The government of Novak would recognize the Papal States as a nation, but would not recognize Alexander IX as anything more than the leader of said nation. The Emperor's mother's faith had begun as Catholic as part of House Hapsburg but vacillated, where as his father, Yuan Jia, had not given a flying fuck unless he dealt with various upstart Popes who got involved in temporal affairs. Leopold (Shizi) came down somewhere in between. Tianxia recognizes the lands of the Papal States, but emphasizes the role of the Church is to provide spiritual guidance to the soul. There are some within the realms of Tianxia who may recognize the Pope as they claim as the heir to St. Peter, there are many of the faithful that do not. This is a private matter so long as Churches stay out of endorsing or condemning specific peoples, parties, organizations within politics.
