Belarus is found acceptable and is quickly agreed to. Signals monitoring equipment of a different sort would be brought in already installed on arriving vehicles that would allow Maltese soldiers to monitor electronics emissions locally to search out Polish military energy emissions of various types. It wasn't nearly as long ranged as a dedicated ELINT craft, but it would serve on a local level. As the request for reinforcements for the 555th Belarus was not denied, the incoming aircraft arrive without incident.

The ready battalion of the 173rd Airborne is dropped and the troopers take their place in fighting positions of an expanded perimeter. Tonnes of dirt, wood, and sandbags have been brought together to make a veritable maze of shelters to protect the men and vehicles of Firebase Three Ring Circus. The extra combat vehicles and replacement soldiers are due to arrive without many problems. The added mortars and 155 mm howitzers will expand the defensive fires of the facility. Reaper drones and smaller drones belonging to the 1st of the 1st weave their way through the sky expanding the reach of the Maltese forces. Sightings of Polish hostiles would be reported directly to Belarus.

A dedicated Air Combat Patrol of two planes is kept over the Firebase at all times along with a pair of B-1 Lancer Bombers are kept on station at high altitude. Roving mounted patrols of platoon and company sizes sweep the regions around the base at a distance of three kilometers. The Medical Surgical Team begins to conduct swift business as the locals start arriving to seek help for their many medical conditions. Plans are put into motion to create a protected zone for civilians once such an arrangement allowed by the government of Belarus and the facilities for it built.

With that in mind, a massive order for medium purpose tents is put into a reputable tent maker in Malta. Given that this company is also one of the largest maker of circus tents, most of the men of Firebase Three Ring Circus are hard pressed not to smile or laugh at the news. Cooking, bathing, and other materials needed to properly equip a refugee encampment are taken right out of the Malta Defense Force surplus depot. This depot has the specific task of housing tonnes of surplus equipment, all of it in working shape, before being sold on the open market.

With the Alvonians continuing their offensive into Poland, Minsk would decide that it was time that they beef up the capabilities of their Prussian allies, which would make an excellent proxy against Alvonia. Five Strela-10 and one Buk SAM systems would be carefully smuggled to the Prussians, in order to help them counter enemy aircraft. The movement would be heavily camouflaged, in order to avoid detection. Several Prussians would be smuggled into Belarus in order to train the on how to use the new weapons. Until they were fully trained, the SAMs would be operated by Belorussian forces, who were, of course, wearing Prussian uniforms in order to prevent anyone from tracing them back to Belarus. 100 Strela-3 MANPADs would also be sent.

Belarus would also stop sending supplies to Prussia by air, and would instead send them by ground. This would increase the risk of supplies being seized by the White Army, but would make the movements more difficult to detect. Belarus would also begin taking even greater care to ensure that any markings on the weapons that could be traced back to Belarus were removed.

An additional 80 Spetsnaz would be disguised as Prussians and sent to assist van Twerk's men.

Slowly but surely, the White Army would come to terms with the fact that the large scale attack on the Maltese had been a tad too costly. They would begin to test new tactics.

The Maltese had begun sending out numerous patrols around their camp. The Poles decided to see if they could take one of these out.

While the White Army was having to keep its distance from the Maltese base, it still had a number of civilian sympathizers in the area. It would use these to gather information on one of the patrols that the Maltese had sent out. Once the patrol was about a kilometer out from its base, the Whites would swing into action. About 40 fighters would converge on the route the patrol was expected to take. They would travel there in several small groups, in order to reduce the chances of detection.

Once they arrived at their destination, they would hide themselves as best they could, and wait for the Maltese to show up. If the Maltese did arrive, the Polish troops would open fire on them. two to four RPGs would be fired at each of the Maltese vehicles, and a number of riflemen would swarm any vehicles that became disabled.

If the Maltese did arrive, the Polish troops would open fire on them. two to four RPGs would be fired at each of the Maltese vehicles, and a number of riflemen would swarm any vehicles that became disabled.

The Polish RPG men were going to find themselves a bit surprised by the ineffectiveness of their weapons against vehicles equipped with state of the art soft kill defenses and layered armor. The first few patrols would shrug off these attacks and keep on moving. The intention being that by engaging in a whole sale firefight with Polish insurgents would provide too much of a cost on civilian lives. At this time there is no evidence to suggest that the local civilians were assisting the White Army, though the Maltese Commander General Charles White is highly suspicious that this is probably the case.

Yet, what could be done? If they started lashing out at suspected sympathizers it would only draw more support towards the Polish White Army belligerents. If they did nothing they'd look weak.

With this in mind the following flier was printed up and distributed.

Public Request of Polish White Army

Could you please stop firing on our vehicles in populated civilian areas? We are here to provide medical relief to any and all civilians who present themselves for it. We provide this medical relief without question. By firing on our vehicles in populated areas you are providing us with patients that we'd rather avoid having to treat. Further, during your last generous donation of fresh beef several of your lost cattle herders were wounded. We'd like to return these poor unfortunates to their families. Once they are able to move without too much assistance we will do just that. Please notify the families of the following individuals to present themselves when requested to collect their lost cattle herding family members.

Also, please send more free beef, the last shipment was quite good.

General Charles White
Malta Defense Force
Society of Malta Order of Military

A list of the injured cattle herders would be sent directly to whatever White Army official could be found, which in this case ended up being a local Polish Chief of Police who swore up and down he had nothing to do with those White Army rascals. The deliverer of the list nodded, winked, gave a few nudges and then sealed the deal with several shots of vodka before staggering back to his waiting APC.

The patrols would continue but would do so under the watchful eye of Reaper drones and combat aircraft. Thermal imaging would be used well in advance of the vehicles arrival to attempt to sniff out thermal signatures that provide helpful clues to the presence of armed persons. It certainly wasn't a fool proof measure but it was better than nothing. Two of the damaged Polish tanks would be put back into service in great secrecy in the heart of the Maltese base. Parts would be custom made by the remaining Combat Engineering Company. The rest of the Engineering Unit had returned to Malta with the arrival of the additional Mortar Carriers and Self-Propelled howitzers.

Medical relief teams are being organized to visit and provide care to outlying villages. There is a loud debate underway in government circles as to whether or not the announcing of these teams in advance is prudent along with whether or not they should be armed.

The White Army was becoming quite desperate at this point. The moral boost experienced by the first attack was wearing off, and their assaults since then had completely backfired. Not only had their teams failed to kill the Maltese, they were being downright ignored by their targets, who simply drove on as if nothing had happened. In addition to this, the  increased presence of Maltese drones had resulted in increased Polish casualties, and Belorussian assault helicopter pilots were not always as considerate of civilian casualties as their Maltese counterparts were. A number of Polish fighters would find themselves under attack by assault helicopters, once the Maltese patrols were safely out of the area. In the end, about a hundred Polish fighters would be dead.

But desperate men were still dangerous men. The White Army would begin lashing out, wildly. Towed artillery was vulnerable to enemy airstrikes. Self-propelled guns, on the other hand, could move quickly enough to avoid counter-strikes. The Poles would begin using ASU-85 guns in small scale attacks on the Maltese camp and on Belorussian towns. The guns would fire a single shot from maximum range, and then flee to a different location.  The odds of them hitting anything important from that range was unlikely, but, as always, it was the thought that counted. On average, the Maltese would face about 15 artillery shells per day, while Belarus would be faced with 20.

The Maltese patrols would continue to be harassed, but in a different way. Instead of launching large-scale attacks, the White Army would send individual mortar teams to fire a few shots at the Maltese and then retreat. Once again, it was highly unlikely that anything would get past the defenses of the Maltese vehicles, but at this point, even a single casualty would make the effort worth it.

Perhaps the most destructive action the Whites would undertake would be a tactic that had existed since the beginning of humanity: Ethnic Cleansing. There were some 507,000 ethnic Belorussians in White Army held territory. Many of these had lived there since before half the world had collapsed, and had arrived there when Belarus had established a protectorate over the area so many decades ago. Polish fighters would begin going from village to village, dragging suspected Belorussians out into the streets and putting bullets in their heads. Anyone who cared to watch the news from Poland would be treating to videos of militiamen burning towns and pouring bodies into mass graves. These actions would lead to massive internal pressure on the Belorussian government to stop relying solely on airstrikes, and to launch a full scale ground invasion, an move that it had so far opted not to make.

The General of the White Army would also make a public appearance, stating that any who accepted assistance from or gave assistance to the Maltese relief mission would be treated as an enemy of Poland and would be dealt with accordingly.

The news of the injured herders would reach a White Army lieutenant, who would immediately send a message to Malta offering to have all his men lay down arms in exchange for some beef jerky, a slice of pizza, and any leftover polar bear meat.

This would be responded to with the following announcement.

The government of Malta offers a bounty on the leadership of the White Army. 10 million dollars a piece for the physical head of the those included on the list attached to this message. No questions asked and in the currency of your choice.

King Gregory of Malta

The 173rd Airborne is given orders for an immediate fullscale assault on Poland. The entire brigade begins loading up on their transport planes with orders to drop on a target yet to be identified. The planes of the 555th that are in Malta would be surged to Belarus along with sufficient transport capacity to support their operations. The oncall B-1 Lancer support would be increased from two to six on station at all times. The 781st Helicopter Wing would get orders to immediately begin deployment to Firebase Three Ring Circus with their deadly attack helicopters.

At Three Ring Circus the four 155 mm howitzers would be increased to sixteen of the weapons in the form of an additional 12 towed pieces. The reapers, the artillery, the mortar carrier reinforcements are in place and operation with the 555th Belarus on constant duty. The Order of St. George's 10th Special Forces team arrived at Firebase Three Ring Circus and immediately began counter-insurgency operations by setting up a series of watch posts in the deep of the night. The watch posts have orders to not fire unless fired upon and to transmit the sittings of armed Polish terrorists via ultra high speed burst transmission. The have orders to attempt to interdict the attacking mortar teams by vectoring the assests of Firebase Three Ring Circus on the Polish mortar teams.

The artillery and harrassment is being felt, in terms of physical damage several vehicles and buildings have been hit. Manpower losses are kept classified at this point in time to prevent the voracious and hysterical Maltese media from spreading the news from one end of Malta to the other end of the known galaxy. As of last night, thirty four Maltese soldiers have been wounded and another seven killed by Polish attacks. In the early hours of the morning a silver bullet so to speak screamed in from the heavens and landed right in the middle of a sleeping squad of the 173rd Airborne Brigade.

When the dust cleared, 12 men were added to the death toll.

This is formal notification that the government of Malta is about to conduct an air assault on Poland for the purposes of attempting to halt the ongoing ethnic cleansing. At this time we wish to strike at the greatest concentration of White Army power and request the best estimates you have as to where that location is and what those forces consist of.

Alvonia will not stand for such callous interventionism in Poland, and kindly requests the Matlese Air Force suspend its operations against the Polish. Wehrmacht troops are undergoing operations to assist in pacifying the area and the last thing that is needed are non-Polish nations enforcing their will. Alvonia once handled protection of Poland, and we will do so again. Allow us to do our job, and you can do yours.

As this went on, the SKM Markus Wilding fleet had arrived in the Baltic, and reports came in that some Prussian ultranationalists had set up shop, something that just would not be tolerated. Orders were given to destroy them by any and all means necessary. Schwarze Korps Fernspaeher units, armed with K42 rifles, G22 sniper rifles, MP90 submachine guns, and the occasional MG3 machine gun, deployed forward with Scout Snipers (who had G22 rifles and MP90 submachine guns as well) to scout out and probe Prussian ultranationalist positions and determine their strength. Once that had been determined and properly scouted out, calls were made to the SKM Markus Wilding fleet off-shore to have their AV-8B Schiff Jägers fly out and conduct SEAD/DEAD missions against confirmed Prussian ultranationalist anti-aircraft vehicles. After that, Raketenartilleriepanzers moved up and began to drop incendiary bombs on the Prussians, shortly followed by assaults by Khs-21 Wolf helicopters that were supported by the 1. Gepanzerte-Kavallerie Division's tanks and light infantry. Tube artillery from the PzH 2000s was used to cut off potential retreat routes while Fleigerfaust crews searched the skies for any enemy airpower.

The Belorussian Sate Security Council filed into the secure room under the Republic Palace. They had all had a rough time, and the proverbial shit was hitting the fan across the country. The President spoke first.

"Alright gentlemen. I've got five thousand protesters sitting outside yelling at me to do something. What is our status?"

The Commander of the Army was about to respond, when Valery Vakulchic, head of the KGB, cut him off.

"We've got protests in Minsk, Strikes in Vitebsk, and anti-Polish riots in Hrodna. We have managed to keep the last one off the news, and are working to ensure things settle down. Nine civilians have died from the shelling."

The President looked at the KGB man. "And what do you suggest we do about this?"

"Let me send in my forces. We can have this business finished up by the end of the week, and then we can turn our attention back to where it is needed."

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Vladimir Andreichenko, spoke in his usual dry tone.

"Your troops would be better spent fighting the Whites, would they not?"

The KGB director scowled, and replied "It is not that simple. We need to restore order. We need to show who is in charge here. If the opposition realizes that they can simply throw a few protests and bend us to their will, we're finished."

The General Yuriy Zhadoben finally spoke up.

"I agree with Minister Andreichenko's position. We have no choice but to send in troops to Poland at this point. If we don't do it, we'll look like idiots on the world stage, weaklings to our neighbors and traitors to our people. However, the situation is not as simple as that."

He handed a file to the President, who read it.

"Who else has seen this?" he asked.

"No one. The Prussians did a good job of covering it up. We almost missed it ourselves. But the evidence is all there. Prussian forces did massacre 1,000 Polish civilians in Augustow County, possibly more."

"Shit," muttered the President. This was turning into a disaster.

He looked up at the General, and said, "Let's finish this business, and let's finish this fast. We deal with the Poles, we tell the Prussians to calm down or be destroyed as well. Then we handle the Fascists."

The men would go to give their separate departments their orders.

Some time later, 120 Spetsnaz fighters would parachute into areas around Podlaskie, where militias loyal to the Belorussian Sixth of June group had begun fighting back against the Whites. The Belorussian troops would help these fighters distract the Poles, while Belorussian forces began preparing for an offensive into Poland. A message would be sent to the Maltese, informing them that Belarus would take part in the invasion, and the strike coordinates would be sent.

Tube artillery from the PzH 2000s was used to cut off potential retreat routes while Fleigerfaust crews searched the skies for any enemy airpower.

It would be quite difficult for the Alvonians to locate all the Prussians, considering that they were a relatively small group spread over what was actually quite a bit of territory. They certainly weren't clumped together so as to be destroyed by a handful of incendiary bombs, although the bombing would destroy Prussian artillery pieces and tanks which were out in the open. The Alvonain SEAD missions would wipe out the Strela-10s and the Buk system, but they would do little about their MANPADs, which would be used against the Alvonian helicopters. Alvonian rocket artillery, which was, like most rocket artillery systems, meant to fight large groups of forces, would also do little good. The Alvonian PzH 2000, despite their large range, would also be unable to reach large areas of Prussian territory, and thus retreat routes into Belarus and Podlaskie would remain open, although they would not yet be utilized.

When Alvonian tanks and infantry began their assault, the Prussians would put on their freedom fighting gear and get to work. Their artillery and tanks may have been destroyed, but they would still put up a fight. The Alvonians would be faced with some 2,000 soldiers which would operate in small groups, launching hit and run attacks in order to delay the advance. A number of them would also operate from camouflaged positions, and would target the Alvonians with machine guns and RPGs. Larger groups of Alvonian troops would be targeted by RPO-A Shmel launchers, which would fire thermobaric warheads at the enemy.

Surviving Prussian heavy equipment would be concealed carefully.

One the Belorussian side, another 100 Spetsnaz would join the Prussians, and another 50 MANPADs would be sent. Small arms would continue to trickle through, although at a slower pace to avoid detection. Belorussian Su-27s which had been searching for the MiG-21s would now begin keeping an eye on the Alvonian fighters.

*After the parliament had met with their Minister of Defense, Secretary of Defense, and the Chief's of Staff over several days time, to listen to thier advice and recommendations, Prime Minister Rikard Beres was finally ready to make his decision.

The Polish State's shooting of several Hungary-Slovakia citizens, along with their attacks against Hungary-Slovakia's ally Belarus, had crossed the line.  Polish State has to be dealt with.

He would station 5,000 troops across Hungary-Slovakia's northern border, and would send an additional 1,000 troops into Poland, to start with, to hunt down Polish rebels and Polish State militants.

8 medium tanks would accompany the troops into Poland, as well.*

The men of Firebase Clown Show, the 555th Composite Air Wing Belarus, and Overwatch flight are given a new set of orders. Due to Polish attacks on civilian populations, any person that can be reasonably identified as a White Army member is to be engaged. No requirement is made to attempt to convince these persons to surrender, if they do so, they'll be allowed to surrender, yet they are not going to be told to do so. With these orders in hand and the sunrise only an hour away, Colonel Rol Mbembe, newly installed commander of Ground Operations around Firebase Clown Show, sends out what will be a the largest and most aggressive patrols to date.

The first patrol is a two company sized force of angry 173rd Airborne Brigade Paratroopers looking to put a little Polish blood in the metaphorical risers due to the fatal mortar attack that stole the lives of 12 Maltese paratroopers just the day before. The two companies of 185 Paratroopers will be reinforced by a platoon of 4 Puma APCs and the 24 Infantrymen that ride in them. The paratroopers will me traveling slowly on foot and moving from village to village along a circular route of 20 miles that is within range of the heavy gunnes of Clown Show at all times. The two companies are directly supported by a platoon of four Tiger HAD Attack Helicopters. They can call on fire support from 120 mm mortars, 155 mm Howitzers, and the 555th Composite Air Wing.

A second patrol is sent out at the same time, it consists of a eight Tiger HAD helicopters and they have orders to conduct tree top patrols in such a manner to catch Polish forces in movement as they try to interdict the Paratroopers. The Tigers aren't overly silent machines, which is why they are supported by several Reapers and a high flying reconnaissance plane from the 555th Composite Air Wing that carries an impressive array of very powerful cameras. The drones and recon bird will help find targets and the Tigers will close on them and engage them. Supporting Tiger Patrol are four more Tiger HADs held in reserve, the mortars, 155 mm howitzers, and the 555th aircraft.

A third sortie patrol, nicknamed the Rescue Rangers, is reading and waiting. Should one of the Tiger crews need rescue or the Paratroopers need assistance, a company of Pumas will sortie and drive at full speed to where they are needed. They have orders to return fire when fired upon but not to engage in movements other than those required to move them from Clown Show to where they are required. This patrol has the same artillery and aerial support that the other two patrols have at their disposal with the addition of a pair of A-10 Warthogs that have orders to focus the majority of their supporting fires for calls from the Rescue Rangers to help keep them in movement to their destination.

That night, more aerial patrols would be sent out along with two more company sized armored patrols. The Pumas sent out on these patrols would drop stay behind teams who would wait to see if any Polish terrorists showed up and made themselves convenient target practice. Whether or not these patrols were sent out depended highly upon the first two patrols being able to return to base more or less on schedule. Should those patrols get bogged down, alternative plans were in place to have the two armored companies advance to assist in whatever way possible.

The short version of the entire tale, the Maltese were coming out swinging at anything that looked like a White Army member and they aren't going to ask them nicely to set down their weapons.

After all, the only good terrorist is a dead one.

The tank battalion, consisting of T-72s, pushed through the Polish countryside. As per the usual practice of armored reconnaissance, BMP-2s would scout ahead of the main force. Visibility was low, partly due to the heavy early morning fog, and partly due to the semi-drunkenness of the Belorussians. Belorussian forces would be forced to use thermal sights.

After about half an hour, the BMPs would receive information that there were no further enemies between them and their next target. Suddenly, a screen of Polish BMP-1s would appear some 300 meters to the east. The poor weather, along with the copious stocks of Vodka, had reduced visibility to a near zero. A burst of small arms, machine guns, and rpgs would erupt. Soon, the Belorussian forces would also begin to receive rounds from Polish T-64 tanks. The Belorussians would return fire with their automatic cannons, until finally being forced to retreat.

Nearby Belorussian T-72s would open fire on the Poles, and would destroy one T-64 and eight BMP-1s. The Belorussian forces would pull back from the Polish forces, in order to regroup and call in air support. By the time they had done so, the Poles were gone, leaving only the burning hulks of their vehicles.

There was both good news, and bad news for the White Army. The Sixth of June now controlled a chunk of the northwest, thus ending hopes among the Poles for Alvonian assistance. However, they lacked the heavy equipment in order to push further into the White's territory, and were instead busy forifying their borders with Alvonia and the rest of Poland. The Belorussian advance in the East had been stopped, due to the recent battle, and Minsk was now working to consolidate its gains. The Prussians were too busy fighting Alvonia to take any further part in the war in Podlaskie. The White Army Command had also succeeded in regaining the confidence of its men. It would now decide to strike at the Maltese.

The first few villages would be quite accepting of the Maltese forces. However, the White Army would call upon its civilian intelligence network to find the direction of the Maltese forces, and would prepare an ambush in one of the villages. About 500 fighters would be sent to move into one of the villages before the Maltese arrived there. They would take control of buildings, set up IEDs and booby traps, and would open fire once the Maltese arrived. 7 BMP-1 vehicles would also be hidden in the town, and would be used a fixed defenses.

The Polish forces sent to the village would be travelling in a number of small groups. Thus, it would be difficult for the Maltese to locate ALL of them. However, it was very likely that a number of them would be detected. Those that were discovered would be promptly slaughtered by the Maltese fire. Five groups, or 100 of the 500 men, would be lost in this fashion.

If the Maltese did send out the patrols, they would find that the Poles would not engage them. Polish forces had been severely degraded from the fight against the Belorussians and the Sixth of June, and simply did not have the forces to spare for any more attacks.

The two companies of the 173rd Airborne Brigade didn't at all shy away from battle. From the first rifle shot to the last they would fight and they would fight with everything they had. Long hard training carved the responses to the Polish into their muscles and minds like a stain that couldn't be washed away by the scouring wash of war. Squads carrying the 88 mm Carl Gustav Recoil-less Rifles would guard the gunners as the weapons started to spit the fury of the Airborne troopers downrange in the form of rounds designed to blow apart buildings. Soldiers who carried the heavy six shot revolving 40 mm Grenade launchers would immediately open fire with high explosive rounds on targets of opportunity. The rest of the troops would respond according to their own training.

The riflemen would go to ground and begin to put fire down on obvious targets. They would wait for their orders and when orders were given they'd advance in groups. Some of the groups would be pouring heavy fire into the Polish positions and some of the groups would be on the move. They'd then switch roles and keep the dance of fire an maneuver going to bring themselves into direct contact with the Polish terrorists. The Polish Armor wasn't much of a concern, the four Puma APCs, A-10 Warthogs, Reapers armed with Hellfire 2 Missiles, and two F-18F fighters would start hammering away at the vehicles with guided munitions.

A specific concentration of fire is brought to bear by fire support officers on the ground beyond what is being sent against the Polish armored vehicles. 120 mm mortars and a few salvos of 155 mm fire rip their way towards the Polish positions as well to soften them up a bit before the Paratroopers come into contact. A pair of laser guided 500 pound bombs are hurtling their way in as well with the ordinance all to arrive on what appears to be the strongest concentration of Polish strength. Indications of the munitions arrival would be heralded by the sudden stop of the Maltese advance as the men dived to cover as ordered to over their radios. Upon impact, it is expected the Paratroopers would immediately resume their advance.

Once the fight is joined, Colonel Mbembe, sends out the orders to reroute Tiger Patrol. The eight Tiger attack helicopters are ordered to begin scouting around the battlefield to try and interdict those fleeing or those attempting to reinforce. They are joined by four more helicopters that carry full loads of fuel and ordinance and specifically cluster munitions that might be more suitable for taking out the dispersed groups of criminals that were terrorizing the Polish countryside. . The Colonel also sends out a specially equipped helicopter for a very special missions.

The helicopter, a LUH-73, flies over the neighboring Polish villages with speakers blaring a message that strongly recommends they stay indoors, stay away from the windows, and find cover. The rattle of exploding ordinance off in the distance is the only explanation given for the warning, if that didn't get the point across to the locals, it was up to the forces of Darwinism to see things through to the inevitable conclusion.

Another battle, another massacre.

At first, it seemed as though things wold go well for the Poles. That illusion would be swept away as soon as the Maltese started shooting back. The Maltese riflemen would have a hard time taking out any of the Poles, as the Polish fighters had plenty of cover. The same could not be said for the grenade launchers, whose explosions would kill many of the terrorists. Nevertheless, there were plenty of replacement fighters to take their place. The Polish armor would, as usual, be destroyed. It would, however, manage to fire quite a lot of ammo against the Maltese from their auto-cannons, as the Maltese soldiers themselves hadn't bothered to engage the BMPs, and had instead waited for their air support to do it for them.

The Maltese bombs and mortars would cause the largest number of casualties. The buildings the Poles were hiding in weren't the most sturdy pieces of architecture, and a number of structural collapses wold take place. These collapses, however, would also pose a threat to the advancing Maltese.

In the end, about fifty Poles would survive. Unable to flee into the countryside, sue to the Maltese helicopters, they would fight to the end, firing at the enemy troops from their positions in the rubble.

The White Army Command wasn't the smartest lot. Their ambush had failed, so their logical response would be to set another. This one, however, would be set up in the countryside. Nine SU-76 self propelled guns and 100 soldiers would move into position along the expected route of the hopefully weakened Maltese force, which had apparently resumed their advance. These movements, of course, would be camouflaged as best they could be, and with the Maltese air support still at the last ambush site, there would be a significantly lower chance of detection. Once the Maltese force came into range, the artillery would open fire, and the soldiers would attack any disabled or lightly armored vehicles.

In other words, it would most likely be yet another exercise in futility.

The engagement had been a nasty one, the tactics used by the Polish hadn't been particularly well thought out. Yet, their enthusiasm had sent enough lead downrange to make itself noticed. Seventeen Maltese soldiers lay dead in the streets and another twenty four wounded, which was fine as they had come here to fight and fight they did. Colonel Mbembe having found the fight he wanted decides to switch tactics and pull the shot up Paratroopers back into Firebase Clown Show for the time being.

All of the helicopters, all available planes and drones would be sent out to fly search and destroy missions. The Rescue Rangers and the additional two armored companies sortie at high speed as they head in the exact opposite direction of the hunting planes and drones. Their orders are simple, attempt to draw Polish fire, engage their attackers, and wipe them out. Once they've moved far enough away in the opposite direction they will sweep east and then in a fashion that will bring them directly towards the battle scene from the opposite direction of the Paratroopers advance.

Several Polish terrorists were captured, which presented Colonel Mbembe with a problem. He could break out the hammer and bang on their fingers till they told him everything they knew. However, with the talk of Malta signing an anti-torture convention he realizes that encouraging them to speak through means other than a good whack on the fingers with a hammer is needed. To that end he isolates each of the captives, has them stripped and bathed with a firehose, and given a pair of shorts to wear. Once they've been 'cleaned up', a single bowl of food is delivered through a slot in the door. The food comes with a spoon that is attached to a chain that leads outside the cell. As soon as they are finished eating, the spoon is quickly retrieved.  If they looked outside the small slot in their door they'd see a table set up that holds a variety of implements that include hammers, knives, chains, all the sorts of things one would imagine in a torture chamber. After they've eaten and been given an eyeful of their future with the help of a Maltese Paratrooper who agreed to pretend to be tortured in such a way that the Polish captives would assume someone was getting their genitals kicked right out from between his legs. After all that, they'll hear a great deal of shouting, crashing furniture, and Colonel Mbembe rushing into their cell with a blanket to 'rescue' them. Once they've been given a pair of pants and a shirt and treated to a steak dinner, the Colonel would ply them with a few drinks to see where the conversation would go.

Whether or not they told Mbembe what he wanted to hear depends entirely upon the person. Either way, Mbembe wasn't going to use actual torture on them due to the prevailing political winds and numerous Malta Defense Force regulations promising him that he'd get about the same as he dished out if he did.

The two armored companies wold walk into a very interesting situation. Namely, a running battle between White Army forces and Sixth of June militias who were backed up by Belorussian helicopters. It wasn't a particularly large fight, only a few dozen on either side. Even if the Maltese opted to get involved, it was unlikely that it would slow them down much.

Meanwhile, at the site of the next ambush, the Polish artillery would open fire on the incoming paratroopers and armor. They hadn't been expecting such a large force, and it would most likely end in another disaster.

Mbembe would find out quite a bit from his Polish captives. He would find out the locations of White Army hideouts in the area, and the locations of some of their heavy weaponry. He would also find out about the situation withing the Army. The Whites had managed to stabilize their situation over the past few weeks, but the latest fight would no doubt put them on the back foot again.
