Dancing on the Rhine

"I am terribly sorry but you're being quite rude for someone who is at someone elses party to bring a knife blade to another guest's neck, especially one as clumsy as myself, I'm afraid I cannot simply bring myself to participate in such uncivilized behavior.  Nor can I condone a threat to commit a felony over a spilled drink especially one such as murder my dear.  Now why don't you have a drink yourself and calm down before you do something you regret." he said with a rakish smile.

She'd shout, "Unlike yourself I have actually studied the laws of the nation that hosts us, and duels are not a felony." she said, returning the smile. "Gather round, honored guests of Hesse, I, Empress Hoshiko, Sovereign of Japan and Joseon, challenge Lord John Marbury, Earl of Croy, Marquess of Needham and Dolby, Baronet of Brycey, and Foreign Minister of Great Britain to a duel, to restore my honor for the crime of molesting my person."

Marbury took a sip of his scotch and laughed heartily, "My a tad dramatic don't you think.  You see I am a diplomat not a fighter who spilled scotch and is clumsy, if you think I'm going to fight to the death for scotch or apologize at knife point you're sadly mistaken.  But you are quite fun.  Tell me what is it like having a hormonal imbalance?"

"You assaulted my person, any real diplomat would not insult my body after molesting it. If you cannot fight, you are not worthy to order others to do so. If you do not expect a woman to allow herself to be touched by a man without reaction, I pity the women in your nation. I do not believe my hormones are of any of your concern, and further prove your misogyny." She sheathed her blade, turning to walk away before turning back to him once more "Here's a diplomacy lesson, I reacted rashly to being sexually assaulted, and I apologize for my behavior." She said bowing slightly. fully expecting the misogynist pig to continue wallowing in the mud instead of acknowledging that sexually assaulting another nation's head of state without so much as a word in apology is not diplomatic.

Commissar Tarkin couldn't believe what was happening. "Oh my goodness! This is exactly the kind of behavior that arises from a life of privilege and entitlement," he said to himself. This was supposed to be a civilized ball for nobles and foreign dignitaries, but everyone seemed to have a knife of a sword. The fact that he seemed to be one of the few foreign representatives who didn't bring a sharp edged weapon worried him immensely. He discretely swiped a dull butter knife and a used soup spoon from a nearby table and tucked them inside his breast pocket in case things got rowdy.

A loud slow clap rang throughout the room, there had been another guest at the party, a quiet one who slipped in to show Hesse their support from across the Atlantic and establish ties with some of the guests. He instead found entertainment, jean Hollande only grinned behind a cloud of smoke emitting from the cigarette he had been working on since he arrived.

"Such excitement, I've missed these....gatherings".

The Princess was a bit taken aback by the action, but she'd been roughly briefed that the Empress' temper wasn't something to be trifled with. After a moment she looked down at her dress, which was probably ruined beyond any reasonable repair. She sighed and looked at the rather abrasive British man who'd just interrupted with a nonetheless friendly smile, even if the way he said 'marquis' made her cringe internally, "What an unfortunate circumstance to make such an important man's acquaintance." she said.

"My name is Josephine, I'm the Empress of France's second sister and that's essentially my only claim to fame except that I've sponsored countless charities. It's a pleasure to meet you." She looks down at the rather awkwardly placed stain, "This was my favorite dress though."

Maelstrom arrived, just appearing out of thin air. Being the oddly bizarre entity that he was.. what was observed would depend on the observer's inclination towards things spiritual. If they were willing to believe, there was a six winged dragon in a snow white uniformed decorated in medals, akin to a serpentine seraph. It did not carry a blade, it did not need one. If they were not willing to believe and they lived in a more grounded world, the entity before them was a man in the Naval Uniform of the nation of Druk Yul. He too, had a sword on his hip as part of his ceremonial garb.

He would walk over to the Count and Countess. "Interesting party you are having." He smiled looking around. "An interesting group." He noticed the Japanese and the French 'having words' with the British. "Diplomatic incidents abound it seems." He chuckled.

King William had been conversing with FA Officer Alexandre Lemaitre at a nearby food table when the incident unfolded and uproar began. Lemaitre would rush over and move to step between the Brit and Empress as they threatened each other. He was relieved when the Japanese Empress lowered her knife, and turned to face the man. "Poor form, not apologizing to the lady," he would say to Marbury, surprised that such behavior seemed to be common in the British Isles. He was grateful he hadn't brought his wife, and instead walked over to meet with the leader of Druk Yul.

"Your figure is quite, intimidating, in person," he would say to the non-human creature before him. "I don't believe we've had the pleasure of meeting. I am Officer Lemaitre of the Northlands," he would say introducing himself.

William would make his way over to meet Count Frederich. "Greetings, I am William from the Northlands. I couldn't help but overhear your daughter mentioning the terrible protectorate governance you've been forced to endure," he would say with a slight hint of a smile that would not betray whether he was joking or not.

Liska Atka, once schoolgirl generalissimo of Procinctia, hated this.

Was only in here because her current nation made an issue of this.

Bear Islands Nation of the Bear was incredibly desperate to have access to her diplomatic experience.

Like her name still actually held any weight.

Age seventeen bordering eighteen yet still a political relic.

Living fixture of a different long passed age.

Money was just enough for wasting her time.

From her childhood Liska could remember having always wanted to attend a ball, from Kiska’s stories of weaving society and diplomacy into a single elegant night of dance it quickly escalated to little girl’s fantasy. Sadly in service of Procinctia her dreams on this, like so many other things, were so thoroughly shattered. Despite splendor of the overall venue today was just a new generation of politicians dancing the usual game. It was enough to drive a girl to drink; and between the buffets and waiting staff wine flowed like water. Fortunately today with all the dancing, intense social interactions, and new arrivals it might be possible that no one would notice a single borderline-under-aged diplomat sneaking a drink. Liska made her way to the buffet and helped herself to a glass of wine. . .

Maelstrom raised an eyeridge and took the offered hand of the Officer Lemaitre in his claw carefully. It would be cool to the touch. "A pleasure as well, Officer Lemaitre. I am Maelstrom Vortex, Emperor of Druk Yul. I am fortunate to meet you as few humans outside my faith see this figure. You know, I don't think I've ever spoken business with the Northlands in person or through a proxy. We really should change that soon." He smiled, a fang or two revealed by pulled back upper lips and overhanging lower jaw. Serpentine, jade shaded eyes examined the room and those gathered. Having seen the offense by Marbury.. he was tempted to behead the man. Druk Yul's stance on sexual deviancy was well known since he had brought the night of judgement to that land. Well, it was known to those who believed.. those who knew.. he was the architect behind the seemingly natural demise of millions of criminals.

Taking a few steps away from the buffet, suddenly, she bumped into some weird admiral or something. Looking somewhat flustered over her own clumsiness, she bowed politely. "Pardonnez-moi, Monsieur. I do not know where my head was. It was as if you just appeared out of thin air... Not that I'd suggest you did, Monsieur, it is my fault. I was too careless. Please forgive my carelessness." Hurriedly, she looked whether any stains from the bread in her left hand were left on the white uniform, but it seemed it was fine.

"My name is Lisel Aschenbach. Again, please forgive my mishap." The young woman, had long blonde hair and remarkable amber eyes. Although she seemed to be rather young, it was hard to define her exact age. Similarly, it was hard to pinpoint her status, as her dress, while adequate for the occassion, was hardly outstanding and surely one of the less extravagant.

"Oh no, not at all jeune Fille. No need to appologize. These things happen. What brings you to this gathering this eve?" He canted his jead just slightly with the question. He took a hankerchief out of his pocket and quietly cleaned up what bits of bread might have gotten on his outfit with little to no concern. "Tis just farbic. It can be cleaned and vanity is not my forte. I am merely dressed for the occasion."

Lisel Aschenbach had a very *unique* idea of what constituted a dress adequate for this level of formal occasion.

Liska was clad, per usual for such an event, in a school uniform.

Liska was covered in wine, just how she'd planned to spend her evening, joy. Worse still the the glass of wine had been completely wasted. She needed that liquid bliss to remember. She needed that liquid bliss to forget. So close yet so far. Miserable start for a miserable night! Finally but accosted by some clumsy fool. Liska might be a diplomatic official attending a formal international event, that sort of impulsive response would get her (if not all of Bear Islands Nation of the Bear into trouble), but she couldn't bother to care right now.  Hey, watch where you’re going as-” wait, it's actually close to her own age for once, darn it, “Errrrr,” Think something, anything, “uhhhhh," now Liska was beginning to feel bad about her incredibly rough treatment, "assured Lady?"

Quite relieved, Lisel exhaled. Last she wanted was some trouble with strangers... high-standing strangers. "The promise of diversion and social obligations, I guess. The kind of reasons that brought most of us here.", she replied with a kind smile. Though, as she looked around, it seemed, she had run into more trouble than she at first thought. For one, there was some high-schooler present... though, if this was mostly the world's finest who gathered here, there was only one of them who'd wear a sailor uniform... at least in public. And she had bumped into them too? "Pardon my carelessness, Madame Atka. Though I do not know where the wine comes from. I solely drink orange juice.", Lisel stated, holding up the glass of orange juice in her right, which made a sharp contrast to her long green dress.

What was however even worse, she stood a bit too close for comfort to a number of arguing people, who were quite angry and at least one seemed to be willing to go for a duel. In regards to these people though, pretty much everywhere in range of their weaponry was too close for comfort. While Lisel apologised to Generalisimo's successor, she also tried to keep a bit of a low profile, so as not to attract too much attention from the more troublesome people... Lisel had little interest in getting molested. She had even less interest in getting to see her own innards. And after just running into two people, Lisel was not too confident in her own skills to not cause more problems.

Maelstrom looked to Lisel and noticed how nervous she was. "Diversion and social obligations aside.. I think you'd be safer with a dragon than with those gathered this eve." He would whisper down to her quietly trying to to be overheard, yet at a slight distance so as not to seem overly creepy. "Stay nearby, I'll make certain no one bothers you as they unfortunately have the ministers from Japan and France." He would smile in an attempt to reassure her. "You remind me of my grand daughter Adria and I for one would not want her among these pirannah."  He picked up a glass of wine from the buffet table, dropped a small capsule in it, nodded satisfactorily, and took a drink.

"Ah, merci, Monsieur. Though one would expect the knight to protect the princess, not the dragon. But I guess that would require a real princess.", Lisel replied, before chuckling for a moment. Well, admittedly, the Admiral looked not much like a knight, more grim, less shiny, but still, never had Lisel seen a dragon. Most likely, likewise had the dragon never seen a Lisel... or what she was capable of. But somehow, this was all for the best, she thought.

"Well, there are few I'd wish to be in this predicament. I hope your daughter is well? I feel honoured to remind you of her." For a moment, Lisel wondered whether being compared to the daughter of the self-proclaimed dragon was a good or bad thing.

"She is. Her life is complicated, but whose life is not that is fully exploiting living?" He sighed and shook his head, "I don't know what to say about what has happened here. At one time, it would have suprised me.. but not anymore." He took a sip of his wine slowly, savoring its taste. "I really need to get the vintage of this, it's quite good. Might have to take some back for my beloved and share with her under the stars. You know.. the sky is almost crystal clear in the busom of Everest.. such a cold, dry climate. Is a wonderful place to view the heavens. Would be a wonderful gift fo celebrate our 7th year together."

The commotion of Kazuko shouting had grabbed the attention of Osamu and Takako, "What's wrong your Majesty?" Takako would ask, Osamu having figured out and knowing better than to interfere. "See if you can clean the "accidental" stain from the Princess's dress."  Takako would nod, running her hand over the stained silk, after a few seconds the stain began to fade, and within thirty seconds the stain was completely removed. "Incidently, the fabric will be much weaker now, I would suggest a replacement instead of wearing the garment against after tonight." Takako said cheerfully.

Kazuko would turn to their Hessian Hosts. "Augustus, would you mind escorting Eleanora, Josephine and myself over to meet your brother Frederich? I would not want any other accidents to occur, I believe that was enough unwanted molestation for me for the near future." she said coolly, returning to a more diplomatic composure, disappointed an enjoyable conversation had to be ruined by a pig.

As they passed by Maelstrom she smiled, "I never took you as one to partake in these rituals, we'll have to catch up after I'm done meeting the newest royal family."

Maelstrom smiled with a short faint chuckle, "I sensed a disturbance in the force. I'll be around, take your time." He sipped the wine slowly. Existing in duality, his human form would slowly absorb the alcohol as he had eaten a large meal before he came.. but those who believed would see the Dreamer's nostrils begin to smoulder as he burnt off the alcohol.

After dropping off his gift to the Hesse government, a golden wreath and a bottle of rum. Jean Hollande departed and left for the airport, the last plane going to united Guyana would take off with him onboard.

"Indeed, the price we pay for a life worth living... complications.", Lisel replied to Maelstrom. "And frankly, some of us would find it boring if there weren't any problems to overcome. What else would they do with the time they were given?" For a moment, Lisel wondered if this was similar to the thinking that pain was just another expression of being alive, but that would ound strange, wouldn't it? For a moment, Lisel looked around, wondering, before turning to Maelstrom again. "Pardonnez-moi, it seems I have to go. It was quite fun talking to you, however my duties call. Maybe our ways cross again, at some point, Monsieur Dragon. A token of my gratitude." After throwing something up in the air, Lisel would turn around and vanish in the crowd. If he could catch the small object on its way down, it would turn out to be a caramel.

He caught the caramel as it fell and examined it. "Hrmm.. " He wast empted to eat it, but then his token would not last. Perhaps he should put it in a small box with ice and keep it at home. The quandry, instant gratification vs long term rememberence. But was it meant to be consumed? For now he would pocket it and ponder its fate later. "À la prochaine, Mademoiselle."

“You have nothing to apologize for.

I had no right. No excuses.”

*Sigh*
“Not particularly deserving of your misplaced respect.”

Procinctia’s former generalissimo’s deserved shame intensified unbearably.

She couldn’t bring herself to look the kind blond girl eye-to-eye.

Tops of Liska’s generic sneakers dominated her view in responding to Lisel’s apology.

“Legendary schoolgirl/theorist/investigator/scientist/author/politician?

Far less impressive compared to anything in your textbooks.

Legendary theorist who hasn’t developed a theory in your lifetime

Legendary schoolgirl who hasn’t attended classes in your lifetime

Legendary scientist who hasn’t done any science in your lifetime

Legendary investigator who hasn’t solved a case in your lifetime

Legendary politician who hasn’t done politics in your lifetime

Legendary author who hasn’t written a book in your lifetime

Please try saving reverence to people who deserve it.

That was my wineglass.

Was attempting to drink this little gathering away.

Enough to dull any chance of sensation.

Not wanting to particularly be attending this.

These kinds of things remind me too much of better days.

A time I had family.

A time I had friends.

Hadn’t actually had either in your lifetime.”

*Sigh*

“Your interruption hindered my plan before it began.

I lashed out unnecessarily.

You deserve better.”

Maybe in other circumstances they could have been friends?

If a bit less abrasive could they have gotten along well enough?

It was a depressing thought.

Liska grabbed another glass of wine after the other more pleasant girl wondered off.

Covered in the stuff yet still going back for more.

Again with a glass of alcohol for only companionship.
