Sa'dabad Palace, Tehran

General Reza Pahlavi looked around the carnage that surrounded him. To his left, there lay the bodies of several guardsmen, each shot in the head. To his right was the body of one of his own men, a sergeant who had chosen to take part in this bloody little coup. And in front of him lay the Shah, or, to be more eprecise, the former Shah. One of the General's Lieutenants stepped into the room.

"General," he said, "The Palace is fully under our control. Our men are hunting down the last of the Palace Guard in the city."

"Good," responded the General.

"Sir, we hold the city for now, but there have been reports of some disturbances. The Savak has already broken up one potential riot, and there are looters in the suburbs. With all due respect, General, we need to address the people now, or risk loosing everything to the anarchy that is descending on the country."

The General nodded, slowly. "Get everything ready for a public statement. We will also need to inform the international communtiy of our, change in government."

"So then you do plan to declare yourself Shah?" asked the Lieutenant.

"No. The age of Shahs is dead, and I have killed it."

And with that, the Empire of Persia fell, and the bloody baptism of the Republic began.

Dear Republic of Persia,

It will take us a while to get used to the term "Republic" of Persia as opposed to "Empire", but as of this day, The Commonwealth of Massachusetts does hereby recognise the Republic of Persia as a legitimate nation. Hopefully our nations will work together in the future, possibly even near future. I will expect a response by letter or telegram, whichever your nation has access to.

Sincerely,

President Calvin Coolidge

Commonwealth of Massachusetts

Confidential to Persia

Greetings again, from your friends in Poland.

It is our understanding the former Shah had an elite secret police known as SAVAK, that was very effective.

The Polish Governing Junta is itself quite interested in training such a secret police force, and would be very interested in having some former, or current, SAVAK trainers from Persia to help us with the training of such a secret police, if such an arrangement is possible with Persia.

It most certainly is.

Mostly Public

In Teheran, things had slowly calmed down. The SAVAK had been swift and brutal in dealing with the looters, and the riots had been broken up. The few supporters that the former Shah had were rounded up and dealt with on a case-by-case manner. Soon the General's forces would in full control of the country.

Once things had settled down, the new government, with the General at its head of course, would set about rebuidling the nation. The former Shah had done a brilliant job of wrecking Persia. There were few road and rail systems, and those that did exist were woefully ill mantained and primitive. Electricity was unheard of. With poverty rates high, and many people looking for jobs, the government would begin an ambitious public works program, in order to improve the country and reduce unemployment. The Shah HAD left behind a large treasury at least, and it was time to put it to use.

A national modernization program would be put into place. Unemployed Persians would be put to work on building new rail systems and roads. New oil fields would be exploited, and considerable work would be put into diversifying the economy. Additionally, the government would begin to set up a national public school system, in order to provide ordinary Persians with an education. Slowly but steadily, Persia would be lifted from medieval to modern.

Persia had survived so many brutal, long years. Now, the Republic was surrounded by chaos and insanity. Most of the world had collapsed, and the territory around Persia was in anarchy. With the country faced with massive and mounting security threats from terrorists and militias, military preparedness would be raised, and border security tightened.

Persian Army Fights Skirmish Against Militants

The Persian Army has clashed with militants along the Iraqi border, a government spokesman said earlier today.

Witnesses confirmed this incident, and said that Persian tanks and troops were seen trading fire along the border. A total 13 Persian's were killed. 23 militants were also killed, and another 15 captured.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks, but a number of small militias and terrorist groups have taken control of the anarchic "White Space" regions around Persia, and pose a major threat to the Republic's existance.
