Prachuap Khiri Khan Canal

Druk Yul Strategic command looked at the map of Thailand and determined that it would annex part of the SEATO protectorate. Just a small piece.. and for a very good reason that would benefit all of Asia.

In many times throughout history, various powers had developed different ways to build a canal through the Kra Isthmus. Druk Yul was going to make that Dream come true by investing several billion dollars and had an anticipated build time of 5 years. The province of Prachuap would be required to allow for the construction of the route in secure territory solidly held by Druk Yul where the logistical constraints would be minimized.

SEATO forces were asked to vacate the region and the intent was explained. Agreement was reached with local leaders that they would be part of Druk Yul in exchange for the massive investment of funds into their local infrastructure and economy. The other end of the canal would terminate in Tanintharyi Region, already held by DrukYul.

It was though the addition of another traffic route between the Pacific and the Indian Ocean would relieve strategic international stresses, allow for the flow of more commercial traffic between the regions, and vastly improve the economy on the Isthmus. The plan, at least for Druk Yul, was to make the canal large enough for its warships and super tankers to pass through with ease.

The Druk Yul coprs of engineers began to move into the region as they worked with local construction companies contracting out workers.. in particularly those experienced with explosive. Blasting on the canal project would begin on both sides and the center within a couple of weeks.

Meanwhile to afford the region proper representation a census had been conducted and the healthcare services of Druk Yul moved to ensure the entire population was properly vaccinated. Social services also began to be handled by the Druk Yul government and transportation regulations began to transition over to Druk Yul transit law.

The first sections of the new canal zone were cleared of vegetation, terrain and environmetnal studies were done in an attempt to minimize impact on local wildlife while at the same time taking into account the timetable for the construction plan.

Local officials from the provece as well as its neighbor were brought in to help survey the zone and ensure any local concerns to the planned route were taken care of. People living along the route would be compensated for their homes and relocated. Cultural artifacts were moved out of the way.

In the meantime, the local police were trained on Druk Yul law and the Druk Yul legal system spread into the province.

The survey and environmental assessment was completed. The economy began to boom as money flooded the economy from Druk Yul as part of the construction project. Local coffers filled and local government used the money to further develop the region's infrastructure bringing it more and more in line with Druk Yul national standards. The rail system was linked in and a major railway hub was to be developed at both ends of the canal where goods could be offloaded and taken inland from extensively planned port and harbor docking systems.

Old flags came down, new flags went up. What was a multinational presence slowly shifted over colors of grey, red, and gold flags. The faith of dreams established a local branch temple. The change over in currencies began as the Talon replaced the Baht. A physical commodities trading branch was also set up near the rail yards where there would be, in the future, significant transaction in materials. The region was seeing wealth rapidly begin to accumulate among its people as trade and high skilled personnel began to move to the region which was destined to be an important trade and traffic hub.

With hew new infrastructure and rail linked in, heavy earth moving equipment was moved down the lines. Until that equipment was in place, the canal construction would be a slow and grueling process. The pieces of the equipment were so large they had to be assembled on site and included two Bagger 288s and several T-284s.

The earth would not simply be discarded or dumped anywhere. Plans were in place to use the earth as shore breaks in area where coastal erosion was particularly bad along the coast of Druk Yul. The soil would be moved to areas where surface erosion was reducing arability of the land. Every byproduct of the construction had an intended destination and use.

Meanwhile, national level elections began in the provicne for the representatives to be appointed to the Druk Yul parliament in the coming week.

The time for the full integration of Parachaup Khiri Khan was upon the small province. It sent its representative to the national parliament of Druk Yul. A vote was held and passed unanimously for the admission of the representative to the body s that production may proceed. A letter was sent to the Dreamer and to King Wangchuck advising of the admission of the representative to the body. Strangely.. faithful of the Dreamer faith were moving to the canal site.. they were saying the prophets among them were indicating some miracle my occur there in the not to distant future. Construction foreman kept having to remove the monks from the building areas.

Construction was going well. Blasts of dynamite were heard daily along the canal path and large trucks and digging equipment would be brought in to remove the loose dirt and rock. The people showing up in mass seeming to expect a miracle stayed clear of the construction work to the thankful sighs of site foremen. A few guardsmen were brought in just to make certain they didn't interfere and to keep the peace.
